Abstract

This article is an attempt at presenting the distinguished Polish architectural historian – Professor Zygmunt Świechowski who passed away on December 28, 2015 at the age of 95. The major part of the text regards Professor’s professional career connected with a lot of circles of scholars in Poland and abroad. Additionally, the article presents the personal observations of the author who first met Professor in the 1980s. They worked closer since 2003 when together with Professor Świechowski and Professor Robert Kunkel they started the research project regarding the medieval Cistercian architecture in Małopolska. The conclusion of those deliberations is the statement that all those who knew Professor will remember him as an eminent scholar and a great humanist.

It is with the deepest sadness that we learned that Pro-

fessor Zygmunt Świechowski passed away. During his

long life Professor worked with many people and for

many people he was a pattern to follow and unquestioned

authority. Also for me. My rst contacts with Professor go

back as far as the 1980s. We cooperated closer since 2003

when together with Professor Robert Kunkel we started

the research project regarding the medieval Cistercian ar 

chitecture in Małopolska. This work resulted in a book

Architektura opactwcysterskich. Małopolskie lie Mori

mond (The architecture of Cistercian abbeys. Mo ri mond

liationsinLittlePoland) published in 2008. We worked

on that project for about ve years – long enough for the

work to turn into an adventure experienced by a bigger

group of people than just the three of us – the group that

we nicknamed ZERo after the rst names of the book’s

authors (Fig. 1).

I learned a lot just from looking at Professor Świe chow

ski work. When the project started Professor had al ready

been working on Cistercian architecture for almost fty

years and it seemed that he would just sit at the desk and

do some editing to his earlier texts. Nothing like that. He

would be excited about going to libraries, visiting archives

and the specic sites that we studied. With great passion

he would take new photographs, complete de scrip tions and

observations. He was then already 82 but he still had the

spirit of a student fascinated again with Cis ter cian ar chi

tecture. I will always remember Professor wal king fast

with his camera and taking pictures (Fig. 2). Pro fessor

him self talked about it in 2008: Itis,afterall,asafeand

healthy profession spent in the attics and on the towers

wheretheonlydangeronecanfacecomesfromthespiders

disturbedbyintrudersdestroyingtheirwebs,scaredbats

yingawayorowlsblindedwiththeashlight.Climbing

Z głębokim smutkiem przyjęliśmy wiadomość o śmier

ci prof. Zygmunta Świechowskiego. W ciągu długiego ży

cia Profesor współpracował z wieloma osobami, dla wie lu

stał się wzorcem i niepodważalnym autorytetem. Tak że

dla mnie. Moje pierwsze kontakty z Profesorem się gają

już lat 80. ubiegłego stulecia. Zacieśnienie na szej współ 

pra cy nastąpiło od roku 2003, gdy wraz z Nim i prof. Ro 

ber tem Kunklem rozpoczęliśmy realizację pro jektu ba 

daw cze go dotyczącego średniowiecznej ar chi tek tu ry cy 

ster skiej w Małopolsce. Efektem tych prac była wspól na

książ ka wydana w 2008 r. pt.: Architekturaopactwcyster

skich.MałopolskielieMorimond [1]. Reali za cja wspom 

nianego projektu trwała blisko 5 lat – na tyle długo, by

wspólna praca stała się przygodą prze ży wa ną w szer szym

gronie, żartobliwie nazwanym grupą ZERo od imion

autorów książki (il. 1).

My contact with Professor made me realize also that

one of the qualities of an expert scholar is his unstoppable

inquisitiveness and humbleness in respect of his own

knowledge. It is possible to develop such a feature only

when you can keep the original fascination and passion

to discover new things. Let me once again use Professor’s

words: Therewardwhichisimmanentlyconnectedwith

theworkofanarchitectureresearcheristheincomparable

estheticexperiencesprovidedbythedirect,andnotonly

visualbutalsohapticcontactwithaworkofarchitecture.

