Abstract

The article discusses changes in the role and methods of teaching art subjects at the Faculty of Architecture of Wrocław University of Science and Technology caused by several modifications of the architects’ education program. The change process contained two opposing poles. On the one hand, the time devoted to conducting classes was shortened; from 450 hours in 1946 to 182 hours in 2007. It was connected with the successive narrowing of the problem issues of classes. This situation was complicated by two more facts: a change in the philosophy of initial design classes and the progressive presence of the computer in the design process, significantly changing the principles of cooperation between students and lecturers. It was connected with the extension of the issues of composition in the curriculum so that a large part of these exercises was carried out in the consultation mode with assigning the work to be done by students as homework. Another problem that was also noticed was the growing lack of ability to record space by students by means of freehand drawing. Thus, with the ever-shorter curriculum, there was also a need to introduce new aspects to art education. The author suggests increasing the number of exercises/classes to explore and create space on various scales and in different aspects, so as to develop the potential of students and show them how to fully observe and experience the world around us, at the same time giving them the tools to change it. It would be possible with a comprehensive revision of the architects’ curriculum at the Faculty of Architecture of Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

Changes in the role of art subjects and methods of their teaching

in the context of the architects’ curriculum at the Faculty of Architecture

of Wrocław University of Science and Technology

The 1990s and the rst decade of the 21

century

brought a signicant reduction in the number of hours of

art subjects in the curriculum at the Faculty of Architec-

ture of Wrocław University of Science and Technology

(WA PWr). In order to analyze the effects of this change,

we should follow the process of teaching art subjects

in a broader time perspective, in the case of the Faculty

of Architecture of Wrocław University of Science and

Technology from 1945 to our times. This analysis will

allow a clear description of the changes and thus make

it possible to respond to them in the context of the cur-

rent education program (curriculum). We need to identify

their causes, dene the effects in the didactic process and

refer to certain “invariants” (ideological, programmatic,

methodical), if they exist, based on a broader cultural

and technological background. The starting point of this

analysis is to trace the changes in the process of teach-

ing art subjects, in particular drawing, which was the

rst way in which the mental activity of man was re-

corded, and it also applies to the recording of architectural

Lata 90. XX w. i pierwsza dekada XXI w. przyniosły

znaczną redukcję godzin z przedmiotów plastycznych

w programie nauczania na Wydziale Architektury Po-

litechniki Wrocławskiej (WA PWr). Żeby zanalizować

skut ki tej zmiany, należy prześledzić proces naucza-

nia przedmiotów plastycznych w szerszej perspektywie

czasowej, w przypadku Wydziału Architektury PWr od

1945 r. do dzisiaj. Analiza ta pozwoli na czytelny opis

zmian i ustosunkowanie się do nich w kontekście obo-

wiązującego programu kształcenia. Należy zidentyko-

wać ich przyczy ny, zdeniować skutki w procesie dydak-

tycznym oraz odnieść się do pewnych „niezmienników”

(ideo wych, programowych, metodycznych), jeśli takowe

istnieją, w oparciu o szersze tło kulturowe i technologicz-

ne. Punktem wyjścia tej analizy jest prześledzenie zmian

w procesie nauczania przedmiotów plastycznych, w tym

ideas, spatial forms and guidelines for builders. This pro-

cess is extensive and essential to the formation of the ba-

sis for the emergence of ideas and culture of their record-

ing, thus bringing about the materialization of concepts

[2, pp. 43–45, 50–53].

1945–1955. Tradition, intuition, values

In 1945, the Faculty of Civil Engineering was estab-

lished at the Wrocław University of Technology with the

assumption of the possibility of division into two separate

branches: Engineering and Architecture. In 1946, at the

Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Construction

among the branches that were created was, inter alia, the

Cathedral of Hand Drawing [3, p. 48]. In 1949, an inde-

pendent Faculty of Architecture was created [3, p. 48]

. In

the rst years, classes in art subjects lasted 10 semesters

(450 hours) and included a wide range of topics as well

as drawing and painting techniques taught throughout the

whole course of studies.

1956–1965. Tradition, intuition, values continued

During this period, art subjects were taught only for

8 semesters (360 hours), but without changing the way

classes were conducted. The time constraint, although

visible, did not yet signicantly inuence the level of

teaching and the objectives set by the founder of the De-

partment Professor Dobrosław Czajka. This is evidenced

by the student works from that period that can be found

in the archives.

1966–1990. “Resistance of the logical structure

of teaching”. Triad: Department of Drawing,

Painting and Sculpture

– Department of Descriptive Geometry

– Preliminary Design Department

In those years, art subjects were limited to six semes-

ters (270 hours). From 1946 to 1980 (according to the

author’s knowledge), there were no formal provisions

regarding the purpose of teaching, which does not mean

that there was no such purpose. In his statement on the

occasion of the 25

anniversary of the Faculty, Profes-

sor Dobrosław Czajka, the rst head of the Department

of Freehand Drawing, later the Cathedral of the Depart-

ment of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, who held this

function until 1980, wrote about the program assump-

tions:    

It should be remembered that the Wrocław school of architecture

originates from Lvov. As we know, many professors of the Lvov Poly

technic after World War II settled in Wrocław and made an effort to

create a technical university.

zapisu idei architektonicznych, form przestrzennych

i wytycznych dla budowniczych. Proces ten jest rozległy

i podstawowy dla kształtowania się podglebia powstawa-

nia idei i kultury ich zapisu, dla doprowadzenia do mate-

rializacji koncepcji [2, s. 43–45, 50–53].

1945–1955. Tradycja, intuicja, wartości

W 1945 r. na Politechnice Wrocławskiej powstał Wy-

dział Budownictwa z założeniem możliwości podziału

na dwa odrębne oddziały: Inżynierii oraz Architektury.

W 1946 r. na Oddziale Architektury Wydziału Budow-

nictwa utworzono m.in. Katedrę Rysunku Odręcznego [3,

s. 48]. W 1949 r. powstał samodzielny Wydział Architek-

tury [3, s. 48]

. W tych pierwszych latach zajęcia z przed-

miotów plastycznych trwały 10 semestrów (450 godz.)

i obejmowały szeroki wachlarz tematów oraz technik ry-

sunkowych i malarskich realizowanych przez całe studia.

1956–1965. Tradycja, intuicja, wartości cd.

W tym okresie przedmioty plastyczne obecne były już

tylko osiem semestrów (360 godz.), jednak bez zmiany

sposobu prowadzenia zajęć. Ograniczenie czasowe, choć

widoczne, nie wpłynęło jeszcze istotnie na poziom na-

uczania i realizację celów wyznaczonych przez założy-

ciela Zakładu prof. Dobrosława Czajkę. Świadczą o tym

pozostałe w archiwum prace studenckie z tego okresu.

1966–1990. „Opór logicznej struktury nauczania”.

