Abstract

The article discussed the role that the subsequent artistic colonies played in shaping the local colouring scheme of Szklarska Poręba. It also presents the specificity of architectural and urban complexes of the town and their relationships with the history and natural conditions of this area. The article also brought up the issue of active prevention of degradation of the character of this place which has been formed for centuries. Drawing and painting studies – artistic documentation of architectural and urban complexes in the open air – have been presented as one of the methods of getting to know these complexes and enriching own design skills and possibilities.

Góry od zawsze fascynowały człowieka, ich ogrom

i ta jemnice budziły różnego rodzaju emocje. Przyciągały

ludzi wrażliwych, pragnących wytchnienia od zgieł ku

cywilizacji, ludzi sztuki. Już od XVIII w. inspiracje górs

kim krajobrazem znajdowali tu artyści. Znane są prace

Ch.F. Nathego, S.C.Ch. Reinharda, G.D. Bergera, a tak że

niejsze XIXwieczne romantyczne malarstwo C.D. Freid

richa

czy realistyczne ujęcia krajobrazowe A. Dresslera.

Szczególnie po roku 1890, po przybyciu bra ci Carla

i Ger harta Hauptmannów wiele znanych oso bis toś ci

zwią zanych ze światem sztuki znalazło lub wzniosło

w Szklars kiej Porębie swoje domy. Wśród najważniej

szych wymienić należy Hermanna Hendricha, Wilhelma

Bolschego, Hannsa Fechnera, Annę Teichmüller, Bruna

Willego, Geor ga Reickego [1]. Ich wpływ na koloryt i kli

mat miejs cowości był tak duży, że dolina, w której za 

miesz kały te osobowości, zyskała nawet miano Doliny

Sied miu Do mów. Nie wszystkie obiekty jednak ocalały

czy zachowały swoją ówczesną formę. Dziś zobaczyć

moż na między innymi dom Hauptmannów, Hermanna

Hen dricha, Al freda Koeppena (ul. Muzealna 2) czy Sa 

bine i Georga Reicke (ul. M. Kopernika 7).

Siedziba Carla i Gerharta Hauptmannów przy obecnej

ul. 11 Listopada 23 stała się miejscem, wokół którego

utworzyła się nieformalna grupa. Zakupiony w 1890 r.

dom wiejski został przekształcony i dostosowany do po 

trzeb dwóch rodzin (il. 1a). Dobudowano piętro i szczyt

Mountains have always fascinated man, their vastness

and mysteries have aroused different kinds of emotions.

They have attracted sensitive people craving for a break

from the noise of civilization, namely people of art. As

early as in the 18

century various artists were inspired

by the mountain landscape. There are famous works by

Ch.F. Nathe, S.C.Ch. Reinhard, G.D. Berger and the sub

se quent 19

or realistic landscape paintings by A. Dressler. After the

arrival of brothers Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann in 1890,

many famous personalities connected with the world of

art found or built their houses in Szklarska Poręba. Among

the most important ones there are such artists as Hermann

Hendrich, Wilhelm Bursche, Hanns Fechner, Anna Teich

müller, Bru no Wille, Georg Reinke [1]. Their influence

on the co lour and atmosphere of this place was so great

that the valley in which these personalities lived was

called the Valley of the Seven Houses. However, not all

of these structures have survived or have been preserved

in their original form. Today we can see, among other

things, the houses of Hauptmann, Hermann Hendrich,

Alfred Koeppen (2 Museum Street) as well as the house

of Sabine and George Reicke (7 M. Kopernika Street).

The house of the Hauptmann family, which is now si 

tuated at number 23 11

Listopada Street, became a place

around which an informal group was established. A coun

try house, which was purchased in 1890, was transformed

and adapted to the needs of two families (Fig. 1a). The

next storey and the top with rooms were added, whereas

along the front a gallery was opened, thus maintaining the

regional character of the building.

z pokojami, a wzdłuż frontu otwartą galerię, zachowując

regionalny charakter obiektu.

Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje dom Hermanna Hend

richa przy ul. Muzealnej 5 (il. 1b). Budynek powstał jako

jeden z dwóch obiektów w 1903 r. – głównym była nieist

niejąca od około 1970 r. Świątynia Legend, czyli wagne

rowski Gesamkunstwerk [2, s. 106] – według projektu

ber lińskiego architekta P. Englera. W obu odnaleźć moż

na było mieszankę mistyki natury i narodowych mitów.

Charakterystyczne elementy dekoracji – końskie głowy

i smoki widoczne w elewacji ocalałego budynku – nawią

zują do symboliki nordyckich legend. Obiekty spotkały

się z ostrą krytyką i brakiem zrozumienia części ówcze

snych obywateli miasta i nie tylko.

Jednym z ważnych miejsc spotkań wyżej wymienio

nych osób i tylko ich przyjaciół – grupa skupiała znacz 

nie większą liczbę intelektualistów i artystów zamiesz 

kałych lub bywających w Szklarskiej Porębie – był Dom

do Słońca (ul. 11 Listopada 31). Obiekt stylistycznie

na wiązuje do form charakterystycznych dla ar chitek

tury tego rejonu (odwołujących się do budownictwa łu 

życ kiego, występujących w konstrukcji mieszanej, sza

de serves special attention (Fig. 1b). The building was

erected as one of two facilities put up in 1903 – the main

building was the Temple of Legends, which does not exist

since about 1970, namely Wagner’s Gesamkunstwerk

[2, p. 106] – designed by the Berliner architect P. Engler.

In both of them it was possible to find a mixture of the

mysticism of nature and national myths. Characteristic

elements of the decoration – horses’ heads and dragons

which are visible in the facade of the survived building –

refer to the symbolism of Nordic legends. The buildings

met with severe criticism and a lack of understanding from

part of the con temporary citizens of the town and not only

from them.

One of the important meeting places of the above men

tioned persons and only their friends – the group consi

sted of a much greater number of intellectuals and artists

living or staying in Szklarska Poręba – was To The Sun

House (No 31 11

Listopada Street). The building sty

listically refers to forms characteristic of architecture of

this region (referring to the Lusatian type of building

occurring in mixed construction, wattle and daub or post

chul cowej lub przysłupowozrębowej z dwuspadowym

da chem) i wykonany jest z miejscowych materiałów

(drewno, kamień) (il. 1c, d).

W regionie związanym ze Szklarską Porębą także

nieco później powstawały kolonie artystów i intelek tua

listów. Jedną z najważniejszych było zawiązane w 1922 r.

Stowarzyszenie Artystyczne Twórców św. Łukasza. Goś

cinną siedzibę grupa znalazła w wyremontowanym tar

taku położonym nad potokiem Kamieńczyk, przy

ul. 1 Ma ja 16 (il. 2). Obiekt częściowo strawiony przez

pożar został gruntownie przebudowany latach 1920–

1922. Nawiązywał w stylu do miejscowej architektury

ludowej, a pracami przy nim kierował radca budowlany

F.E. Schumann. W literaturze przedmiotu tak ocenio

no efekt przeprowadzonych działań: Architekt posługu

jąc się cytatami z regionalnej tradycji architektonicz nej

– ka mień granitowy, mur pruski, wysokie dwuspa do

we da chy ze szczytami pokrytymi drewnem – stworzył

malowniczy zes pół, który jeszcze dziś jest dominantą

w ob razie miasta [2, s. 122]. Po zakończeniu prac adapta

cyjnych właściciel obiektu – dawnego tartaku przemia

nowanego na Młyn Św. Łukasza – E. Topfer udostęp

nił bract wu salę na pierwszą wystawę nowo powstałej

grupy. Na parterze mieś ciła się winiarnia (miejsce spo

tkań i debat), na piętrze sala wystawowa, a na poddaszu

pokoje gościnne.