A great satisfaction comes from small discoveries –

registeringunaccountablefeatureswhosecompilationso

metimescausesarevisionofformerviewsonaspecic

building,itsoriginalshapeandchronology[2, p. 88].

Knowing Professor resulted also with his cooperation

with the scientic journal “Architectus” – since 2003 he

worked with its editorial staff and also published nu me

rous articles in the periodical. In 2011, it published his

article on English architecture of the cathedral in Bath,

which was the result of his fascination with lateGothic

architecture of English cathedrals [3].

As a result of our professional contacts Professor also

actively participated in the work of the Committee for

History and Conservation of Sacred Architecture at PKN

ICOMOS, where he became a member when it was esta 

blished in 2006 [4]. He actively participated in the se ries

of scientic seminars AuthenticityinResearchandCon

servationofArchitecture, organized by the Committee. In

2013, he presented a paper on selected examples of con 

ser vation of Romanesque architectural sculpture in France,

Kontakt z Profesorem uzmysłowił mi także, że ce

chą wytrawnego badacza jest jego nieustająca do ciek 

li wość i pokora wobec własnej wiedzy. Wypra co wa nie

ta kiej cechy jest możliwe tylko wtedy, gdy po tra  my za

chować w sobie pierwotną fascynację i pasję po zna wa 

nia. Jeszcze raz posłużę się słowami Pro fesora: Nagrodą

tkwiącąimmanentniewdziałalnościbadaczaarchitektury

są niezrównane przeżycia natury estetycznej, jakie daje

bezpośredni,nietylkowizualny,aletakżehaptycznykon

taktzdziełemarchitektury.Wielkąsatysfakcjęprzynoszą

drobne odkrycia – rejestracja nieuwzględnianych cech,

którychsumapozwalaniekiedynarewizjędotychczaso

wychpoglądównatemattakiejczyinnejbudowli,jejpier

wotnegokształtuichronologii [2, s. 88].

Znajomość z Profesorem zaowocowała także Jego

współ pracą z pismem naukowym Wydziału Architektury

Poli techniki Wrocławskiej „Architectus” – od 2003 r.

brał udział w pracach redakcji naukowej periodyku. Pu

bli kował także wielokrotnie na łamach pisma. W 2011 r.

uka zał się jego artykuł dotyczący katedry w Bath, będący

wynikiem fascynacji Profesora póź no gotycką architektu

rą katedr angielskich [3].

Efektem moich kontaktów zawodowych z Profesorem

był również Jego aktywny udział w działaniach Komi

sji Historii i Konserwacji Architektury Sakralnej PKN

ICOMOS, której członkiem został w momencie jej po

w sta nia w 2006 r. [4]. Aktywnie uczestniczył w cyklu

se minariów naukowych Autentyzm w badaniach i kon

serwacji architektury, organizowanych przez tę ko mi 

sję i Wy dział Architektury Politechniki War szaw skiej.

W 2013 r. za prezentował referat dotyczący wy bra nych

przy kładów kon serwacji romańskiej rzeźby archi tek

tonicznej we Fran cji, a w 2015 r. omówił odbudowę ka

tedry w Bagrata w Kutaisi (Gruzja) jako przyczynek do

problematyki re kon strukcji (il. 3). W 2014 r. Profe sor

wziął także udział w trzeciej międzynarodowej konfe

ren cji z cyklu Forum scien tiae cisterciense, orga ni zo wa 

nej przez komisję w kla sztorze cysterskim w Trzeb ni cy.

Przed stawił tam re ferat wskazujący na odmienność archi

tektury ko ścioła trzeb nickiego od kanonów archi tektu 

ry cyster skiej [5].

and in 2015 he described the rebuilding of Bagrati ca the

dral in Kutaisi (Georgia) as his contribution to the issue of

reconstruction (Fig. 3). In 2014, Profesor took part in the

third international conference in the series Forumscien

tiae cisterciense, organized by the Committee at the Ci ster

cian monastery in Trzebnica where he presented a paper

demonstrating how the architecture of the church in Trzeb

nica deviates from the canons of Cistercian ar chitecture [5].