Triada: Zakład Rysunku, Malarstwa i Rzeźby

– Zakład Geometrii Wykreślnej

– Zakład Projektowania Wstępnego

W tych latach przedmioty plastyczne ograniczono do

sześciu semestrów (270 godz.). Od 1946 do 1980 r. (wg

wiedzy autora) nie istniały sformalizowane zapisy doty-

czące celu nauczania, co nie znaczy, że takiego celu nie

było. W wypowiedzi z okazji 25lecia Wydziału prof. Do

brosław Czajka, pierwszy kierownik Katedry Rysunku Od 

ręcznego, a później Katedry Zakładu Rysunku, Malarstwa

i Rzeźby, pełniący tę funkcję do 1980 r. tak pisał o zało-

żeniach programowych: -

Przypomnieć należy, że wrocławska szkoła architektury wywodzi

się ze Lwowa. Jak wiadomo, wielu profesorów tamtejszej Politechniki

po II wojnie światowej osiedliło się we Wrocławiu i podjęło trud two

A few years later, in 1979, Professor Czajka, discussing

the purpose of teaching art subjects on another occasion,

drew attention to such basic values as order, beauty and

harmony, having a decisive inuence on shaping the hu-

man environment, and on the fact that teaching should be

based mainly on studies of nature of various forms, geo-

metric solids, complexes and utility objects [6]. It should

be noted that the program outlined by Prof. Czajka in

a very concise way almost exhausts the problems of art

education of architecture students. The key issue here is

the time devoted to classes (Fig. 1). The more time, the

greater the variety of exercises.

In the Department of Drawing, Painting and Sculp-

ture there are many student works from universities of

Gdańsk, Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław that took part in

a collective exhibition held in Wrocław in the 1960s. This

exhibition in its material layer best described the princi-

ples (subject, technique, manner of implementation) and

the level of education at the then leading faculties of ar-

chitecture (Fig. 2). With some differences resulting from

local traditions or the inuence of strong didactic person-

alities [7], [5, p. 90] we can notice two common features:

a high level of workshop and a wide range of artistic

problems presented in both drawing and painting works.

What strikes is also the variety of techniques. The educa-

tional effects visible in the presented works are related to

the time devoted to art education in the curricula at the

faculties of architecture. We can often notice a fairly large

convergence with the works created at art academies. This

is due to several reasons, such as a broad program, the

time devoted to its implementation and the leading pro-

fessors who often worked simultaneously in the faculties

of architecture and in art academies [5, p. 90].

At the end the 1970s and in the 1980s WA PWr saw

two opposing tendencies: the Department of Draw-

ing, Painting and Sculpture continued the curriculum

in a somewhat narrow range, but it was met with strong

pressure from the designers to increase the number of

classes teaching purely utilitarian skills such as design

sketches, drawing perspectives, exercises in staffage, etc.

The Department’s stance was (and this is conrmed by

maintaining the subject matter of the classes) that it is

more important to develop the general artistic sensitiv-

ity affecting the solving of formal problems typical of

prof. Czajka, omawiając przy innej okazji cel nauczania

przedmiotów plastycznych, zwrócił uwagę na takie pod-

stawowe wartości jak ład, piękno i harmonia, mające de-

cydujący wpływ na kształtowanie środowiska człowieka,

i na to, że nauczanie powinno się opierać głównie na stu-

diach z natury różnych form, brył geo metrycznych, zespo-

łów i przedmiotów użytkowych [6]. Należy zauważyć, że

program zarysowany przez prof. Czajkę w sposób bardzo

zwięzły niemalże wyczerpuje problematykę kształcenia

plastycznego studentów architektury. Kluczowa jest tu

kwestia czasu przeznaczonego na zajęcia (il. 1). Im wię-

cej czasu, tym większa różnorodność ćwiczeń.

W Zakładzie Rysunku, Malarstwa i Rzeźby PWr zacho 

wały się liczne prace studenckie z uczelni w Gdańsku,

War szawie, Krakowie i Wrocławiu biorące udział w wy-

stawie zbiorowej we Wrocławiu w latach 60. XX w. Wy-

stawa ta w swojej warstwie materialnej w najlepszy spo-

sób przed stawiała zasady (tematyka, technika, sposób

wykonania) i poziom kształcenia na wiodących wtedy

wydziałach architektury (il. 2). Przy pewnych różnicach

wynikających z tradycji lokalnych lub wpływu silnych

osobowości dydaktyków [7], [5, s. 90] można zauważyć

dwie cechy wspólne: wysoki poziom warsztatowy oraz

szeroki wachlarz problemów plastycznych przedstawia-

nych w pracach, zarówno rysunkowych, jak i malarskich.

Uderza również różnorodność technik. Efekty kształcenia

widoczne na prezentowanych pracach wiążą się z czasem

przeznaczonym na edukację plastyczną w programach

nauczania na wydziałach architektury. Można zauważyć

często dość dużą zbieżność z pracami powstającymi na

akademiach sztuk pięknych. Wynika to z kilku przyczyn:

szerokiego programu, czasu przeznaczonego na jego re-

alizację i prowadzących profesorów pracujących często

równolegle na wydziałach architektury i w akademiach

sztuk pięknych [5, s. 90].

Pod koniec lat 70. i w latach 80. XX w. zderzały się

na Wydziale Architektury PWr dwie tendencje: Zakład

Rysunku, Malarstwa i Rzeźby kontynuował w nieco okro-

jonym zakresie program nauczania, spotykał się jednak

z silnymi naciskami ze strony projektantów na zwięk-

szenie ćwiczeń dających czysto utylitarne umiejętności

jak szkice projektowe, rysowanie perspektyw, ćwicze-

nie sztafażu itp. Zakład stał na stanowisku (świadczy

o tym utrzymanie tematyki ćwiczeń), że ważniejsze jest

rozwi janie ogólnej wrażliwości plastycznej wpływają

cej na

broadly understood art, of course with the awareness that

future architects are educated here. The problem of see-

ing and recording space in the sketches, exercises in de-

picting different matter in the drawing was not so strong-

ly emphasized due to the constantly functioning logical

structure of teaching at the faculty. The curriculum de-

veloped initial design, where according to the plan of

Professor Kazimierz Ciechanowski, the problem of see-

ing and recording space was consistently introduced step

by step in the sequence of tasks from the role of point,

line, elements of the plane in the eld of composition

through the introduction to lettering to spatial composi-

tions lacking function with attention to keeping adequate

records of the exercises. The Department of Geometry,

in turn, provided knowledge and skills regarding the pro-

jection of space on a plane. The design teaching process

included obligatory conceptual spatial sketches at every

stage, perspective sketches, and nal perspectives. This

has relieved the program of the Drawing, Painting and

Sculpture Department from the problem of the “utilitar-

ian use of drawing”. It can be said that the Department

defended itself against the implementation of a narrow

i zapisu przestrzeni w szkicach, ćwiczenia w oddawaniu

różnej ma terii w rysunku nie był tak mocno akcentowa-

ny ze względu na ciągle funkcjonującą logiczną struk-

turę nauczania na wydziale. W programie nauczania

rozwinięte było projektowanie wstępne, gdzie według

planu prof. Ka zimierza Ciechanowskiego problem wi-

dzenia i zapisu przestrzeni był konsekwentnie krok po

kroku wprowadzany w sekwencji zadań od roli punktu,

linii, elementów płaszczyzny w polu kompozycji przez

propedeutykę liternictwa do kompozycji przestrzennych

nieobarczonych funkcją z dbałością o adekwatny zapis

ćwiczenia. Zakład Geometrii z kolei dostarczał wiedzy

i umiejętności dotyczących projekcji przestrzeni na płasz-

czyznę. Proces nauczania projektowania zawierał obli-

gatoryjnie koncepcyjne szkice przestrzenne na każdym

jego etapie, szkice perspektywiczne, wreszcie perspek-

tywy nalne. To odciążało program Zakładu Rysunku,

Malarstwa i Rzeźby od problematyki „utylitarnego sto-

sowania rysunku”. Można powiedzieć, że Zakład bronił

się przed realizacją wąskiej funkcji nauczania prezenta-

teaching function of the project presentation to build as

much as possible awareness of the plastic and spatial is-

sues, as well as close, interchangeable relations between

architecture, drawing, painting and sculpture. During

this period, there was a natural, factual, informal cohe-

sion and cooperation between individual didactic units.

