Images of an architectural idea in the works of JEMS Architekci on the example of the exhibition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the studio’s activity against the background of the creative activity of selected representatives of Bauhaus

Abstract

The subject of this article is a comparative analysis of functions of the painting works of Bauhaus representatives with the themes of architecture (with particular focus on the profiles of Farkas Molnár, Aleksander Schawinski and Ludwik Mies van der Rohe) with the role of the paintings presented at the exhibition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the JEMS Architekci studio. The purpose of this article is to show the continuity and the need to use images as a carrier of an architectural idea and to emphasize the topicality of the works of representatives of the 20th century avant-garde. The contemporary role of image in architecture goes beyond the general way of using images in the Bauhaus. The image of architecture was mainly oriented towards the architecture to be created and in the case of the above-mentioned exhibition, it may be an attempt at self-reflection and assessment of the direction of one’s own aspirations.

Wprowadzenie

Wystawę na 30-lecie istnienia pracowni JEMS Ar-

chitekci i twórczość malarską przedstawicieli Bauhausu,

takich jak m.in. Mies van der Rohe, łączy chęć ponow-

nego zderzenia dwóch tylko z pozoru odrębnych świa-

tów – zbudowanej architektury i plastyki. Spojrzenie na

twórczość awangardową XX w. z dzisiejszej perspektywy

wydaje się zasadne, gdyż w niemal każdym swoim przeja-

wie działalności awangarda odnosiła się do otaczającego

ją świata, reagowała na jego dynamikę, pojawiające się

nowe problemy społeczne czy techniczne i można na-

wet powiedzieć, że w pewnym sensie wywoływała nowe

problemy kulturowe. Tak jak sto lat temu rzeczywistość

zmieniała się pod wpływem postępującej industrializacji,

tak teraz świat w każdym swoim aspekcie podlega rewo-

lucji technologicznej, a wydarzenia związanie z ograni-

czaniem osobistego kontaktu jeszcze przyspieszają ten

Introduction

The exhibition on the occasion of the 30

anniversa-

ry of the JEMS Architekci studio and the presentation of

paintings of Bauhaus representatives such as Mies van der

Rohe reect a desire to re-collide two seemingly separate

worlds – constructed architecture and visual arts. A look

at the avant-garde art of the 20

century from today’s per-

spective seems justied because in almost every form of

its activity, the avant-garde referred to the surrounding

world, reacted to its dynamics, new emerging social or

technical problems, and one can even say that in a certain

sense it caused new cultural problems. Just like a hundred

years ago, the reality was changing under the inuence

of progressing industrialization, now the world is under-

going a technological revolution in every aspect and the

events related to limiting personal contact accelerate this

process even more. Due to the inuence of computer tech-

niques on the profession of architect and the dictate of

digitally generated images, the problem of the role of the

architectural image requires constant dening and updat-

ing of goals.

For centuries, the architectural image has been a way

of communicating with other participants in the design

wiły, że problem roli obrazu architektonicznego wymaga

ciągłego deniowania i aktualizowania celów.

Obraz architektoniczny od wieków stanowił sposób

komunikacji z pozostałymi uczestnikami procesu projek-

towo-budowlanego, ewentualnymi odbiorcami bądź służył

analizie już istniejących przestrzeni. Ze względu na wzra-

stającą rolę komputera w projektowaniu umiejętność ryso-

wania odręcznego utraciła najprostszą, utylitarną funkcję,

stała się elitarnym narzędziem o bardziej wyranowanych

zadaniach. W początkach XX w. zjawisko obrazu w archi-

tekturze spotkało się z wielowymiarową krytyką. Adolf

Loos [1] zwracał uwagę na demoralizujący aspekt rysunku,

malarstwa i zdjęć w edukacji, a także w samym projekto-

waniu, gdyż wielu architektów zaczęło traktować tworze-

nie obrazów jako swoje właściwe zajęcie o równorzędnej

wartości co zbudowane obiekty. Komunikacja obrazem

w procesie projektowym coraz częściej przypomina język

reklam, a aspekty kulturowe, literackie czy publicystycz-

ne są przy tym pomijane. Współcześni twórcy, np. Peter

Zumthor [2], traktują rysunek odręczny jako integralny

element zawodu, czasem najprzyjemniejszą część pracy

nad projektem, lub jak Valerio Olgiati [3] niemal negują

jego rolę w trakcie rozwijania koncepcji. Juhani Pallasmaa

[4] krytykuje współczesny świat jako nadmiernie zorien-

towany na myślenie obrazem, a architekturę za to, że bez-

wiednie poddaje się temu dyktatowi poprzez tworzenie

płaskich obrazów samej siebie. Rysunek architektoniczny

jest różnie deniowany, różnie są także przedstawiane jego

funkcje w praktyce, teorii czy edukacji. Poszczególne za-

stosowania pociągają za sobą konsekwencje w charakterze

powstających prac – prace plastyczne mogą cechować się

wieloznacznością przekazu gracznego, indywidualizmem

ukazywania charakteru przedmiotu, a także mogą mieć

wpływ na pozytywne kształtowanie wizerunku architekta.

Cel i metodyka

Celem tego artykułu jest wskazanie na ciągłość i potrze-

bę stosowania obrazów jako nośnika idei architektonicz-

nej, podkreślenie aktualności twórczości przedstawicieli

Bauhausu, a także reeksja na temat współczesnej roli

obrazów w architekturze. Analizie porównawczej zostały

poddane obrazy eksponowane na wystawie zorganizowa-

nej z okazji 30-lecia pracowni JEMS Architekci oraz twór-

czość malarsko-rysunkowa wybranych reprezentantów

Bauhausu: Alexandra Schawinskiego, Farkasa Molnára

i Ludwika Miesa van der Rohe; na tle ogólnych tendencji

w twórczości malarskiej reprezentantów omawianej szko-

ły. Spośród 10 płócien portretujących elewacje, rzuty lub

przekroje projektów pracowni JEMS, w artykule w sposób

szczegółowy przeanalizowano pięć takich, które nie tylko

w temacie, ale i swoim sposobie malowania odnosiły się

do idei przyświecającej projektowi architektonicznemu.

and construction process, potential recipients, or has been

used to analyze the already existing spaces. Due to the

increasing role of the computer in design, the skill of free-

hand drawing has lost its simplest utilitarian function and

has become an elite tool with more sophisticated tasks to

perform. At the beginning of the 20

century, the phenom-

enon of image in architecture faced multidimensional crit-

icism. Adolf Loos [1] drew attention to the demoralizing

aspect of drawing, painting, and photos in education as

well as in the design itself because many architects began

to treat the creation of images as their proper occupation

of a value equal to the constructed objects. Image com-

munication in the design process more and more often

resembles the language of advertising, whereas cultural,

literary, and journalistic aspects are ignored in this pro-

cess. Contemporary designers such as Peter Zumthor [2],

treat freehand drawing as an integral part of the profes-

sion, which is sometimes the most enjoyable part of the

work on a project, or like Valerio Olgiati [3], they almost

negate its role in developing a concept. Juhani Pallasmaa

[4] criticizes the contemporary world as being overly ori-

ented to thinking with images and also architecture for the

fact that it unknowingly submits to this dictate by creating

at images of itself. An architectural drawing is dened in

various ways and its functions are also presented in var-

ious ways in practice, theory or education. Particular ap-

plications entail consequences in the nature of the works

created – art works may be characterized by an ambiguous

graphic message, individualism in presenting the nature

of an object, and may also have a positive impact on shap-

ing the architect’s image.

