Carl Lüdecke i wrocławskie budownictwo mieszkaniowe /Carl Lüdecke and dwelling-houses in Wrocław 11
waniu [...] pałaców, miejskich domów mieszkalnych i sie-
budowlanej

[cyt. za: 9, s. 333]. Elewacje frontowe do-
mów miejskich wznoszonych w zabudowie zwartej wy-
magały, według Stiera, [...] jaśniejszego wyrazu estetyki
detalu [...] niż daje to grecka sztuka budowlana
10
[cyt. za:

z [...] pewnym kosmopolitycznym brakiem charakteru,
jako towaru dla wszystkich, wychodzącego spod fabrycz-
nego stempla
11
architektury antycznej” [10, s. 19].
[11, s. 343]. Z pluralizmem stylowym głoszonym przez
Stiera Lüdecke zapoznał się w czasie studiów, któ re odbył
w berlińskiej szkole architektury w latach 1846–1849
12
[12, s. 3]. Akademia Budownictwa ukształtowała poglądy
estetyczne Lüdeckego, architekt dostrzegał jednak man-
kamenty obowiązującego tam systemu nau czania. Uwa-
elementów konstrukcyjnych i ornamentów sztuki średnio-
wiecza, czego negatywne skutki odczuł, jak twierdził,
rów nież we własnej praktyce [7, s. 216].
Jako jeden z nielicznych twórców Lüdecke zwracał
uwagę na ograniczenia w wyborze stylu budowli, będące
kon sek wencją obowiązujących ustaw budowlanych [7,
s. 215]. Architekt zapewne zgadzał się z wizją ulicy miej-
skiej przedstawioną przez Ungewittera na stronie tytułowej
zbioru Projektów domów miejskich i wiejskich, na której
cza motywami – szczytami, wieżami i wykuszami [14].
kondygnacji i wysokości domu miejskiego uniemożliwia -
stosować w budynkach mieszkalnych wykuszy i wież. Wy-

Lüdecke należał też do Związku Studentów „Motiv” (Studenten-
verein „Motiv”), założonego przez Stiera w 1847 r. [13, s. 2, 3].
William Stier shaped his aesthetic views during his
studies in Paris (1820–1821) and a several-year stay in
Ita ly (1822–1827), where he carried out research on an-
cient residential development. Stier believed that anti-
quity and the Renaissance, understood as its continuation,
should constitute the basis of contemporary construction
art, particularly clear, as he said, in shaping [...] pala ces,
town residential houses and rural residences [quoted
in: 9, p. 333]. According to Stier, town houses for both
mercantile and housing purposes, for which patterns in
the ancient Greek architecture cannot be found, should
be [...] subordinated to the ancient Roman construction
style or directly to the stylish mark of the Italian construc-
tion school
9
[quoted in: 9, p. 333]. Front facades of ur-
ban houses built in the compact development required,
acco r ding to Stier, [...] a clearer expression of the aes-
thetic detail [...] than it is in the case of Greek construc-
tion art
10
[quoted in: 9, p. 333]. The architect encouraged
designing houses with [...] a certain cosmopolitan lack of
character as a product for everyone marked with a factory
stamp
11
[quoted in: 9, p. 333].
Stier shared his thoughts with the students of the Aca-
demy of Construction in Berlin where he conducted
“Design ing and drawing constructions” classes and gave
lectures on the history of architecture since 1828, whereas
since 1829 he conducted “Ancient architecture forms”
classes [10, p. 19]. At the same time he was considered to
be a modern teacher because in his speeches he presented
not only monuments of ancient art but also achievements
of masters of the Middle Ages [11, p. 343]. Lüdecke be-
came acquainted with stylish pluralism proclaimed by
Stier during his studies in the Berlin school of architec-
ture in the years 1846–1849
12
[12, p. 3]. The Academy of
Construction shaped Lüdecke’s aesthetic views, however,
the architect saw some shortcomings of the existing edu-
cational system there. He believed that not enough time
was devoted to classes in drawing structural elements and
ornaments of art of the Middle Ages, the negative effects
of which he felt, as he claimed, even in his own practice
[7, p. 216].
As one of a few artists Lüdecke drew attention to the
limitations in choosing a building style, which resulted
from construction laws in force at that time [7, p. 215].
The architect undoubtedly agreed with a vision of the ur-
ban street presented by Ungewitter on the title page of the
collection of Projects of urban and rural houses, where
residential buildings with artistically relaxed shapes di-
versifi ed with motifs characteristic of the Middle Ages –
gables, turrets and bay windows were shown [14]. He be-
lieved, however, that the construction law did not permit
designing residential buildings based on Gothic Wrocław

Lüdecke also belonged to “Motiv” Student Association (Studen-
tenverein “Motiv”) established by Stier in 1847 [13, pp. 2, 3].