Obecność przedstawicieli sztuki, nauki i kultury pozo

stawiła ślady w przestrzeni nie tylko fizycznej Szklars

kiej Poręby [2], [3]. Trudno dociec, czy sprawia to magia

miejsca – np. Dolina Siedmiu Domów jest usytuowana

na nie typowym po tej stronie gór południowym stoku

– czy Duch Gór spersonifikowany przez przedstawi 

cieli ko lonii artystycznej skupionej wokół braci Haupt

mannów. To coś – genius loci – jest tu obecne i sprawia,

że także po 1945 r. okolica ta jest świadkiem osiedla

nia się tutaj kolejnej, tym razem w przewadze polskiej,

fali artystów i intelektualistów spragnionych odosobnie

nia, obcowa nia z in s pirującą naturą, ale również kontak

tów z in nymi ludźmi sztuki (mówi się o kolejnych kolo

niach artys tycznych).

from local materials (wood, stone) (Fig. 1c, d).

Also some time later colonies of artists and intellectu

als were built in the region which was connected with

Szklarska Poręba. One of the most important was the

Artistic Society of St Luke Artists established in 1922. The

group found its guest house in a renovated sawmill which

was located by the Kamieńczyk Stream at No 16 1 Maja

Street (Fig. 2). The building, which was partially destroyed

in a fire, was thoroughly reconstructed in the years 1920–

1922. In its style it referred to the local folk architecture

and the building works were supervised by construction

advisor F.E. Schumann. The effect of the conducted works

was evaluated in literature in the following way: The

architect using quotations from the regional ar ch itectu ral

tradition – granite stone, timber framing, high gable roofs

with tops covered with wood – created a picturesque com

plex, which even today is a prominent feature in the town

scape [2, p. 122]. After completion of ada ptation works

the owner of the building – a former saw mill changed to

St Luke Mill – E. Topfer made the hall available for the

fraternity to organise the first exhibition of the newly

established group. The ground floor housed a winery

(a place for meetings and debates), on the first floor there

was an exhibition hall and guest rooms were in the attic.

The presence of representatives of art, science and cul

ture left traces not only in the physical space of Szklarska

Poręba [2], [3]. It is difficult to figure out whether the

magic of the place makes it so special – for example, the

Valley of the Seven Houses is located on the southern

hillside which is so unusual on this side of the mountains

– or the Mountain Spirit personified by representatives of

the artistic colony led by the Hauptmann brothers. This

something – genius loci – is present here and results in the

fact that also after 1945 this area has become a witness to

the process of settlement of the next, this time predomi

nantly Polish, wave of artists and intellectuals who not

only looked for solitude and communion with inspiring

nature, but also for contacts with other people of art (fur

ther artistic colonies are discussed).

Region sudecki geograficznie usytuowany jest na po 

graniczu polskoniemieckoczeskim. Od wieków śred

nich był obszarem, który podlegał wpływom różnorod

nych kultur, a zmienne dzieje polityczne i ekonomiczne

Dolnego Śląska wpisały w bogaty krajobraz Sudetów

Za chodnich i ich Pogórza skupiska osadnicze z intere su

ją cy mi zespołami architektonicznourbanistycznymi.