The objective and methodology

The aim of this article is to show the continuity and

the need to use images as a carrier of an architectural

idea, to emphasize the topicality of the works of Bauhaus

representatives as well as to reect on the contemporary

role of images in architecture. Images which were pre-

sented at the exhibition organized on the occasion of the

anniversary of the JEMS Architekci studio and the

painting and drawing works of selected representatives of

Bauhaus, i.e. Alexander Schawinski, Farkas Molnár and

Ludwik Mies van der Rohe, were subjected to a compara-

tive analysis; against the background of general trends in

the painting work of the representatives of the school in

question. Out of 10 canvases portraying the façades, pro-

jections or cross-sections of projects by JEMS Architekci,

ve of which are analyzed in detail in this article, not only

with regard to the subject matter, but also with regard to

the way of painting, referred to the idea behind the archi-

tectural design.

The image in the Bauhaus context functioned in many

dierent ways

– as murals, abstract geometric patterns of

fabrics, landscapes, abstract painting, architecture draw-

ings, study drawings, stained glass designs, axonometries,

rysunki architektury, rysunki studialne, projekty witraży,

aksonometrie itp. [5]. Dlatego potrzebne było zawężenie

grupy przykładów do tych rysunków, malarstwa i kolaży,

których główny temat stanowiła architektura. Dodatkowym

zawężeniem pola było ograniczenie ich do obrazów, któ-

re ukazują ideę architektoniczną rozumianą jako wartość

dodana do przedstawienia, która ujawniała się w kontek-

ście całych cyklów malarskich, wypowiedzi teoretycznych

czy zbudowanej architektury. Analiza tekstów źródło-

wych oraz twórczości plastycznej omawianych artystów

pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie trzech podstawowych grup

obrazów: przedstawiających geometrię budynku, jego ko-

lorystykę lub będących autorską interpretacją architektury

w manierze konkretnego artysty. Na tym tle wyróżnia się

i w szczególności Ludwiga Miesa van der

, którzy korzystali z obrazów, aby przedstawić idee.

Analiza roli malarstwa, rysunku i obrazu

w procesie edukacji w Bauhausie

W Gropiusowskim ManifeścieBauhausuz 1919 r. bu-

dynek miał być kolektywnym dziełem sztuki, bez podziału

na strukturę i dekorację, a architekci, malarze i rzeźbiarze

mieli wspólną rzemieślniczą pracą materializować archi-

tekturę [5]. Rola sztuk wizualnych została podporządko-

wana zbudowanej architekturze

. Ani Walter Gropius, ani

pozostali przedstawiciele Bauhausu nie odnosili się w spo-

sób odrębny do funkcji obrazu w architekturze. Jedyne co

czynili, to krytykowali „sztukę salonową”, mającą służyć

tylko i wyłącznie „upiększaniu” wnętrz. Gropius zapro-

ponował nową rolę architekta/projektanta/artysty w spo-

łeczeństwie – polegała ona na odrzuceniu roli dekoratora

na rzecz uczestnictwa w życiu społecznym, kulturowym,

artystycznym, technicznym i duchowym [5]. Malarstwo

było częścią kursu wstępnego i miało na celu uwolnienie

potencjału artystycznego, wprowadzenie problemu koloru

Farkas Ferenc Molnár (1897–1945) – węgierski architekt, stu-

diował w Weimarze w latach 1921–1925 u Johannesa Ittena, później

pracował w biurze u Waltera Gropiusa.

Alexander Victor Schawinsky (1904–1979) – Szwajcar polskie-

go pochodzenia. W 1924 r. zapisał się do Bauhausu, gdzie studiował

u takich nauczycieli jak László Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul

Klee, Walter Gropius i Adolf Mayer czy Oskar Schlemmer.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) – niemiecki archi-

tekt działający w Europie i Stanach Zjednoczonych. Był dyrektorem

Bauhausu w latach 1930–1932.

Ta wyższość architektury nad pozostałymi sztukami jest tylko de-

klaratywna. Należałoby to rozumieć jako swoisty nowy Gesamstkunstwerk.

Johannes Itten (1888–1967) – szwajcarski malarz ekspresjoni-

styczny, szczególnie znany z teorii dotyczących koloru.

Wasilly Kandinsky (1866–1944) – rosyjski malarz abstrakcyjny,

grak i teoretyk sztuki..

Paul Klee (1879–1940) – szwajcarsko-niemiecki malarz, teore-

tyk sztuki (szczególnie koloru).

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) – węgierski malarz, fotograf,

nauczyciel i teoretyk sztuki. Przedstawiciel konstruktywizmu.

Joseph Albers (1888–1976) – niemiecko-amerykański twórca,

malarz, projektant. Poza Bauhausem wykładał w Black Mountain Col-

etc. [5]. Therefore, it was necessary to narrow down the

group of examples to those drawings, paintings and col-

lages whose main theme was architecture. An additional

narrowing of the eld was to limit them to images which

showed an architectural idea understood as an added value

to the presentation, which was revealed in the context of

entire painting cycles, theoretical statements or construct-

ed architecture. The analysis of the source texts and the

artistic work of the above-mentioned artists made it possi-

ble to distinguish three basic groups of images, i.e. those

depicting the geometry of a building, its colors, or being

the author’s interpretation of architecture in the manner

specic for a given artist. Against this background, the

works of the above-mentioned Farkas Molnár

, Aleksan-

der Schawinski

and in particular, Ludwig Mies van der

Rohe

, who made use of images in order to present ideas,

stand out.

Analysis of the role of painting, drawing and image

in the Bauhaus education process

In Gropius’BauhausManifesto of 1919, the building

was to be a collective work of art without any division

into the structure or decoration and architects, painters,

and sculptors were to materialize architecture together by

craftsmanship [5]. The role of visual arts was subordinat-

ed to the constructed architecture

. Neither Walter Gropi-

us nor other representatives of the Bauhaus made a sep-

arate reference to the function of image in architecture.

They only criticized the “salon art”, which was intended

only to “beautify” the interior. Gropius proposed a new

role of an architect/designer/artist in society – it consisted

of rejecting the role of a decorator in favor of participating

in social, cultural, artistic, technical and spiritual life [5].

Painting was part of the introductory course and its aim

was to release the artistic potential as well as to introduce

the problem of color and the recognition of form. The fol-

lowing painters participated in the conduct of the Vorkurs

[6]: Johannes Itten

, Wassily Kandinsky

, Paul Klee

László Moholy-Nagy

, and Joseph Albers

Farkas Ferenc Molnár (1897–1945) – a Hungarian architect who

studied in Weimar in 1921–1925 with Johannes Itten and later worked in

Walter Gropius’ oce.

