Abstract

One of the major contemporary challenges architects need to face, is to design structures which combine comfort of use with maximal energy efficiency. This results from high demands regarding thermal insulation of construction partitions, described in building regulations which came into force in 1.01.2014. The ECOtwist house project attempts to become the optimal future construction in terms of energy consumption and economy. The article provides a description of an energy efficient single-family house concept called ECOtwist, developed as a result of cooperation between a group of students and a couple – hypothetical future investors and users of the house. Keeping in mind the idea of sustainable development concerning architecture, strong relations between the site and the building have been developed, distinguishing functional zones inside as well as outside. The selection of structural system, building materials and energy saving solutions was determined to obtain the lowest possible useful energy value. Simultaneously, at every stage of the design process these decisions were confronted with the building’s functionality and aesthetics.

Introduction

The single-family house ECOtwist was designed as

part of a university course entitled “Ecological Buildings

– design problems”

. Its main purpose was to work out

a concept of a building according to the idea of sustain-

able development constituting a solution to the problem

of degradation of the environment by the construction

industry as well as to meet the requirements of a demand

for usable energy defined in the programme of National

Environment Protection and Water Management Fund

(Polish acronym: NFOŚiGW). As a result, a comfortable

and functional place of residence was designed which

respects the existing ecosystem and thanks to the em -

ployed solutions satisfies the NF40

standard.

This concept (Fig. 1) was created thanks to cooperation

with Grażyna and Darek – a couple who agreed to play

the role of potential investors and actively participate in

the entire design process. All their demands were met as

Wprowadzenie

Projekt domu jednorodzinnego EKOskręt powstał

w ra mach kursu studialnego „Budynki ekologiczne – pro-

blemy projektowe”

. Głównym celem było opracowa-

nie koncepcji budynku zgodnie z ideą zrównoważone-

go rozwoju, będącą rozwiązaniem problemu degradacji

śro dowiska naturalnego przez branżę budowlaną, oraz

spełnienie wymagań zapotrzebowania na energię użyt-

kową określonych w programie Narodowego Funduszu

Ochrony Środowiska i Gospodarki Wodnej (NFOŚiGW).

W efekcie zaprojektowano komfortowe i funkcjonalne

miejsce do mieszkania, które respektuje istniejący eko-

system oraz dzięki zastosowanym rozwiązaniom energo-

oszczędnym osiąga standard NF40

Koncepcja (il. 1) powstała w wyniku współpracy z Gra-

żyną i Darkiem – parą, która zgodziła się wystąpić w roli

regards financial outlay within the investment

of using the building as well as its dynamic form and

aesthetics. Moreover, we managed to convince them

about high values of the ecological technological solu-

tions and usage of local raw materials when erecting the

building. As a consequence, the achieved design is an

attempt at a model of a “home of the future” that is ener-

gy-efficient and cost-effective and at the same time com-

fortable and easy to use.

The building was put up on a plot of land situated in

Karola Olszewskiego Street No 145 in Wrocław. Its form

blends in with the surrounding development by filling

a gap in the existing city tissue. It is a two-storey structure

– on the ground floor there is a living area along with

a guest room and technical facilities whereas on the first

floor there are bedrooms, a laundry and a bathroom.

Shape of the building

and its relation with the surroundings

The site of the design is located in an area that is not

part of a local zoning plan, which provided much freedom

as regards the shape and location of the building. It was

placed in a line of development suggested by the frontal

elevations of the buildings on the neighbouring plots of

land (Fig. 2) and situated in a peak system towards the

street. The roof ridge was made parallel to the eastern and

western edges of the site which gave the building an

original and dynamic character. The entrance area was

planned in the north, opposite to the living area, which

made it possible to isolate this part from the street noise

and to use sunlight in an optimal way. Large glazing on

the southern side can generate thermal energy profits

from sun beams exceeding its losses and influencing

favourably the energetic balance of the building. Simul-

taneously, it is possible to prevent the building from ex -

cessive overheating of the interior in the summer periods

through using regulated anti-solar covers in window

się ich przeko nać do ekologicznych rozwiązań techno-

logicznych oraz uży cia lokalnych surowców przy budo-

wie obiektu. W rezulta cie powstał projekt zmierzający do

modelu „domu przysz łości”, który jest energooszczędny

i opłacalny pod względem eksploatacji, a przy tym wy-

godny i pros ty w użytkowaniu.

Budynek zaprojektowany został na działce budowlanej

przy ulicy Karola Olszewskiego 145 we Wrocławiu. For-

mą wpasowuje się w otaczającą zabudowę, uzupełniając

lukę w tkance miejskiej. Ma dwie kondygnacje – w przy-

ziemiu znajduje się część dzienna wraz z pokojem go-

ścinnym oraz pomieszczeniami technicznymi, natomiast

na pierwszym piętrze usytuowano część sypialną, pralnię

oraz łazienkę.