Jednym z nich jest Szklarska Poręba, której układ prze

strzenny wy nika z dostosowania zabudowy do korzyst

nych na tural nych warunków zróżnicowanego ukształto

wania te re nu, układu cieków wodnych i uwarunkowań

klimatycznych. Pierwotne budownictwo ludowe/re gional

ne wy wodzi się bezpośrednio z wielowiekowej tra dy cji

bu downictwa łu życkiego, występuje przeważnie w wer sji

kon strukcji mie szanej, szachulcowej lub przysłupowo

zrębowej (po cho dzą ce z XVIII i XIX w.) z dwuspado

wym dachem o na chy le niu połaci 50–55

szczególne ce chy zostały udokumentowane w op ra co

waniach wykony wa nych na Wydziale Ar chitek tu ry Poli

techniki Wroc ławskiej już w latach 80. XX w. i w ok resie

późniejszym [4]–[6]. Różnorodne wpływy, jakim ulegała

tutejsza architektura jeszcze przed obiema wojnami świa

towymi, pozwalają na wyróżnienie określonych typów,

takich jak m.in.: dom wiejskiwilla, domwilla o cechach

rodzimych, dom z elementami architektury obcej (tyrol

The Sudeten region is geographically located on the

PolishGermanCzech border. Since the Middle Ages it

was an area influenced by different cultures and the chan

ging political and economic history of Lower Silesia

brought into the rich landscape of Western Sudety and the

Foothills, settlements with interesting architectural and

urban complexes. One of them is Szklarska Poręba whose

spatial arrangement results from the adaptation of build

ing development to favourable natural conditions of land

relief, watercourse systems and climatic conditions. The

original folk/regional architecture derives directly from

manycentury tradition of Lusatian construction and it

usually appears in a version of mixed, wattle and daub or

postandbeam construction (dating back to the 18

and

centuries) with a gable roof of 50–55

inclination,

which makes the architectural character of this region

very specific (Fig. 3). Its characteristics features were

presented in the studies which were carried out at the Fa 

culty of Architecture of the Wrocław University of Tech

no lo gy in the 1980

and in later years [4]–[6]. Various

influences, which local architecture underwent before the

two world wars, make it possible to distinguish specific

types of buildings such as a villa farmhouse, a housevilla

with native features, a house with elements of foreign

architecture (Tyrolean, Swiss, Scandinavian) (Fig. 4). The

by A. Herzig: The image of the Giant Mountains cultural

landscape, apart from its old farmhouses and shelters of

rural settlements, was mainly created by the following

three styles: Ba roque and Rococo, romanticizing Neo

Gothic and in the 20

century neorealism buildings

along with Art Nouveau [7, p. 26]. Urban systems, which

develop naturally, have an influence on the undoubted

uniqueness of the local landscape. Often in their central

part there are sacral buildings. This situation can be obse

rved in Lower Szklarska Poręba. The local Immaculate

Heart of Mary Filial Church – originally Evangelical –

was erected according to Ch. Feistes design in the years

1754–1786 [3] (Fig. 5). On the western side a Classicistic

tower with a Baroque dome was added in 1821. In the

urban layout it is an important element – a dominant mer

ging the arrangement of the picturesque valley. Until the

beginning of July 2015 it was accompanied by an inn

building (probably from the same period).

Generalizing, it should be stressed that the architec

tural forms, which were developed in these areas along

with their specific characteristics and proportions, applied

structures and local materials and combined them into

larger architectural and urban complexes immersed in

the mountain landscape, thus creating a special colour ing

and making the Sudeten region’s beauty uniquely out

standing.

skiej, szwajcarskiej, skandynawskiej) (il. 4). Zróżnicowa

nie form zabudowy dobrze opisuje tak że A. Herzig:

Obraz karkonoskiego krajobrazu kulturowego tworzyły

obok odwiecznych zagród i schronisk osiedli wiejs kich

głównie trzy style: barokoworokokowy, romantyzujący

neogotyk i w XX w. obok secesji budowle neorealizmu [7,

s. 26]. Na niewątpliwą niepowtarzalność miejs cowego

pejzażu mają wpływ naturalnie rozwijające się układy

urbanistyczne. Często w ich centrum znajdują się obiekty

sakralne. Taką sytuację mamy w Szklarskiej Porębie Dol

nej. Tamtejszy kościół filialny pw. Niepokalanego Serca

Najświętszej Marii Panny – pierwotnie ewangelicki –

wzniesiony został w latach 1754–1786 według projektu

Ch. Feistesa [3] (il. 5). W 1821 r. dobudowano do niego

od strony zachodniej klasycystyczną wieżę z barokowym

hełmem. W układzie urbanistycznym jest istotnym ele

mentem – dominantą spinającą kompozycję malowniczej

doliny. Do początku lipca 2015 r. towarzyszył mu budy

nek gospody (prawdopodobnie z tego samego okresu).

Uogólniając, należy podkreślić, że wykształcone na

tych terenach formy architektury o określonych cechach

i pro porcjach, zastosowanych konstrukcjach i lokalnych

ma teriałach, połączone w większe zespoły architektonicz

nourbanistyczne zanurzone w górskim pejzażu, tworzyły

szczególny koloryt i stanowiły o niezwykłej urodzie re 

gionu sudeckiego.

