Bronowice greenery in Lublin – the tradition of the place in the context of contemporary transformations

Abstract

The article concerns the analysis of the transformation of the green areas of the Bronowice district in Lublin. It presents an analysis of the evolution of an urban unit, which significantly affected the format of the present greenery system. The existing contemporary green areas and their location are also shown, which significantly affect the microclimatic conditions of urban areas, and also reinforce the natural structures. In the article the author also has analyzed the tradition of the place in the context of contemporary transformations. She showed how the local community receive green, and how they relate to the rapid changes of investment in the district.

Wstęp

Zieleń uznawana jest za naturalne bogactwo. Nie tyl-

ko podnosi wartość krajobrazową, ale przyczynia się do

poprawy jakości życia mieszkańców. We współczesnym

rozwoju miast odczuwalny jest często brak proporcji

między „wagą” nowych inwestycji a znaczeniem ziele-

ni, która „ustępuje” im miejsca. Według ustawy o pla-

nowaniu i zagospodarowaniu przestrzennym [1] obsza-

ry „dobrze usytuowane” powinny być przeznaczane na

cele dotyczące w szczególności interesów publicznych.

Przez […] interes publiczny należy rozumieć uogólniony

cel dążeń i działań, uwzględniających zobiektywizowa-

ne potrzeby ogółu społeczeństwa lub lokalnych społecz

ności, związanych z zagospodarowaniem przestrzennym

[1, s. 3]. Cele publiczne jednak to nie tylko tzw. potrzeby

mieszkaniowe i inwestycyjne, ale również budowa sys-

temu przyrodniczego, który stanowi nieodłączną część

właściwie funkcjonującego organizmu miejskiego, albo-

wiem gwarantuje właściwe warunki życia jego miesz

kańcom.

Niniejszy artykuł ukazuje ewolucję historyczną tere-

nów zieleni lubelskich Bronowic oraz ich współczesną

strukturę.

Introduction

Greenery is considered natural wealth. It improves

the landscape and contributes to a better quality of life-

style of the residents. The lack of proportion between the

“weight” of new construction projects and the signicance

of greenery which “yields” to their pressure is nowadays

more and more evident in contemporary development of

the cities. According to the Act on Spatial Planning and

Land Development [1] the areas which are “well located”

should serve especially the purpose of public interest.

[…] public interest should be understood as a general

goal of efforts and activities which take into account the

objective needs of the whole society or local communities

connected with spatial development [1, p. 3]. The public

purposes, however, are not only so called residential and

investment needs but also the development of a natural

system which is an intrinsic part of properly operating ur-

ban organism as it guarantees the right living conditions

of its inhabitants.

This article presents the historical evolution of Brono-

wice greenery in Lublin and its contemporary structure.

Bronowice

At present Bronowice is one of the districts of Lublin

located in the east part of the city and it borders on its his-

toric center from the west. It comprises the areas located

in the block marked by the following streets: Fabryczna

Bronowice

Współczesne Bronowice stanowią jedną z dzielnic Lu-

blina. Znajdują się we wschodniej części miasta i przy-

legają od zachodu do historycznego centrum. Obejmują

tereny leżące w kwartale wyznaczonym przez ulice: Fa-

bryczną i Drogę Męczenników Majdanka od zachodu,

Firlejowską i Majdan Tatarski od wschodu, Lotniczą

od południa i rzekę Bystrzycę od północy. Prezentowa-

ne spostrzeżenia autorka oparła na analizie źródeł, tj.:

planów i widoków Lublina wykonanych w okresie od

XVII do XXI w., współczesnych zdjęć satelitarnych, ma-

teriałów fotogracznych, oraz na własnych badaniach

terenowych.

Pierwsze wzmianki o wsi Bronowice

pochodzą z 1342 r.,

gdy król Kazimierz Wielki sprzedał ją Franczkowi – wój-

towi lubelskiemu – jako uposażenie wójtostwa. Po nim

przejmowali ją kolejni wójtowie, aż do 1504 r., gdy zo-

stała wykupiona przez Radę Miejską Lublina [3, s. 17].

Przywilejem króla Zygmunta Starego oddana została pod

prawo magdeburskie, stając się jednym z przemieść lu-

belskich [4, s. 16]. Wieś ulokowana była na prawym brze-

gu Bystrzycy

oraz dwóch lubelskich rzek: Czerniejów ki

i Czechówki, na lessowych, pagórkowatych i podmo-

kłych terenach. Dla Lublina miała znaczenie gospodarcze

związane z istniejącymi kopalniami kamienia wapienne-

go (Kamienna Góra, czyli miejsce kopalni wapiennej),

których wydobyciem i wypalaniem w piecach (zwanych

wapiennikami) zajmowała się ludność osady [2].

Źródła podają, że kopalnia kamienia oraz piece do wy-

palania znajdowały się na terenach folwarku miejskiego

Bronowice [6, s. 123]. Dzięki surowcom mineralnym oraz

otwarciu szerokich rynków zbytu związanych z Unią Pol-

ski z Litwą Lublin w XVI w. stał się regionalnym centrum

produkcji rzemieślniczej [7, s. 158]. Niestety konikty we-

wnętrzne i zbrojne do połowy XVIII w., tj. potop szwedzki,

wojna północna i sukcesyjna, przyczyniły się do upadku

miasta. Od 2. połowy XVII w. nasiliły się zjawiska towa-

rzyszące kryzysowi Lublina, a także i samej wsi Bronowi-

ce, m.in. zmiana przebiegu szlaków handlowych, która stała

się przyczyną utraty przez miasto wiodącej roli pośrednika

handlowego między Litwą a Koroną. Dopiero na mocy de-

kretu króla Stanisława Augusta z 12 stycznia 1780 r. oraz

prawa o miastach z 1791 r. rozpoczął się okres rozbudowy

i przebudowy Lublina. Początek XIX w. przyniósł na are

Przyjmuje się, że nazwa Bronowice jest nazwą patronimiczną

i pochodzi od słowa Bron/Brun (dwuczłonowego imienia Bronisław/

Bru nisław). Inna hipoteza wskazuje również, że nazwa Bronowice

mogła powstać od miejsc sytuowania zapór w postaci bron („brona” –

opusz czana krata zagradzająca bramę) [2].

Dolina Bystrzycy miała postać szerokiego i płaskiego tarasu wy 

ście lonego utworami kredowymi, piaszczystymi madami oraz tor fa mi, zaś

płyt ki poziom wód gruntowych sprzyjał po wstawaniu zabag nień i podmok

łości (rozlewisk). W związku z niedostępnością i nie przy dat noś cią

gospodarczą tych terenów w XIV w. ukształtowano na nich Wiel ki Staw

Królewski liczący około 100 ha. Od połowy XVII w. w wyniku działań

wojennych i braku funduszy na odbudowę systemu melio ra cyj nego

przekształcił się on w bagno i tereny podmokłe. Od XVIII w. lublinianie

próbowali odtworzyć system wodny – kształtując m.in. Staw Bronowicki,

jednak ostatecznie cały teren doliny prze zna czono pod łąki i pastwiska [5].

Firlejowska and Majdan Tatarski Streets from the east,

Lotnicza Street from the south and the Bystrzyca River

from the north. The author based her observations on the

analysis of sources, such as plans and views of Lublin

made in the period between the 17

and 21

centuries,

contemporary satellite images, photographic material and

her own eld studies.

