Abstract

In 2013, a non-destructive GPR investigation was carried out over the floors inside the Cathedral in Frombork. The investigation was performed to a depth of 3 m using an 800 MHz antenna. During the studies, the main focus was to find the place conventionally known as the “lectorium” (reading room). The investigation has confirmed the location of the strong anomalies that were identified during the first GPR study using the 250 MHz antenna in 2005. The paper discusses the methods and stages of the research. Three selected GPR cross-sections are shown as examples together with the map of anomalies in the area called the “lectorium”.

Wprowadzenie

Frombork położony jest w północnej Polsce nad Za le-

wem Wiślanym (il. 1). Po południowo-wschodniej stro nie

Zalewu Wiślanego występuje wysoczyzna mo re no wa

(o wysokościach do 30 m n.p.m.). Wysoczyznę od Za lewu

oddziela wąski (około 500 m), równinny, podmokły taras

zalewowy, na którym wznoszą się zabudowania Frombor-

ka. Krawędź wysoczyzny rozcinają dolinki, które dzielą

wy soczyznę na odrębne wzgórza. Na jednym z takich

wzgórz (około 18–20 m n.p.m.), nazywanym Wzgórzem

Ka ted ralnym, znajduje się bazylika archikatedralna (il. 1, 2).

Powstała ona w latach 1329–1388 i mieści się w ob rębie

warowni otoczonej murami z basztami (il. 2). Jest to kate-

dra gotycka z wystrojem barokowym. Świątynię tworzą:

nawa południowa (NS), nawa główna (NG), nawa północ-

na (NN), prezbiterium (P), zakrystie oraz dwie kaplice (po

stronie południowej). Sklepienia nawy głównej podtrzy-

muje siedem filarów (il. 3). Na po wierz chni po sadz ki ko -

ścio ła znajdują się liczne płyty na grob ne (epitafia).

Metoda badań

Metoda georadarowa (GPR) jest nieniszczącą metodą

geofizyczną [1]–[3] coraz powszechniej stosowaną w ba -

da niach archeologicznych i architektonicznych [4]. Sy -

stem aparatury GPR składa się z anteny nadawczej i od -

biorczej, jednostki centralnej (przetwarzającej echa fal

Introduction

Frombork is located in Northern Poland on the Vistula

Lagoon (Fig. 1). Next to the south-eastern side of the

Vistula Lagoon is a moraine plateau (with the height of

30 m above sea level). A narrow (width of about 500 m),

flat, marshy terrace, separates the plateau from the La -

goon. The buildings of Frombork, are on the narrow

terrace. The upland is cut by several small valleys (some-

times dry) forming separate hills. One of these hills,

called Cathedral Hill, is located above the city on which

stands Frombork Cathedral Basilica (Fig. 1, 2). Built

between 1329 and 1388. The Cathedral is located within

a walled fortress and has towers (Fig. 2). It is a Gothic

cathedral with baroque décor. The building consists of the

south nave (NS), the main nave (NG), the north nave

(NN), the chancel (P), vestries and two chapels on the

south side. The vaults of the nave sustain seven pillars

(Fig. 3). On the surface of the floor of the cathedral are

numerous tombstones.

Survey method

The GPR Method is a non-destructive geophysical me -

thod [1]–[3], commonly used in archaeological and archi-

tec tural research [4]. The GPR equipment consists of

trans mitting and receiving antennae, a central processing

unit (processing echoes of electromagnetic waves into

sig nals) and a computer where the data collected in the

field is stored. GPR equipment can be used with different

antenna frequencies giving different depth and spatial re -

so lution. High-frequency antennas have very good resolu-

tion and being small provide good coverage in restricted

elek tro magnetycznych na sygnał użyteczny) oraz kom -

pute ra, na którym zapisywane są dane zbierane w terenie.

Do badań GPR używane są anteny o różnym zasięgu i do -

kładności pomiaru. Anteny o wysokiej częstotliwości cen -

areas – the so called “black fields”. Low frequency anten-

nas reach greater depths, but lower resolution and have

a larger “black field”. The GPR method as a non-invasive

electromagnetic (EM) technique allows for linear measu-

rement of electromagnetic wave reflections (echoes) from

different near-surface soil layers and objects buried in the

ground. The result of the study are GPR radargrams –

images of EM wave reflections in the form of 2D or 3D.