Alexander Victor Schawinsky (1904–1979) – a Swiss of Polish

origin. In 1924, he enrolled in the Bauhaus, where he studied under the

guidance of teachers such as László Moholy-Nagy, Wassily Kandinsky,

Paul Klee, Walter Gropius and Adolf Mayer, and Oskar Schlemmer.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) – a German architect

active in Europe and the United States. He was the director of the Bau-

haus in 1930–1932.

This superiority of architecture over other arts is only declarative. It

should be understood as a kind of new Gesamstkunstwerk – total work of art.

Johannes Itten (1888–1967) – a Swiss expressionist painter, par-

ticularly known for his theories of color.

Wasilly Kandinsky (1866–1944) – a Russian abstract painter,

graphic artist and art theorist.

Paul Klee (1879–1940) – a Swiss-and-German painter, art theorist

(especially color).

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) – a Hungarian painter, pho-

tographer, teacher and theorist of art. Representative of constructivism.

Joseph Albers (1888–1976) – a German-and-American artist,

painter, designer. In addition to Bauhaus, he taught at Black Mountain

Według Kandinskiego rysunek w Bauhausie miał słu-

żyć trenowaniu obserwacji, oddawaniu nie wyglądu ze-

wnętrznego obiektów, ale ich elementów konstrukcyj-

nych, wewnętrznych sił i napięć oraz wzajemnych relacji,

które należy odkryć i następnie przedstawić jako gra-

czne „napięcia energetyczne” [5]. W tych określeniach

uwidoczniły się koncepcje, którymi Kandinsky kierował

się w swoim malarstwie, w pewnym sensie ucząc tego, co

potra, nie wiążąc bezpośrednio lub w sposób utylitarny

malarstwa z architekturą. Rosyjski malarz przywiązywał

wielką wagę do roli koloru, w swojej twórczości i dydak-

tyce rozwijał problem jego relacji z formą. Uczeń Kan-

dinskiego, student Bauhausu, a później także wykładowca

tonicznych. W twórczości malarskiej Lyonela Feiningera,

Alfreda Arndta, Paula Klee i we wczesnych rysunkach Jo-

sefa Albersa odnaleźć można malarskie interpretacje archi-

tektury tłumaczące geometrie budynków na indywidualny

język plastyczny każdego z autorów. Na tym tle wyróż-

niała się plastyczna twórczość Alexandra Schawinskiego,

Farkasa Molnára i Miesa van der Rohe, którzy łączyli

reprezentacje architektury z przedstawieniem idei prze-

strzennej bądź ich twórczość plastyczna stanowiła wyraz

indywidualnego stosunku autora do świata.

Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack (1893–1965) – niemiecko-austriacki

artysta. Autor dzieł operujących różnokolorowymi światłami.

Joost Schmidt (1893–1948) – nauczyciel w Bauhausie i College of

Visual Art w Berlinie. Nauczał liternictwa i graki użytkowej oraz fotograi.

Jego najbardziej znanym dziełem jest plakat na wystawę Bauhausu z 1923 r.

Herbert Bayer (1900–1985) – austriacko-amerykański grak,

malarz, fotograf, rzeźbiarz oraz architekt.

Benita Otte (1892–1976) – niemiecka tkaczka i projektantka

tkanin. Zaprojektowała kuchnię w Haus am Horn z 1923 r.

Hinnerk Scheper (1897–1957) – niemiecki projektant i fotograf,

konserwator zabytków. Zajmował się kolorystyką budynków. Zaprojek-

tował system kolorów budynku Bauhausu.

Carl Fieger (1893–1960) – niemiecki architekt, projektant form

przestrzennych i nauczyciel Bauhausu. W pracowni Waltera Gropiusa

projektował Fabrykę Fagusa.

Peter Keler (1898–1982) – grak, projektant mebli i architekt.

Do jego najbardziej znanych projektów należy kołyska z 1922 r.

Alfred Arndt (1898–1976) – architekt, malarz, projektant mebli.

W swoich obrazach sprowadzał elementy krajobrazu i architekturę do

uproszczonych motywów geometrycznych.

Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943) niemiecki malarz, projektant

scenograi i teoretyk sztuki. Autor m.in. muralu na klatce schodowej

siedziby Bauhausu w Weimarze.

According to Kandinsky, in the Bauhaus the aim of

draw ing was to train observation to reect not the exter-

nal appearance of objects, but their structural elements,

inner forces and tensions, and mutual relations that should

be discovered and then presented as graphic “energy ten-

sions” [5]. These terms revealed the concepts which Kan-

dinsky followed in his painting. In a sense, he taught what

he could without connecting painting with architecture in

a direct or utilitarian way. The Russian painter paid great

attention to the role of color. In his work and teaching he

developed the problem of its relation with the form. Kan-

dinsky’s student in the Bauhaus and later also a lecturer,

, tried to link the problem of

color theory with design [6].

When analyzing the general tendencies in the works

of Bauhaus representatives, several basic groups can be

distinguished among them. The works of Joost Schmidt

and Benita Otte

were graphic presenta-

tions of the geometry of architectural designs. The works

of Hinnerk Scheper

, Carl Fieger

, Peter Keler

and

Alfred Arndt

were pictorial propositions of the colors of

architectural designs. In the paintings of Lyonel Feininger,

Alfred Arndt, Paul Klee and in early drawings of Josef

Albers, one can nd painting interpretations of architec-

ture that translate the geometries of buildings into the in-

dividual artistic language of each of the authors. Against

this background, the artistic works of Alexander Schaw-

inski, Farkas Molnár and Mies van der Rohe stand out,

as they combined representations of architecture with the

presentation of a spatial idea, or their artistic work was an

expression of the author’s individual attitude to the world.

Alexander “Xanti” Schawinski took over the set de-

sign studio in the Bauhaus after Oskar Schlemmer

. His

College and Yale University. He is especially famous for his series of

images on a square:HomeagetoaSquare.

Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack (1893–1965) – a German-and-Austrian

artist. The author of works using dierent colored lights.

Joost Schmidt (1893–1948) – a teacher at the Bauhaus and Col-

lege of Visual Art in Berlin. He taught lettering, applied graphics and

photography. His most famous work is the poster for the Bauhaus exhi-

bition from 1923.

Herbert Bayer (1900–1985) – an Austrian-and-American graphic

artist, painter, photographer, sculptor and architect.

Benita Otte (1892–1976) – a German weaver and textile designer.

She designed the kitchen in Haus am Horn from 1923.

Hinnerk Scheper (1897–1957) – a German designer and photog-

rapher, conservator of monuments. He dealt with the colors of buildings.

He designed the color system of the Bauhaus building.

Carl Fieger (1893–1960) – a German architect, designer of spatial

forms and Bauhaus teacher. In Walter Gropius’ studio, he designed the

Fagus Factory.

Peter Keler (1898–1982) – a graphic artist, furniture designer and

architect. His most famous designs include the cradle from 1922.

Alfred Arndt (1898–1976) – an architect, painter, furniture de-

signer. In his paintings, he reduced landscape elements and architecture

to simplied geometric motifs.

Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943) a German painter, stage designer

and art theorist. The author of a mural in the staircase of the Bauhaus

headquarters in Weimar.

activity was manifested in many elds, the axis of which

was theater. Apart from that, he created advertising post-

ers, photography, music, exhibition projects and design.