The rst mention of the village of Bronowice

dates

back to 1342 when King Casimir the Great sold it to

Franczek – mayor of Lublin – as a benet of his mayor-

dom. It was passed down from one mayor to another until

1504 when it was bought by the City Council of Lublin

[3, p. 17]. By the privilege of King Sigismund the Old

it was subjected to Magdeburg Law and became one of

the suburbs of Lublin [4, p. 16]. The village was located

on the right bank of the Bystrzyca River

and two other

Lublin rivers: Czerniejówka and Czechówka Rivers, on

loess and hilly wetlands. It was economically important

for Lublin because of the existing limestone mines (Ka-

mienna Góra means a limestone mining place) where the

inhabitants of the settlement were employed to mine and

burn it in special furnaces [2].

According to sources a limestone mine and furnaces

were located in the area of Bronowice grange [6, p. 123].

With the raw minerals and as a result of opening large

sales markets connected with the Union between Poland

and Lithuania Lublin became the regional center of pro-

duction of handmade goods in the 16

century [7, p. 158].

Unfortunately the internal disputes and military conicts

which began in the middle of the 18

century, i.e. Swed-

ish Deluge, North War and Succession War contributed to

the collapse of the city. The crisis of Lublin and the vil-

lage of Bronowice itself intensied in the 2

half of the

century and it resulted for instance in changing the

layout of the trade routes which in turn resulted in the city

losing its leading role of the commercial agent between

Lithuania and the Crown. It was not until the decree of

King Stanislaus Augustus from January 12, 1780 and the

law of cities from 1791 that Lublin started to grow and

restructure. The beginning of the 19

century brought big

changes in the international arena which greatly affected

further development of the city [3, pp. 20–24].

The village was owned by Lublin until 1822, except

for 1755–1758 when it was sold to cover the city debts

It is assumed that the name Bronowice is a patronymic name

which comes from the word Bron/Brun (two parts of the given name

Bronisław/Brunisław). Another hypothesis indicates that the name

Bronowice could have originated from the places where barriers were

located (“brona” – verticallyclosing gate called portcullis) [2].

The Bystrzyca River valley was shaped in the form of a wide and

flat terrace covered with chalky formations, sandy fens and peats with

high level of ground waters which favored bogs and wetlands (overflow

areas). As the land was inaccessible and useless for farming the Great

Royal Pond with the approximate area of 100 ha formed there in the 14

century. In the middle of the 17

century, as a result of warfare and the

lack of funds to build a drainage system it turned into a swamp and

wetland. Since the 18

century the residents of Lublin tried to restore

the water system – forming e.g. Bronowicki Pond, however, the whole

area of the valley was ultimately turned into meadows and pastures [5].

znaczenie dla dalszego rozwoju miasta [3, s. 20–24].

W posiadaniu Lublina wieś była do 1822 r., z wyjąt-

kiem lat 1755–1758, gdy została sprzedana w celu pokry

cia długów miejskich podsędkowi Ziemi Chełmskiej – An

to niemu Ludwikowi z Bończy Bonieckiemu. W 1822 r.

zo stała wydzierżawiona wieczyście – najpierw A. Maka 

rewiczowi, następnie rodzinie Chróścielewskich, w 1864 r.

zaś miasto zrzekło się do niej prawa własności. Na prze-

łomie XIX i XX w. na gruntach wsi Bronowice wybudo-

wano osiedle robotnicze, zaś na terenach należących do

folwarku utworzono park spacerowy [8, s. 101].

W 2. dekadzie XX w. wieś włączono w granice admi

nistracyjne Lublina. Początkiem przekształcania Brono wic

w dzielnicę była budowa w latach 50. XX w. na tere nach

przyległych do osiedla robotniczego kolejnego, wieloro

dzinnego Zakładowego Osiedla Robotniczego (ZOR) [2].

Na nowo powstałych skwerach i przy ulicach zaczęto

wprowadzać nowe nasadzenia z drzew, krzewów, bylin

i trawników. W latach 70. XX w. wykonano pierwszą in-

wentaryzację dendrologiczną parku, na początku XXI w.

zaś całej dzielnicy. Inwentaryzacje te oraz badania tere-

nowe ukazują, że w sposób ciągły zmniejszała się po-

wierzchnia terenów zieleni dzielnicy na rzecz budowy

nowych obiektów mieszkaniowych i infrastrukturalnych;

zmieniał się także ich skład gatunkowy – rabaty bylinowe,

kwietniki oraz grupy krzewów liściastych zastępowały ni-

sko przystrzyżone trawniki oraz drzewa i krzewy iglaste.

Wyniki te przedstawiono w dalszej części artykułu zatytu-

łowanej „Zieleń dzielnicy Bronowice (od 1916 r.)”.

Zieleń wsi Bronowice (do 1916 r.)

Abraham Hogenberg na planszy z 1618 r. [9] (il. 1, 2)

przedstawił na pierwszym planie panoramę Lublina m.in.

Wielki Staw Królewski, rzekę Bystrzycę, Czerniejówkę

oraz towarzyszącą im zabudowę Bronowic w układzie

szeregowym. Autor ukazał także towarzyszące zabudo-

wie komponowane układy zieleni – w postaci ogrodów

geo metrycznych; oraz niekomponowane, tj. tereny leśne,

które sąsiadowały wówczas od zachodu ze wsią.

Na mapie z 1852 r., autorstwa F. Bieczyńskiego, bę-

dącej kopią planu J.N. Łęckiego z 1783 r. [10], ukazane

zostały sąsiadujące z Lublinem wsie, w tym Bronowice,

które wówczas miały plan ulicówki. W tym okresie istniał

także na tych terenach Staw Bronowicki, wzdłuż które-

go ulokowane były domostwa. Staw ten stanowił frag-

ment Wielkiego Stawu Królewskiego

odtworzonego po

interwencji lublinian w połowie XVIII w. Był to płytki

zbiornik ukształtowany na żyznym podłożu, z torfowo

bagien nym dnem, silnie zarastającym, gdzie rozwijała się

doskonale roślinność wodna [5]. Można się domyślać, że

całość była bardzo malownicza i atrakcyjna krajobrazo-

wo. Przeanalizowane materiały ikonograczne świadczą

o tym, że już pod koniec XVIII w. obecne były na terenie

Bończa Boniecki. In 1822, it was perpetually leased – rst

to A. Makarewicz and then to the Chróścielewski family

and nally in 1864 the city waived its ownership right to

it. At the turn of the 19

and 20

centuries, a workers’

housing estate was built on the land owned by the village

of Bronowice and a park for walks on the area which be-

longed to the grange [8, p. 101].

In the 2

decade of the 20

century, the village was

incorporated into the administrative area of the city of

Lublin. The construction of a new, multifamily company

housing estate (ZOR) in the 1950s on the area adjacent

to the workers’ housing estate marked the beginning of

the transformation of Bronowi ce into a residential district

[2]. New trees, bushes, perennial plants and lawns were

established on newly built squares and by the streets. The

rst dendrological survey of the park was conducted in the

1970s and of the whole district at the beginning of the 21

century. Those surveys and eld studies demonstrate that

the green areas in the district were gradually diminishing

and new residential buildings as well as infrastructure el-

ements were built in their place; their species mix also

changed – perennial plants, ower beds, and groups of

broadleaf bushes were replaced with low cut lawns as well

as coni ferous trees and bushes. Those results were pre-

sented further in the section of this article titled “Greenery

of the district of Bronowice (since 1916)”.