At this point, we cannot fail to mention a new subject that

further enriched the curriculum. In the second half of the

1970s, Professor Zdzisław Jurkiewicz proposed the in-

troduction of the theory of colour. This subject perfectly

complemented the theoretical part of the art classes and

enjoyed great popularity among students.

1991–2006. A growing computer fetish

In the next period, the education program still provid-

ed for six semesters of classes. At that time, a computer

was gradually introduced into the learning process in an

unobtrusive way. The new design tool took a prominent

place in the minds of many people, casting – at least tem-

porarily – in the shade the traditional design methods,

especially the initial stage of searching for and recording

ideas using sketches, perspective drawings. It also hit

the visual art classes with a ricochet. It took a long time

to understand that this tool enriches the design poten-

tial and the possibilities of creation of many visual and

spatial phenomena. This found its reection in the new

curriculum of art subjects in 2006. Meanwhile, in 1995

the aim of teaching drawing and painting at the Faculty

of Architecture of University of Technology was dened

This aspect was emphasized by Professor Jurkiewicz,

miocie dodatkowo wzbogacającym program nauczania.

W drugiej połowie lat 70. prof. Zdzi sław Jurkiewicz za-

proponował wprowadzenie teorii koloru. Przedmiot ten

w znako mity sposób uzupełniał od strony teoretycznej za-

jęcia z przedmiotów plastycznych i cieszył się dużym po-

wodzeniem wśród studentów.

1991–2006. Rosnący fetysz komputera

Program dydaktyczny w kolejnym okresie nadal prze

widywał sześć semestrów zajęć. W tym czasie stopnio wo,

niepostrzeżenie do procesu nauczania zaczęto wprowadzać

komputer. Nowe narzędzie projektowe zajęło w umysłach

wielu osób poczesne miejsce, usuwając – przynajmniej

przejściowo – w cień tradycyjne metody pro jektowania,

szczególnie wstępny etap poszukiwań i zapi su pomysłów

za pomocą szkiców, rysunków perspektywicznych. Ude-

rzało to rykoszetem również w przedmioty plastyczne.

Musiało minąć sporo czasu, by zrozumiano, że narzędzie

to wzbogaca potencjał projektowy i możliwości kreacji

wielu zjawisk plastycznoprzestrzennych. Znalazło to

swo je odbicie w nowym programie nauczania przedmio-

tów plastycznych w 2006 r. Tymczasem w 1995 r. cel

naucza nia rysunku i malarstwa na Wydziale Architektury

head of the Department of Drawing, Painting and

Sculpture in 1987–1994 and 1998–2002. It was a short

manifesto of the aspirations of the Department in its re-

lations with successive generations of students despite

increasing difculties, having their sources in the bu-

reaucratic approach to the educational process and in the

growing diversity of attitudes of teaching staff towards

the education of future architects, the attitudes often ex-

cluding one another.

Revelling in the computerization process, an unjusti-

ed complex about the traditional way of designing, un-

derestimating the role of nature in the teaching process

and the total change of the program and the philosophy of

initial design forced the Department of Drawing, Paint-

ing and Sculpture to introduce another substantial modi-

cation of the curriculum. A very signicant unexpected

problem that had to be solved was the painful limitation

the duration of individual classes. The previous three clock

hours have been replaced (due to lack of space for didactics)

with three teaching hours – the difference is 45 minutes.

Finally, it was necessary to refer to the new core curricu-

lum, which turned out to be very restrictive towards art

subjects, assuming less than four semesters for teaching

them. This new situation, the decision to break the course

of uniform studies into engineering and master’s degree

studies made it even more difcult to work on the opti-

mal curriculum; it damaged the established tradition of art

education at the WA PWr (Table 1).

Classes in drawing, painting and sculpture have always

been, are and probably will be run in a formula known

for hundreds of years, and this is because in this process

the relationship of student–nature–teacher is required.

This relationship can occur with the appropriate amount

of time allocated to particular classes.

2007–2017. Defence of common sense

Since 2007 there has been a breakdown of conducting

art subjects into two parts (phases): 2 years of education

with a uniform program, obligatory for all students in the

composition and art block (4 semesters at the 1

and 2

year); 1 year (semester 5 and 6, year III) for one elec-

tive subject per semester (total of 182 hours). It was about

40% of the time allocated to these classes compared to

the year 1946.

The division of teaching art subjects into two phases

was forced by the change of the program and the proposal

of the core that posed a threat of the total marginalization

of art issues, previously recognized, among others by

Pro fessor Czajka, as the leading major subjects. The pre

paration of the new order of classes was undertaken by

Professor Leszek Maluga along with the author of this ar-

ticle. The project was subject to consultation with the en-

tire team. This study was an attempt to preserve the core

of art issues, conveyed to students from the beginning

of the Faculty of Architecture in the postwar structure

of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The

pre vious education system clearly accented, according

to tradition, three basic sections: drawing, painting and

sculpture. They were recorded in the student credit books

Zakładu Rysunku, Malarstwa i Rzeźby w latach 1987–

1994 i 1998–2002. Był to skrócony manifest dążeń Zakła-

du w jego relacjach z kolejnymi pokoleniami studentów

mimo narastających utrudnień, mających swoje źródła

w biurokratycznym podejściu do procesu kształcenia oraz

w rosnącej różnorodności postaw kadry nauczającej wo-

bec kształcenia przyszłych architektów, postaw często się

wykluczających.

Zachłyśnięcie się procesem komputeryzacji, nieuza-

sadniony kompleks wobec tradycyjnego sposobu prowa-

dzenia projektowania, niedocenianie roli natury w proce-

sie nauczania oraz całkowita zmiana programu i lozoi

projektowania wstępnego zmusiły Zakład Rysunku, Ma-

larstwa i Rzeźby do kolejnej istotnej modykacji pro-

gramu nauczania. Bardzo znaczącym niespodziewanym

problemem, który należało rozwiązać, było bolesne ogra-

niczenie czasu trwania pojedynczych zajęć. Dotychcza-

sowe trzy godziny zegarowe zastąpiono (ze względu na

braki powierzchni do dydaktyki) trzema godzinami lek-

cyjnymi – różnica to 45 min. Wreszcie należało się od-

nieść do nowej podstawy programowej, która okazała się

bardzo restrykcyjna wobec przedmiotów plastycznych,

przewidując na nie niecałe cztery semestry. Ta nowa sytu-

acja, decyzja o rozbiciu toku jednolitych studiów na stu-

dia inżynierskie i magisterskie jeszcze bardziej utrudniły

pracę nad optymalnym programem zajęć; niszczyły wy-

pracowaną tradycję kształcenia plastycznego na Wydziale

Architektury PWr (tab. 1).

Zajęcia z rysunku, malarstwa i rzeźby zawsze były, są

i prawdopodobnie będą prowadzone w formule znanej od

setek lat, a to dlatego, że w tym procesie wymagana jest

relacja: student–natura–prowadzący. Relacja ta może za-

istnieć przy odpowiedniej ilości czasu przeznaczonego na

poszczególne zajęcia.