The description of Professor’s activities over the last

three years of life is obviously only a small part of his

great professional career [2]. Professor Świechowski

was born in 1920 in Wilno. In the years 1928–1933 he

attended a Polish junior high school in Poniewież and in

the years 1934–1939 the Sułkowski Junior High School

in Rydzyn. In 1945, he began to study art history at Adam

Mickiewicz University in Poznań under the supervision

of Professor Szczęsny Dettlaff. In the years 1945–1947,

he worked as assistant in the division of graphic arts at

the Greater Poland Museum and in the years 1947–1948

as assistant in the Department of Art History at UAM. In

1948, he was awarded the master’s degree on the basis

of the thesis entitled ArchitekturagranitowaPomorzaZa

chodniego (GraniteArchitectureofWesternPomerania);

a year later he was appointed assistant in the In sti tute of

Polish Architecture at the Warsaw University of Te chno 

logy; in 1950, he defended the doctoral disser ta tion en

titled Opactwo cysterskie w Sulejowie (The Cistercian

AbbeyinSulejów). While work ing at the university he was

appointed (1951–1963) di rector of the division of studies

and documentation at the State Enterprise of Mo nu ments

and Sites Preserva tion Shops. In 1955, after the title of

assistant professor was conferred upon him Z. Świe chow

ski took the position of the head of monuments and sites

preservation section at the Institute of Polish Ar chi tec ture

at the Warsaw University of Technology. In the years 1956–

zawodowego [2]. Profesor urodził się w 1920 r. w Wilnie,

w latach 1928–1933 uczęszczał do polskiego gimnazjum

w Poniewieżu, a w latach 1934–1939 do gimnazjum

im. Sułkowskich w Rydzynie. W roku 1945 zaczął stu

dio wać historię sztuki na uniwersytecie im. Adama

Mic kie wi cza w Poznaniu (UAM) pod kierunkiem prof.

Szczęsne go Dettlaffa. W latach 1945–1947 pracował jako

asy stent w dziale graki Muzeum Wielkopolskiego, w la

tach 1947–1948 był asystentem katedry Historii Sztuki

UAM. Stopień magistra otrzymał w 1948 r. na pod sta wie

pracy pt. ArchitekturagranitowaPomorzaZachodniego,

rok później został asystentem w Zakładzie Archi tek tu ry

Polskiej Politechniki Warszawskiej, w roku 1950 ob ronił

pracę doktorską pt. OpactwocysterskiewSulejowie. Pra -

cu jąc na uczelni, w latach 1951–1963 był rów no cześ nie

dyrektorem działu studiów i dokumentacji w Pań stwo

wym Przedsiębiorstwie Pracownie Konserwa cji Za byt

ków (PP PKZ). Po przyznaniu w roku 1955 tytu łu do 

cen ta Profesor objął kierownictwo sekcji konser wacji

za byt ków w Instytucie Architektury Polskiej Politechniki

Warszawskiej. W latach 1956–1957 przebywał na sty

pen dium Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de Civilisation

Mé diévale. Na stanowisku kierownika Katedry Historii

Sztuki na Uniwersytecie Wrocławskim pracował w latach

1963–1978, z pracy tej zrezygnował w związku z obję

ciem stanowiska kierownika Zespołu do Badań Nauko

woKonserwatorskich w Zarządzie PP PKZ. W roku 1967

Rada Państwa nadała Zygmuntowi Świechowskiemu ty

tuł nau kowy profesora nadzwyczajnego, a w roku 1986

tytuł profesora zwyczajnego nauk humanistycznych. W la

tach 1979–1990, przez trzy kadencje, aż do osiągnięcia

wieku emerytalnego w 1990 Profesor kierował Instytutem

Architektury i Urbanistyki Politechniki Łódzkiej. W roku

1991 został prezesem Stowarzyszenia „Patria Polonorum”

– organizacji stowarzyszonej z „Europa Nostra”. W la

tach 1995–2000 kierował programem badawczym Mi nis

terstwa Kultury i Sztuk „Tysiąclecie Zjazdu Gnieź nień

skiego”, a w 2002 r. organizował wystawę w Brugii na

temat polskiego wkładu w konserwację zabytków na te

renie Ukrainy i Białorusi.

