Last year, Professor Janusz L. Dobesz celebrated his

birthday.

Janusz was born in Kraków in 1944 and as he grew up

he soaked up the atmosphere of artistic bohemia in Jama

Michalika or Piwnica pod Baranami. Those who have the

pleasure to get to know and befriend him will confirm

know that he is straightforward and expressive. This re -

sults partly from his joy of life and optimism which radia-

tes from him and is contagious for those around him, and

partly from his self-confidence and trust in his own abili-

ties. Perceived sometimes as coarse, Janusz is simply an

op timistic person with a specific sense of humor, a con-

noisseur of life, who appreciates the beauty of women

around him, the taste of exquisite meals and drinks or of

good cars. His openness attracts many friends and some

propensity for dramatization and embellishment draws

attention to him, which he perfectly handles as he enjoys

being the center of attention. He attracts extraordinary

people who are always willing to get involved in artistic

activities. He selects subjects for his research work very

carefully, stu dy ing them in depth – he does not concen-

trate on details only – which is evident in his monographs

(Polish house).

Although Janusz Dobesz was born in Kraków, he was

connected with Wrocław most of his adult life. In 1970–

1974, he studied art history and in 1974 he graduated as

master of art history at the Faculty of Philosophy and

History at the University of Wrocław. He continued his

academic career at the Institute of History of Architecture,

Art, and Technology at the Faculty of Architecture at the

Wrocław University of Technology. He received the doc-

toral degree in technical sciences in 1978. In 1979, his

Janusz urodził się w Krakowie w 1944 r. i dzięki spę-

dzo nej tam młodości przesiąkł klimatem artystycznej

bo hemy w atmosferze Jamy Michalika czy Piwnicy pod

Ba ranami. Ci, którzy mają przyjemność go znać i przyjaź-

nić się z nim, wiedzą, że podstawowymi cechami charak-

teryzującymi go są bezpośredniość i ekspresyjność. Wy -

nika to po części z radości życia i optymizmu, jakimi

emanuje Jubilat i jakimi zaraża otoczenie, a po części

z pewności siebie i wiary we własne siły. Odbierany cza-

sami jako rubaszny, jest Janusz po prostu optymistą obda-

rzonym specyficznym poczuciem humoru; koneserem

życia, doceniającym urodę otaczających go kobiet, smak

kosztowanych potraw oraz trunków czy walory dobrych

samochodów. Otwartość zjednuje mu wielu przyjaciół,

a pewna skłonność do dramatyzowania czy nadmiernego

koloryzowania skupia na nim uwagę otoczenia, z czym

doskonale sobie radzi, lubiąc być w centrum uwagi. Gro-

madzi wokół siebie ludzi nietuzinkowych, zawsze skłon-

nych do działań artystycznych. W pracy naukowej bardzo

starannie dobiera tematy badawcze, zgłębiając je wszech-

stronnie – nie skupia się jedynie na detalach – cze go do -

Choć Janusz Dobesz urodził się w Krakowie, przez

więk szość dorosłego życia związany był z Wrocławiem.

W la tach 1970–1974 studiował historię sztuki, uzyskując

w 1974 r. tytuł magistra historii sztuki na Wydziale Filo zo-

ficzno-Historycznym Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego. Swo ją

karierę naukową kontynuował w Instytucie Historii

Architektury, Sztuki i Techniki na Wydziale Architektury

Politechniki Wrocławskiej. Stopień doktora nauk technicz-

nych otrzymał w 1978 r. Za przedłożoną rozprawę doktor-

ską pt. Nurty architektury 2. połowy XIX wieku w twórczoś-

doctoral dissertation titled Nurty architektury 2. połowy

XIX wieku w twórczości Karola Lüdeckego (The Currents

Century in the

Works by Carl Lüdecke) was awarded the President of

Wro cław University of Technology Prize. He further

de ve loped his research interests during his DAAD

(Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) scholarships:

in 1978 (West Berlin, Technische Universität, Freie Uni-

ver sität) and in 1995 (Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg, Ham-