2007–2017. Obrona zdrowego rozsądku

Od 2007 r. nastąpiło rozbicie prowadzenia przedmio-

tów plastycznych na dwie części (fazy): 2 lata kształcenia

z programem jednolitym, obligatoryjnym dla wszystkich

studentów w bloku kompozycyjnoplastycznym (4 seme-

stry na I i II roku); 1 rok (semestr 5 i 6, III rok) po jednym

przedmiocie wybieralnym w semestrze (razem 182 godz.).

Było to około 40% czasu przeznaczonego na te zajęcia

w porównaniu z rokiem 1946.

Rozbicie nauczania przedmiotów plastycznych na

dwie fazy wymuszone zostało zmianą programu i propo-

zycją podstawy, która groziła całkowitą marginalizacją

zagadnień plastycznych, uznawanych wcześniej, m.in.

przez prof. Czajkę, za wiodące – kierunkowe. Przygo-

towania nowego porządku zajęć podjął się prof. Leszek

Maluga z autorem. Projekt poddany był konsultacji całe-

go zespołu. Opracowanie to było próbą zachowania rdze-

nia problematyki plastycznej, przekazywanej studentom

od początku istnienia Wydziału Architektury w powo-

jennej strukturze Politechniki Wrocławskiej. Dotychcza-

sowy system kształcenia wyraźnie akcentował zgodnie

z tradycją trzy podstawowe działy: rysunek, malarstwo

i rzeźbę. Były one zapisane w indeksie jako osobne przed-

mioty, z osobnymi ocenami. Zmiana programu doprowa-

of the program also led to the change of the names of

sub jects, disturbing the established order. In view of the

situation, Professor Maluga proposed the name: a compo-

sitional and artistic block, merging in one grade drawing,

painting, sculpture and various compositional exercises.

However, the nal grade in the semester obtained by the

utrwalony porządek. Wobec zaistniałej sytuacji prof. Ma-

luga zaproponował nazwę: blok kompozycyjnoplastycz-

ny, zlewający w ocenie w jedno rysunek, malarstwo, rzeź-

bę oraz różne ćwiczenia kompozycyjne. Ocena końcowa

w semestrze, którą uzyskuje student, jest średnią z różnych

jednak umiejętności. Program bloku wzbogacony został

o cykl ćwiczeń kompozycyjnych, kosztem niestety stu-

diów z natury, które ograniczono do minimum. Te zabiegi

pozwoliły zachować przynajmniej większość godzin prze 

znaczonych na kształcenie plastyczne. Krok, który pozwo

lił na istnienie wielu zagadnień plastycznych na roku III,

to propozycja szerokiego wachlarza przedmiotów wybie

ralnych, mających na celu pogłębienie konkretnych pro-

blemów plastycznych ujętych w dwie grupy przedmiotów:

semestr piąty – zagadnienia autonomiczne plastycznie,

np. studium aktu, akwarela, graka komputerowa, lite 

ra–znak–logotyp–pismo, techniki wizualne w rysunku

architektonicznym; semestr szósty – problematyka wspie 

rająca projektowanie, np. projekt witraża, plastyczne

wspo maganie projektowania, teoria barw i kolor w archi-

tekturze. Zespół zaproponował listę 35 przedmiotów wy-

bieralnych, które po balotażu przeprowadzonym wśród

studentów ograniczyły się do kilkunastu. I te zamieszczo-

no na liście przedmiotów wybieralnych, dostępnych dla

studentów III roku. Teoria koloru stała się też wybieralna,

a nie jak dotychczas obligatoryjna dla wszystkich studen-

tów WA PWr.

Modykacja programu nauczania przedmiotów pla-

stycznych miała na celu również udźwignięcie pew-

nych problemów przypisanych wcześniej projektowaniu

wstępnemu (stworzonemu przed laty przez prof. Ciecha-

nowskiego).

Zmiana formuły projektowania wstępnego spowodo

wała, zdaniem zespołu Zakładu Rysunku, Malarstwa

i Rzeź by, dziurę programową w procesie kształcenia

studentów. Zniknęły podstawowe problemy kompozy-

cyjne na rzecz wyranowanej lozoi projektowania,

z którą zderzał się student pierwszego semestru kilka

dni po przekroczeniu murów uczelni. Ten fakt wpłynął

istotnie na program bloku kompozycyjnoplastyczne-

go, rozszerzający podstawowe problemy kompozycyjne

wprowadzone do programu kształcenia plastycznego [9,

s. 13, 14]. Tak więc w tym momencie zakres problema-

tyki podejmowanej w procesie dydaktycznym istotnie się

zmienił i wzbogacił. Rdzeń nauczania – ćwiczenia oparte

na kontakcie z naturą uzupełniły problemy kompozycji

płaskiej, przestrzennej, budowania znaczeń, znaku, a na-

wet metafory (il. 5). Zakład podjął również problematykę

komputerowego projektowania gracznego, wspomaga-

nia projektowania architektury (przedmioty wybieralne).

Dodatkowym problemem, o którym już wspomniano,

komplikującym nauczanie przedmiotów plastycznych

było wprowadzenie systemu studiów dwustopniowych:

inżynierskich i magisterskich.

W opinii autora był to krok rozbijający spójny program

nauczania, wpływający również negatywnie na przedmio-

ty plastyczne.

W tym miejscu należy nieco bliżej opisać sposób funk-

cjonowania programu nauczania na pierwszych dwóch

latach studiów od 2007 r. do dziś. Autorzy programu przy 

jęli ideę „spirali”, czyli mówiąc obrazowo, zasadę rotacji

problemów. Stara dobra zasada funkcjonująca od początku

istnienia wydziału była fundamentem programu naucza-

nia przedmiotów plastycznych. Ćwiczenia wprowadzano,

stopniując poziom komplikacji elementów wchodzących

w skład zadania, które należało rozwiązać na danym etapie

was enriched with a series of compositional exercises, at

the expense of, unfortunately, studies of nature, which

were kept to a minimum. These procedures allowed to

keep at least most of the hours devoted to art education.

The step that allowed for the existence of many art is-

sues in year III is the proposal of a wide range of elective

subjects aimed at analyzing specic artistic problems in-

cluded in two groups of subjects: fth semester – autono-

mous issues, e.g. study of the act, watercolour, computer

graphics, letter–sign–logotype–writing, visual techniques

in architectural drawing, etc.; sixth semester – problems

supporting design, for example, stained glass design, ar-

tistic design support, theory of colours and colour in ar-

chitecture. The team proposed a list of 35 elective sub-

jects, which after the voting conducted among students

were limited to a dozen or so. And these were included

in the list of elective courses available to thirdyear stu-

dents. The theory of colours also became elective, and not

obligatory as it was so far for all the Faculty of Architec-

ture of Wrocław University of Science and Techno logy

students.

Modication of the curriculum of art subjects was also

intended to address some of the problems previously as-

signed to initial design (created years ago by Prof. Cie

chanowski).

The change of the initial design formula caused in the

eyes of the Department of Drawing, Painting and Sculp-

ture a program hole in the process of educating students.

