Abstract

This article is dedicated to the history of transformations of the Gothic church of St. Lawrence in Gniezno, with particular emphasis on the expansion carried out in the 1930s according to the design of architect Lucjan Michałowski. The circumstances of the project’s creation and the course of construction works, which were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, are presented.

The article also discusses the contemporary continuation of the project’s implementation, which allowed for the completion of the architect’s intentions after several decades of interruption. Analysis of preserved design documentation and in situ research enabled detailed reconstruction of the church’s transformation history.