A human head was a recurring theme in his works. In the

1930s, while working at Black Mountain College in North

Carolina, he painted watercolors presenting entire stage

designs, which during the performance took the shape of

a face as the scene lled up with objects [7]. In the graph-

ics from the 1940s, human heads took the form of tanks

and other types of weapons. In a series of photo collages,

he combined the face of Walter Gropius with architectur-

al motifs. In turn, in his architectural fantasies from the

1940s Schawinski presented colorful forms with soft re-

inforced concrete shapes with the architectural features of

Oskar Niemeyer or Félix Candela, freely scattered in the

desert landscape, which in turn corresponded to his stud-

ies on theatrical scenography. In his work, ancient motifs,

forms of contemporary architecture, symbols, metaphors

and avant-garde ideas were freely intertwined. In its own

way, this reected Gropius’ ideas of the interdisciplinarity

of the Bauhaus, not only as a design school, but as a cre-

ative environment.

Farkas Molnár in his early lithographs showed the sil-

houettes of Italian cities. In these works we can see the in-

uences of Lyonel Feininger

, Paul Cézanne, cubism and

expressionism. His later creative output included many

multi-gure compositions. He was not only involved in

painting and graphics, but also designed residential houses

and created a theoretical concept of a U-shaped theater, in

which the action could take place simultaneously on sev-

eral dierent levels [8]. A particularly interesting graphic

by Molnár was the one depicting two naked people with

elongated proportions – a woman and a man entwined in

an embrace against the background of the HausamHorn

perspective by Georg Muche and Adolf Meyer. The aus-

terity of architecture and its uncompromising nature were

reected in the undressed gures of young lovers. Their

proportions bring to mind El Greco’s painting and ex-

pressionism, whereas the banality of drawing architecture

– primitivism. One of his most famous projects is the in-

dividual, but unrealized proposal of HausamHorn from

1923. It was a red, multi-storey residential building in pro-

portions similar to a cube, connected by a pergola with the

garden with a small swimming pool. Molnár has immortal-

ized this project in many pictures painted with at planes

of colors, where the most important color element is the

red of the building. He published his later concepts in the

form of lithographs depicting buildings. These graphics

showed the basic features of objects such as the geometry

or the mutual relations of openings in a simplied way.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in his monumental ar-

chitectural fantasies and projects

, presented the idea of

formed with the use of contemporary industry and reecting the society,

was a problem discussed at that time, inter alia, by Sigfrid Gideon and

Josep Luis Sert [9].

graę, muzykę, projekty wystaw i wzornictwo. Stale po-

wracającym motywem w jego pracach była ludzka głowa.

W latach 30. XX w., pracując na Black Mountain College

w Karolinie Północnej, malował akwarele ukazujące pro-

jekty całych scenograi, które w czasie przedstawienia,

w miarę zapełniania się sceny, przyjmowały kształt twa-

rzy [7]. W grakach z lat 40. ludzkie głowy przybierały

formy czołgów i innego rodzaju broni. W serii kolaży fo-

togracznych łączył wizerunek Waltera Gropiusa z mo-

tywami architektonicznymi. Z kolei w swoich fantazjach

architektonicznych z lat 40. Schawinski przedstawiał ko-

lorowe formy o miękkich, żelbetowych kształtach o ce-

chach architektury Oskara Niemeyera czy Félixa Candeli

swobodnie rozrzuconych w pustynnym krajobrazie, co

z kolei korespondowało z jego studiami na temat sceno-

grai teatralnych. W jego twórczości swobodnie przeni-

kały się motywy antyczne, formy architektury współcze-

snej, symbole, metafory i idee awangardy. Na swój sposób

odzwierciedlało to Gropiusowskie idee interdyscyplinar-

ności Bauhausu, nie tylko jako szkoły projektowania, ale

środowiska twórczego.

torstwa Georga Muche i Adolfa Meyera. Surowość archi-

tektury i jej bezkompromisowość odzwierciedlona została

w roznegliżowanych postaciach młodych kochanków. Ich

proporcje przywodzą na myśl malarstwo El Greca i eks-

presjonizm, a banalność rysowania architektury – pry-

mitywizm. Do jego najbardziej znanych projektów nale-

ży autorska, niezrealizowana propozycja Hausam Horn

z 1923 r. Był to czerwony, piętrowy budynek mieszkalny

w proporcjach zbliżonych do sześcianu, połączony pergo-

lą z ogrodem, w którym znajdował się niewielki basen.

Molnár uwiecznił ten projekt na wielu obrazach malowa-

nych płaskimi płaszczyznami barw, w których najważniej-

szym elementem kolorystycznym jest czerwień budynku.

Swoje późniejsze koncepcje publikował w formie litogra-

sposób ukazywały podstawowe cechy obiektów takie jak

geometria czy wzajemne relacje otworów.

in a synthetic way. His characteristic feature was the use

of contemporary works of art in iconic collages

alterna-

tively with textures of materials (wood, marble) and land-

scapes, which were contrasted with the linear drawing of

architecture [9]. This gesture emphasized the importance

of elements such as noble materials, art or landscape,

reducing the elements of architecture to the role of the

background and frame for the space related with the con-

text. A common feature of the sculptures was their calmed

form which referred to classical patterns and a political

overtone. The sculptures could be viewed from all sides,

freeing themselves from the wall, thereby emphasizing

a dierent understanding of shaping architecture. Paint-

ings, on the other hand, did not hang on the walls, but

acted as partitions in space. The paintings by Picasso or

Rothko were shown without frames, treated tantamount to

a view through the windows or the textures of materials.

Mies used collage for both early conceptual studies and

nal perspective representations

. His art works went

far beyond the utilitarian representation of the geometry,

colors and scale of objects. Regardless of whether they

were collages or drawings, they were manifestos concern-

ing revolutionary thoughts in shaping space and human

relations with materials, nature and the environment. They

were autonomous works of art with informational as well

as artistic and cultural values.

Analysis of images and their role

in the activities of the JEMS Architekci studio

At the exhibition, which took place at the Jabłkowski

Brothers Department Store in Warsaw in April 2019 on

the occasion of the 30

anniversary of JEMS Architek-

ci, 45 acrylic images painted on plywood with dimen-

sions of 20 × 30 cm presented synthetic interpretations of

plans, sections, façades, shapes and silhouettes of objects.

A small format and the reduction to the simplest possible

form were intended to make the basic features of the pro-

ject easier to understand. During the exhibition, the lack

of additional information in the vicinity of the image such

as the name of the building, year or place of construc-

tion, was supposed to emphasize the universality of the

proposed architectural concepts, understood not as global

functioning solutions, but as a reection of a specically

traditional, tectonic and harmonious creation of architec-

Mies van der Rohe had contact with collage artists already in Eu-

rope, being involved in publishing the G magazine (short for Gestaltung

– German for arrangement, composition), also maintaining relationships

with artists in the Dadaist trend (Hans Richter, El Lissitzky or Kurt

Schwitters). After emigrating to America, Mies organized the exhibition

for Schwitters at the Janis Gallery in New York in 1959. This is proof of

his lively attitude towards artists using this technique. The use of collage

in the presentations of architecture corresponded to the works originat-

ing from the De Stijl group (Gerrit Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg), in

which the planes of color intertwined, giving a suggestion of a space

owing between them, which in turn was an import of ideas from Far

Eastern architecture [10].

ka czy krajobraz, sprowadzając elementy architektury do

roli tła i ramy dla przestrzeni powiązanej z kontekstem.