Basic compositional problems disappeared in favour of

a sophisticated design philosophy, which the rst semes-

ter student had to deal with a few days after starting the

university education. This fact signicantly inuenced the

program of the compositional and artistic block, expand-

ing the basic compositional problems introduced to the

art education program [9, p. 13, 14]. Thus at this point the

scope of the problems taken up by the Department in the

didactic process signicantly changed and enriched. The

core of teaching – classes based on contact with nature

complemented the problems of at, spatial composition,

building of meanings, sign and even metaphor (Fig. 5).

The Department also took up the problems of computer

graphic design, supporting the design of architecture

(elective subjects). An additional problem, which has al-

ready been mentioned, complicating the teaching of art

subjects was the introduction of a twolevel system of

studies: engineering and master’s degree.

In the author’s opinion this step broke the coherent cur-

riculum, and it also had an adverse effect on the visual art

subjects.

At this point, the method of functioning of the cur-

riculum should be described in more detail during the

rst two years of studies from 2007 till today. The au-

thors of the program adopted the idea of a “spiral”, which

guratively speaking is the principle of problem rotation.

The old good rule, functioning from the beginning of

the faculty, was the foundation of the curriculum of art

subjects. Classes were introduced, increasing the level of

complexity of elements included in the task, which had

to be solved at a given stage of education. The time of

gów tematycznych umożliwiających studentom zetknię-

cie się z problemami i zjawiskami plastycznymi do tego

stopnia, że mogli je przyswoić i w miarę zainteresowań

rozwijać samodzielnie ich istotę. Osiem semestrów to nie

cztery. Zaryzykowano jednak inną metodę, zakładając, że

ważniejsze jest zapoznanie studenta z problemem niż jego

pełne opanowanie (z braku czasu). Przyjęto założenie, że

w takich warunkach przynajmniej część studentów będzie

drążyć problem samodzielnie. W związku z tym program

przewidywał cykliczne przeplatanie się problemów ry-

sunkowych, malarskich i rzeźbiarskich, a wśród nich stu-

dyjnych i kompozycyjnych. Nowy program nauczania,

uwzględniający wspomniane wyżej realia, prowadził do

przesunięcia wielu tematów do opracowania w ramach

zadań domowych. I tak znaczna część ćwiczeń kompozy-

cyjnych po omówieniu zadania i wyjaśnieniu wątpliwości

miała być realizowana w domu w oparciu o system kon-

sultacji. Tylko w ten sposób można

obecnie zapewnić rów-

nowagę między studiami z natury a ćwiczeniami kompozy-

cyjnymi. Obowiązujący prowadzących system konsultacji

umożliwia takie działanie. Ograniczony czas zajęć wpłynął

również na zmiany

w ćwi czeniach studyjnych: martwa na-

tura, postać, plener. Trudno w takim czasie (2 godziny 15

minut) przeprowadzić studium bardziej skomplikowanego

układu lub zrealizować

dogłębne studium kolorystyczne,

nie mówiąc o wyjściu w plener w nieco bardziej odległe

miejsca np. Ostrów Tum ski, Ogród Botaniczny, Uniwersy-

tet Wrocławski. Ple nery

te są osiągalne tylko w czasie let-

nich obowiązkowych praktyk rysunkowych, które z kolei

trwają bardzo krótko – 5 dni (il. 6).

classes allowed for the use of certain thematic sequences

enabling students to come across problems and artistic

phenomena to the extent that they could learn them and,

according to their interests, independently develop their

essence. Eight semesters are not four. However, another

method was taken, assuming that it is more important

to familiarize the student with the problem than master-

ing it fully (due to lack of time). It was assumed that in

such conditions at least some of the students will probe

into the problem on their own. Therefore, the program

provided for periodic interweaving of drawing, painting

and sculptural problems, including studio and composi-

tion ones. The new curriculum, taking into account the

abovementioned realities, led to the shift of many top-

ics to be developed as part of homework. And so a sig-

nicant part of the composition exercises after discussing

the task and explaining the doubts was to be carried out

at home based on the consultation system. Only in this

way is it possible to ensure a balance between studies

from nature and compositional exercises. The consulta-

tion system that the teachers are obliged to use allows

this action. The limited time of classes also inuenced

changes in the studio exercises: still life, gure, open air.

During that time (2 hours 15 minutes) it is difcult to

con duct a study of a more complicated arrangement or

to carry out an indepth study of colour, let alone going

outdoors to somewhat more distant places, e.g. Ostrów

Tumski, the Botanical Garden, University of Wrocław.

These open air classes are only available during sum-

mer obligatory drawing practices, which in turn last very

short – 5 days (Fig. 6).

Okres funkcjonowania tego programu w latach 2007–

2017 pozwolił na zgromadzenie uwag i wniosków do-

tyczących skuteczności działań; zauważenie zalet i wad

tego programu.

Zebrane doświadczenia z pracy studentów w tych la-

tach można ująć w kilku punktach. Pierwsza uwaga ogól-

na dotyczy wiedzy studentów o sztuce. Okazuje się, że

w epoce Internetu i łatwego dostępu do galerii czy muze-

ów, przy zalewie albumów o sztuce większość studentów

nie ma elementarnej wiedzy faktogracznej, problemo-

wej. Duży odsetek z nich nigdy nie odwiedził Muzeum

Narodowego, lepiej jest, jeśli chodzi o Muzeum Archi-

tektury. Utrudnia to kontakt z nimi oraz prowadzenie ko-

rekt, kiedy bardzo często odnoszenie się prowadzącego do

określonych zjawisk w sztuce ułatwia realizację progra-

mu zajęć i tłumaczenie niektórych problemów w szeroko

pojętej twórczości. Nie chodzi tu o rozbudowaną wiedzę

encyklopedyczną, a o znajomość podstawowych faktów

i kluczowych nazwisk artystów. Z kolei przy określonych

ćwiczeniach kompozycyjnych natychmiastowy dostęp do

Internetu wypacza samodzielność pracy studentów. W opi-

nii autora prowadzący w czasie zajęć musi znaleźć sposób

na zachęcenie podopiecznych do uzupełnienia tych bra-

ków i do uczciwości względem siebie w generowaniu i re-

alizacji pomysłów. Autor uważa, że zarysowany problem

nie może pozostawać poza horyzontem zadań realizowa-

nych przez Zakład Rysunku, Malarstwa i Rzeźby, mimo

że nie jest zapisany w programie. Kolejnym zjawiskiem

jest przybierający na sile proces uzależnienia młodego po-

kolenia od komputera. Skutkuje to osłabionymi relacjami

bezpośrednimi z naturą. Odciążeni są również od ćwiczeń

i procesów, których odczytanie i interpretacja wymagają

wyobraźni przestrzennej i kształcenia takowej, wreszcie

The period of operation of this program in the years

2007–2017 allowed to gather comments and conclusions

regarding the effectiveness of activities as well as notic-

ing the advantages and disadvantages of this program.

The collected experience from the student work in

these years can be summarized in several points. The rst

general remark concerns the knowledge of students about

art. It turns out that in the era of the Internet and easy ac-

cess to galleries or museums, with the ood of art albums,

most students do not have elementary factual and prob-

lematic knowledge. A large percentage of them have nev-

er visited the National Museum, it is better when it comes

to the Museum of Architecture. This makes it difcult to

have real contact with them and to make corrections when

very often the teacher’s reference to specic phenomena

in art facilitates the implementation of the curriculum and

explaining certain problems in the broadly understood art.

This is not about extensive encyclopaedic knowledge, but

about knowledge of basic facts and key names of artists.