Greenery of the village of Bronowice (until 1916)

In the foreground of his chart from 1618 [9] (Fig. 1, 2)

Abraham Hogenberg presented a panorama of Lublin in-

cluding the Great Royal Pond, the Bystrzyca River, the

Czerniejówka River and the row houses built in Brono-

wice next to them. The author also included the green ar-

eas created next to the houses – in the form of geometrical

gardens as well as natural forest areas located then to the

west of the village.

The map from 1852 by F. Bieczyński, which is a copy

of the plan by J.N. Łęcki from 1783 [10], shows the vil-

lages located around Lublin, such as Bronowice that had

ribbon development layouts then. Furthermore, the village

had at that time Bronowice Pond with houses along its

shore. That pond was a fragment of the Great Royal Pond

restored after the intervention of the residents of Lublin

in the middle of the 18

century. It was a shallow pool

located on a fertile soil with a peat and swampy bottom

with overgrown water plants [5]. It can be assumed that

the whole area was quite picturesque and had an attractive

looking landscape. The analyzed iconographic material

testies to fact that at the end of the 18

century the village

of Bronowice had maintained green areas in the form of

plants that served isolation purposes separating the areas

of different use or ownership, gardens designed around

buildings and strips green areas along transportation

The areas from the confluence of the Bystrzyca and Czerniejówka

Rivers eastward to the areas of the restored Great Royal Pond and

westward to the Lublin region meadows.

nasadzeń o funkcji izolacyjnej rozdzielającej tereny o od-

miennym sposobie użytkowania lub własności, ogrodów

towarzyszących zabudowie oraz zieleni sytuowanej przy

traktach komunikacyjnych. Można się domyślać istnienia

zarówno tradycyjnych przedogródków, ogrodów użytko-

wych, jak i nasadzeń nadwodnych.

W 1811 r. na terenie dawnych kopalni kamienia, na

gruntach folwarku Bronowice, nad Czerniejówką pod-

jęto akcję organizacji przestrzeni publicznych w postaci

łazienek przy zdrojach mineralnych

, które stały się za-

czątkiem parku zdrojowego. Źródła podają, że teren ten

i doceniane już na początku XIX w. Oprócz łazienek w Bronowicach

utworzono zakłady zdrojowe na Sławinku (osadzie leżącej wówczas

poza miastem) na gruntach Pawła Wagnera. Z inicjatywy wnuka Wag

nera – Stanisława Mędrkiewicza – zakład zdrojowy przemieniono na

na torium. Niestety pomimo dogodnej lokalizacji, zainwestowania

środków w infrastrukturę techniczną i rozbudowę zakładu, sanatorium

upadło. Oprócz klęsk żywiołowych głównym tego powodem była kon

kurencja prężnie rozwijającego się Parku Zdrojowego w Nałęczowie [11].

In 1811, an attempt was made to develop the public

space in the area of former stone mines on the land of

Bronowice grange by the Czerniejówka River to build

baths by mineral water springs

which were the original

elements of the future spa park. Sources indicate that the

city leased this area for fty years to Tomasz Baliński [12,

pp. 265, 266].

Another plan which was signicant for the analysis of

the transformations of greenery in Bronowice is the plan

The therapeutic qualities of Lublin ferruginous waters were well

known and appreciated already at the beginning of the 19

century.

Apart from the baths in Bronowice spa facilities were built in Sławinek

(settlement located then outside of the city) on the land owned by Paweł

Wagner. On the initiative of Wagner’s grandson – Stanisław Mędrkiewicz

– the spa facility was converted into a sanatorium. Unfortunately, in

spite of its convenient location, investment in technical infrastructure

and extension of the facility the sanatorium went bankrupt. Apart from

na tural disasters the main reason for that was competition of the dy na

mically growing Spa Park in Nałęczów [11].

wydzierżawiony został przez miasto na pięćdziesiąt lat

Tomaszowi Balińskiemu [12, s. 265, 266].

Kolejnym planem istotnym dla analizy przekształceń

zieleni Bronowic jest plan Lublina (il. 3) wykonany przez

sierżanta K.F. Kozłowskiego [13] („odrys z planu litogra-

cznego z 1829 r.”). Ukazuje on Bronowice i zlokalizo-

wany na ich terenie kamieniołom kamieni wapiennych,

brak jednak na nim uzdrowiska. Zaznaczono na nim wy-

soką zieleń, którą obsadzone były ciągi komunikacyjne

(trakt do Zamościa) oraz granice działek należących do

poszczególnych gospodarstw. Źródła podają, że w tym

okresie drogi obsadzane były najczęściej topolami wło-

skimi (Populus nigra „Italica”), zaś główne trakty wyjaz 

dowe z Lublina obsadzano również lipami (Tilia sp.)

i kasztanowcami (Aesculus sp.) [7, s. 163].

W 2. połowie XIX w. rozpoczął się okres intensywne-

go rozwoju dzielnicy przemysłowej umiejscowionej na

prawym brzegu Bystrzycy. W związku z planami budo-

wy młyna parowego na Czerniejówce, w 1856 r. Feliks

Bieczyński

zwrócił się do władz gubernialnych z ideą

utworzenia parku, który miał być usytuowany pomiędzy

dzisiejszymi ulicami: Fabryczną i Łęczyńską oraz rzeką

Czerniejówką. Projekt zakładał wykorzystanie natural-

nych zadrzewień wzdłuż Czerniejówki oraz uzupełnienie

skupisk i ciągów drzew na powierzchni 6,2 ha. Cztery

lata później Bieczyński opracował kolejny projekt dla

Michała Kośminka – ówczesnego właściciela folwarku

Bronowice (właściciela spółki przemysłowej „Kośmi-

nek”). Chciał on stworzyć na swych gruntach pierwszą

dzielnicę, gdzie zabudowa mieszkaniowa i przemysłowa

byłyby ze sobą racjonalnie powiązane. Projekt zakładał

powstanie wzorcowej kolonii domków robotniczych przy

młynie parowym, wraz z towarzyszącym im terenem zie-

leni – parkiem ludowym [14]. Kompozycja parku nawią-

zywała do założeń krajobrazowych. Park zlokalizowany

miał być pomiędzy traktami do Zamościa i Bychawy,

schodzącymi się przy rogatkach zamojskich [12, s. 269].

Jego plan obejmował Czerniejówkę, której brzeg miał

być obsadzony skupinami oraz ciągami drzew i krzewów.

Układ ścieżek planowano swobodny, wiodący do cen-

tralnej części, gdzie usytuowany miał być plac z altaną,

karuzelą, ławkami i przyrządami gimnastycznymi. W par-

ku zaplanowano również dom gościnny przy trakcie By-

chawskim [12, s. 270]. Niestety z przyczyn nansowych

zaniechano realizacji obydwu projektów Bieczyńskiego

[14]. Dopiero w 1868 r. na niezabudowanym terenie na-

leżącym do folwarku Bronowice powstał park ludowy –

Foksal

– założony według projektu autorstwa technika

Feliks ŁodziaBieczyński (1799–1866) – wychowanek Uniwer

sytetu Warszawskiego, architekt i mierniczy, bezpośredni realizator

wszelkich inwestycji miejskich, inżynier województwa lubelskiego,

zasłużony obywatel i działacz społeczny Lublina [12, s. 267].