GPR data collected in the field, are filtered using a specia-

lized software package, and then subjected to interpreta -

tion. The GPR studies can be carried out in stages: re co gni -

tion, general (2D), detailed (3D)

Results of GPR research inside the Cathedral

in Frombork

The first GPR study inside the Cathedral in Frombork [5],

up to a depth of 6 m was made in 2005 using of 250 MHz

antennas. The research showed numerous strong anomalies

in the ground beneath the floor of the Cathedral (Fig. 4).

In 2013, a further GPR survey was carried out inside

the Cathedral to verify and confirm the earlier GPR

tralnej mają płytki zasięg, bardzo dobrą rozdzielczość

i małe tzw. pole martwe. Anteny o niskich częstotliwoś-

ciach centralnych mają głębszy zasięg, jednak gorszą

roz dzielczość oraz większe pole martwe. Metoda GPR

jako nieinwazyjna technika elektromagnetyczna pozwala

na liniowy pomiar odbić fali elektromagnetycznej od róż-

nych warstw gruntu i obiektów ukrytych w gruntach.

Wy nikiem badań są falogramy georadarowe – obrazy

odbić/echa fal EM w formie 2D lub 3D. Dane GPR zebra-

ne w terenie np. wzdłuż linii przekrojowej filtrowane są

przy użyciu specjalistycznego oprogramowania, a następ-

nie poddawane interpretacji geologicznej. Badania GPR

wykonuje się etapami: rozpoznawczy, ogólny (2D), szcze-

gółowy (3D).

Wyniki badań GPR we wnętrzu archikatedry

we Fromborku

Pierwsze badania georadarowe we wnętrzu archikatedry

we Fromborku wykonane zostały w roku 2005 [5] an te-

nami o częstotliwości centralnej 250 MHz do głę bo koś ci

około 6 m i wykazały, że w gruncie pod powierzchnią

po sadzki świątyni występują liczne silne anomalie (il. 4).

W roku 2013 przeprowadzone zostały sprawdzające,

nieinwazyjne badania GPR gruntów do głębokości około

3 m, występujących pod posadzką archikatedry. Główną

uwa gę skupiono na miejscu umownie nazwanym „lek to-

rium”, znajdującym się między prezbiterium i ołtarzem

w na wie głównej (il. 3), gdzie wcześniej wykryto sil ne

ano malie georadarowe (il. 4). Badania wykonano apa ra turą

typu RAMAC/GPR z antenami 800 MHz, me todą profilo-

wań liniowych (2D). Stosowano 1 cm oraz 2 cm odstęp

między impulsami elektromagnetycznymi wy syłanymi

do gruntu. Anteny przesuwane były po po wierzchni po -

sadzki, a odległości mierzono kołem pomiarowym (il. 5).

Do badań/profilowań (w systemie 2D) w obrębie „lek-

torium” wyznaczone zostały bazowe linie kontrolne (taśma

miernicza). Na mapie (il. 6) linie bazowe oznaczono prze-

rywanymi liniami: 1-2 – dla przekrojów biegnących z połu-

dnia w kierunku północnym oraz 1-3 – dla prze kro jów

biegnących z zachodu w kierunku wschodnim. Linie prze-

surveys. The main attention was focused on the area con-

ventionally called “lectorium” located in the nave betwe-

en the altar and chancel (L in Fig. 3). The previous GPR

studies showed strong anomalies in this area (Fig. 4). The

current GPR survey was conducted to a depth of 3 m

below the floor of the Cathedral using RAMAC/GPR

with an 800 MHz antenna. The study (first stage) was per-

formed by linear profiling (2D). Scans per meter were set

up at 0.01 m or 0.02 m. The antenna was moved along the

floor surface and the distance was measured by a measu-

ring wheel (Fig. 5).

For the GPR grid (2D), within the “lectorium”, control

baselines were established using measuring tapes. On the

map (Fig. 6) they are labeled with dashed lines: 1-2 – for

the sections in the direction from south to north and 1-3

– for the sec tions in the direction from west to east. The

GPR grid has been marked by arrows. The grid was per-

formed perpendicular to the baseline, at intervals of 0.5 m

krojów georadarowych zaznaczone zostały strzałkami.