Kształt budynku i jego relacja z otoczeniem

Działka projektowa leży na obszarze nieobjętym miej -

scowym planem zagospodarowania przestrzennego, co po-

zwoliło na dużą dowolność w zakresie kształtu i usytuo -

wania budynku. Projektowany obiekt został umieszczony

w linii zabudowy zasugerowanej przez frontowe elewa-

cje budynków na sąsiednich działkach (il. 2) oraz usta-

wiony w układzie szczytowym względem ulicy. Kalenica

natomiast poprowadzona została równolegle do wschod-

niej i za chodniej krawędzi działki, co nadało bryle budyn-

ku oryginalny i dynamiczny charakter. Strefę wejś ciową

domu zaplanowano od północy, przeciwnie do częś ci dzien-

nej, co pozwala na odizolowanie się od hałasu ulicy oraz

optymalne wykorzystanie nasłonecznienia. Duże prze-

szklenia od strony południowej mogą generować zys ki

energii cieplnej od promieni słonecznych, przewyższając

jej straty i wpływając korzystnie na bilans ener getyczny

openings, i.e. wooden blinds and façade roller shutters.

Due to their placement on the outside, heated up covers

do not transmit the heat into the house interior. The pur-

pose of the designers was to achieve a compact shape of

the building in order to limit heat losses through exterior

partitions as well as to reduce the construction costs.

Heating and ventilation appliances were planned in its

central part, which enables efficient usage of the installa-

tions [1].

There are plans to connect the designed building to the

electrical grid, water supply network and sanitary sewer

running along Karola Olszewskiego Street where the site

is located.

The way the designed building is located divides its

whole layout into two parts, each one with different func-

tions. The entrance zone along with the driveway was

situated in the north, whereas the southern part houses

a recrea tion and cultivation area which comprises a ter-

race by a shallow garden pond, a children’s playground as

well as a ve getable garden. The land development project

assumes maximum preservation of the existing plants and

complementing them with new plants. Hardened surfaces

were limited to a minimum in order to maintain the pos-

sibly largest biologically active area. In accordance with

the rule of natural compensation

, a part of the site was

left as a backwoods area where free development of fauna

and flora without human interference was ensured. There

is an openwork fence without a brick wall base so that

small animals could move without obstacles. A high

greenery system also provides ventilation of the area of

the design. There are also special places for flower beds

nadmiernemu przegrzewaniu się wnętrza domu w okresie

letnim poprzez zastosowanie na otworach okiennych re-

gulowanych osłon przeciwsłonecznych – żaluzji drewnia-

nych oraz rolet fasadowych. Dzięki umieszczeniu ich od

zewnętrznej strony, nagrzane osłony nie przekazują ciepła

do wnętrza domu. Dążono do uzyskania zwartego i kom-

paktowego kształtu budynku w celu ograniczenia strat

ciepła przez przegrody zewnętrzne oraz do zredukowania

kosztów budowy. Urządzenia związane z ogrzewaniem

i wentylacją zaplanowano w jego centralnej części, co po-

zwala na efektywne wykorzystanie instalacji [1].

Planuje się podłączenie projektowanego budynku do

sie ci energetycznej, wodnej i kanalizacyjnej biegnących

wzdłuż przylegającej do działki ulicy Karola Olszew-

skiego.

Sposób usytuowania projektowanego budynku dzieli

i uzupełnienie jej roślinnością nowo nasadzaną. Tereny

utwardzone zostały ograniczone do niezbędnego mini-

mum w celu zachowania jak największej powierzch ni

tecznikową, zapewniającą swobodny rozwój fauny i ﬂ ory

bez ingerencji człowieka. Zaprojektowane ogrodzenie jest

ażurowe, bez podmurówek, w celu zapewnienia swobod-

nej wędrówki mniejszych zwierząt. Układ zieleni wyso-

kiej na terenie objętym opracowaniem zapewnia swobod-

ne przewietrzanie obszaru. Wydzielono także miejsca na

rabaty kwiatowe wzdłuż ogrodzenia oraz strefy pod upra-

wę warzyw w specjalnych donicach.

Gospodarka odpadami

Projektowany dom przystosowano do kilkuetapowej

segregacji codziennych odpadów. Pierwsza selekcja mia-

łaby miejsce w kuchni, gdzie zaplanowano umieszczenie

trzech pojemników na surowce przetwarzalne oraz jedne-

go na odpady organiczne. Drugie, pośrednie miejsce skła-

dowania to pomieszczenie techniczne, gdzie znajdowały-

by się zbiorniki o pojemności 100 l każdy. Ostatni etap

stanowiłyby pojemniki tuż przy granicy działki opróż-

niane przez miejskie przedsiębiorstwo oczyszczania. Dla

odpadów organicznych zaprojektowano kompostownik

zlokalizowany w ogrodzie tuż przy streﬁ e mateczniko-

wej, składający się z trzech pojemników o objętości 1 m

W każdym z nich zachodziłby inny etap procesu kompo-

stowania: pierwszy pojemnik służy do napełniania, w dru-

gim zachodzą procesy fermentacji, a trzeci opróżnia się

w celu wykorzystania powstałej w nim materii do nawo-

żenia ogrodu.