Nazwa pochodzi od podlondyńskiej posiadłości Vauxhall, która

sławę zawdzięczała swojej właścicielce – Joannie Vaux. W 2. połowie

XVIII w. założyła ona bowiem ogród publiczny dla wyższej sfery,

w którym organizowano wystawne kolacje z wieczornymi przed sta wie

niami teatralnymi, muzyką, tańcem i pokazami sztucznych ogni. Słowo

„vauxhall” (foxal) stało się synonimem „zabawy wieczornej ogrodowej”.

Rosyjski rzeczownik „вокзал” czy jego polski odpo wied nik „foksal”

(foxsal, foxel) oznacza natomiast dworzec kolejowy. Tak na zy wano

of Lublin (Fig. 3) made by sergeant K.F. Kozłowski [13]

(the “copy from a lithographic plan in 1829”). It shows

Bronowice and a limestone quarry located in its area,

however, it doesn’t show the spa. It shows tall vegeta-

tion growing along circulation routes (route to Zamość)

as well as the boundaries of plots owned by individual

households. Sources indicate that the roads at that time

most often had Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra “Itali-

ca”), whereas the main outbound routes from Lublin had

also linden (Tilia sp.) and chestnut trees (Aesculus sp.) [6,

p. 163].

The industrial district located on the right bank of the

Bystrzyca River began to grow intensively in the 2

half of the 19

century. In 1856, in connection with the

planned construction of a steam mill on the Czerniejówka

River, Feliks Bieczyński

presented to the authorities an

idea of establishing a park that would be located between

the present day Fabryczna and Łęczyńska Streets and the

Czerniejówka River. The project assumed the use of natu-

ral wooded areas along the Czerniejówka River and ad-

ditionally planted trees on the area of 6.2 ha. Four years

later Bieczyński developed another project for Michał

Kośminek – the then owner of Bronowice grange (owner

of “Kośminek” industrial company). He wanted to create

on his land the rst district with residential and industrial

buildings that would be reasonably connected with each

other. The project included the construction of a model

colony of workers’ houses by the steam mill with a green

area i.e. people’s park around them [14]. The layout of

the park resembled a landscape design. The park was

supposed to be located between the route to Zamość and

Bychawa merging at the outskirts of Zamość [12, p. 269].

[8, s. 101]. Był on terenem ogólnodostępnym [14]. Roz-

planowano na nim sieć dróg, przewijającą się mię dzy

równomiernie zakomponowanymi grupami drzew i krze-

wów. W tym czasie w parku istniał wzniesiony przez tzw.

komitet trzeźwości [12, s. 270] teatr drewniany, w którym

koncertowała orkiestra wojskowa, a niezwykłą popular-

nością cieszył się bufet z kawą pod nazwą „Foksal” oraz

mleczarnia dzierżawiona przez państwa Wojdalińskich.

Do atrakcji należały wówczas także: tor do jazdy na wrot-

kach, wypożyczalnia szczudeł i pijalnia wód mineralnych.

Atrakcyjność parku spadła po 1889 r., a powodem tego

była lokalizacja w jej pobliżu rzeźni [14].

Nie mniej ważnym dla niniejszych rozważań jest plan

Lublina z 1875 r. (il. 4) wykonany przez Michała Donera

wi dać na planie, dziedziniec był powiązany z koleją,

a elementem łączącym obie struktury była dolina rzeki

Czer niejówki. Oba te tereny, tj. park na Bronowicach oraz

dziedziniec honorowy, charakteryzował zgeometryzo-

wany układ kompozycyjny. Roślinność wysoka sadzona

wzdłuż traktów stanowiła element ozdobny, podkreślają-

cy rangę drogi i orientujący w terenie, a także chroniący

przed warunkami atmosferycznymi. Obie przeanalizowa-

ne mapy (il. 3 i 4) potwierdzają, że Foksal zlokalizowany

został na terenach przylegających do wsi Bronowice, na

terenie starego kamieniołomu.

Angielski, bardziej kameralny typ „ogródka” wzorujący się na lon

dyńskim Vauxhallu czy wiedeńskim Praterze, o charakterze publicznym.

Składał się z rozmieszczonych w ogrodzie budynków oraz pawilonów

o różnych funkcjach. Mieściły się tu m.in. letnie teatrzyki, sale ban kie

towoteatralne, altany koncertowe, kręgielnie, strzelnice oraz restauracje

i kawiarnie. O ich ogromnej popularności decydowało połączenie

imprez kulturalnych z rekreacją na łonie natury [15, s. 15, 16].

Gazon miał kształt trójkąta. Był to trawnik z punktem centralnym

w postaci fontanny, zlokalizowany na przecięciu się trzech ścieżek.

Urządzenie wodne wykonane było z głazów i kamieni, z których trys ka

ła woda zdrojowa zasilana z wodociągu kolejowego [17].

Its planned area included the Czerniejówka River on

whose bank groups of trees and bushes were supposed

to be planted. Its pathways had a natural layout lead-

ing to a centrally located square with a bower, a carou-

sel, benches and gymnastic facilities. The park was de-

signed also with a guest house by the route to Bychawa

[12, p. 270]. Unfortunately, due to nancial reasons both

projects by Bieczyński were dropped [14]. Only in 1868

was the people’s park – Foksal

– created according to the

design of the city technician A. Zwierzchowski on a vacant

site which belonged to Bronowice grange. The area of the

park which was called établissement

was about 3.2 ha [8,

p. 101] and it was open to the general public [14]. It had

a network of roads going around uniformly laid out groups

of trees and bushes. At that time, there was a wooden the-

ater in the park built by so called sobriety committee [12,

p. 270] where a military orchestra gave concerts and a buf-

fet with coffee called “Foksal” as well as a dairy leased by

the Wojdalińskis enjoyed great popularity. Other attrac-

tions included a roller skate track, stilt rental, and mineral

water pump room. The park lost its attractiveness after

1889 as it was located near a slaughterhouse [14].

Another plan of Lublin which should be also mentioned

here is that from 1875 (Fig. 4) made by Michał Doner

[16]. It shows the green areas located on the right bank of

the Bystrzyca River i.e. a park in Bronowice and a court of

honor (cour d’honneur) on the stateowned land adjoin-

The name derives from Vauxhall located near London that be 

came famous because of its owner – Jane Vaux. In the 2

half of the 18

century, she established a public garden for high society where lavish

dinners were held with theater performances, music, dance, and fire

works. The word “vauxhall” (foxal) became synonymous with “evening

garden party”. On the other hand, the Russian noun “вокзал” or its Po 

lish equivalent “foksal” (foxsal, foxel) means a railway station. This is

the name used to call the first stations of the WarsawVienna Rail Road

(connecting Warsaw with Galicia in 1845) [11, p. 4].

English, more cozy type of a public “garden” modeled after

Vauxhall in London or Prater in Vienna. It consisted of different build

ings and pavilions located in the garden which served various functions.

They housed e.g. summer theaters, banquettheater rooms, concert shells,

bowling alleys, shooting ranges as well as restaurants and cafes. They

owe their great popularity to the combination of cultural events with

outdoor recreation [15, pp. 15, 16].

