Abstract

The article analyses the authenticity of an architectural monument in the context of virtual historical reconstruction. Its starting point was the question of whether, and to what extent, a digital model can convey selected qualities of material, intangible and contextual authenticity. The discussion is based on the case of Kijów Cinema in Krakow, whose original 1967 state was digitally reconstructed using laser scanning, archival research and 3D modelling, and then implemented in Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

The authors combined an analysis of conservation doctrines with reflection on digital representation, the experience of place and the platform-based character of the game environment. They distinguished a digital twin from a virtual historical reconstruction and discussed the risks of operating the model within a closed commercial environment. The case-study conclusions point to the need for transparency in the reconstruction process, documentation of interpretative decisions and archiving data outside the game platform.