Konstrukcja

Dom zaprojektowany został w konstrukcji drewnia-

nej lekkiej szkieletowej. Elementami nośnymi ścian ze-

wnętrznych, stropu międzykondygnacyjnego oraz dachu

są prefabrykowane dwuteowe belki drewniane o wyso-

kich parametrach nośności i dużych możliwych rozpię-

tościach. Ze względu na niską bezwładność cieplną, jaką

charakteryzuje się konstrukcja drewniana szkieletowa,

niemal w centralnej osi budynku zaplanowano masywną

ścianę nośną wykonaną z cegły pełnej, która wraz z po-

dłogą na gruncie stanowiłaby element akumulujący cie-

pło w budynku. Gromadzona energia pochodziłaby z pro-

mieniowania słonecznego wpadającego przez południowe

przeszklenia jadalni i salonu oraz okna w południowo-za-

chodniej połaci dachu.

Poprzez staranne wykonanie konstrukcji szkieletowej

i wypełnienie jej odpowiednią grubością izolacji termicz-

nej planuje się stworzyć budynek o dużej szczelności i mi-

nimalnych stratach ciepła. Materiały izolacyjne zastoso-

wane w ścianach zewnętrznych, podłodze na gruncie oraz

dachu zostały dobrane w taki sposób, aby ich współczynniki

przenikania ciepła spełniały standard energooszczędnoś -

ci NF15. Podporządkowany standardowi został również

dobór stolarki okiennej i drzwiowej. Zarówno konstruk-

cyjne elementy drewniane, jak i izolacja termiczna odpo-

wiadają wymogom odnośnie do odporności pożarowej.

Sposób wykonania przegród zewnętrznych oraz połą-

czeń pomiędzy nimi został przedstawiony na ilustracji 3.

Konstrukcja drewniana szkieletowa sama w sobie nie

zapewnia odpowiedniego komfortu akustycznego w bu-

Waste management

The designed house was adapted to a multi-stage seg-

regation of everyday wastes. The first segregation would

take place in the kitchen where three containers for recy-

clable materials and one container for organic wastes are

placed. Another place of storage is a technical room with

a number of containers 100 litre each. The last stage

involves containers placed just by the edge of the site

which are emptied by a city waste collection company.

For collecting organic wastes there is a composter located

in the garden just near the backwoods zone consisting of

three containers 1 m

each. In each of those containers

a different stage of the composting process would take

place, namely the first container is used for filling, in the

second one fermentation processes take place while the

third one is emptied and its contents are used for fertiliz-

ing the garden.

Structure

The house was designed as a wooden light-frame

struc ture. Bearing elements of the exterior walls, the

inter-storey ceiling and the roof are prefabricated H-beam

wooden beams with high bearing capacity parameters and

wide possible spans. Due to low thermal inertia which

is characteristic of a wooden light-frame structure, almost

in the central axis of the building a massive full brick

bearing wall was designed which along with the floor on

the ground would constitute an element accumulating

heat in the building. The stored energy would originate

from solar radiation coming to the dining room and living

room through their southern glazing and windows in the

south-west roof slope.

Thanks to diligent finishing of the frame structure and

using appropriate thickness thermal insulation in it, the

house is planned as a building of high leak proof perfor-

mance and minimal losses of heat. Insulation materials,

which were used in the exterior walls, the floor on the

ground and the roof, were selected so as their heat transfer

coefficients meet energy-efficiency standard NF15. The

choice of window and door frames was also subjected to

a standard. Both wooden constructional elements and

thermal insulation meet the requirements of fire resis-

tance. Figure 3 presents a method of performance of

exterior partitions and connections between them.

A wooden frame structure by itself does not provide

proper acoustic comfort in the building, therefore it is

necessary to use additional measures improving this

parameter. Apart from the proposed wooden ceiling,

which due to its low deadweight is characterised by poor

acoustic insulation against impact noise [4], special mine-

ral wool was selected to fill spaces between joists and

moreover, a floating floor was designed. In order to

reduce the impact of exterior noise, both in the walls as

well as in the roof structure an increased amount of

thermal insulation was taken into account. The wooden

window and door frames of a high insulation parameter

against air noises additionally complement a good acous-

tic effect.

Thanks to a low deadweight of the suggested structure

and a dominant “dry” assembly method, the costs of con-

struction would be lowered. Foundations laid under

a light-frame structure are proportionally smaller than

those laid under massive walls [5]. Additionally, by re -

ducing wet works the number of technological breaks is

lowered and as a consequence the overall time of erecting

the building is shorter. Moreover, it is assumed that in

order to reduce the transport costs and to support the local

economy, non-bearing wooden elements shall be obtained

from a local sawmill near Wrocław.