The planter was triangular. It was a lawn with a centrally located

fountain in the place where three paths crossed. A water facility was

Utworzenie w latach 1875–1877 połączenia kolejowe-

go na trasie z Lublina do Warszawy i Kowla spowodowa-

ło powstawanie licznych, małych i większych, zakładów

przemysłowych – również na gruntach Bronowic

. Istnie-

jący Foksal, pełniący funkcję ogrodu rozrywkowego, słu-

żył jako miejsce zabaw i rekreacji dla robotników, którzy

przybywali licznie do miasta, gdzie budowano dla nich

pośpiesznie nowe osiedle robotnicze. Osiedle robotnicze

(il. 5) związane było z przemysłem mineralnym i meta-

lowym [2] i sąsiadowało z zakładami produkcji betonu

i wypalania wapna czy terenami składów. Pod zabudo-

wę mieszkaniową (głównie kamienice czynszowe) wy-

korzystano tereny rolne i łąki. Nabywcami działek byli

głównie zamożni robotnicy, kolejarze i urzędnicy. Osią

rozwoju urbanistycznego osiedla stała się w tym czasie

ulica Łęczyńska, wytyczona w linii starego traktu do wsi

Tatary, przy linii kolejowej. Równolegle do niej wytraso-

wano ciąg prowadzący do rzeźni, a pomiędzy nimi w pro-

stokątnym układzie znajdowały się lokalne pasy ruchu

tworzące regularną siatkę podłużnych bloków zabudowy.

Z wyjątkiem ulicy Bronowickiej wszystkie ciągi komuni-

kacyjne były niebrukowane. Na ich przedłużeniu, po stro-

nie łąk nadbystrzyckich z czasem pojawiła się rozproszo-

na, spontanicznie wznoszona zabudowa mieszkaniowa.

Zabudowa mieszkaniowa osiedla robotniczego była zwar-

ta, a dwu i trzykondygnacyjne kamienice ustawione były

kalenicowo do ulic. Na podwórza najczęściej prowadziły

bramy przejazdowe, gdzie znajdowały się komórki, budyn-

ki gospodarcze i ustępy. Charakterystyczne rozwiązanie

miały kamienice przy skrzyżowaniach. Posiadały ścięte

narożniki z ozdobnymi szczytami – często stanowiły wej-

ście do zakładu lub sklepiku mieszczącego się na parterze.

Głównym materiałem budowlanym był kamień wapienny

wzmacniany ceglanymi przemurowaniami, co stwarzało

jednolity, lokalny charakter całego osiedla [9, s. 109, 110].

Przeanalizowane materiały kartograczne z XIX i po-

czątku XX w. świadczą o tym, że we wsi Bronowice za-

czynają się w tym czasie zarysowywać komponowane

układy zieleni w postaci Foksalu, zaś na terenie przed-

mieścia Piaski zieleniec powiązany z terenem kolei. Sta-

nowił on miejsce wypoczynku i rozrywki dla mieszkań-

ców miasta oraz robotników pracujących w pobliskich

zakładach przemysłowych. Jego popularność związana

była z obiektami usługowymi i atrakcjami, które ofero-

wał. W XIX w. wyraźnie zarysowuje się również granica

samej wsi, która pod koniec wieku zostaje przekształcona

w osiedle robotnicze.

Zieleń dzielnicy Bronowice (od 1916 r.)

W dniu 15 października 1916 r. teren wsi oraz folwar-

ku Bronowice włączono w granice administracyjne miasta

Lublina, jako jego dzielnicę [2]. Analiza porównawcza

planu z 1938 r. [18], mapy topogracznej z 1977 r. [19]

i współczesnych zdjęć satelitarnych [20] ukazuje, że do

czasów współczesnych osiedle robotnicze zachowało swój

railway station building. The plan shows the court con-

nected with the railway and the valley of the Czerniejówka

River was the element connecting both structures. Both of

those areas i.e. the park in Bronowice and the court of

honor had characteristic geometrical compositions. Tall

vegetation planted along routes served as decorative ele-

ments, emphasizing the signicance of the road and pro-

viding landscape landmarks as well as protection against

the elements. Both analyzed maps (Fig. 3 and 4) conrm

that Foksal was located on the area adjacent to the village

of Bronowice on the area of former quarry.

The construction of the railway connection from Lub

lin to Warsaw and Kowel in 1875–1877 resulted in the

emergence of numerous, smaller and bigger industrial

plants – including in Bronowice

. The existing Foksal

that was used as an amusement garden served as a place

of entertainment and recreation for a lot of workers who

visited the city where a new housing estate was soon built

for them. The workers’ housing estate (Fig. 5) was con-

nected with industries (both mineral and metal) [2] and it

was located next to concrete production plants and lime-

stone calcination or storage areas. The residential build-

ings (mainly tenement houses) were constructed on farm

lands and meadows. The plots were bought primarily by

wealthy workers, railway workers, and ofcials. The ur

ban development of the settlement spread at that time from

Łęczyńska Street which was laid out along the old route

to the village of Tatary by a railway line. A route leading

to the slaughterhouse was marked parallel to it with rect-

angular local trafc routes in between them, creating a re

gu lar grid of longitudinal blocks. None of the circulation

routes were stone paved except for Bronowicka Street.

They would extend towards the meadows by the By strzy

ca River where later on irregularly located re sidential

houses were built. The residential houses of the workers’

housing estate were densely built, and the two or three

storied houses had their ridges parallel to the roads. Typi-

cally, the households had gates leading to the yards with

sheds, farm buildings, and outhouses. The houses built

by crossroads had characteristic architectu ral solutions,

namely jerkinhead roofs with decorative gables – they of-

ten had an entrance to a shop located on the ground oor.

The main building material was limestone rein forced with

brick courses which gave the whole settlement a local

avor and made it look uniform [9, pp. 109, 110].

The analyzed cartographical materials from the 19

and

the beginning of the 20

centuries demonstrate that this is

the time when the rst greenery layout in the form of Fok-

sal and the green area on the outskirts of Piaski connected

with the railway plot began in the village of Bronowice.

It was a place for recreation and entertainment for

the city

residents and the workers from the nearby industrial plants.

Its popularity was connected with commercial places and

attractions it offered. The boundaries of the village itself,

made of boulders and stones from which mineral water supplied from

the railway water system would spout [17].

The biggest of them was E. Plage and Laśkiewicz Mechanical

Plant built in 1899–1902 which was transformed in 1935 into Lublin

Aircraft Factory [2].

Wraz z włączeniem Foksalu w granice administra-

cyjne Lublina uzyskał on miano parku miejskiego, któ-

ry nazwano Parkiem Bronowickim. W połowie lat 20.

XX w. podjęto próby przywrócenia mu świetności. Reno-

wację rozpoczęto od likwidacji rzeźni (1929) oraz skut-

ków wandalizmu. W miejscu rzeźni stanęła duża łaźnia

miejska, projektu arch. B. KellesKrauzego, nawiązująca

swoją formą do architektury dworskiej. W zamierzeniu

projektanta miała stać się „centrum zdrowotnym robotni-

czej dzielnicy Kośminek”. Sam budynek miał stanowić

jeden z obiektów zespołu rekreacyjnowypoczynkowego,

a park – miejsce spędzania wolnego czasu, wspomagające

higienę oraz propagujące wśród mieszkańców robotniczej

dzielnicy zdrowy styl życia [8, s. 101, 202, 226, 244].

Niestety, w 1931 r. Park Bronowicki został zniszczony

w wyniku huraganu. Źródła podają, że kataklizm spowo-

dował połamanie połowy drzewostanu, zaś z krzewów nie

pozostało prawie nic. Zniszczenia te stały się w pewien

sposób pretekstem do zmniejszenia powierzchni parku na

rzecz budowy nowych obiektów przemysłowych i infra-

strukturalnych. Kompozycja nowych nasadzeń zmieniła

ponadto zgeometryzowany układ parku na krajobrazowy.