Przekroje prowadzono prostopadle do linii ba zowych,

w odstępach co 0,5 m lub 1 m. Dla każdej linii prze kro-

jowej otrzymano falogramy, które przeliczone przez jed-

nostkę centralną aparatury zostały zapisane na dys ku twar-

dym komputera jako osobne pliki danych po mia rowych.

W laboratorium pliki z danymi przeniesiono na kompu ter

obliczeniowy. Każdy plik danych źródłowych został pod -

dany procesowi filtracji w programie graficz nym Ground -

Vision. W celu analizy danych w programie tym sto so wa-

no różne palety kolorów oraz kombinacje filtrów.

Kalibracja skali głębokości została wykonana na pod-

stawie przyjętej średniej wartości prędkości przechodze-

nia fal elektromagnetycznych przez badane grunty (v =

100 m/µs), stąd na przekrojach błąd w określaniu głębo-

kości może wynosić ±50%. Po wybraniu skali barw, fil-

trów, wykonaniu filtracji oraz uzyskaniu optymalnego

razu do interpretacji i odpowiedzi na postawione pyta-

nia (czy są jakieś konstrukcje pod posadzką?), a także po

ka libracji skali głębokościowej falogramy zostały prze-

nie sione do programu CorelDraw w celu interpretacji

i oz nakowania anomalii.

Otrzymane w wyniku filtracji obrazy fal elektromag-

netycznych porównywano z obrazami modelowymi uzys-

kanymi podczas badań eksperymentalnych z profilowań

georadarowych RAMAC/GPR z antenami 800 MHz.

Zwracano uwagę na anomalie w obrazach pól EM oraz na

charakterystyczne załamania obrazów fal w strefach ano-

malnych. W programie CorelDraw11 na falogramy nanie-

siono strony świata oraz miejsca wykrytych anomalii.

Możliwość występowania struktury typu „mur” oznako-

wa no prostokątami. Miejsca możliwego występowania

„po chówku/trumny/grobu” – oznakowano elipsami, a łu -

kami zaznaczono na przekrojach anomalie wskazujące na

możliwość występowania krypty. W ten sposób powstały

przekroje georadarowe. Przekroje zawierają informacje

echogram (ra

dar gram), processed by the central unit and

stored on hard drive. In the laboratory, the raw data files

were transferred to a desktop computer processed and fil-

trated using Ground Vision software package. For data

analysis different combinations of the color palette and fil-

ters were applied.

Depth scale calibration was made on the basis of its

average value of electromagnetic waves velocity passing

through the ground surveyed (v = 100 m/µs), but it should

be stressed that the calculations bring an error of about

50% in the depth. After selecting suitable filters and ade-

quate color pallet, the data was filtered to obtain optimum

image interpretation, as well as the calibration of the

depth scale. These radargrams were transferred to Corel-

Draw for interpretation and indicating of anomalies.

The filtered images of electromagnetic waves (echo-

grams) were compared with the model images, obtained

by experimental investigations of RAMAC/GPR 800 MHz

antenna. During studies, in EM field images careful atten-

tion was paid to the characteristic refractions. The detec-

ted anomalies are applied on the echograms. Ano malies

indicating that in the ground a wall can be hidden – are

marked with rectangles. Anomalies indicating that below

the floor of the church may be a burial, coffin, or grave

– are marked by ellipses. Arches mark places where there

may be crypt/tombs. In this way, the interpreted GPR

cross-sections were made. The sections contain informa-

tion about the geological structure to a depth of about 3 m

from the surface of the Cathedral floor. The sections are

compressed, the horizontal scale is not equal to the verti-

cal scale (the vertical scale is stretched).

Selected examples of GPR cross-sections are shown in

Figures 7–9.

o bu dowie geologicznej do głębokości około 3 m od po -

wierzchni posadzki archikatedry. Przekroje są przewyż-

szone, skala pozioma nie równa się skali pionowej (skala

pionowa jest rozciągnięta).

Wybrane przykłady przekrojów georadarowych przed-

stawione zostały na ilustracjach: 7–9.