A light-frame wooden structure which is made of natu-

ral wood may survive in good condition for even 150 years

[6], thus the designed house could become a home for

many generations. Moreover, a wooden building creates

a healthy microclimate and friendly atmosphere in its

interior.

Installations

In order to provide temperature comfort inside the

designed building, a system of mechanical intake-outlet

ventilation with heat recovery was planned. The supplied

air would be heated or cooled according to users’ needs.

The air inlet terminal was designed on the northern wall

of the building, while the outlet terminal is situated on the

roof so that the coolest air could be collected from the

surroundings in summer periods.

The applied installation along with a cross-flow heat

exchanger allows for controlling the air flow in the whole

house (Fig. 4), thus excluding the possibility of mixing

the removed air with the fresh air – only heat is trans-

ferred. As a consequence, kitchen smells, bathroom mois-

ture and allergens do not return to the interior. Thanks to

zarówno w konstrukcji ścian, jak i dachu uwzględniono

zwiększoną ilość izolacji termicznej. Dobry efekt aku-

styczny dopełnia stolarka okienna i drzwiowa o wysokim

parametrze izolacyjności od dźwięków powietrznych.

Ze względu na niski ciężar własny proponowanej kon-

strukcji i dominujący „suchy” sposób montażu obniże-

niu uległyby koszty budowy. Fundamenty wykonane pod

konstrukcją lekką są bowiem proporcjonalnie mniejsze

od tych pod ścianami masywnymi [5]. Redukcja robót

mokrych natomiast zmniejsza liczbę przerw technolo-

gicznych, a w konsekwencji skraca ogólny czas wznosze-

nia budynku. Ponadto, aby zmniejszyć koszty transportu

i wesprzeć lokalną gospodarkę, zakłada się, że nienośne

elementy drewniane zostaną pozyskane z lokalnego tarta-

ku pod Wrocławiem.

Konstrukcja lekka szkieletowa wykonana z natural-

nego drewna może przetrwać w dobrej kondycji nawet

150 lat [6], a zatem projektowany dom będzie mógł się

stać domem wielopokoleniowym. Budynek drewniany

two rzy ponadto zdrowy mikroklimat i przyjazną atmosfe-

rę w swoim wnętrzu.

Instalacje

W celu zapewnienia komfortu temperaturowego we-

wnątrz projektowanego domu zaplanowano system wen-

tylacji mechanicznej nawiewno-wywiewnej z odzyskiem

ciepła. Nawiewane powietrze byłoby ogrzewane lub chło-

dzone zgodnie z potrzebami użytkowników. Aby móc

w okresie letnim pobierać z otoczenia jak najchłodniej-

sze powietrze, czerpnię zaplanowano na północnej ścianie

budynku, natomiast wyrzutnię na jego dachu.

Zastosowana instalacja z wymiennikiem krzyżowym

pozwala kontrolować przepływ strumienia powietrza

w całym domu (il. 4), wykluczając przy tym możliwość

mieszania się tego usuwanego ze świeżym – transferowi

ulega jedynie ciepło. W konsekwencji do wnętrza nie do-

stają się z powrotem zapachy z kuchni, wilgoć z łazienek

i alergeny. Dzięki rekuperatorowi możliwe jest odzyska-

nie 68% ciepła

, jakie byłoby usuwane z domu przy sys-

temie wentylacji bez odzysku. W ten sposób straty ciepła

zostają znacznie zredukowane, co wpływa na obniżenie

rachunków za ogrzewanie.

Hałas produkowany przez centralę wentylacyjną do -

bie gający z kanałów rozprowadzających powietrze może

osiągnąć poziom 36 dB

. W celu minimalizacji odczucia

dyskomfortu przewidziano miejsce centrali w pomiesz-

czeniu gospodarczym oraz dodatkowo ją zaizolowano.

Pomijając ciepło odzyskane dzięki rekuperacji, na og-

rze wanie pomieszczeń zużywa się około 78% całkowi-

tej energii potrzebnej do funkcjonowania domu [7], dlate-

go dobrany system grzewczy w projekcie EKOskręt miał

duży wpływ na jego końcową efektywność energetyczną.

recovery ventilation system. In this way the heat losses

are significantly reduced, which contributes to lowering

the costs for heating reflected in bills.

The noise that is produced by the ventilation control pa -

nel coming from the ducts which distribute air may achieve

the level of 36 dB

. For the purpose of minimising the feel-

ing of discomfort, the ventilation control panel was situated

in the utility room and it was additionally insulated.

Apart from the recovered heat from recuperation, circa

78% of total energy that is necessary for the house to

function is used [7], therefore the selected heating system

in the ECOtwist design had a big influence on its final

energetic efficiency.