Wspólną cechą rzeźb była ich uspokojona, nawiązują-

ca do klasycznych wzorców forma oraz polityczny wy-

dźwięk. Rzeźby mogły być oglądane ze wszystkich stron,

uwalniając się od ściany, tym samym podkreślając inne

rozumienie kształtowania architektury. Obrazy natomiast

nie wisiały na ścianach, a same przyjmowały rolę prze-

gród w przestrzeni. Malarstwo Picassa czy Rothko poka-

zywane było bez ram, traktowane równoznacznie z wido-

kiem przez okna czy faktury materiałów. Mies stosował

kolaż zarówno do wczesnych studiów koncepcyjnych, jak

i nalnych reprezentacji perspektywicznych

. Jego prace

plastyczne sięgały daleko poza utylitarne przedstawienie

geometrii, kolorystyki czy skali obiektów. Niezależnie,

czy były to kolaże, czy rysunki, były one manifestami

dotyczącymi rewolucyjnych myśli w kształtowaniu prze-

strzeni i relacji człowieka względem materiałów, natury

i środowiska. Stanowiły one autonomiczne dzieła pla-

styczne o wartościach zarówno informacyjnych, jak i ar-

tystycznych czy kulturowych.

Analiza obrazów i ich roli

w działalności pracowni JEMS Architekci

Na wystawie z okazji 30-lecia istnienia JEMS Architek-

ci, w Domu Towarowym Braci Jabłkowskich w Warsza-

wie w kwietniu 2019 r. zaprezentowano 45 obrazów akry-

lowych malowanych na sklejce o wymiarach 20 × 30 cm,

przedstawiających syntetyczne interpretacje planów, prze-

krojów, elewacji, brył i sylwet obiektów. Mały format

i sprowadzenie do jak najprostszej formy miało na celu

uczytelnienie podstawowych cech projektu. W trakcie

ekspozycji brak umieszczonych w sąsiedztwie obrazu

dodatkowych informacji, takich jak nazwa budynku, rok

czy miejsce powstania, miał podkreślać uniwersalność

jącej społeczeństwo stanowiła ówczesny problem dyskutowany m.in.

przez Sigfrida Gideona czy Josepa Luisa Serta [9].

W swoich kolażach Mies umieszczał malarstwo Pabla Picassa,

Marka Rothko, Paula Klee, Georges’a Braque’a oraz rzeźby Artistide

Maillola, Wilhelma Lehmbrucka czy Georga Kolbe.

Mies van der Rohe zetknął się z artystami tworzącymi w techni-

ce kolażu już w Europie, będąc zaangażowanym w wydawanie magazy-

nu G (skrót od Gestaltung– z niem. układ, kompozycja), również utrzy-

mując relacje z artystami w nurcie dadaizmu (Hans Richter, El Lissi tzky

czy Kurt Schwitters). Po emigracji do Ameryki Mies zorganizował wy-

stawę Schwittersowi w Janis Gallery w Nowym Jorku w 1959 r. Stanowi

to dowód żywego stosunku do artystów korzystających z tej techniki.

Użycie kolażu w przedstawieniach architektury korespondowało jed-

nocześnie z pracami wywodzącymi się z ugrupowania De Stijl (Gerrit

Rietveld, Theo van Doesburg), w których płaszczyzny koloru wzajemnie

się przenikały, dając sugestię przepływającej pomiędzy nimi przestrze-

ni, co z kolei stanowiło import idei płynących z architektury Dalekiego

Wschodu [10].

ture (Fig. 1). In the introduction to the catalog, Aleksandra

Kędziorek noticed that the images shown at the exhibition

are formally similar to geometric abstraction. This form

of presentation has a contradictory attitude to the usage

of most popular computer visualizations. In her text,

Kędzio rek emphasized the research and analytical func-

tion of the images. The works of art show the implement-

ed and non-implemented buildings. The images reveal the

basic components of the architectural projects by JEMS

Architekci: the structure, mass, texture, materials, compo-

sition, rhythm, tectonics, etc. [11].

The investment on the territory of the former Haber-

busch and Schiele breweries is an attempt to introduce

modern architecture in the remnants of the historical fac-

tory layout. The central element of urban planning is the

former brewhouse, next to which the apartment building

is located. The designed façades resemble a repeated hu-

man gure, which was a pretext for determining the size

of the canvas (75 × 180 cm) and the use of a specic com-

position consisting in lling the frame with the silhouette.

In the previous studies, made on boards and painted with

acrylic, the relation of building E to the brewhouse or at-

tempts to approach synthetically the facade are presented.

The lightness of the openwork membrane is obtained by

the glaze method of applying paint to gradually lightening

gray levels (Fig. 2).

The lost competition for the Polish Pavilion at EXPO

in Milan in 2015 was a pretext to create an image that

would present its main ideas. The inspiration for the pro-

ject was a study for the painting Waltanie[In the Arbour]

proponowanych koncepcji architektonicznych, rozumia-

nych nie jako globalne funkcjonujące rozwiązania, lecz

odzwierciedlenie swoiście tradycyjnego, tektonicznego

i harmonijnego tworzenia architektury (il. 1). Aleksandra

Kędziorek we wstępie do katalogu zauważyła, że poka-

zywane na wystawie obrazy są formalnie zbliżone do

abstrakcji geometrycznej. Taka forma prezentacji w prze-

korny sposób ustosunkowywała się do najbardziej popu-

larnych wizualizacji komputerowych. Kędziorek w swo-

jej wypowiedzi podkreśliła funkcję badawczo-analityczną

obrazów. Prace plastyczne przedstawiają zrealizowane

i niezrealizowane budynki. Na obrazach uwidaczniają się

podstawowe składowe projektów biura JEMS: struktu-

ra, masa, faktura, materiały, kompozycja, rytm, tektonika

itp. [11].

Inwestycja na terenie dawnych browarów Haberbusch

i Schiele to próba wpisania zabudowy o współczesnym

charakterze w pozostałości po historycznym układzie

fabrycznym. Centralny element urbanistyczny stanowi

dawna warzelnia, przy której zlokalizowany jest budynek

apartamentowy. Zaprojektowane elewacje przypominają

powtórzoną ludzką postać, co stanowiło pretekst dla usta-

lenia rozmiarów płótna (75 × 180 cm) oraz zastosowa-

nia specycznej kompozycji polegającej na wypełnieniu

sylwetą kadru. W poprzedzających studiach, wykonanych

na deskach i pomalowanych akrylem, przedstawiona jest

relacja budynku E względem warzelni czy próby synte-

tycznego ujęcia elewacji. Lekkość ażurowej membrany

uzyskana jest przez laserunkowy sposób nakładania farby

na stopniowo rozjaśniające się poziomy szarości (il. 2).

from 1875. The work of Aleksander Gierymski shows the

play of light on an openwork garden gazebo. Impression-

ist character, lightness of the wooden structure and pres-

entation of the relation to the landscape referred to the

mood that was to prevail in the project. Another aspect as

regards the painting was the presentation of light in Józef

Chełmoński’s painting titled Głuszec [The Capercaillie],

which, like Inthe Arbour, is kept in the National Museum

in Warsaw. The overlapping planes of an openwork wood-

en garden structure constitute the main theme of the image.