Od wczesnej młodości zainteresowania naukowe Pro

fesora były ukierunkowane na problematykę historyczną

i dawną sztukę. Jako nastolatek dokumentował kapliczki

i krzyże drewniane towarzyszące licznie zagrodom wiej

skim na rodzinnej Żmudzi. W latach 30. XX w. były one

niszczone podczas komasacji gruntów, co prowadziło

do likwidacji wsi „ulicówek” na rzecz wsi o za bu dowie

roz proszonej. Planowane studia uniwersyteckie z historii

sztu ki zostały podjęte z wieloletnim opóźnieniem spo wo

do wanym wybuchem drugiej wojny światowej. Jednak

in ten sywna praca Profesora wpłynęła na skrócenie ok re

su studiów na Uniwersytecie Poznańskim do trzech lat,

a tak że umożliwiła podjęcie pracy w muzeum i na uni wer

sytecie w charakterze asystenta.

W okresie tym Profesor zafascynowany średnio wiecz ną

architekturą tzw. Ziem Odzyskanych opracował „dzie wi czy”

temat granitowej architektury kościołów para alnych

Pomorza Zachodniego. Równocześnie ściśle współ pra

co wał z poznańskim Instytutem Zachodnim i przy go to

wał rozdziały do monograi Pomorza Zachod nie go oraz

Warmii i Mazur. Powstałe wówczas publika cje na te mat

europejskiej sztuki romanizmu i gotyku – jako je dyne –

na długie lata miały stanowić informację dla star szych

roczników gimnazjalnych i studentów kie run ków hu ma

nistycznych.

Przełomowym momentem w życiu naukowym Profe

so ra była propozycja prof. Jana Zachwatowicza przej 

ścia w charakterze asystenta do Zakładu Architek tury

Pol skiej Politechniki Warszawskiej. W zakładzie tym

Pro fesor brał udział w przygotowaniu pierwszej wersji

al bu mu ar chitektury polskiej (za co otrzymał dy plom

ho no rowy Wydawnictw Technicznych) i jedno cześnie

pra co wał nad wydaniem pierwszego tomu hi storii archi 

tek tury polskiej według programu Oskara So snow skie go

oraz gromadził materiały dotyczące architektury cy ster

skiej Małopolski, co zakończyło się obronioną roz pra

wą doktorską na temat opactwa w Sulejowie. Od tej po 

ry najpilniejszym zadaniem badawczym Profesora było

uzyskanie w miarę pełnej ewidencji zabytków bu do w

nictwa murowanego, wzniesionych do połowy XIII w.

Pierwszą próbą takiej pracy była monograa pt. Archi

tektura na Śląsku do połowy XIII wieku. Koncepcja ta

zy ska ła aprobatę Komitetu Badań nad Początkami Pań 

stwa Polskiego PAN. Dzięki pomocy Komitetu w cią gu

trzech lat (1953–1956) Profesor opracował katalog pt.

Budownictwo romańskie w Polsce (wydany w 1963 r.).

Pu blikacja ta odegrała ważną rolę przy tworzeniu pro

gra mów badawczych i konserwatorskich dotyczących

tej gałęzi budownictwa. Dzięki obszernemu streszczeniu

fran cus kiemu książka trała w obieg międzynarodowy,

uzy skując pochlebne recenzje zagraniczne.

Przełom polityczny 1956 był także wielkim przeło

mem w rozwoju naukowym Zygmunta Świechowskiego.