The selected design site is not connected to the dis trict

heating system, that is why in order to provide appro-

priate heat comfort an air/water type heat pump was in -

stalled (Fig. 5). Thermal energy collected from the out-

side of the building would be changed to the heat that is

needed for heating rooms by means of electric ener gy and

then it would be distributed by surface heating in -

stallations. In order to prepare warm usable water, the

heat from the pump would go to a 500 l reservoir from

which water would be distributed to sanitary facilities in

the house.

While functioning, the pump would use to a large

extent the energy from a renewable source in the form of

air. Consequently, the costs of its usage as well as a de -

structive influence on the environment will be signifi-

cantly reduced in comparison with gas or electric heating.

As opposed to pumps with ground heat exchangers, an

air/water pump requires neither expensive installations

nor an appropriate site area and its assembly is simpler as

well as cheaper [8].

The selected heat pump works most efficiently in low

temperature heating systems, therefore in the ECOtwist

design the underfloor and wall heating installations were

applied [9]. According to the design, in wet rooms the

heating elements are located under the floor surface in the

raw concrete layer. This would ensure faster drying of the

surface, a uniform temperature distribution and heat com-

fort in the places where people often stay barefooted (e.g.

in the bathroom). In order to achieve the greatest effi-

ciency of this system, the floor heating surface was situa-

ted in places free from fixed unmoved elements of house-

hold equipment. In the remaining rooms a wall heating

system was used, including slanted walls in bedrooms in

the attic. Heating elements located in the layer of plaster

would provide an even and comfortable distribution of

temperatures in rooms at the same time eliminating the

impression of “cold walls”. This would influence interior

design. Standing items of furniture could be freely re -

arranged, while maintaining at least a 5 cm distance from

the wall with an installation. Unfortunately, possibilities

of mounting wall items such as pictures and shelves

would be limited [10]. By co-operating with the floor

heating, both systems would cover the entire demand for

heat in the house.

The way of functioning of the building in summer and

winter at different times of the day is presented in Fi -

gure 6.

Do swojej pracy pompa wykorzystywałaby w dużym

stopniu energię z odnawialnego źródła pod postacią po-

wietrza. Dzięki temu koszty jej użytkowania oraz szkod li -

wy wpływ na środowisko zostaną znacznie zredu kowane

w porównaniu z ogrzewaniem gazowym czy elektrycz-

nym. W przeciwieństwie do pomp z wymiennikami grun-

towymi pompa powietrze/woda nie wymaga kosztownych

instalacji ani odpowiedniej powierzchni działki, jej mon-

taż jest prostszy i tańszy [8].

Dobrana pompa ciepła jest najbardziej efektywna w nis -

kotemperaturowych systemach grzewczych, dlatego w pro-

jekcie EKOskręt zastosowano instalację ogrzewania pod-

łogowego i ściennego [9]. W pomieszczeniach wilgotnych

zaplanowano elementy grzejne pod powierzchnią podłogi

w warstwie wylewki betonowej. Zapewnia łoby to szybsze

osuszanie powierzchni, równomierny rozkład temperatury

oraz komfort cieplny w miejscach, gdzie często przebywa

się na boso (np. łazienka). W celu uzyskania jak najwięk-

szej efektywności takiego systemu powierzchnię grzew-

czą podłogi założono w miejs cach wolnych od nieprze-

suwnych, stałych elementów wypo sażenia. W pozostałych

pomieszczeniach zastosowano ogrzewanie ścien ne, także

na skośnych ścianach poddasza w sypialniach. Elemen-

ty grzejne w warstwie tynku zapewnia łyby równomier-

ny i komfortowy rozkład temperatur w pomiesz czeniach,

a tak że eliminowałyby wrażenie „zimnych ścian”. Mia-

łoby to wpływ na aranżację wnętrza. Meb le stojące mo-

głyby być dowolnie przestawiane z zachowaniem przy-

najmniej 5 cm odległości od ściany z instalacją. Niestety

ogra niczone byłyby możliwoś ci montowania elementów

ściennych, takich jak obrazy i półki [10]. Wspó

łpracując

z og rzewaniem podłogowym, oba systemy pokrywałyby

w całości zapotrzebowanie na ciepło dla domu.

Sposób działania budynku latem oraz zimą o różnych

porach dnia przedstawiono na ilustracji 6.

Gospodarka wodna zarówno wewnątrz, jak i na ze-

wnątrz budynku stanowi istotny aspekt zrównoważone-

go projektowania. W projekcie EKOskręt zaplanowana

została w taki sposób, aby umożliwić minimalne zużycie

wody przy maksymalnym jej wykorzystaniu. W tym celu

zastosowano systemy odzysku wody szarej oraz wody

deszczowej (il. 7).

Pielęgnacja terenów zielonych w otoczeniu domu

wią z a łaby się ze zużyciem dużych ilości wody, dlatego

aby zmniejszyć koszty, do podlewania projektowa nego

og rodu wykorzystywana byłaby głównie deszczówka.