W 1935 r. otwarto w nim ogród jordanowski, który otrzy-

mał nazwę „Ogródek dla dzieci im. Bolesława Świdziń-

skiego”

. Wyposażono go w różnorodne urządzenia do

zabaw i gier dla dzieci poniżej 10 lat.

Początkiem przekształcania Bronowic w nowoczesne

osiedle miejskie była budowa w latach 50. XX w. nowe-

go wielorodzinnego osiedla na terenach przyległych od

strony południowowschodniej do osiedla robotniczego.

ZOR Bronowice I wybudowano w latach 1954–1956,

Bronowice II i III

powstały zaś w latach 1956–1969 [2].

ZOR I i II charakteryzuje układ zabudowy kwartałowej

i obrzeżnej związanej z głównymi ulicami, wzdłuż któ-

rych urządzono pasy trawników z drzewami. Wewnętrzne

„dziedzińce – podwórka” przeznaczano na skwery z krze-

wami i bylinami, a przy uliczkach osiedlowych posa-

dzono pojedyncze drzewa. W latach 70. XX w. powstały

w dzielnicy Kośminek zespoły zabudowy wielorodzinnej

ZOR III (budownictwo wielkopłytowe) [21, s. 231]. Mię-

dzy blokami urządzono w tym czasie skwery z pojedyn-

czymi drzewami i krzewami ozdobnymi.

Zgodnie z opracowaniem z 1974 r. wykonanym na

zlecenie wojewódzkiego konserwatora zabytków [22],

na terenie Parku Bronowickiego zinwentaryzowano 500

drzew o obwodzie powyżej 20 cm oraz 2730 sztuk krze-

wów. Gatunki odnotowane na terenie parku to m.in.: brzo-

za bro dawkowata (Betula pendula), buk pospolity (Fa gus

sylvatica), głóg jednoszyjkowy (Crataegus monogyna),

kasztanowiec zwyczajny (Aesculus hippocastanum),

klon zwyczajny (Acer platanoides), lipa drobnolistna

(Tilia cordata), topola czarna (Populus nigra) i żywotnik

Bolesław Świdziński w latach 1930–1933 pełnił funkcję woje

wo dy lubelskiego, a do 1938 r. był posłem na Sejm RP z województwa

lubelskiego [14].

Zlokalizowane zostały na gruntach wsi Bronowice, jednak współ

cześnie stanowią jedno z osiedli dzielnicy Kośminek.

which at the end of the century turned into a workers’

housing estate also became clear in the 19

century.

Greenery of the district of Bronowice (since 1916)

On October 15, 1916, the area of the village and Brono-

wice grange was incorporated into the administrative area

of the city of Lublin as its district [4]. The comparative

analysis of the plan from 1938 (Fig. 5C) [18], the topo-

graphical map from 1977 (Fig. 6) [19] and the contempo-

rary satellite images [20] demonstrates that the workers’

housing estate has preserved its suburban character until

today. It has been possible because the industrial and rep-

resentative growth of the district stopped.

When Foksal was incorporated into the administrative

area of the city it became a city park called Bronowice

Park. In the middle of the 1920s, attempts were made to

restore its magnicence. The renovation of the park be-

gan with the liquidation of the slaughterhouse (1929)

and the results of vandalism. A large city bath designed

by architect B. KellesKrauze, whose form alluded to

manor architecture, was built in the place of the slaugh-

terhouse. According to the designer’s plan it was to be-

come a “health center for the workers’ housing estate Ko

ś minek”. The building itself was supposed to be one of

structures of the recreation and rest complex and the park

– a place to spend leisure time improving the hygiene and

promoting a healthy lifestyle among the residents of the

workers’ district.

Unfortunately, in 1931, Bronowice Park was destroyed

by a windstorm. According to sources as a result of that

natural disaster half of the trees were blown down and

almost none of the bushes survived. The damage was

used for some time as a reason for the diminishing of the

park’s area and building new industrial facilities and in-

frastructure there. Furthermore, the layout of new plant-

ings changed the geometric design of the park into a land-

scape one. In 1935, a Jordan’s garden called “Bolesław

Świdziński Garden for Children”

opened there. It was

equipped with various facilities for children under 10.

The construction of a new multifamily housing estate

in the 1950s in the area adjacent to the workers’ hous-

ing estate from southeast marks the beginning of the

transformation of Bronowice into a modern city residen-

tial estate. ZOR Bronowice I housing estate was built in

1954–1956; Bronowice II and III

were built in 1956–

1969 [2]. ZOR I and II have quarter and peripheral deve

lopment lay outs connected with main streets along which

there were strips of lawns with trees. The internal yards

were converted into squares with bushes and perennials,

and single trees were planted by the estate roads. In the

1970s, multifamily buildings ZOR III (large panel apart-

ment buildings) were constructed in Kośminek housing

Bolesław Świdziński in 1930–1933 held the position of governor

of Lublin Province, and until 1938 he was an MP of the Republic of

Poland from Lublin Province [14].

They were located on the land of the village of Bronowice, how

ever, at present they constitute one of the housing estates in Kośminek

district.

estate [21, p. 231] with squares with single trees and orna-

mental bushes in between the apartment blocks.

According to the survey from 1974 commissioned by

the province conservation ofcer [22], 500 trees with the

diameter over 20 cm and 2730 bushes were identied in

Bronowice Park. The species included silver birch (Betu-

la pendula), European beech (Fagus sylvatica), common

hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), common horsechestnut

(Aesculus hippocastanum), Norway maple (Acer platano-

ides), smallleaved linden (Tilia cordata), black poplar

(Populus nigra) and northern whitecedar (Thuja occiden

talis). Many bushes which were identied included yews

(Taxus sp.), black elder (Sambucus nigra), forsythias (For-

sythia sp.), philadelphus (Philadelphus sp.), privets (Li-

gustrum sp.), lilacs (Syringa sp.), symphoricarpos (Sym-

phoricarpos sp.). According to the survey the area of the

ower beds was 244 m

At present the park is surrounded from all sides by the

city architecture, and its area is 2.6 ha. Studies of Brono-

wice Park conducted in 2010–2011 prove that a great

majority of plants which were analyzed include perennial

species with cultivated grass as their undergrowth [23,

pp. 53–55]. The park is a natural “thin forest” and due to

the abundance of tall vegetation and the way it is main-

tained it can be considered to be a forest park [24, p. 3].

Another survey of the park conducted in 2013 demonstrat-

ed that the number of trees growing on its area decreased

by 50% in comparison to the survey from 1974 and the

colorful owerbeds were replaced with single color, easy

and economical to maintain lawns. The trees included

mainly European beeches (Fagus sylvatica), ashes (Fra-

xinus sp.), maples (Acer sp.), lindens (Tilia sp.), poplars

(Populus sp.) and elms (Ulmus sp.) with Norway maples

(Acer platanoides) whose diameter were 300–360 cm

being the oldest specimens [25, p. 29].

The analyzed archival and cartographic materials dem-

onstrated that the village of Bronowice turned in the 20

century into a residential district which at present consists

of “old and new” Bronowice – workers’ housing estate

and ZORs. The remaining areas, which in the 19

century

still belonged to the village and Bronowice grange, were

incorporated into other districts of Lublin i.e. Tatary in

the north and Kośminek in the south. “Old” Bronowice

maintained its suburban character – clearly visible urban

assumptions of the turn of the 19

and 20

centuries with

new urban units (ZOR I and II) attached to it, providing

thus a unique layout of the district.