Na przykład, na przekroju georadarowym: L-(WE)5,

na wschód od kraty metalowej w posadzce (nad kana łem

instalacji c.o.), na odcinku przekroju: 2,8–3,2 m widać

anomalię, którą oznakowano czarnym prostokątem (il. 7).

Wskazuje ona, że pod posadzką może znajdować się mur.

Podobne odbicia fal widać na odcinku przekroju: 5,9–

6,1 m. Między tymi anomaliami, na odcinku przekroju:

3–5 m (na głębokości 0,5–1,5 m lub głębiej), występuje

bardzo silna anomalia w postaci paraboli, którą zaznaczo-

no owalną czarną linią. Takie ugięcia echa fal w postaci

paraboli sugerują istnienie pod posadzką pustej przestrze-

ni, której podłoga może być na głębokości około 1,8 m

(lub głębiej). Być może jest to krypta (grobowiec?).

W obrębie tej dużej anomalii są dwie mniejsze (na głębo-

kości 0,8–1,1 m lub głębiej), które oznakowane zostały

owalami (cienka czarna linia). Może są to dwa pochówki

(trumny?).

in section 2.8–3.2 m an anomaly is visible, marked with

a black rectangle (Fig. 7). The anomaly indicates that

under the floor may be a wall. A similar anomaly can be

seen in the section 5.9–6.1 m. Between these anomalies,

in the section: 3–5 m (at a depth of 0.5–1.5 m), there is

very strong anomaly in the form of a parabola, which is

marked by a black line. Such deflection echoes of EM

waves in the form of a parabola suggest the existence of

em p ty space under the floor of the church. Perhaps there

is a crypt (tomb?), with the floor at a depth of about

1.8 m. Within this large anomaly are two smaller ones (at

a depth of 0.8–1.1 m) which were marked by ovals (thin

black line). Perhaps these are two burials (coffins?).

Anomalies similar to those described above, occurring

east of the central heating installation channel (C.O.), can

also be seen in the next parallel section L-(WE)6. In the

section: 3.6–3.9 m is an anomaly, which marked with

a black rectangle (Fig. 8). The anomaly indicates that

a wall can be under the floor of the church. A similar

anomaly was also discovered in the section: 6.1–6.3 m.

Between these anomalies in the section: 3.5–5.5 m (at the

depth of 0.6–1.3 m), there is a very strong anomaly in the

form of a pa rabola, which is marked with an ellipse.

Probably under the floor of the church there is an empty

space (crypt?/basement?), whose floor may be at a depth

of about 1.9 m (or ca 0.5 m deeper). Perhaps this is a crypt

Anomalie podobne do opisanych wyżej, występujące

na wschód od kanału instalacji c.o., widać także na kolej-

nym równoległym przekroju GPR: L-(WE)6. Na odcinku

tego przekroju: 3,6–3,9 m jest anomalia, którą oznakowa-

no czarnym prostokątem (il. 8). Pod posadzką może znaj-

dować się mur. Podobną anomalię odkryto też na odcin-

ku: 6,1–6,3 m tego przekroju. Między tymi anomaliami

na odcinku przekroju: 3,5–5,5 m (na głębokości 0,6–

1,3 m lub głębiej) występuje bardzo silna anomalia w po -

staci paraboli, którą zaznaczono owalną czarną linią.

Prawdopodobnie pod posadzką istnieje pusta przestrzeń

(krypta?/piwnica?), której podłoga może być na głębokoś-

ci około 1,9 m (lub głębiej). Być może jest to krypta (gro-

bowiec?). W obrębie tej dużej anomalii (na głębokości

1,1–1,5 m) zarejestrowano także inne, ale niezbyt wyraź-

ne, dlatego nie zostały oznakowane. Być może są to także

echa od pochówków (trumny?).

Również na przekroju georadarowym: L-(WE)6.5, wy -

ko nanym innymi filtrami, na odcinku przekroju: 5,9–

6,1 m, widoczna jest anomalia, którą oznakowano czar-

nym prostokątem (il. 9). Prawdopodobnie w tym miejscu

wy stępuje mur. Na odcinku 2,5–5,5 m omawianego prze-

kro ju, między kanałem z instalacjami c.o. i wymienioną

anomalią, występuje bardzo silna anomalia (na głębokoś-

ci 0,6–1,3 m lub głębiej). Prawdopodobnie pod posadzką

występuje krypta (grobowiec?), z podłogą na głębokości

około 2 m (lub głębiej). W obrębie tej dużej anomalii (na

głębokości 0,9–1,5 m) są niezbyt wy raźne odbicia fal,

które zaznaczone zostały prostokątem. Być może są to

tak że echa od pochówków (trumny?).