Na terenie działki zaplanowano zbiornik o pojem ności

5200 l, w którym magazynowana byłaby woda z rynien

dachowych. W okresach szczytowych (np. po przejściu

deszczów nawalnych) nadmiar wody rozsączałby się

w gruncie za pomocą skrzynek chłonnych, a w przypadku

niedo boru istniałaby możliwość korzystania z wodocią-

Water management both inside as well as outside the

building constitutes a crucial aspect of sustainable design-

ing. In the ECOtwist design this was planned so that

a minimum consumption of water is possible at its maxi-

mum usage. For this purpose systems of grey water and

rain water recovery were applied (Fig. 7)

Taking care of green areas in the vicinity of the house

would be connected with high water consumption,

therefore in order to reduce costs the designed garden

would be irrigated mainly by rain water. A 5200 litre

contai ner for storing water from roof rain gutters is to be

situated in the area of the site. In peak periods (e.g. after

heavy rains) the excess of water would soak into the

ground by means of soakaways and in the case of water

shortage there would be a possibility to use water supply

systems. Thanks to this method, it is possible to increase

the rain water gain by 25%, which totally constitutes

circa 60% of the total demand for garden irrigation

water (Table 1).

gów. Dzięki zastosowanemu systemowi można zwiększyć

uzysk deszczówki o niemal 25%, co łącznie stanowi oko-

ło 60% całkowitego zapotrzebowania na wodę do pod-

lewania ogrodu (tab. 1).

Woda szara pochodząca z budynku, powstała po my-

ciu rąk i kąpieli, poddawana byłaby odzyskowi oraz

oczyszczeniu, tak aby nadawała się do spłukiwania toa-

let i prania. Proces ten odbywałby się za pomocą dwóch

zbior ników oraz pompy umieszczonych w gruncie poza

domem. W pierwszym zbiorniku o pojemności 950 l zgro-

madzone ścieki szare byłyby biologicznie oczyszczane,

ﬁ ltrowane i napowietrzane, co pozwalałoby na usunię-

cie zanieczyszczeń oraz bakterii. Następnie traﬁ ałyby do

zbiornika ścieków oczyszczonych, skąd przepompowy-

wano by je do pralek i toalet.

Według producenta, oczyszczona woda szara spełnia

wymagania zawarte w europejskiej dyrektywie dotyczą-

cej wody przeznaczonej do kąpieli (76/160/EEC), a dzien-

na wydajność takiego systemu wynosi 500 l, co odpowia-

da potrzebom potencjalnych inwestorów projektowanego

budynku (tab. 2). W przypadku niedoboru ścieków sza-

rych istniałaby możliwość uzupełnienia zbiornika wodą

wodociągową, a w przypadku ich nadmiaru mogłyby być

magazynowane w zbiorniku buforowym lub przekazy-

wane do instalacji nawadniania ogrodu. System nie zaj-

mowałby dużo miejsca, ponieważ zaplanowano założyć

go pod ziemią poza budynkiem. Jest prosty w montażu

i przystosowany do zdalnej obsługi [11].

Dobrany system oczyszczania ścieków szarych w do-

mu EKOskręt pozwoliłby oszczędzić średnio 42% zuży-

wanej wody oraz niemal całkowicie zapewnić dzienne za-

potrzebowanie na wodę do prania oraz spłukiwania (tab. 2).

Analiza ekonomiczna

Aby ocenić opłacalność planowanej inwestycji, prze-

prowadzono analizę trzech różnych wersji projektowa-

nego budynku: domu bazowego, domu w standardzie

Rock wool i EKOskrętu. Zestawienie cech charakteryzu-

jących poszczególne rozwiązania zostało przedstawione

w tabeli 3.

Grey water coming from the building from activities

such as washing hands and taking baths would be recy-

cled and purified so that it could be used for flushing

toilets and washing. This process would be enabled

thanks to two containers and a pump located in the ground

outside the house. In the first container of the capacity of

950 litres the stored grey wastes would be biologically

purified, filtered and aerated, which would facilitate re -

moving impurities and bacteria. Afterwards they would

be transported to a purified waste container and then

pumped to washing machines and toilets.

According to the producer, purified grey water meets

the requirements of the European directive on bath water

(76/160/EEC), while the daily output of this system

amounts to 500 litres which satisfies the needs of poten-

tial investors of the designed building (Table 2). In the

case of shortage of grey wastes, it would be possible to

supplement the tank with tap water and in the case of their

excess they could be stored in a buffer reservoir or trans-

mitted to the garden irrigation installation. The system

would not occupy much space because it is supposed to

be located under the ground outside the building. It is

simple to assemble and adapted to remote han d ling [11].

The chosen system of grey waste purification in the

ECOtwist design would enable saving on average 42% of

consumed water and it would satisfy a daily demand for

washing and flushing water in almost 100% (Table 2).

Economic analysis

In order to evaluate the profitability of the planned

investment, an analysis of three various versions of the

designed building was performed, namely a basic house,

a Rock wool and ECOtwist standard house.

