Abstract

The article presents the proceedings and circumstances of the 1911 competition for a church in Włocławek.

One manifestation of the intense activity in Polish sacred architecture at the beginning of the 20th century was the numerous architectural competitions, including the competition for the church in Włocławek discussed here. It attracted both established architects and those just beginning their professional careers. Research into the competition and the submitted designs made it possible to identify the formal and stylistic trends prevailing in Polish sacred architecture at the time. Describing this little-known episode in the history of Włocławek’s architecture sheds light on the participation of the Diocese of Kuyavia and Kalisz in contemporary architectural debate. The competition itself foreshadowed the city’s later transformations during the interwar period, which remain insufficiently researched.