Trudna sytuacja związana z przesunięciem granic i wy 

mianą mieszkańców po II wojnie światowej, napływem

ludzi pochodzących z wielu różnych terenów dawnej

Pols ki, którzy przywozili ze sobą własny bagaż do świad

czeń i tradycji, przyniosła w rezultacie zastój w roz woju

architektury sudeckiej, a nawet ruinę wielu war toś

ciowych obiektów (co w zaistniałych warunkach mog ło

być zrozumiałe). Zagadnienia związane z pojęciami ar 

chitektura rodzima, regionalna, tradycyjna czy swojs ka

na terenach, które zostały włączone do Polski po 1945 r.,

budziły wiele kontrowersji jeszcze na początku lat 80.

mi nionego wieku [8]. Nie można było stosować ich

w spo sób jednoznaczny, tak jak w przypadku architektury

Pod hala. Wymiana doświadczeń i poglądów z innymi oś 

rodkami naukowymi zaowocowała jednak projektem

Karty Sudeckiej odnoszącej się do zasad projektowania

architektury na terenach regionu sudeckiego [4], [9]–[11].

W tym okresie chodziło nie tylko o ratowanie zacho

wanych wartościowych, historycznych obiektów, ale tak

że o próbę zapanowania nad rozprzestrzeniającym się

bu downictwem chaotycznym, zunifikowanym i wprowa

dzającym rozwiązania o formach obcych i estetycznie

wątpliwych.

Choć możemy już teraz mówić o architekturze „oswo

jonej” – większość mieszkańców albo wrosła w nową

A difficult situation connected with reestablishing

boun daries and exchanging inhabitants after World

War II, then the influx of people coming from many dif

ferent areas of former Poland who brought their own

baggage of experience and tradition, resulted in stagna

tion in the development of the Sudeten architecture

and even in the ruin of many valuable objects (which

could be understandable in these conditions). The issues

related to the concepts of native, regional, traditional or

folk architecture in the areas which were incorporated

into Poland in 1945, aroused a lot of controversy still at

the beginning of the 1980

[8]. It was not possible to use

them in an unambiguous manner as it was in the case of

the Podhale architecture. However, the exchange of expe

riences and ideas with other research centers resulted in

the Sudeten Char ter Project relating to the principles of

designing architecture in the areas of the Sudeten region.

At that time, it was not only about saving preserved valu

able and historical buildings but also about attempting to

control the spread of chaotic and unified construction

development which introduced solutions including fore

ign and aesthetically questionable forms.

Although we now can talk about “tame” architecture

– the majority of residents either have grown into a once

new reality or having been born here treat it like their own

niegdyś rzeczywistość, albo tutaj urodzona traktuje ją jak

własną – to niebezpieczeństwo utraty niepowtarzalnego

charakteru tego miejsca nie minęło. Po około 30 latach od

przeprowadzenia badań przez zespół prof. Tadeusza Bie

siekierskiego pejzaż Szklarskiej Poręby uległ zmianie.

Z pewnością wielu obiektom o interesującej architektu 

rze wyrosłej z tradycji tego obszaru przywrócono daw 

ną świet ność, ale pojawiły się inne zagrożenia związane

z kon sekwencjami przemian w życiu społecznym, po 

lityce i eko nomii. Szklarska Poręba to teren o sporym

po tencjale ze względu na rozwój turystyki i sportu. Prak

tycznie całoroczna możliwość osiągania zysków z roz bu

dowy wanej bez kontroli bazy wczasowoturystycznej –

w po staci kolosalnych „machin” hotelowych, apartamen

towców, ko lej nych marketów czy parkingów tworzonych

kosztem wy bu rzanej zabytkowej spuścizny architek

tonicznourbanis tycznej tego rejonu – to łakomy kąsek

dla wielu in wes to rów. Obszar Szklarskiej Poręby ulega

zmianom i bu dzą się wątpliwości co do kierunku tych

zmian. Administracja państwowa powinna kontrolować

i zapobiegać niepożądanym zjawiskom. Ale czy jej się

to udaje?

