Abstract

The article examines the role of the local community in the revalorisation of a historic monument and the revitalisation of a settlement through the case of Neratov. This small village on the Polish–Czech border lies in an area originally inhabited predominantly by a German population. Following post-war expulsions, the region and the village remained degraded for several decades. After the change of political system, grassroots initiatives led to the revitalisation of the village in conjunction with the revalorisation of its historic church.

The author’s aim was to present the history of the village’s revitalisation and the church’s revalorisation, with particular attention to the role of the local community in these processes.

The research covered the relevant literature, archival design documentation, official correspondence concerning the project and fieldwork.

The analyses confirm that local community activity offers considerable potential for protecting local historic monuments, although ongoing cooperation with heritage conservation specialists is essential. Grassroots revitalisation also appears to be a beneficial approach.