Podsumowanie

Anomalie wykryte podczas badań GPR w 2013 r. zo -

stały naniesione na mapę z siatką linii przekrojowych

(il. 10). Na mapie tej zostały zaznaczone linie bazowe

oraz istniejąca w posadzce kościoła metalowa kratka nad

kanałem instalacji c.o. Miejsca silnych anomalii wykryte

na poszczególnych przekrojach zostały oznakowane linią

kropkowaną w postaci prostokąta. Anomalie wykryte

na linii przekrojowej biegnącej z zachodu w kierunku

wschod nim (W–E), wskazujące na możliwość istnienia

krypty (piwnica?), zaznaczono łukami w kolorze czar-

nym. Anomalie wykryte na linii przekrojowej prowadzą-

cej z południa w kierunku północnym (S–N), wskazujące

na możliwość istnienia pod posadzką krypty, zaznaczono

łukami w kolorze szarym. Anomalie wskazujące na moż-

liwość istnienia muru, wykryte na linii przekrojowej bie-

gnącej z zachodu w kierunku wschodnim (W–E), zostały

oznakowane prostokątem z wypełnieniem ciemnoszarym.

Na to miast anomalie wskazujące na możliwość istnienia

muru na linii przekrojowej prowadzonej z południa w kie-

runku północnym (S–N) zaznaczono prostokątem z wy -

pełnieniem szarym. Anomalie wskazujące na możliwość

istnienia pochówku, wykryte na linii przekrojowej biegną-

cej z zachodu w kierunku wschodnim (W–E), ozna ko wa-

no owalem w kolorze czarnym, a anomalie wskazujące na

możliwość istnienia pochówku na linii przekrojowej pro-

wadzonej z południa w kierunku północnym (S–N), ozna-

kowane zostały owalem w kolorze szarym.

1.5 m) were recorded other anomalies, but they are not

very clear, therefore, have not been labeled. Perhaps there

are also echoes of a burial (coffin?).

Also on radargram GPR: L-(WE)6.5, using other fil ters,

on section: 5.9–6.1 m, an anomaly is seen, which is mar ked

by a black rectangle (Fig. 9). Probably at this point under

the floor of the church is a wall. In the section: 2.5–5.5 m,

between the channel of central heating in stallations and the

said anomaly, there is a very strong ano maly (at a depth of

0.6–1.3 m), in the form of a pa ra bola, which marked a bow

(black line). Deflections waves in the form of a parabola

suggest the existence of empty space under the floor of the

church. Probably there is a crypt (tomb?), with the floor at

a depth of about 2 m. Within this large anomaly (at a depth

of 0.9–1.5 m) are not very clear reflection of waves, which

were marked by a rectangle (black thin line). Perhaps there

are also echoes of a burial (coffin?).

Summary

GPR anomalies detected during the GPR investigation

in 2013, were marked on the map with a grid of the cross-

section lines (Fig. 10). On this map there are selected

baselines and the existing metal grille over the channel

installation in the floor of the church. The places of strong

ano ma lies detected on the individual GPR cross-sections

have been marked by a dotted line in the form of a rectan-

gle. Anomalies detected on the cross-section line running

from the west to the east (W–E), indicating the possibility

of the existence of a crypt (basement?) – marked arcs in

black. Anomalies detected on the section line leading

from the south to the north (S–N), indicating the po ssible

crypt under the floor – marked arcs in gray. Ano malies

indicating a possible wall, detected on the section line

Z nieinwazyjnych badań georadarowych wykona-

nych w 2013 r. metodą profilowań liniowych (2D),

zestawionych na mapie (il. 10) wynikają następujące

wnioski:

1. Wykryte anomalie skupiają się głównie w części

wschod niej miejsca umownie określanego jako „lek to-

rium”, a szczególnie na wschód od metalowej kraty nad

kanałem c.o., istniejącej w posadzce kościoła.