The analysis of the evolution of the area of the village as

well as of the district of Bronowice demonstrated that riv-

er beds of two rovers – the Bystrzyca and the Czerniejów-

ka Rivers, with the place where one of them ows into the

other, were the axes along which the settlement started

to grow (Fig. 5)

. Foksal is the unquestionable landmark

The common point of the three plans from the 1820s [13], 1870s

[16] and the 1930s is the confluence of two rivers – the Bystrzyca and

Czerniejówka Rivers. The comparison of the plans indicates that the

valleys of the rivers were artificially regulated (Fig. 5). A) The plan

shows the village and Bronowice grange with the limestone quarry

which belonged to it. The area of the study with Zamość Route going

zachodni (Thuja occidentalis). Zinwentaryzowano rów-

nież liczne grupy krzewów, m.in.: cisy (Taxus sp.), czarny

bez (Sambucus nigra), forsycje (Forsythia sp.), jaśmi-

nowce (Philadelphus sp.), ligustry (Ligustrum sp.), lilaki

(Syringa sp.), śnieguliczki (Symphoricarpos sp.). Według

tej inwenta ryzacji powierzchnia rabat kwiatowych wyno-

siła 244 m

Obecnie park otoczony jest ze wszystkich stron przez

zabudowę miejską, a jego powierzchnia wynosi 2,6 ha.

Badania Parku Bronowice wykonane w latach 2010–2011

dowodzą, że wśród analizowanej ory zdecydowaną

większość stanowią gatunki wieloletnie, zaś rolę runa

odgrywają tu kultywowane murawy [23, s. 53–55]. Park

stanowi naturalistyczne założenie o charakterze „widnego

lasu”, zaś ze względu na ilość roślinności wysokiej i jej

ukształtowanie zaliczyć go można do parków leśnych [24,

s. 3]. Kolejna inwentaryzacja parku wykonana w 2013 r.

wykazała, że na jego terenie drzewostan zmniejszył się

o 50% w stosunku do inwentaryzacji z 1974 r., a barwne

rabaty zostały zastąpione monochromatycznymi, łatwymi

i ekonomicznymi w utrzymaniu i pielęgnacji trawnikami.

Na drzewostan składały się głównie: buki pospolite (Fa-

gus sylvatica), jesiony (Fraxinus sp.), klony (Acer sp.),

lipy (Tilia sp.), topole (Populus sp.) oraz wiązy (Ulmus

sp.). Najstarszymi zaś zinwentaryzowanymi egzempla-

rzami okazały się klony pospolite (Acer platanoides), któ-

rych obwód wahał się od 300 do 360 cm [25, s. 29].

Przeanalizowane materiały archiwalne i kartograczne

wykazały, że w XX w. ze wsi Bronowice powstała dziel-

nica mieszkaniowa, która obecnie składa się ze „starych

i nowych” Bronowic – osiedla robotniczego oraz ZORów.

Pozostałe zaś tereny, należące jeszcze w XIX w. do wsi

i folwarku Bronowice, zostały włączone w inne dzielnice

Lublina, tj. Tatary od północy i Kośminek od południa.

„Stare” Bronowice zachowały swój podmiejski charak-

ter – czytelność założenia urbanistycznego przełomu XIX

i XX w., do nich natomiast zostały przyłączone nowe jed-

nostki urbanistyczne (ZOR I i II), tworząc w ten sposób

niepowtarzalny układ dzielnicy.

Analiza ewolucji terenów wsi, a w dalszej kolejności

dzielnicy Bronowice (il. 5) wskazała, że osiami, wzdłuż

których zaczęła rozwijać się jednostka osadnicza, są ko-

ryta dwóch rzek – Bystrzycy i Czerniejówki, z miejscem

ujścia jednej w drugą

. Niewątpliwym identykatorem

Punktem wspólnym dla trzech powyższych planów z lat 20.

XIX w. [13], 70. XIX w. [16] i 30. XX w. jest punkt zbiegu dwóch rzek

– Bystrzycy i Czerniejówki. Zestawienie planów przedstawia, że doliny

dwóch rzek zostały w sztuczny sposób uregulowane (il. 5). A) Plan uka

zuje wieś oraz folwark Bronowice, z należącym do niego terenem kamie

niołomu kamieni wapiennych. Obszar opracowania, przecięty Traktem

Zamojskim, zlo kalizowany jest po prawej stronie rzeki Bystrzycy

i Czerniejówki. B) Na planie widać park na Bronowicach oraz zieleniec

umiejscowiony przed budynkiem dworca kolejowego, o geometrycznym

układzie kompozycyjnym, gdzie ich elementem scalającym jest dolina

rzeki Czerniejówki. Analiza planów A i B wskazuje miejsce usytuowania

Foksalu, tj. teren kamieniołomu, a także brak zabudowy folwarcznej. C)

Na planie przedstawiono tereny wsi oraz folwarku włączone w granice

administracyjne miasta Lublina. Ukazuje on pomniejszony teren parku,

po którego północnozachodniej stronie wyrosło osiedle robotnicze

wraz z nowymi obiektami przemysłowymi i infrastrukturalnymi. Na

planie autorka zaznaczyła również tereny folwarku, które po II wojnie

osiedla robotniczego jest Foksal, zaś obiekty architekto-

niczne, tj.: XIXwieczna zabudowa i infrastruktura ko-

lejowa, międzywojenne osiedle robotnicze oraz wielo-

rodzinna zabudowa ZOR, składają się na indywidualny

charakter całej współczesnej dzielnicy.

Początek XXI w. przyniósł jednak nowe potrzeby i idą-

ce za tym inwestycje budowlane. Konieczność wznosze-

nia nowych obiektów mieszkaniowych i infrastruktural-

nych stała się pretekstem do zmniejszenia powierzchni

zieleni na terenie omawianej dzielnicy. Efektem tego było

wykarczowanie 15 lutego 2015 r. 77 drzew na osiedlu

Bronowice II (ZOR), na skwerze o powierzchni 196 m

zlokalizowanym przy skrzyżowaniu ul. Drogi Męczen-

ników Majdanka oraz Krańcowej. Zdarzenie to było ne 

gatywnie odebrane, gdyż nie poprzedzono go jakimi-

kolwiek konsultacjami władz miasta z mieszkańcami.

Po wycięciu drzew społeczność lokalna wyraziła swoje

niezadowolenie poprzez liczne protesty, m.in. ustawienie

zniczy na pniach, wywieszenie transparentów negujących

postępowanie organów rządzących, wbicie białych krzy-

ży symbolizujących miejsca, w których wcześniej stały

światowej przeznaczono pod budowę nowych osiedli, tj. ZOR Bro no

wice I (1954–1956), Bronowice II i III (1956–1969).

way infrastructure, interwar workers’ housing estate and

the multifamily houses in ZOR provide a unique charac-

ter of the whole contemporary district.

The beginning of the 21

century, however, generated

new needs and resulted in new building developments.

The demand for new residential buildings and infrastruc-

ture became an excuse for the reduction of green areas

in that district. As a result 77 trees were cut down and

cleared on February 15, 2015 in Bronowice II housing

estate (ZOR) on a square of the area of 196 m

located

by the crossroads of Droga Męczenników Majdanka and

across it is located on the right bank of the Bystrzyca and Czerniejówka

Rivers. B) The plan shows the geometric layout of the park in Bro

nowice and the green area located in front of the railway station with the

valley of the Czerniejówka River being their main composition element.