burg). His re search on the architecture of the 19

and 20

centuries, art history, and the issues connected with aes-

thetics and so cio logy was awarded in 1980 the Pre sident

of Wrocław Uni versity of Technology Prize for the achie-

vements in the area of primary sciences and in 1982 the

President of Wrocław University of Technology Prize for

the achievements in the area of research work on the

architecture of Wrocław in the 19

century. Further stud-

ies on Wrocław architecture connected with the swastika

in the Third Reich architecture resulted in 2000 in a post-

doctoral degree with distinction granted by the Minister

of In frastructure in 2002. On July 15, 2011, Janusz Do -

besz was granted the title of professor of technical scien-

ces by the President of the Republic of Poland Bronisław

Komorowski (Fig. 1). At that time he was already a mem-

ber of many Polish and foreign scientific organization,

such as SHS (Stowarzy sze nie Historyków Sztuki – Asso-

ciation of Art Historians), DO CO MOMO (Internatio -

nal Working Party for Docu men ta tion and Conservation

of Buildings, Sites and Neigh bourhoods of the Modern

Movement), ICOMOS (In ter na tional Council on Mo -

numents and Sites), Branch of the Polish Academy of

Sciences in Wrocław.

The scientific works by Professor Janusz Dobesz in -

clude tens of publications: monographs, articles and chap-

ters in books, entries in the Encyklopedia Wrocławia

(Wro cław Encyclopedia) and Leksykon Wrocławia (Wro-

cław Lexicon) (Fig. 2). His scientific interests focus on

Wrocławskiej za osiągnięcia w dziedzinie nauk podstawo-

wych oraz w 1982 r. Na gro dą Re kto ra Politech niki Wro-

cławskiej za osiągnięcia w pracach ba dawczych nad archi-

tek turą Wrocławia w XIX w. Dalsze studia nad wrocławską

architekturą spod znaku swastyki na tle bu downictwa

III Rze szy za owocowały w 2000 r. uzyskaniem habilita -

cji, wyróżnionej w 2002 r. przez Mi ni stra In frastruktu ry.

15 lip ca 2011 r. Janusz Dobesz ot rzy mał ty tuł profeso ra

nauk tech nicznych od Prezydenta Rze czy po spo litej Pol-

skiej Bronisława Komorowskie go (il. 1). W tym cza sie

był już

członkiem wielu polskich i za granicz nych organi-

zacji naukowych, w tym SHS (Sto wa rzy szenie Histo -

ryków Sztuki), DOCO MOMO (Inter na tio nal Work ing

Party for Documentation and Conser vation of Build ings,

Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Mo dern Mo ve ment),

ICOMOS (International Coun cil on Mo numents and

Sites), Oddziału Polskiej Aka demii Nauk we Wro cławiu.

Profesor Janusz Dobesz w swoim dorobku naukowym

posiada kilkadziesiąt publikacji: monografii, arty kułów

i roz działów w książkach, haseł w Encyklopedii Wrocławia

czy Leksykonie Wrocławia (il. 2). W centrum jego za in te -

re so wań ba dawczych znajdowała się architektura XIX-

i XX-wiecz na (dworce kolejowe, wieże ciśnień, szko ły)

i jej twór cy

; metaloplastyka; architektura III Rze szy. Nie -

które z pub likacji osiągnęły status pozycji ikonicznych,

jak wspomniana wyżej, podsumowująca jego wieloletnie

zainteresowanie architekturą władzy Wro cławska archi-

tektura spod znaku swastyki – książka, która stanowi

pierwszą tak szeroką próbę krytycznej analizy wrocław-

stations, water pressure towers, schools) and its creators;

me tal work; architecture of the Third Reich. Some of the

pub li cations have become iconic, e.g. earlier mentioned

which sums up his long interest in the architecture of po -

wer Wrocław architecture under the influence of the swa-

stika – the book which is the first such an in-depth critical

analysis of Wrocław architecture from the period of the

Third Reich and synthesis of dispersed information in this

respect. With a broad historical background he presents

the birth and growth of the Third Reich style in architec-

ture and art as well as shows its propaganda and ideo-

logical function. This is today the primary source of refe-

rence for all those dealing with this subject.

