Szkicowanie jako zapis myśli /Sketching as a record of thoughts 21
The task of the teacher is to show the way, rather than the
final solution. A drawing received by way of a dialogue,
rather than the teacher’s monologue, improves the stu-
dent’s satisfaction and is an important lesson instrumental
to independent work in the future. Motivation and encour-
agement for independent exploration are necessary for the
development of more creative and original results.
When teaching students at Faculties of Architecture,
apart from workshop improvement and presentation of
various artistic techniques, it is important to challenge the
students’ imagination and show possible routes for creative
exploration. It is crucial to raise the awareness of both deci-
sions and their consequences, and to define specific design
objectives. Appropriately selected exercise topics can con-
tribute to the improvement of these abilities. Such an ap-
proach was attempted with first year students enrolled in
a Landscape Architecture programme at the Faculty of
Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology

Exercises in theme sketching give students a chance to
quickly record their budding ideas. Additionally, students
can resort to drawing from nature. A close observation of
nature enables us to build a repository of images for our
imagination. An inspiration by still life reflected in the
composition, motifs of lines, the location of the dominant
and the nature of structure is essential for further creative
work, where students need to create shapes using their
own imagination.
One of the many analysed topics was entitled “a syn-
thesis of a tree” (Fig. 1). The students’ task was to use four
sketches to illustrate the passage from a realistic drawing
of a specific tree, using gradual simplification of its form,
but preserving its essence to its synthesis. In the last of
a series of sketches, students draw a tree in the form of
a graphic sign made of several lines. This task teaches
stu dents to identify characteristic features and distinguish
forms, and to present them synthetically. This exercise is
carried out using either pencil or charcoal.
In yet another example of creative uses of sketches,
students draw an organic form inspired by packaging
paper, which they initially fold and wrinkle themselves
(Fig. 2). One the one hand, a memorized movement of
folding the paper (tactile experience), and the observation
of the form, its important elements (directions, dynamics,
etc.) on the other, allow students to develop their own vi-
sion, transform the form they see in the realm of their own
imagination. What is more, an analogous packaging paper
is being lit by a spotlight from the above, imitating natural
light, which, seen from a distance, resembles a natural
form (such as a tree, landscape, rock, mountain). This ex-
ercise develops the students’ awareness of the importance
and quality of a line in a drawing, its thickness and pres-
sure. It is carried out with the use of any technique se-
lected (pencil, charcoal or ink technique).

odwagi w indywidualnych poszukiwaniach przyczynia się
do uzyskania bardziej twórczego efektu.
projektowych. Odpowiednio dobrane tematy ćwiczeń
mogą się przyczynić do udoskonalenia wspomnianych
umiejętności. Próbę taką podjęto na zajęciach ze studen-
tami I roku architektury krajobrazu na Wydziale Ar chi -
tektury Politechniki Krakowskiej

Szczególnie tematy wykorzystujące szkice umożliwia-
ją szybkie zapisywanie rodzących się pomysłów. Oprócz
nich bazę stanowią rysunki z natury. Jej wnikliwa obser-
stycznego konkretnego drzewa, poprzez stopniowe uprasz-
czanie formy przy zachowaniu jej istoty do jego syntezy.
W ostatnim z serii szkiców studenci rysują drzewo w for-
mie znaku graficznego zbudowanego z kilku kresek. Uczy
to obserwacji cech charakterystycznych i wyróżniających
form, a także ich syntetycznej prezentacji. W ćwiczeniu
tym wykorzystano ołówek lub węgiel.
Kolejnym przykładem twórczego wykorzystania szki-
ców jest ćwiczenie, w którym studenci rysują formę orga-
niczną zainspirowaną pomiętym przez nich szarym papie-
rem (il. 2). Z jednej strony zapamiętany ruch przez
poprzedzającą czynność zginania papieru (włączenie
w do świadczenie zmysłu dotyku), z drugiej strony obser-
wacja formy, jej istotnych elementów (kierunki, dynamika
itp.). Ćwiczenie to uświadamia studentom znaczenie i ja-
kość linii w rysunku, jej grubości/nacisku. Jest ono wyko-
nywane dowolną techniką (ołówek, węgiel, tusz).
Podsumowanie
Szkicowanie jest drogą odkrywania i głębszego bada-
nia rzeczywistości, które sprzyja rozwojowi wyobraźni.
Rysunki odręczne są także ważnym sposobem zapisu my-
śli, który koryguje szczególnie początkowe etapy procesu
projektowania („widzenie jako” i „widzenie, że”). Są