1957, he had a scholarship granted by the Centre d’Etudes

Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévale. In the years 1963–

1978, he held the position of head of the department of Art

History at the University of Wrocław – he resigned when

he took the position of head of Research and Preservation

Team in the Management Board of the State Enterprise

of Mo numents and Sites Preservation Shops. In 1967,

the State Council conferred upon Professor Świechowski

the scien tic title of associate professor, and in 1986 the

title of full professor of arts. In the years 1979–1990, the

Pro fessor headed the Institute of Architecture and Urban

Planning at the Technical University of Łódz for three

terms of ofce until his retirement in 1990. In 1991, he

be came President of the “Patria Polonorum” Association

– an organization afliated with “Europa Nostra”. In the

years 1995–2000, he headed the research program of

the Ministry of Culture and Art “The Millennium of the

Council of Gniezno” and in 2002 he organized the ex hi 

bition in Brugge on the Polish contribution to the pre ser

vation of monuments and sites in the Ukraine and Belarus.

Since his early youth the Professor’s scientic inte

rests were directed towards historical problems and early

art. As a teenager he documented road shrines and nu

me rous wooden crosses placed in village homesteads

in his homeland of Żmudź. In the 1930s, they suffered

de struc tion during the process of the enclosure of land,

which resulted in the liquidation of single road villages

for the benet of dispersed building planning. He began

his studies of art history at the university much later

than originally planned due to World War II. However,

as a result of Professor Świechowski’s intensive work

he completed the studies at the University of Poznań in

three years, started work at the museum and at the uni

ver sity as an assistant. At that time the Professor was

fas cinated by medieval architecture of the socalled Re

gained Territories and studied the unexplored subject of

granite architecture of parish churches in Western Po

merania. At the same time he closely cooperated with the

Poznań Western Institute and wrote some chapters for

the monograph on Western Pomerania as well as Varmia

and Masuria. The publications written at that time on

European Romanesque and Gothic art remained, for many

years to come, the only source of information for junior

high school and university students of arts.

The proposal offered to him by Professor Jan Zachwa

to wicz to move as assistant to the Institute of Polish Archi

tecture at the Warsaw University of Technology was the

turning point for Zygmunt Świechowski in his scientic

career. There, the Professor participated in preparing the

rst edition of the album of Polish architecture (he received

an honorary diploma of the Technical Publications for

that); at the same time he was working on the rst volume

of the history of Polish architecture according to Oskar

Sosnowski’s program and collecting materials regarding

Cistercian architecture of Little Poland, which ended in

the defense of his doctoral dissertation on the Cistercian

Abbey in Sulejów. Since that moment the Professor’s most

important research objective was to collect a list of historic

masonry buildings, as complete as possible, erected by

the middle of the 13

mu roczną podróż po zabytkach architektury romań skiej

Fran cji i Włoch. Była to podróż studyjna, uwzględ niają ca

obiekty mało znane i trudno dostępne. Jednocześnie Pro

fesor nie zaniedbywał tematyki polskiej – opracował roz 

działy w wielkiej dwutomowej monograi katedry gnieź 

nieńskiej oraz napisał liczne artykuły publikowane także

za granicą (m.in. w: „Zeitschrift fűr Österreichische Denk 

malpege”, „Cahiers de Civilisation Médiévale”, „Zeit 

schrift fuer Kunstgeschichte” i „Zeitschrift für Kunst 

wissenschaft”).

Jak już wspomniałam, Profesor zajmował się też za

chodnią sztuką romańską. W roku 1973 wydał w języku

fran cuskim książkę o rzeźbie architektonicznej pt. Sculp

ture romane d’Auvergne, a dziewięć lat później – przy

współ udziale Alberta Rizziego i Richarda Hamana – pracę

w języku włoskim pt. Patere e Formelle z fotograa

mi pół tora tysiąca nieznanych rzeźb architektonicznych

w pa łacach weneckich z XI–XIII w. W 1980 r. ukazała się

książ ka Profesora pt. SztukaromańskawPolsce z czte re

ma wersjami obcojęzycznymi.