Janusz Dobesz is also the author of many prized satiri-

cal drawings and a noir novel titled Śmierć nadeszła nocą

(

Death came at night). His satirical story about his mili-

tary service shall be published soon.

His lectures and seminars which he had until his retire-

ment were usually monographic in nature. They pre sented

the methods of iconographic and iconological ana lysis of

a work of art as a synthetic whole of ideas and matter.

They introduced the students into the most important

issues of history of architecture, helped in defining the

no tion of style in art, especially in architecture, and out-

lining its history. Furthermore, they explained the useful-

ness of the notion of style in research work, conservation

practice and description of architecture. Other topics dis-

cussed in classes included stylistic analysis of a work of art,

history and role of the ornament, its presence and change

over time, relations between the ornament and the mate -

rial and structure, the significance when dating objects.

His knowledge combined with a sense of humor and

straightforwardness were always liked by the students

who would willingly attend his classes and want him to be

sień dla wszystkich zajmujących się tą tematyką.

Janusz Dobesz to również autor wielu nagrodzonych

rysunków satyrycznych oraz powieści noir zatytułowanej

Śmierć nadeszła nocą. W przygotowaniu jest jego prze-

śmiewcza opowieść o czasie spędzonym w wojsku.

Prowadzone przez niego aż do przejścia na emeryturę

wykłady i seminaria miały zazwyczaj charakter monogra-

ficzny. Prezentowały metody analizy ikonograficznej

i ikonologicznej, traktującej dzieło sztuki jako syntetycz-

ną całość idei i materii. Wprowadzały słuchaczy w naj-

ważniejsze zagadnienia historii architektury, pomagały

w określeniu pojęcia stylu w sztuce, zwłaszcza w archi-

tekturze, i nakreśleniu jego historii. Wyjaśniały przydat-

ność pojęcia stylu w pracy badawczej, praktyce konser-

watorskiej i opisie architektury. Innymi omawianymi

pod czas zajęć zagadnieniami były analiza stylistyczna

dzie ła sztuki, historia i rola ornamentu, jego występowa-

nie i zmiana postaci w poszczególnych epokach, relacje

po między ornamentem a materiałem i konstrukcją, zna-

czenie przy datowaniu obiektów.

Wiedza w połączeniu z poczuciem humoru i bezpo śred-

nio

ścią zjednywały mu zawsze studentów, którzy tłum nie

uczęszczali na jego zajęcia i chętnie wybierali go na pro-

motora. Opiekował się kilkunastoma pracami licencjacki-

mi, magisterskimi i doktorskimi z zakresu sztuki i historii

architektury.

Na oddawane w ręce Czytelników tomy „Architectusa”

(2 i 3/2015) składają się właśnie teksty wychowanków

pracowników Profesora Dobesza, którzy przygotowali dla

Niego artykuły wpisujące się w zakres jego zainteresowań,

a więc traktujące o zagadnieniach stylu, monumentalizmu,

architektury władzy, architektury XIX w. Sta nowią one

swoiste podziękowanie za lata pracy na Wy dziale Ar chi tek-

tury Politechniki Wrocławskiej oraz po winszowania z oka-

zji jubileuszu jego 70. urodzin.

elor’s and master’s theses as well as doctoral dissertations

in the scope of art and history of architecture.

“Architectus” (volumes 2 and 3/2015) include the texts

by Professor Dobesz’ former students and Ph.D. students

as well as friends and colleagues who prepared for him

articles about the issues within the scope of his interest,

such as style and monumentality of architecture of power,

architecture of the 19

century. They express special gra-

titude for the years of work at the Faculty of Archi tecture

at Wrocław University of Technology and congra tulations

on his 70

birthday.
