“Museum of Steam Locomotives – Steam Centre” – the best project in the ICOMOS competition 2016

Abstract

Mateusz Dołęga (Faculty of Architecture, Wrocław University of Science and Technology) won the top prise in the ICOMOS international ­competition for the best master’s thesis defended in 2016. The article presents the fragment of graphic part of the diploma project, which also ­included a comprehensive textual design. The key issue of the project was revalorization and extension of a historical complex of railway buildings in Piła. They are designed for a museum of steam locomotives “Steam Centre” with a space for exhibitions and education. What is more, in half-round ­locomotive shed visitors can explore existing workshop where steam locomotives are repaired and reconstructed. The attractiveness of the museum is diversified by: presentations of working steam locomotives on the outside turntable, rides with historical rolling stock and demonstrations of preparing steam locomotives to use.