W latach 90. XX w. Profesor zajął się interpretacją

nowych badań archeologicznych, w których uczestniczył

jako kierownik czy konsultant (m.in. Trzemeszno, Mo

gilno, Strzelno). Kontynuował także prace przy nowej

wer sji katalogu architektury romańskiej, opublikowanego

w 2000 r. Przedstawił również nowe spojrzenie na sztu kę

romańską w książce pt.Romanizm, wydanej jako pierw 

szy tom serii „Sztuka Polska” (2004). W ostatnich la

tach działalność naukową Profesora zdominowały dwa

za gadnienia. Pierwsze to podjęty na nowo po półwieczu

te mat małopolskich opactw cysterskich. Drugi wątek to

datowanie architektury średniowiecznej za pomocą ana

lizy drobin węgla drzewnego 14C, które znajdują się

w zaprawach murarskich.

Na przestrzeni kilku dziesiątków lat Zygmunt Świe

chowski pełnił funkcję redaktora prac zbiorowych, takich

jak SztukaPomorzaZachodniego (1973), ZdziejówSztu

kiŚląskiej (1978), Wrocław,jegodziejeikultura (1978),

OsadnictwoiarchitekturaziempolskichwdobieZjazdu

Gnieźnieńskiego (2000).

Profesor nie tylko w okresie studiów przywiązywał

wa gę do właściwej popularyzacji wiedzy. W roku 1997

przy udzia le wy bitnych historyków architektury zainau

gu ro wał serię „Szlakami Polskiego Millenium”. Uzew

nętrz nie niem prac badawczonaukowych były liczne wy 

kła dy w kraju i za gra nicą m.in. na zaproszenie Sor bo ny,

uni wersytetu lon dyń skiego, sztrasburskiego, ko loń skie

go, Centralnego In sty tu tu Historii Sztuki w Mo na chium,

uni wersytetu w Ber li nie. Inną formą pro mo cji sta nu

ba dań był aktywny udział w sympozjach i mię dzy na

ro dowych kongre sach hi storii sztuki. Wymienić tu wy

pad nie kongresy w Pa ry żu, Bonn, Granadzie i Bolonii

oraz współpracę z wy bitnymi historykami sztuki m.in.

z profesorami Sor bony Ludwikiem Grodeckim i André

Gra barem, z Je rzym Żarneckim w Londynie, dyrektorem

area was the monograph etitled ArchitekturanaŚląskudo

połowyXIIIwieku (SilesianArchitectureuntiltheMiddle

of the 13

Century). This conception was approved by

the Committee for Research on the Beginnings of the

Polish State at the Polish Academy of Sciences. With the

help of the Committee it took the Professor three years

(1953–1956) to develop a catalog etitled Budownictwo

romańskiew Polsce (Romanesque Buildingsin Poland)

published in 1963. This work played an important role in

developing research and preservation programs regarding

this area of building. Due to its extensive summary in

French, the book was in the international circulation and

was critically acclaimed abroad.

The political breakthrough in 1956 was also a great

breakthrough in the scientic career of Professor Świe 

chowski. The scholarship granted by the Centre Su

périeures de Civilisation Médiévale in Poitiers and the

help of his relatives in London enabled him to go on a year

long trip and visit the historic monuments of Romanesque

ar chitecture in France and Italy. On that trip he also visited

buildings which are less known and difcult to access.

Professor Świechowski did not neglect Polish topics – he

wrote some chapters in the great twovolume monograph

on the cathedral in Gniezno as well as numerous ar ticles

also published abroad (e.g. in “Zeitschrift für Öster rei chi

sche Denk malpege”, “Cahiers de Civilisation Mé dié

vale”, “Zeit schrift für Kunstgeschichte” and “Zeit schrift

für Kunst wissenschaft”).