By using the basic components of architecture – wood,

linen and the play of light – this project refers indirect-

ly to the agricultural culture of Poland and Italy (Fig. 3).

The project for the International Conference Center in

Katowice was selected in the competition in 2015. The

building which is located in Katowice’s “Culture Zone”

refers to historic urban planning, marking the old road

to Bogucice in its shape. Consisting of multi-function-

al halls, the facility is also a new frame for the iconic

neighbor – Spodek, designed by Maciej Gintowt, Maciej

Krasiński and Jerzy Hryniewiecki. The simplicity of the

body is contrasted with the expressive triangular divisions

of the roof and the main hall. By using black expanded

razu przedstawiającego jego główne idee. Inspiracją do

powstania projektu było studium do obrazu W altanie

(z cylindrem) z 1875 r. Dzieło Aleksandra Gierymskiego

ukazuje grę światła na ażurowej altanie ogrodowej. Im-

presjonistyczny charakter, lekkość struktury drewnianej

i ukazanie relacji względem krajobrazu odnosiły się do

nastroju, który miał panować w projekcie. Kolejną refe-

rencją dla obrazu było zachowanie światła w obrazie Jó-

zefa Chełmońskiego pt. Głuszec, który podobnie jak Wal-

tanie, znajduje się w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie.

Nakładające się na siebie plany ażurowej, drewnianej

ogrodowej konstrukcji stanowią główny temat obrazu.

Poprzez użycie podstawowych składowych architektury

– drewna, lnu i gry światła – projekt ten odnosi się nie-

bezpośrednio do rolniczej kultury Polski i Włoch (il. 3).

Projekt na Międzynarodowe Centrum Konferencyjne

w Katowicach został wyłoniony w konkursie z 2015 r.

Znajdujący się w katowickiej „Stree Kultury” budynek

odnosi się do historycznej urbanistyki, zaznaczając w swo-

jej bryle dawną drogę do Bogucic. Składający się z wielo-

funkcyjnych hal obiekt jest jednocześnie nową ramą dla

metal on the façades and in the interiors, the building cor-

responds to the mining character of the region. For the

same purpose, acrylic paint with an additional texture was

used in the creation of the image, resulting in a varied

matte-luminous surface of the image, which referred to

the texture of carbon (Fig. 4).

The headquarters of the Transport Technical Inspection

(TDT) is one of the dominant buildings in Puławska Street

in Warsaw’s Mokotów District. The massive, stepwise

shaped body is perceived in dierent ways depending on

the point of observation. The façade features L-shaped re-

inforced concrete prefabricated elements known from oth-

er projects and realizations of the JEMS Architekci (e.g.,

extension of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw at Wy-

brzeże Kościuszkowskie). This shaping of the building

façades gives them an original and massive character. The

gradual cladding of the building with prefabricated ele-

ments was reected in the idea and the method of painting

the images – templates through which the paint was wiped

in such a way as to form a concrete texture were applied

(Fig. 5).

In Warsaw in Bobrowiecka Street, there is a sequence

of oce and residential buildings. All objects are made

consistent due to the use of a bright, almost white color.

The façades are various attempts to obtain the depth of the

openings. The outer shell of the building at 6 Bobrowiec-

ka Street was conceived as a composition of seve ral

thin layers – a glass pane, a dark surface and an outer,

ikonicznego sąsiada – Spodka, autorstwa Macieja Gin-

towta, Macieja Krasińskiego i Jerzego Hryniewieckiego.

Prostota bryły została skontrastowana z ekspresyjnymi,

trójkątnymi podziałami dachu i głównego holu. Poprzez

użycie czarnej siatki cięto-ciągnionej na elewacjach i we

wnętrzach obiekt ten koresponduje z górniczym charakte-

rem regionu. W tym samym celu przy powstaniu obrazu

została użyta farba akrylowa z wypełnieniem dodatkową

fakturą, dając w efekcie zróżnicowaną, matowo-świetli-

stą powierzchnię obrazu, nawiązującą do tekstury węgla

(il. 4).

Siedziba Transportowego Dozoru Technicznego sta-

nowi jedną z dominant ul. Puławskiej na warszawskim

Mokotowie. Masywna, uskokowo ukształtowana bryła

jest odbierana w różnoraki sposób w zależności od punktu

obserwacji. Na elewacji zostały użyte prefabrykaty żel-

betowe o L-kształtnej formie znanej z innych projektów

i realizacji pracowni JEMS (np. rozbudowa Akademii

Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie przy Wybrzeżu Kościusz-

kowskim). Takie kształtowanie fasad budynku nadaje

im pierwotny, masywny charakter. Stopniowe okładanie

budynku prefabrykatami zostało odzwierciedlone w idei

i sposobie malowania obrazów – stworzone zostały sza-

blony, przez które wycierana była farba w taki sposób, by

powstała faktura betonu (il. 5).

Przy ul. Bobrowieckiej w Warszawie zlokalizowana jest

sekwencja budynków biurowych i mieszkalnych. Wszyst-

kie obiekty są uspójnione przez użycie jasnego, niemal

three-dimensional mosaic of tectonically located light

stone elements, which, despite the relatively shallow depth

of the façade, gives the impression of three-dimensionali-

ty. The bright plastered façades of the residential building

are perforated by loggias and deep windows with white

woodwork, which in full sun gives expressive light and

shade eects. The building at 8 Bobrowiecka Street, which

is shown in the picture, has a load-bearing façade made

of slightly embrasured concrete prefabricates which are

regularly spaced on successive levels. The four bodies lo-

cated around the inner courtyard are separated by glazed

staircases and clearly recessed from the outer outline of

the building. The whole building gives the impression of

a monolith, hence the use of a veined marble texture in the

image (Fig. 6).

Even a brief analysis of the ways in which architec-

ture is represented in the contemporary world allows us

to notice a dominant role of photography, which is not

dierent in the case of the studio under discussion. Ju-

liusz Sokołowski is the author of photos presenting the

achievements of the JEMS team in catalogs, magazines,

on their website and at exhibitions. Monumental, calm

frames of an abstract character not only inuenced the dis-

przy Bobrowieckiej 6 została pomyślana jako kompozy-

cja kilku cienkich warstw – szyby, ciemnej powierzchni

i zewnętrznej, trójwymiarowej mozaiki tektonicznie roz-

lokowanych jasnych elementów kamiennych, co pomimo

stosunkowo niewielkiej głębokości fasady stwarza wraże-

nie trójwymiarowości. Tynkowane jasne elewacje obiek-

tu mieszkalnego są perforowane przez loggie i głębokie

okna z białą stolarką, co w pełnym słońcu daje wyraziste

efekty światłocieniowe. Przedstawiony na obrazie budy-

nek przy Bobrowieckiej 8 ma nośną fasadę wykonaną

z lekko rozglionych prefabrykatów betonowych ryt-

micznie rozstawionych na kolejnych poziomach. Cztery

bryły zlokalizowane wokół dziedzińca wewnętrznego są

rozdzielone przeszklonymi klatkami schodowymi, wy-

raźnie wycofane od zewnętrznego obrysu obiektu. Całość

budynku sprawia wrażenie monolitu, stąd użycie żyłko-

wanej faktury marmuru na obrazie (il. 6).