The analysis of plan A and plan B indicates the location of Foksal i.e.

the area of the quarry and no grange buildings. C) The plan shows the

area of the village and the grange within the administrative boundaries

of the city of Lublin. It shows a diminished area of the park with

a workers’ housing estate as well as new industrial structures and in fra

structure in its northwest part. The author marked on the plan the area

of the grange where new housing estates i.e. ZOR Bronowice I (1954–

1956), Bronowice II and III (1956–1969) were built after World War II.

drzewa. Dowodzi to, że zieleń w kontekście współcze-

snych przekształceń staje się czymś więcej niż tylko „wy-

pełniaczem” przestrzeni. Pozwala to również wyciągnąć

wniosek, że społeczność lokalna zaczyna iść w kierunku

ogrodów wspólnotowych, które mogłyby tworzyć prze-

strzeń zbiorową dla całej dzielnicy.

Dokumentacja fotograczna wykonana w 1934 r. pod-

czas ceremonii otwarcia ogrodu jordanowskiego, a następ-

nie inwentaryzacje w latach 70. i po powstaniu ZORów

dały podstawy do rozpoznania określonych gatunków

szaty roślinnej terenu opracowania. Podział terenu dziel-

nicy pod względem jego przeznaczenia przygotowany

przez autorkę w 2016 r. (il. 6) pozwolił zaś w czytelny

sposób pogrupować i uporządkować zasoby, a także uka-

zać te, które stanowią swoistą jej wizytówkę. Wymienić

tu należy: zieleń nadrzeczną (wzdłuż rzek Bystrzycy

i Czerniejówki), zieleń Parku Bronowice, zieleń towarzy-

szącą zabudowie jednorodzinnej (osiedle robotnicze oraz

współczesne osiedle domków jednorodzinnych) i wielo-

rodzinnej (ZOR I i II), zieleń towarzyszącą instytucjom

publicznym, komunikacji kołowej i kolejowej, terenom

zabudowy usługowej i zakładom przemysłowym oraz

zieleń terenów „nieurządzonych”.

Krańcowa Streets. This incident was negatively received

as the city authorities did not consult the residents at all

before it. After the trees were cleared the local community

expressed its discontent in a number of protests, includ-

ing placing vigil candles on the tree stumps, displaying

banners criticizing the authorities, sticking white crosses

symbolizing the places where the trees used to grow. This

proves that in the context of contemporary transforma-

tions green areas are becoming more that just space “ll-

ers”. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the local com-

munity tends to prefer community gardens which might

create collective space for the whole district.

The photographic documentation made in 1934 dur-

ing the grand opening of the Jordan’s garden and then the

surveys conducted in the 1970s and after construction of

ZORs provided the basis for the identication of plants

growing in the studied area. The division of the district

by its function made by the author in 2016 (Fig. 6) pro-

vided a way to clearly group and put the resources in

order as well as distinguish the most valuable of them,

such as the green areas by the water (along the Bystrzyca

and the Czer niejówka Rivers), the greenery of Bronowice

Park, the greenery around singlefamily houses (workers’

Należy również podkreślić, że doliny Bystrzycy i Czer-

niejówki, które nieodłącznie związane były z lubelskimi

Bronowicami, stanowią nierozerwalny element systemu

przyrodniczego miasta (korytarze ekologiczne), a także

wchodzą w skład Ekologicznych Systemów Obszarów

Chronionych w granicach administracyjnych Lublina. Te-

reny te wpływają zatem na sprawne funkcjonowanie te-

renów zurbanizowanych oraz gwarantują dobre warunki

życia mieszkańcom.

Podsumowanie

Podjęty przez autorkę temat wskazał walory dzielnicy,

które nadają jej indywidualny charakter. Ewolucja prze-

kształceń ukazała, jak na terenach zajmowanych nie gdyś

przez naturalną roślinność powstała jednostka urbani-

styczna tworząca obraz współczesnej dzielnicy, a w dalszej

kolejności miasta. To duch miejsca ukształtował w miesz-

kańcach dzielnicy poczucie tożsamości, zaś duch czasu

uświadomił proces przemijania i ukazał ślady narastają-

cych po sobie epok, o które warto walczyć. Dla społecz-

ności wszystkie tereny zieleni to ich dobro wspólne. Uwa-

żane są bowiem za element nieodłączny, współgrający

z budownictwem mieszkaniowym, oraz miejsce do wypo-

czynku i rekreacji. Mając świadomość rozwoju dzielnicy,

autorka pragnęła zwrócić uwagę na konieczność prowa-

dzenia partycypacji społecznej i ochronę walorów miejsca.

Precedens z 2015 r. z jednej strony ukazał brak poszano-

wania szaty roślinnej przez władze, z drugiej zaś sprze-

ciw i niezadowolenie mieszkańców, gdyż wizja potrzeb

mieszkaniowych i inwestycyjnych nie może być realizo-

wana kosztem zawłaszczania i degradacji terenów zieleni.

Furthermore, it should be noted that the valleys of the

Bystrzyca and the Czerniejówka Rivers which have been

closely connected with Bronowice are an intrinsic element

of the natural system of the city (wildlife corridors) and

they belong to the Ecological Systems of Protected Areas

within the administrative boundaries of Lublin. Those ar-

eas affect then the efcient functioning of the urban areas

and guarantee good living conditions of its residents.

Summary

The subject selected by the author presented the quali-

ties of the district which constitute its unique character.

The evolution of the transformations demonstrated the de-

velopment of an urban unit constituting today the image

of the contemporary district and by extension of the city

in the area which was once covered with natural vegeta-

tion. This is the spirit of the place that created a sense of

identity in the residents of the district and the spirit of time

that made them realize the process of passing as well as

displayed the traces of old times coming one after another

which are worth ghting for. All green areas are the com-

mon good of the community as they are considered to be

an intrinsic element of residential architecture and places

of rest and recreation. Being aware of the growth of the

district, the author tried to draw attention to the necessity

of social participation and protection of the qualities of

the place. On the one hand, the precedent from 2015 de

monstrated the lack of respect for the nature on the part of

authorities and, a protest as well as discontent of the resi-

dents, on the other hand, because the vision of the housing

and development needs cannot be pursued at the cost of

appropriation and degradation of green areas.

Streszczenie

Artykuł dotyczy analizy przekształceń terenów zieleni dzielnicy Bronowice w Lublinie. Przedstawiono w nim analizę ewolucji jednostki urbani-

stycznej, która w istotny sposób wpłynęła na ukształtowanie obecnego systemu zieleni. Omówiono również istniejące współczesne tereny zieleni

i ich usytuowanie, w znaczący sposób wpływające na warunki mikroklimatyczne terenów miejskich, a także wzmacniające struktury przyrodnicze.

W artykule autorka przeanalizowała też tradycję miejsca w kontekście współczesnych przekształceń. Ukazała, jak społeczność lokalna odbiera zieleń

i jak odnosi się do gwałtownych przemian inwestycyjnych w dzielnicy.

Abstract

The article concerns the analysis of the transformation of the green areas of the Bronowice district in Lublin. It presents an analysis of the evolution

of an urban unit, which signicantly affected the format of the present greenery system. The existing contemporary green areas and their location are

also shown, which signicantly affect the microclimatic conditions of urban areas, and also reinforce the natural structures. In the article the author

also has analyzed the tradition of the place in the context of contemporary transformations. She showed how the local community receive green, and

how they relate to the rapid changes of investment in the district.