Furthermore, the Professor was also interested in West 

ern Romanesque art. In 1973, he published a book on ar 

chitectural sculpture entitled Sculpture romane d’Auver

gne in French and nine years later – together with Albert

Rizzi and Richard Haman – he published a book in Italian

entitled PatereeFormelle with photographs of one thou-

sand and ve hundred unknown architectural sculp tures

in Venetian palaces from the 11

–13

cen turies. In 1980,

Professor published Sztuka romańska w Polsce (Ro

manesque Art in Poland) a book with editions in four

languages. In the 1990s, the Professor took to inter pre ting

new archeological research ndings in which he par ti ci

pated as head or consultant (e.g. in Trze meszno, Mo gilno,

Strzelno). He also continued to work on the new edition

of the catalog of Romanesque archi tecture pu blished in

2000. Also he, presented new views on Ro ma nesque art in

the book entitled Romanizm (RomanesqueArt) published

as the rst volume in the series of “Polish Art” (2004).

Over the last few years the Professor’s research activity

was dominated by two topics. The rst of them taken

up after a 50yearlong break deals with the Cistercian

abbeys in Little Poland. The other is connected with

dating medieval architecture with the use of analysis

of carbon 14C particles which can be found in mortars.

Over the period of a few decades Professor Świechowski

was editor of such joint publications as SztukaPomorza

Zachodniego (ArtofWesternPomerania, 1973), Zdziejów

SztukiŚląskiej (HistoryofSilesianArt, 1978), Wrocław,

jegodzieje i kultura (Wrocław, itsHistory and Culture,

1978), Osadnictwoiarchitekturaziempolskichwdobie

Zjazdu Gnieźnieńskiego (SettlementsandArchitectureof

PolishLandintheTimesoftheCouncilofGniezno, 2000).

Ważnym kierunkiem działań Profesora były także

pra ce w zakresie konserwacji zabytków. Równolegle do

za trudnienia na uczelni pracował w placówkach odpo 

wie dzialnych za ochronę i konserwację zabytków. Po

cząt kowo był zastępcą prof. Stanisława Herbsta w biu rze

studiów historycznych Ministerstwa Kultury, a na stęp 

nie objął kierownictwo Działu Dokumentacji PP PKZ.

Na tym stanowisku przygotował i wdrożył model opra 

co wania naukowego poprzedzającego podjęcie prac

kon ser watorskich oraz kwestionariusz ich przebiegu.

W re zul tacie powstało kilka tysięcy dokumentacji za

pew niających prawidłowe założenia konserwatorskie pla

no wa nych ingerencji budowlanych, a dziś stanowiących

cen ne źródło. Wiele z tych opracowań było i pozostało

pierw szym i jedynym studium naukowym obiektu. Było

to nie wątpliwe osiągnięcie na tle europejskim. Pro fe sor

praktycznie nigdy nie stracił kontaktu z pro ble ma tyką

konserwatorską, biorąc udział w pracach wielu ko misji,

pełniąc obowiązki przewodniczącego gre mium nadzo 

rującego przebieg intensywnych prac kon ser wa torskich

w katedrze gnieźnieńskiej w ciągu dzie sięcioleci (od

1996 r.). Konsultował także prace konserwatorskie i re

waloryzacyjne w Tumie pod Łęczycą oraz problemy

zwią zane z konserwacją i rozbudową Muzeum Archi tek

tury we Wrocławiu, osadzonego w kompleksie za bu do wy

klasztoru pobernardyńskiego.

Profesor zmarł 28 grudnia 2015 r. w wieku 95 lat.

Wszyscy, którzy mieli z nim jakikolwiek kontakt, będą go

wspominać jako wybitnego uczonego i wielkiego hu ma

nistę. Swoje życie sam określał jako spełnione – w czasie

odbierania nagrody im. Profesora Jana Zach wa towi

cza w Sali Wielkiej Zamku Królewskiego w Warszawie

w 2008 r. powiedział: […] otrzymuję nagrodę za coś,

cozostałojużitohojniewynagrodzone.Wmoimwieku,

kiedystojęuprogustanu,określanegowdawnej pieśni

akademickiejjakomolestasenectus–dokuczliwastarość,

potwierdzenie,żesięcośsensownegowżyciuzrobiło,jest

bezcenne [2, s. 89].