2. W obrębie „lektorium”, tj. między ołtarzem w na wie

głównej i prezbiterium, pod posadzką kościoła praw-

dopodobnie znajduje się krypta (piwnica?).

3. Krypta (piwnica?) może mieć oś dłuższą o kierunku

S–N, a podłogę na głębokości około 2 m lub niżej (głę biej).

4. W krypcie mogą znajdować się pochówki (trumny).

5. Między nawą główną i prezbiterium prawdopodob-

nie znajduje się mur.

running from the west to the east (W–E), have been ma -

rked with a filled dark gray rectangle. In contrast anoma-

lies indicating the possible wall on the section line run

from the south to the north (S–N), marked rectangle filled

in gray. Anomalies indicate a possible burial, discovered

on the section line running from the west to the east

(W–E), labeled oval in black, and anomalies indicating

a possible burial on the section line run from the south to

the north (S–N), were labeled by an oval in gray.

With non-invasive GPR studies, made in 2013 by pro-

filing line (2D), listed on the map (Fig. 10) lead to the

following conclusions.

1. Detected anomalies are primarily focused in the

eastern part of the main nave conventionally known as the

“lectorium”, especially east of the metal grating over the

central heating channel in the floor of the church.

6. Badania nie wykluczają możliwości istnienia krypt

(piwnic?) o osiach W–E pod nawą główną kościoła.

7. Badania georadarowe nie pozwalają jednoznacz nie

stwierdzić, czym są wykryte anomalie. Pomiary służą do

interpretacji jakościowej.

8. Sprawdzające badania GPR wykonane w 2013 r.

w miejs cu określanym umownie jako „lektorium” po -

twierdziły wyniki wcześniejszych badań GPR [5], że pod

po sadzką znajdują się elementy konstrukcyjne.

9. Weryfikacja prognozy i danych georadarowych

moż liwa będzie po uzyskaniu danych z sondaży wy ko-

nanych metodami archeologicznymi, które powinny wy -

jaśnić także to, co kryje się w tym miejscu pod posadzką

archikatedry we Fromborku.

2. Within the “lectorium”, i.e., between the altar in the

main nave and chancel, under the floor of the church

probably is the crypt (basement?).

The crypt (basement?) may have a long axis of the di -

rection of S–N, and the floor at a depth of about 2 m or deeper.

4. In the crypt may be burials (coffins).

5. Between the main nave (NG) and chancel (P) is

a possible wall.

6. The study does not exclude the possibility of the

existence of the crypt (basement?), with axes W–E, under

the nave of church.

7. GPR research does not allow to state clearly what

exactly are the detected anomalies. The measurements are

used for the qualitative interpretation.

8. Verifying the GPR survey, made in 2013, the site named

the “lectorium”, confirmed the results of pre vious GPR stu-

dies [5] that, under the floor are structural components.

9. Verification of forecasts and GPR data will be pos-

sible after obtaining data from surveys carried out by

ar chaeo logical methods which should also explain what is

hidden in this place under the floor of the Cathedral

in From bork.

Streszczenie

W 2013 r. po posadzkach wewnątrz archikatedry we Fromborku wykonane zostały sprawdzające, nieinwazyjne badania georadarowe (GPR).

Badania wykonano antenami 800 MHz do głębokości 3 m. Główną uwagę zwrócono na miejsce określone jako „lektorium” (czytelnia).

Potwierdzono występowanie silnych anomalii wykrytych tu w 2005 r. podczas pierwszych badań GPR wykonywanych antenami 250 MHz. W pracy

omówiona jest metodyka i etapy badań. Pokazano trzy wybrane przekroje georadarowe (GPR) oraz mapkę wykrytych anomalii w części kościoła

nazywanej „lektorium”.

Abstract

In 2013, a non-destructive GPR investigation was carried out over the floors inside the Cathedral in Frombork. The investigation was performed

to a depth of 3 m using an 800 MHz antenna. During the studies, the main focus was to find the place conventionally known as the “lectorium”

(reading room). The investigation has confirmed the location of the strong anomalies that were identified during the first GPR study using the

250 MHz antenna in 2005. The paper discusses the methods and stages of the research. Three selected GPR cross-sections are shown as examples

together with the map of anomalies in the area called the “lectorium”.