On the other hand, in certain compositional exercises,

immediate access to the Internet distorts students’ inde-

pendent work. In the author’s opinion, the teacher during

the class must nd a way to encourage the students to ll

these gaps and to be honest with each other in generat-

ing and implementing ideas. The author believes that the

problem outlined cannot be beyond the horizon of tasks

carried out by the Department of Drawing, Painting and

Sculpture, although it is not recorded in the program. An-

other phenomenon is the growing process of addiction

of the young generation to the computer. This results in

weakened direct relationships with nature. They are also

relieved of the exercises and processes, whose under-

standing and interpretation require spatial

imagination

zapisu przestrzeni w odręcznym rysunku. Między innymi

zniknęły w znacznym stopniu szkice koncepcyjne i per-

spektywiczne jako immanentny element procesu projek-

towania. Ten proces wskazuje na konieczność zaakcento-

wania tej problematyki w ćwiczeniach. Autor proponuje

pewną korektę lozoi realizowania zajęć – wprowadze-

nie większej liczby ćwiczeń rozwijających widzenie prze-

strzenne; zarówno rysunkowych, jak i malarskich.

Propozycja ta koresponduje z programami nauczania

na niektórych uczelniach wyróżniających się głębszym,

nie w prosty sposób utylitarnym podejściem do kształce-

nia, próbującym poruszać rudymentarne problemy odczu-

wania i interpretacji zjawisk przestrzennych, zapisu tych

zjawisk i wprowadzenia tych doświadczeń do procesu

projektowania. Przykładem takiego podejścia jest działal-

ność szkoły The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of

The Cooper Union, która od prawie czterdziestu lat uczy

i wpływa inspirująco na aspiracje architektów, by przy

użyciu różnych technik rysunkowych badali przestrzeń

w jej różnych aspektach. Język odręcznego rysunku, jed-

no z najbardziej fundamentalnych, lecz często ignoro-

wanych narzędzi badawczych dla architektów, pozwala

wydobyć potencjał wśród nawet niedoświadczonych stu-

dentów i pokazać im, jak w pełni obserwować i odczu-

wać świat wokół nas. Tak w wolnym tłumaczeniu można

przedstawić istotę nauczania realizowanego przez Sue

Ferguson Gussow zaproszoną przez Johna Heyduka do

prowadzenia tych zajęć w wyżej wymienionej szkole [10].

Opis zmian w nauczaniu plastycznym, w tym szczegól-

nie rysunku, ujawnia dwa procesy względem siebie prze-

ciwstawne: stopniowe skracanie programu zajęć plastycz-

nych z jednej strony i potrzebę wprowadzenia nowych

tematów ćwiczeń z drugiej. Jeszcze raz można porównać

czas przeznaczony na ten blok zajęć w 1946 r. ze stanem

obecnym (10 semestrów zajęć 3godzinnych wobec 4 se 

me strów zajęć 2 godz. 15 min + 2 semestry zajęć 1,5 godz.),

czyli 1946 – 450 godzin, 2007 – 182 godziny (tab. 1).

W tym miejscu przypomnieć należy trzy punkty wi-

dzenia na kształcenie plastyczne studentów architektury,

które nie wykluczają się wzajemnie, ale wyraźnie inaczej

rozkładają akcenty:

– „skrócony” kurs kształcenia plastycznego prowadzo-

nego na akademii sztuk pięknych – uniwersalia: uświa-

domienie podstawowych problemów plastycznych w per-

spektywie postrzegania przestrzenności, porządkowania

wrażeń i ich zapisu w formie często skończonego rysunku

lub obra zu, rozwijanie kultury kontaktu z naturą i sztuką,

łącznik między rysunkiem, malarstwem, rzeźbą a archi-

tekturą [11], [12],

– rola usługowa – kształcenie umiejętności zapisy-

wania idei projektowej, wykonywanie szkiców koncep-

cyjnych, doskonalenie warsztatu plastycznego służącego

przedstawieniu projektu inwestorowi, „sprzedania pro-

jektu” (perspektywa/wizualizacja). Jest to konsekwen-

cja nabycia podstawowych umiejętności warsztatowych

i świadomości plastycznej przez studentów,

– analiza przestrzeni i interpretacja jej różnych aspek-

tów, obserwacja, analiza i zapis przestrzeni w jej róż-

nych skalach, szczególnie pod kątem jej cech formalnych

i strukturalnych z uwzględnieniem różnych punktów

and education in this eld, and nally the space record

in free hand drawing. Among other things, conceptual

and perspective sketches have largely disappeared as an

immanent element of the design process. This process

indicates the need to emphasize this problem during the

classes. The author proposes a certain correction of the

philosophy of running the classes – introducing a greater

number of exercises developing spatial vision, both with

regard to drawing and painting.

This suggestion corresponds with the curricula at some

universities which are distinguished by a deeper, not sim-

ply utilitarian, approach to education, trying to address

the rudimentary problems of perceiving and interpreting

spatial phenomena, recording these phenomena and in-

troducing these experiences into the design process. An

example of such an approach is the activity of The Irwin

S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union,

which for almost forty years has taught and inuenced the

architects’ aspirations to explore space in its various as-

pects using various drawing techniques. The language of

free hand drawing, one of the most fundamental, but often

ignored research tools for architects, allows to develop po-

tential among even inexperienced students and show them

how to fully observe and feel the world around us. Thus,

in free

translation, one can present the essence of the teach-

ing carried out by Sue Ferguson Gussow invited by John

Heyduk to conduct these activities at the aforementioned

school [10].

The description of changes in the art teaching, espe-

cially drawing, reveals two opposite processes, i.e. a grad-

ual shortening of the art program on the one hand and

the need to introduce new topics of classes on the other.

Once again, the time allocated for this block of classes in

1946 can be compared with the current status (10 semes-

ters of 3hour classes versus 4 semesters of classes 2 hours

15 minutes + 2 semesters of classes 1.5 hours), i.e. 1946 –

450 hours, 2007 – 182 hours (Table 1).

What needs to be recalled at this point is the three

points of view on art education of students of architecture,

which are not mutually exclusive but clearly differentiate

the accents in the following way:

– „shortened” course of art education run at the Aca

demy of Fine Arts – universals: awareness of basic artistic

problems in the perspective of spatial perception, order-

ing impressions and their recording in the form of often

nished drawing or image, developing a culture of con-

tact with nature and art, link between drawing, painting,

sculpture and architecture [11], [12],

– service role – training in the ability to record the de-

sign idea, making conceptual sketches, improving the art

workshop for presenting the project to the investor, “sell-

ing the project” (perspective/visualization). It is a conse-

quence of the acquisition of basic skills in art and artistic

awareness by students,

– space analysis and interpretation of its various as-

pects, observation, analysis and recording of space at its

various scales, especially in terms of its formal and struc-

tural features, taking into account different points of view

and diverse environment; “Space” of man – the starting

point for other considerations [10].