A list of characteristic features of the particular solu-

tions is presented in Table 3.

It follows from the conducted calculations that only by

increasing insulation parameters of external partitions,

would heating charges be substantially reduced and con-

sequently, the potential costs of using the house would

decrease by almost 50%. With an insignificant additional

financial outlay amounting to the thermal insulation price,

there would be a return on investment into improving the

tightness of the building already after six years.

When we take into consideration the heating installa-

tion and preparation of warm usable water by means of

a heat pump and usage of mechanical ventilation with

heat recovery, the costs of using the house would be even

further reduced. The price for the energy needed for heat-

ing the house would be about 3/4 less than in a basic

house and there would also be some savings on prepara-

tion of warm usable water. An increase would refer only

to the cost of operation of auxiliary devices. In spite of

this, due to expenditures on the necessary equipment and

with the employment of renewable energy sources, the

time of return on the investment would amount to as

many as 25 years. Although this period is not longer than

Z przeprowadzonych obliczeń wynikło, że przy sa-

mym zwiększeniu parametrów izolacyjnych przegród ze-

wnętrznych opłaty za ogrzewanie uległyby znacznej re-

dukcji, a dzięki temu potencjalne koszty użytkowania

domu zmniejszyłyby się prawie o połowę. Przy niewiel-

kim dodatkowym nakładzie ﬁ nansowym, w wysokości

ceny izolacji termicznej, inwestycja w lepszą szczelność

budynku zwróciłaby się już po 6 latach.

Po dodaniu instalacji ogrzewania i przygotowywania

ciepłej wody użytkowej za pomocą pompy ciepła oraz

zastosowaniu wentylacji mechanicznej z odzyskiem cie-

pła koszty użytkowania domu uległyby jeszcze większej

redukcji. Za energię do ogrzania domu trzeba by było wte-

dy zapłacić około 3/4 mniej niż w domu bazowym, nie-

znacznie zaoszczędziłoby się również na przygotowaniu

ciepłej wody użytkowej. Wzrósłby jedynie koszt działa-

nia urządzeń pomocniczych. Pomimo tego, z racji środ-

ków niezbędnych do zakupu potrzebnych sprzętów, przy

zastosowaniu źródeł energii odnawialnej czas zwrotu in-

westycji wyniósłby aż 25 lat. Wprawdzie okres ten mieści

Biorąc pod uwagę aspekt zrównoważonego rozwoju,

dom ekologiczny EKOskręt wypada najlepiej, jeśli cho-

dzi o roczne zapotrzebowanie na energię pierwotną. Osią-

gając wynik 93,07 kWh/m

∙ rok, jako jedyny spełnia wy-

magania nowych warunków technicznych na rok 2017

(zapotrzebowanie na energię pierwotną dla domu bazo-

wego wyniosło 173,53 kWh/m

∙ rok, natomiast dla domu

w standardzie Rockwool 109,08 kWh/m

∙ rok). Energia

użytkowa w projektowanym budynku wynosi 34,2 kWh/

∙ rok

, czyli spełnia standard NF40.

Podsumowując, domy wykorzystujące alternatywne

źródła pozyskiwania energii nie są obecnie opłacalnym

rozwiązaniem, głównie ze względu na wysokie koszty

urzą dzeń oraz ich stosunkowo krótką trwałość. O wiele

bar dziej korzystna jest inwestycja w lepsze parametry

izo la cyjne całego budynku oraz zaplanowanie na eta-

pie projek tu takich kwestii, jak odpowiednie usytuowa-

nie względem stron świata, liczba przeszkleń czy kształt

bry ły. Parametry te jednak w niewystarczającym stop-

niu przy

czyniają się do zmniejszenia zapotrzebowania na

ener gię pierwotną. Taki efekt udaje się uzyskać głównie

dzię

ki źródłom odnawialnym.

Zakończenie

Dom EKOskręt jest przykładem budynku zaprojekto-

wanego w duchu architektury zrównoważonej. Zastoso-

wane w nim rozwiązania ukierunkowane są zarówno na

troskę o środowisko naturalne, jak również na względy

ekonomiczne i komfort użytkowania obiektu. Kwestia

dbałości o powyższe aspekty nie jest już jedynie osobi-

stym wyborem poszczególnych inwestorów, ponieważ

wraz z upływem lat powstaje coraz więcej odnoszących

się do niej nowych regulacji prawnych, a część istnieją-

cych przepisów z tego obszaru ulega zaostrzeniu.

Niektóre ekologiczne technologie, pomimo oszczędno-

ści przynoszonych podczas użytkowania, w perspektywie

całości inwestycji są nieopłacalne z racji kosztów ponie-

sionych na ich instalację. W przypadku projektowanego

domu takim rozwiązaniem byłaby pompa ciepła. Chociaż

inwestycja w nią nie byłaby zalecana pod względem ma-

terialnym, to byłaby korzystna z punktu widzenia ochrony

środowiska, m.in. zapotrzebowania na energię pierwotną.