The Professor always paid attention to proper popu la

rization, not only during his studies. In 1997, he started the

series entitled “On the Trails of Polish Millennium” with

the participation of distinguished architecture historians.

His scientic research work was presented to the public

during his numerous lectures in Poland and abroad in the

Sorbonne, University of London, Strasbourg, Cologne,

Central Institute of Art History in Munich, University in

Berlin. Another form of promotion of his research was

his active participation in symposiums and international

congresses such as congresses of art history in Paris,

Bonn, Granada and Bologna, to name a few, as well as

the cooperation with many eminent art historians such as

Pro fessor Ludwik Grodecki and André Grabar from the

Sor bonne, Jerzy Żarnecki in London, Otto v. Simson, Di

rector of the Institute of Art History in Berlin, Professor

Krönig from Cologne and his successor Günter Binding.

The works on the preservation of historic buildings

are also an important area of the Professor’s activities.

While working at the university he was working in posts

responsible for the protection and preservation of historic

buildings. At rst he was assistant to Professor Stanisław

Herbst in the ofce for historical studies at the Ministry

of Culture and later he took the position of Director of

Documentation Department at the State Enterprise of

Mo numents and Sites Preservation Shops. While holding

this position he developed and implemented a model

of a research paper to precede preservation work and its

check list. As a result a few thousand documentations

were developed with correct preservation assumptions and

planned construction works which are a valuable source

today. Many of those studies were the rst and still remain

the only scientic research of given objects. Un doubtedly

it was an achievement on the European scale. The Pro

fessor practically never lost touch with the preservation

issues, working in numerous preservation commissions

holding the position of the chairperson of the committee

supervising the process of intensive preservation work

in the cathedral in Gniezno since 1996. At present he

is consultant of the preservation and renovation works

carried out in Tum near Łęczyca, and problems connected

with the restoration and extension of the Museum of Ar

chi tecture in Wrocław which is housed in the building

com pound of the former Bernardine monastery.

Professor passed away on December 28, 2015 at the

age of 95. All those who knew him, or just met him, will

remember him as an eminent scholar and a great humanist.

He described his own life as complete – when he received

Professor Jan Zachwatowicz Award at the Great Hall of

the Royal Castle in Warsaw in 2008 said: I am awarded for

somethingthathasalreadybeengenerouslyrecognized.

Streszczenie

Artykuł ten jest próbą przedstawienia sylwetki wybitnego polskiego historyka architektury prof. Zygmunta Świechowskiego, który zmarł 28 grudnia

2015 r. w wieku 95 lat. Zasadnicza część tekstu to omówienie zawodowego życiorysu Profesora, związanego z wieloma środowiskami naukowymi

w Polsce i za granicą. Dodatkowym nurtem rozważań są osobiste spostrzeżenia autorki, której pierwsze kontakty z Profesorem sięgają już lat 80.

ubiegłego stulecia. Zacieśnienie współpracy nastąpiło od roku 2003, gdy autorka wraz z prof. Świechowskim i prof. Robertem Kunklem rozpoczęła

realizację projektu badawczego dotyczącego średniowiecznej architektury cysterskiej w Małopolsce. Konkluzją rozważań jest stwierdzenie, że

wszyscy, którzy mieli jakikolwiek kontakt z Profesorem, będą go wspominać jako wybitnego uczonego i wielkiego humanistę.

Abstract

This article is an attempt at presenting the distinguished Polish architectural historian – Professor Zygmunt Świechowski who passed away on

December 28, 2015 at the age of 95. The major part of the text regards Professor’s professional career connected with a lot of circles of scholars in

Poland and abroad. Additionally, the article presents the personal observations of the author who rst met Professor in the 1980s. They worked closer

since 2003 when together with Professor Świechowski and Professor Robert Kunkel they started the research project regarding the medieval Cister-

cian architecture in Małopolska. The conclusion of those deliberations is the statement that all those who knew Professor will remember him as an

eminent scholar and a great humanist.