Podsumowanie: 2018–? Tradycja a przyszłość

Szczegółowa analiza treści zajęć w ramach przedmio-

tów plastycznych (tab. 1) pozwala zauważyć ograniczenie

lub zanik pewnych grup tematów dydaktycznych wynika-

jące z redukcji godzin. W zmianach tych można dostrzec

obniżanie standardów kształcenia (m.in. mniejsze umie-

jętności warsztatowe, niższą świadomość roli rysunku

w zawodzie architekta, słabszą zdolność integrowania

problemów plastycznych w twórczości architektonicz-

nej). Propozycja poprawy tej sytuacji wiąże się z przy-

wróceniem określonych grup tematów w stosownym

wymiarze godzin dydaktycznych. Modykacja programu

polegać ma również na rozwinięciu wątku ćwiczeń ba-

dających różne aspekty przestrzenności człowieka, zwie-

rząt, struktur w naturze ożywionej, przestrzeni w różnej

skali, złożonej z elementów wytworzonych przez czło-

wieka, budujących zaskakujące wzajemne zależności.

Ćwiczenia te mają na celu nie tylko wykonanie „skoń-

czonej’’ pracy plastycznej, np. studium martwej natury.

Umiejętności wykonania takiej pracy, a co za tym idzie

świadomość budowy zamkniętego utworu plastycznego

o maksymalnie dużych walorach artystycznej ekspresji,

są niewątpliwie bardzo ważne, tym niemniej wydaje się,

że dowartościowanie procesu analizy formy za pomocą

rysunku czy szkicu kolorystycznego jest równie istotne,

wzmacniające świadomość różnych aspektów przestrzeni

będącej środowiskiem życia człowieka.

Istotną grupę ćwiczeń stanowiłyby zadania kompozy-

cyjne mające na celu kreowanie przestrzeni według okre-

ślonych założeń. Oczywiście, jak wynika z tabeli (tab.

1), w latach poprzednich pojawiały się takie tematy jak

szkielet człowieka, struktura maszyny. Były one jednak

wtopione w program, tak że nie wyciągano z tych ćwi-

czeń dalej idących wniosków. Były one realizowane rów-

nolegle z innymi tematami dzięki relatywnie dużej ilości

czasu poświęconego na zajęcia plastyczne. Należałoby

dążyć do tego, by w bardziej pogłębiony sposób podejść

do tych zagadnień. Autor proponuje, poprzez wybrane

ćwiczenia, uświadomienie studentom celowości formy

i logiki jej działania na bazie studiów szkieletu człowie-

ka i zwierząt, bliskich człowiekowi obiektów jak buty,

ubrania, opakowania, rower, parasol i innych struktur

trójwymiarowych. Rysunki analityczne budowy roślin,

kwiatów, owoców, nasion, drzew, struktur przestrzennych

budowanych przez zwierzęta i owady, „prymitywnych”

konstrukcji tworzonych przez człowieka, np. mosty li-

nowe, są dobrym materiałem do ćwiczeń projektowych.

Impresje projektowe z tym związane pozwolą wniknąć

w przestrzeń o różnej skali, różnej dynamice (obiekty

statyczne, ruchome), która otacza człowieka, przeni-

ka się nawzajem; […] 

Summary: 2018–? Tradition vs. future

A detailed analysis of the content of classes in the

scope of art subjects (Table 1) allows us to notice the

limitation or disappearance of certain groups of didactic

subjects resulting from the reduction of hours. In these

changes, we can notice a reduction in educational stand-

ards (including lower workshop skills, lower awareness

of the role of drawing in the architect’s profession, weak-

er ability to integrate artistic problems in architectural

creativity). The proposal to improve this situation is re-

lated to the restoration of specic groups of topics in the

relevant teaching hours. The modication of the program

also consists in developing a motif of exercises exploring

various aspects of human spatiality, animals, structures

in animate nature, space on a different scale, composed

of humanmade elements, building surprising mutual de-

pendencies.

These exercises are aimed at not only the performance

of “nite” artistic work, e.g. a study of still life. The abili-

ties to perform such a work, and thus the awareness of the

construction of a closed artistic work of maximum artis-

tic value, are undoubtedly very important, nevertheless it

seems that the appreciation of the process of form analy-

sis using a drawing or colour sketch is equally important,

reinforcing the awareness of different aspects of space

that is the environment of human life.

An important group of exercises would be composi-

tional tasks aimed at creating space according to specic

assumptions. Of course, as it can be seen from the table

(Table 1), in previous years such topics as human skel-

eton, machine structure appeared as well. However, they

were embedded in the program, so that no further conclu-

sions were drawn from these exercises. They were car-

ried out in parallel with other themes due to the relatively

large amount of time devoted to art classes. We should

strive to approach these issues in a more intricate way.

Through selected exercises, the author suggests making

students aware of the form and logic of its operation on

the basis of human and animal skeleton studies, objects

close to a human being like shoes, clothes, packaging,

bicycle, umbrella and other threedimensional structures.

Analytic drawings of plants, owers, fruits, seeds, trees,

spatial structures built by animals and insects, “primitive”

humanmade structures, e.g. rope bridges, constitute good

material for design exercises. Design impressions related

to this will allow students to penetrate into the space of

varying scales, different dynamics (static objects, moving

objects) that surrounds a human being, permeates each

other; [...]   

zakresie w działalności wielu architektów. Wspomnieć wy-

starczy Santiago Calatravę, budującego utwory architek-

toniczne w oparciu o analizę działania struktur mających

swoją genezę w szkieletach zwierząt, czy metaforyczne

rysunki Aldo Rossiego z częstymi motywami szkieletów

koni, psów, ryb itp. I nie chodzi o to, by w tym przypadku

analizować dogłębnie istotę tych rysunków. Ważne jest, by

ten problem pozostawał w polu zainteresowania naucza-

jących i studentów [14, s. 73, 123]. Innym ważnym zja-

wiskiem są gury niemożliwe – możliwe na płaszczyźnie,

niemożliwe do zaistnienia w realnej przestrzeni (między

przestrzenią a płaszczyzną, między złudzeniem a real-

nym otoczeniem). W odbiorze przestrzeni dla architek-

tów szczególnie istotny jest problem złudzeń. Odbiór tej

kreowanej przez człowieka oraz tej naturalnej przestrzeni

okazuje się nie całkiem oczywisty. Pewne zjawiska prze-

strzenne okazują się nie do odczytania jednoznacznie przez

zmysły człowieka. W tej perspektywie interesujące okazu-

ją się chociażby świadome, celowe zniekształcenia stoso-

wane w architekturze greckiej dla uzyskania pożądanego

efektu i np. eksperymenty opartu, badające niepewne rela-

cje oka z oglądanym obiektem. Świadomość tych zjawisk

powinna być powszechna w populacji każdego pokolenia

architektów. Faktem jest, że projektowanie takich subtelno-

ści przestrzennych, które można zauważyć w świątyniach

greckich, jest niemal niemożliwe w codzienności praktyki

architektonicznej. Tym niemniej może być punktem odnie-

sienia w praktyce projektowej setek architektów, z których

być może niektórzy będą w stanie w pełny sposób odnieść

się do problematyki przestrzennej tak, by wykreować nowe

zjawisko architektonicznoprzestrzenne o randze zbliżonej

do osiągnięć architektury antycznej [15].

Katalog ćwiczeń należałoby z namysłem opracować,

znajdując jednocześnie sposób na pomieszczenie rozsze-

rzającej się problematyki w ciasnym gorsecie czasu prze-

widzianym w obowiązującej obecnie siatce zajęć, mając

także nadzieję na zmiany strukturalne w programie na-

uczania studentów architektury sprzyjające kształtowaniu

osobowości studentów odczuwających głębiej i wnikli-

wiej przestrzeń w jej niezmierzonym bogactwie zarówno

jeśli chodzi o skalę, jak i materię, w której się przejawia.