Przy projektowaniu zrównoważonego domu nie nale-

ży zapominać o samym jego użytkowniku. Obok dbałości

o wspomniany aspekt ekologiczny i ﬁ nansowy należy pa-

miętać o komforcie termicznym i akustycznym, funkcjo-

nalności wnętrza oraz zewnętrza budynku, a także este-

When we consider the aspect of sustainable develop-

ment, the ECOtwist ecological house has the best perfor-

mance with regard to an annual demand for primary

energy. By achieving the result of 93.07 kWh/m

∙ year,

this house is the only one to meet the requirements of new

technical conditions for the year 2017

(in the case of

a basic house a demand for primary energy amounted to

173.53 kWh/m

∙ year, whereas for a house in Rockwool

standard: 109.08 kWh/m

∙ year). The usable energy in the

designed building is 34.2 kWh/m

∙ year

, so it meets the

NF40 standard.

Summing up, at present the houses which use alterna-

tive sources of gaining energy do not constitute a profit-

able solution, mainly due to high costs of devices and

their relatively short durability. A more preferable solu-

tion is to invest in better insulation parameters of the

whole building as well as to plan such issues as the appro-

priate location towards the cardinal directions, the num-

ber of glazing or the shape of the structure as early as at

the stage of designing. It must be noticed, however, that

these parameters do not significantly reduce the primary

energy demand. This effect can be obtained mainly thanks

to renewable sources.

Summary

The ECOtwist house is an example of a building de -

signed in the spirit of sustainable architecture. The solu-

tions employed there are directed towards caring about

the environment as well as towards economic aspects and

comfort of using the house. Attention to these issues is not

only a question of a personal choice of particular inves-

tors because in the course of time there are more and more

new legal regulations and some of the existing rules in

this regard are becoming stricter.

Some ecological technologies, although they do bring

savings during use, when we take into consideration the

entire investment, are not profitable due to the costs con-

nected with their installation. In the case of this particu -

lar house a heat pump would be this sort of solution.

Although investing in this device would not be re -

commended as regards material aspects, it would be

profi table from the point of view of the environment pro-

tection, e.g. the demand for primary energy.

When designing a sustainable house we must not for-

get about its user. Apart from taking care of the aforemen-

tioned ecological and financial aspect, we must bear in

mind the thermal and acoustic comfort, functionality of

the interior and exterior of the building as well as aesthet-

ics of the designed layout. In order to meet all these chal-

Jednym ze współczesnych wyzwań dla architektów stało się projektowanie obiektów łączących komfort ich użytkowania z maksymalną efektyw-

nością energetyczną. Wynika to z wysokich wymogów dotyczących izolacyjności cieplnej przegród budowlanych, określonych w warunkach

technicznych, jakim powinny odpowiadać budynki i ich usytuowanie, które weszły w życie z dniem 1.01.2014 r. Projekt domu EKOskręt to

próba odpowiedzi na optymalne w aspekcie energetycznym i ekonomicznym budownictwo niedalekiej przyszłości. W artykule zawarto opis projek-

tu energooszczędnego domu jednorodzinnego EKOskręt, powstałego w ramach współpracy zespołu studenckiego z potencjalną parą inwestorów,

a zarazem użytkowników obiektu. Mając na uwadze ideę zrównoważonego rozwoju w odniesieniu do projektowania, wytworzono silne relacje

pomiędzy projektowaną kubaturą a zagospodarowaniem terenu, z wyszczególnieniem stref funkcjonalnych zarówno wewnątrz, jak i na zewnątrz.

Dobór systemu konstrukcyjnego, użytych materiałów budowlanych oraz zastosowanych rozwiązań energooszczędnych podyktowany był koniecz-

nością uzyskania jak najniższej wartości energii użytkowej. Jednocześnie na każdym etapie procesu projektowego decyzje te konfrontowano z po-

trzebą uzyskania funkcjonalnej i ciekawej architektonicznie bryły.

Abstract

One of the major contemporary challenges architects need to face, is to design structures which combine comfort of use with maximal energy

efﬁ ciency. This results from high demands regarding thermal insulation of construction partitions, described in building regulations which came into

force in 1.01.2014 r. The ECOtwist house project attempts to become the optimal future construction in terms of energy consumption and economy.

The article provides a description of an energy efﬁ cient single-family house concept called ECOtwist, developed as a result of cooperation between

a group of students and a couple – hypothetical future investors and users of the house. Keeping in mind the idea of sustainable development concern-

ing architecture, strong relations between the site and the building have been developed, distinguishing functional zones inside as well as outside.

The selection of structural system, building materials and energy saving solutions was determined to obtain the lowest possible useful energy value.

Simultaneously, at every stage of the design process these decisions were confronted with the building’s functionality and aesthetics.