Nawet pobieżne przeanalizowanie sposobów reprezen-

tacji architektury we współczesnym świecie pozwala na

dostrzeżenie dominującej roli fotograi, nie inaczej jest

cussed images, but also corresponded precisely to the ide-

as of the architects. Image can be an excuse for shaping an

architectural idea, as was the case with Giermyski and the

competition for the Expo Pavilion in Milan. Sketches and

images, including the ones by Maciej Miłobędzki, Jerzy

Szczepanik-Dzikowski (Fig. 3a) or Marcin Sadowski and

many others (Fig. 4a), are examples of presentation draw-

ings or are a derivative of communication in the process

of creating a building concept. The paintings mentioned

above, which were exhibited on the occasion of the 30

anniversary of the studio, were not aimed at, presenting,

inter alia, individual objects but the general and often re-

peating ideas of architecture designed in this specic cre-

ative environment. In his statements, Maciej Miłobędzki

also mentioned the aspiration to create architecture with

jest autorem zdjęć prezentujących dokonania zespołu

JEMS w katalogach, czasopismach, na ich stronie inter-

netowej oraz wystawach. Monumentalne, spokojne kadry

o abstrakcyjnym charakterze nie tylko miały wpływ na

omawiane obrazy, ale w precyzyjny sposób korespon-

dowały z ideami przyświecającymi architektom. Obraz

potra stanowić pretekst do ukształtowania idei archi-

tektonicznej, tak jak to było w przypadku Giermyskiego

i konkursu na Pawilon Expo w Mediolanie. Szkice i ob-

razy m.in. Macieja Miłobędzkiego, Jerzego Szczepanika-

Dzikowskiego (il. 3a) czy Marcina Sadowskiego i wielu

innych (il. 4a) stanowią przykłady rysunków prezentacyj-

nych bądź są pochodną komunikacji w procesie tworzenia

koncepcji budynku. Omawiane obrazy, wystawione z oka-

zji 30-lecia pracowni, miały na celu m.in. przedstawienie

simple expressive ideas which can be synthetically ex-

pressed by using a drawing or a picture [12].

Summary

– functions of the architectural image

In order to understand the role of presenting architec-

ture with the use of visual arts, it is necessary to observe

functions and limitations which were assigned to this im-

aging. Leszek Maluga in his book with a meaningful title,

i.e., Autonomicznerysunkiarchitektoniczne[Autonomous

architectural drawings] compares the works by, inter alia,

Daniel Liebeskind, Zaha Hadid and John Hejduk, whose

sketches, illustrations and pictures are a parallel eld of

creativity. Maluga proposed to divide the “architectural

drawing” into three collections, i.e., architectural design

drawings, architect’s drawings and drawings with archi-

tectural themes, not necessarily made by an architect [13].

In connection with the denition limit problem for the

terms of “drawing” and “architectural drawing”, it was

postulated to extend the scope of the second term by other

artistic works of an architect “regardless of the technique

used” [13], hence Maluga’s use of the concept of “an ar-

chitectural work” which includes other areas of creativi-

ty. All the above-mentioned images belong to the group

of visual architectural works emphasizing the role of the

medium, which is painting, drawing and collage.

Marian Fikus, in the publication Przestrzeńwzapisach

architekta [Space in the architect’s records] dened the

concepts which are used in drawing in the context of de-

sign activities and distinguished the following notions:

“autopsy record”, “seed sketch”, and also the role of

a sketchbook was mentioned – a place to note down re-

ections and create a base of ideas. Fikus emphasized the

role of drawing as a way of crystallizing an idea, which

is an expression of the author’s individual creation [14].

Maria Misiągiewicz’s Oprezentacjiideiarchitektonicznej

[On the presentation of an architectural idea] described

a cross-sectional approach to the presentation of architec-

tural designs using drawing and painting techniques. The

author drew attention to the universality of drawing and

its importance for theory in many areas of art, including

architecture [15]. Visual works discussed here, showing

the designs of JEMS Architekci, paintings by Farkas Mol-

nár, collages and drawings by Mies van der Rohe, axono-

metries by Joost Schmidt, Herbert Bayer, Benita Otte,

color studies by Carl Fieger and Hinnerk Scheper also

show a wide range of applications of artistic creativity in

architecture.

The basic division of the functions of images in the

con text of the examples discussed was to distinguish

commu nication from analysis

(Fig. 7). Architects, when

present ing their designs or constructed buildings, produce

paintings, sketches and schematic diagrams, concept and

design drawings as well as presentation drawings. In the

design process, sketches often appear on an on-going ba-

sis, they are characterized by the speed of creation and

legibility of the message (if they are addressed to other

participants in the process) or are only used for a discus-

sion with the author himself. This group includes the pen-

nie tyle poszczególnych obiektów, ile ogólnych, często

powtarzających się idei architektury projektowanej w tym

konkretnym środowisku twórczym. Maciej Miłobędzki

w swoich wypowiedziach wspominał również o dążeniu

do tworzenia architektury o prostych, wyrazistych ideach,

które da się w syntetyczny sposób wyrazić przy użyciu

rysunku lub obrazu [12].

Podsumowanie

– funkcje obrazu architektonicznego

Aby dobrze zrozumieć rolę reprezentacji architektury

za pomocą sztuk plastycznych, należy przyjrzeć się temu,

jakie funkcje i ograniczenia były przypisywane takiemu

obrazowaniu. Leszek Maluga w książce o znamiennym

tytule Autonomiczne rysunki architektoniczne zestawia

twórczość m.in. Daniela Liebeskinda, Zahy Hadid czy

Johna Hejduka, których szkice, ilustracje i obrazy stano-

wią równoległą dziedzinę twórczości. Maluga zapropono-

wał podział „rysunku architektonicznego” na trzy zbiory:

rysunki architektoniczne projektowe, rysunki architekta

i rysunki o tematyce architektonicznej, niekoniecznie au-

torstwa architekta [13]. W związku z problemem granic

denicji „rysunku” i „rysunku architektonicznego” postu-

lowane było poszerzenie zakresu drugiego terminu o po-

zostałe wytwory plastyczne architekta „bez względu na

technikę wykonania” [13], stąd też sugerowane przez Ma-

lugę korzystanie z pojęcia „utworu architektonicznego”

zawierającego w sobie pozostałe dziedziny twórczości.

Wszystkie omawiane obrazy należą do grupy plastycz-

nych utworów architektonicznych z podkreśleniem roli

medium, jakim jest malarstwo, rysunek i kolaż.