Żeby tego dokonać, należy przywrócić świadomość rangi

rysunku, całości przedmiotów plastycznych w kształce-

niu kolejnych pokoleń architektów. Byłoby to możliwe

przy całościowej rewizji programu nauczania na WA PWr

w kontekście postępujących zmian kulturowych i techno-

logicznych w otaczającym nas świecie.

Opisana historia zmian programowych ukazuje jedno-

znacznie proces redukowania wymiaru godzin przezna-

czonych na kształcenie plastyczne. Zmniejszanie liczby

godzin wymusza skracanie i eliminowanie pewnych ele

mentów programu dydaktycznego. Można niektóre za-

dania dydaktyczne przerzucać na prace domowe. Ale

w przypadku nauki dyscyplin twórczych podstawą dydak

tyki są jednak relacje nauczyciel–uczeń (doświadczony

twórca–adept twórczości).

its genesis in animal skeletons, or metaphorical drawings

by Aldo Rossi with frequent motifs of horse, dog, sh

skeletons etc. And it is not about analyzing the essence of

these drawings in depth in this case. What it is important

is that this problem should remain in the eld of interest

of the educators and students [14, p. 73, 123]. Another im-

portant phenomenon is connected with impossible gures

– possible on the plane, impossible to exist in real space

(between space and plane, between illusion and real sur-

roundings). In the reception of space, the problem of illu-

sions is particularly important for architects. The reception

of the manmade space and the natural space turns out to

be not quite obvious. Certain spatial phenomena turn out

to be unreadable by the human senses without ambiguity.

In this perspective, as an example of interesting phenom-

ena we could mention conscious, deliberate distortions

used in Greek architecture to obtain the desired effect and,

for instance, opart experiments, investigating the uncer-

tain eye relationship with the object being viewed. Aware-

ness of these phenomena should be common in the popu-

lation of every generation of architects. The fact is that

the design of such spatial subtleties that can be seen in

Greek temples is almost impossible in the everyday archi-

tectural practice. Nevertheless, it can be a reference point

in the design practice of hundreds of architects, some of

whom may be able to fully refer to spatial issues in or-

der to create a new architectural and spatial phenomenon

similar to the achievements of ancient architecture [15].

The catalogue of exercises should be carefully thought

out, nding a way to accommodate the expanding issues

in the insufcient amount of time that is prescribed in

the current schedule of classes, also hoping for structural

changes in the curriculum of architecture students, con-

ducive to shaping the personality of students so that they

experience space deeper and deeper in its immeasurable

richness both in scale and the matter in which it is mani-

fested. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to restore

awareness of the importance of drawing, and the whole

of art subjects in the education of subsequent generations

of architects. It would be possible with a comprehensive

revision of the curriculum at the WA PWr in the context

of the ongoing cultural and technological changes in the

world around us.

The presented history of program curriculum changes

clearly shows the process of reducing the number of hours

devoted to art education. Decreasing the number of hours

forces shortening and eliminating some elements of the

didactic program. Some didactic tasks can be transferred to

be done as homework by students. But in the case of learn 

ing creative disciplines, the basis of didactics is, indeed,

teacher–student relations (experienced creator – adept of

creativity).

The use of enormous professional knowledge in de-

sign practice requires from the architect an efcient mind

characterized by creative potential, rich imagination, and

artistic sensitivity. These features are stimulated, devel-

oped and shaped in the series of classes in the composi-

tion and art block. Seeing space or understanding the form

most effectively (in accordance with previous experience)

Artykuł ukazuje zmiany roli i metod nauczania przedmiotów plastycznych na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Wrocławskiej podyktowanych

kilkukrotną modykacją programu kształcenia architektów. Proces zmian zawierał w sobie dwa przeciwstawne bieguny. Z jednej strony skracany był

czas przeznaczony na prowadzenie zajęć; z 450 godzin w 1946 r. do 182 godzin w 2007 r. Skutkowało to sukcesywnym zawężaniem problematyki

zajęć. Sytuację skomplikowały jeszcze dwa fakty: zmiana lozoi prowadzenia projektowania wstępnego oraz postępująca obecność komputera

w procesie projektowania zmieniająca istotnie zasady współpracy studenta z wykładowcami. Wiązało się to z rozszerzeniem problematyki kompo-

zycji w programie zajęć tak, że duża część tych ćwiczeń realizowana była w trybie konsultacji z wykonaniem w domu. Zauważono również rosnący

brak umiejętności zapisu przestrzeni przez studentów za pomocą rysunku odręcznego. Tak więc przy coraz krótszym programie zajęć pojawiła się

jednocześnie potrzeba wprowadzenia nowych wątków do edukacji plastycznej. Autor proponuje zwiększenie liczby ćwiczeń służących badaniu

i kreowaniu przestrzeni w różnej skali i różnych aspektach, tak by wydobyć potencjał studentów i pokazać im, jak w pełni obserwować i odczuwać

świat wokół nas, dając im jednocześnie narzędzia do jej zmiany. Byłoby to możliwe przy całościowej rewizji programu kształcenia architektów na

Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Wrocławskiej.

Abstract

The article discusses changes in the role and methods of teaching art subjects at the Faculty of Architecture of Wrocław University of Science and

Technology caused by several modications of the architects’ education program. The change process contained two opposing poles. On the one hand,

the time devoted to conducting classes was shortened; from 450 hours in 1946 to 182 hours in 2007. It was connected with the successive narrowing of

the problem issues of classes. This situation was complicated by two more facts: a change in the philosophy of initial design classes and the progressive

presence of the computer in the design process, signicantly changing the principles of cooperation between students and lecturers. It was connected

with the extension of the issues of composition in the curriculum so that a large part of these exercises was carried out in the consultation mode with

assigning the work to be done by students as homework. Another problem that was also noticed was the growing lack of ability to record space by stu-

dents by means of freehand drawing. Thus, with the evershorter curriculum, there was also a need to introduce new aspects to art education. The author

suggests increasing the number of exercises/classes to explore and create space on various scales and in different aspects, so as to develop the potential

of students and show them how to fully observe and experience the world around us, at the same time giving them the tools to change it. It would be

possible with a comprehensive revision of the architects’ curriculum at the Faculty of Architecture of Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

Wykorzystanie olbrzymiej wiedzy zawodowej w prak-

tyce projektowej wymaga od architekta sprawnego umy-

słu cechującego się potencjałem twórczym, bogatą

wyobraźnią, wrażliwością plastyczną. Te cechy są po-

budzane, rozwijane i kształtowane w cyklu zajęć bloku

kompozycyjnoplastycznego. Widzenia przestrzeni czy

rozumienia formy najskuteczniej można (zgodnie z do-

tychczasowym doświadczeniem) nauczać poprzez ćwi-

czenia rysunkowe, malarskie i rzeźbiarskie.

Jeżeli zależy nam na formowaniu twórczej osobowości

przyszłego architekta, to powinniśmy zadbać o możliwe

szerokie przygotowanie bazy intelektualnoartystycznej

gwarantującej umiejętność kreatywnego radzenia sobie

studentów na kolejnych etapach kształcenia akademickie-

go oraz w praktyce zawodowej.

If we want to form a creative personality of a future

architect, then we should take care of the possible broad

preparation of the intellectual and artistic base that guar-

antees the ability of creative coping by students at subse-

quent stages of academic education and in professional

practice.