Marian Fikus w publikacji Przestrzeńwzapisach ar-

chitekta zdeniował pojęcia stosowane w rysunku w kon-

tekście działań projektowych, spośród nich wyodrębnił:

„zapis autopsyjny”, „szkic zalążkowy”, wyróżniona była

również rola szkicownika – miejsca do notowania reek-

sji i tworzenia bazy pomysłów. Fikus podkreślał rolę ry-

sunku jako sposobu krystalizowania idei, będącej wyra-

zem indywidualnej kreacji autorskiej [14]. Oprezentacji

idei architektonicznej Marii Misiągiewicz prezentowało

przekrojowo sposoby przedstawiania projektów archi-

tektonicznych za pomocą technik rysunkowych i malar-

skich. Autorka zwróciła uwagę na uniwersalność rysunku

oraz jego znaczenie dla teorii w wielu dziedzinach sztuki,

z architekturą włącznie [15]. Omawiane prace plastycz-

ne ukazujące projekty JEMS Architekci, obrazy Farkasa

Molnára, kolaże i rysunki Miesa van der Rohe, aksono-

metrie Joosta Schmidta, Herberta Bayera, Benity Otte

studia kolorystyczne Carla Fiegera i Hinnerka Schepera

także ukazują szeroki wachlarz zastosowań twórczości

plastycznej w architekturze.

Podstawowy podział funkcji obrazów w kontekście

omawianych przykładów polegał na rozróżnieniu komu-

nikacji od analizy

(il. 7). Prezentując swoje projekty lub

zbudowane budynki, architekci wytwarzają obrazy, szkice

i schematy ideowe, rysunki koncepcyjne i projektowe oraz

rysunki prezentacyjne. W procesie projektowym szkice

pojawiają się często na bieżąco, cechuje je szybkość po-

wstawania i czytelność przekazu (jeśli są skierowane do

Brno chairs from around 1930. During the course Vorkurs

under the supervision of, inter alia, Wassily Kandinsky or

Paul Klee, analytical drawing works were created, which

showed the basic features of geometry or the structure of

the material of still

lifes

. In the works by Lyonel Fei-

ninger, Alfred Arndt, Paul Klee and Josef Albers’s early

drawings depicting architecture, the formation of an in-

dividual artistic language through the use of an image de-

rived from the analysis of the surrounding reality is visi-

ble. Paul Klee’s sketchbooks are exceptionally interesting

examples of analytical work on color.

Conclusions

The contemporary role of image in architecture and

architectural education goes beyond the general way of

using image in the Bauhaus, however, it is a derivative of

the creative activity of, inter alia, Mies van der Rohe. It is

particularly visible in the activities of the JEMS Architek-

ci studio, where the image accompanies the creation of

architecture as well as its presentation and popularization.

In the Bauhaus paintings were oriented mainly towards

the architecture that was to come into existence, whereas

in the case of the above-mentioned exhibition they may

be an attempt at self-reection and evaluation of the direc-

tion of one’s own aspirations. After the crises (including

It is worth mentioning here the fundamental dierence between the

original drawing and painting curricula at the Bauhaus and the core of the

Warsaw School of Drawing, which is the structural drawing – consisting

of the use of perspective and leaving both visible and invisible lines [16].

Zakończenie

Współczesna rola obrazu w architekturze i edukacji ar-

chitektonicznej wykracza poza ogólny sposób stosowania

obrazu w Bauhausie, jest jednak pochodną twórczości

m.in. Miesa van der Rohe. Szczególnie widać to w dzia-

łalności pracowni JEMS Architekci, gdzie obraz towa-

rzyszy zarówno powstawaniu architektury, jej prezenta-

cji, jak i popularyzacji. Tak jak w Bauhausie obrazy były

zorientowane głównie na mającą zaistnieć architekturę,

tak w przypadku omawianej wystawy mogą one stanowić

próbę autoreeksji i oceny kierunku własnych dążeń. Po

Warto tutaj wspomnieć o zasadniczej różnicy pomiędzy autor-

skimi programami nauczania rysunku i malarstwa w Bauhausie a rdze-

niem Warszawskiej Szkoły Rysunku, którym jest rysunek strukturalny

– polegający na użyciu perspektywy oraz pozostawieniu linii widocz-

nych, jak i niewidocznych [16].

cownia JEMS Architekci ze swoją wystawą wpisuje się

tym samym w autoanalityczno-badawcze wystawy takich

pracowni jak Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Caruso St. John

czy Valerio Olgiati

Przykładem jest wystawa na biennale architektury w Chicago

z 2017 r. Pezo von Ellrichshausen zaprezentowali 729 akwarel pt. Fi-

nite Format 04 ukazujących typologiczne analizy brył wspomagające

ich drogę twórczą. Angielska pracownia Caruso St. John prezentowała

na wystawach kolorowe rysunki elewacji swoich projektów, takie jak

autonomiczne obrazy architektoniczne, a szwajcarski architekt Valerio

Olgiati wystawia autorski wybór obrazów (nie tylko architektonicznych,

ale również zdjęć pejzażu czy jedzenia) mających wpływ na projekty.

Olgiati jest także odpowiedzialny za wydanie książki Imagesofarchi-

tects, zawierającej wybór obrazów towarzyszących pracy współcze-

snych, szeroko komentowanych architektów.

An example is the exhibition at the 2017 Chicago Architecture

Biennale. Pezo von Ellrichshausen presented 729 watercolors entitled

Finite Format 04 showing typological analyses of bodies supporting

their creative activity. The English studio of Caruso St. John exhibited

colorful façade drawings of his projects such as autonomous architectur-

al images and Swiss architect Valerio Olgiati exhibited his own selection

of images (not only architectural, but also landscape and food photos)

that inuenced the projects. Olgiati is also responsible for publishing

the book Imagesofarchitects which contains a selection of images ac-

companying the job of contemporary and widely commented architects.

Streszczenie

Tematem artykułu jest analiza porównawcza funkcji twórczości malarskiej o tematyce architektonicznej przedstawicieli Bauhausu (ze szczególnym

skupieniem na sylwetkach Farkasa Molnára, Aleksandra Schawinskiego i Ludwika Miesa van der Rohe) z rolą obrazów prezentowanych na wystawie

z okazji 30-lecia pracowni JEMS Architekci. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie na ciągłość i potrzebę stosowania obrazów jako nośnika idei architekto-

nicznej oraz podkreślenie aktualności twórczości przedstawicieli awangardy XX w. Współczesna rola obrazu w architekturze wykracza poza ogólny

sposób stosowania obrazu w Bauhausie. Obraz architektury był zorientowany głównie na mającą powstać architekturę, a w przypadku omawianej

wystawy może on stanowić próbę autoreeksji i oceny kierunku własnych dążeń.

Abstract

The subject of this article is a comparative analysis of functions of the painting works of Bauhaus representatives with the themes of architecture (with

particular focus on the proles of Farkas Molnár, Aleksander Schawinski and Ludwik Mies van der Rohe) with the role of the paintings presented

at the exhibition on the occasion of the 30

anniversary of the JEMS Architekci studio. The purpose of this article is to show the continuity and the

need to use images as a carrier of an architectural idea and to emphasize the topicality of the works of representatives of the 20

century avant-garde.

The contemporary role of image in architecture goes beyond the general way of using images in the Bauhaus. The image of architecture was mainly

oriented towards the architecture to be created and in the case of the above-mentioned exhibition, it may be an attempt at self-reection and assess-

ment of the direction of one’s own aspirations.