Decyzje projektowe podejmują często osoby z różnych

miejsc Polski, na odległość, bez zapoznania się bezpo

średnio z walorami miejsca. Świadome i odpowiedzialne

działanie wymaga wiedzy, umiejętności i wyczucia –

przede wszystkim od architektów. Rezultaty błędnie pod

jętych decyzji na stałe oszpecą tę i każdą inną przez stu

lecia harmonijnie kształtującą się przestrzeń. Rola eduka

cji uniwersyteckiej w tym zakresie wydaje się nie do

podważenia. Z jednej strony potrzebne są wykłady i kursy

projektowe z zakresu znajomości zagadnień architektury

regionalnej, z drugiej zaś kształcenie plastyczne jako po 

znawanie zasad kompozycji, proporcji i relacji, formy

w praktyce. Plenery malarskie i rysunkowe w takich in 

teresujących miejscach jak Szklarska Poręba powinny

być jedną z podstawowych form kształcenia przyszłych

ar chitektów. Wiąże się to z prawidłowościami zachodzą 

cymi w procesach poznawczych i procesach uczenia się

– bezpośrednie doświadczenie zmysłowe w połączeniu

z ak tyw nością umysłową i fizyczną jest doskonałą po 

mocą w kształtowaniu wrażliwości, wyobraźni, wspie ra

kreację. Juliusz Żórawski pisał kiedyś o „gromadzeniu

słusznych doznań” [12]–[14]. Rysunkowe lub ma larskie

utrwalanie rzeczywistości w bezpośrednim kon takcie to

wzbogacanie własnego bagażu doświadczeń, któ re są

Inspiracje zaczerpnięte z natury są nie do zastąpienia, ich

wszelkiego rodzaju interpretacje pozwalają na twórczą

kontynuację w nawiązaniu do tego samego ob szaru lub

poza nim. Nie chodzi przecież o bezrefleksyjne naśla

downictwo.

Mieszanie się rozmaitych wpływów pochodzących

cza sem z odległych obszarów na tym terenie zaowoco

wało kiedyś spójnym obrazem współistniejących i jakoś

dopełniających się przestrzennie form. Aby ten stan

ut rzymać, należy dbać o właściwą kulturę projektową

i ety kę projektantów oraz władz administracyjnych – nie

od wszyst kich sponsorów przecież można domagać się

choćby podstawowej wiedzy na ten temat.

search by Professor Tadeusz Biesiekierski’s team was

carried out Szklarska Poręba landscape has changed. Cer

tainly, many objects with interesting architecture which

originated from the tradition of this region regained their

former glory. However, there have appeared other risks

connected with consequences of changes in the social life,

politics and economics. Szklarska Poręba constitutes an

area of a considerable potential due to the development of

tou rism and sports. A practically all year round opportuni

ty to make profits from the holiday and tourism base that

has been developing without any control – in the form

of a colossal hotel “machine”, apartment buildings, more

and more supermarkets or car parks which have been built

at the expense of the demolished historical archi tectural

and urban heritage of the area – is a real “treat” for nume

rous investors. Szklarska Poręba is changing, however,

doubts about the direction of these changes have been

aroused. The state administration should control and pre

vent undesirable phenomena. But is it succeeding in

doing this?

Design decisions are often taken by people from diffe

rent parts of Poland, at a distance, without getting famil

iarised directly with the values of the site. Conscious and

responsible action requires knowledge, skills and intu

ition – first of all from architects. The results of mistaken

ly taken decisions will disfigure for ever this space and all

other spaces which have been harmoniously shaped for

centuries. The role of university education in this regard

seems unquestionable here. On the one hand, lectures and

designing courses in the range of the knowledge about

regional architecture issues are required, while on the

other hand artistic education as the way of learning the

rules of composition, proportions and relationships as

well as forms in practice. Open air painting and drawing

workshops in such interesting places as Szklarska Poręba

should be one of the fundamental forms of education of

future architects. This involves regula rities which take

place in cognitive processes and processes of learning –

a direct sensual experience combi ned with mental and

physical activity constitutes a great support for the forma

tion of sensitivity and imagination and it also supports

creation. Juliusz Żórawski once wrote about “accumula

ting proper experiences” [12]–[14]. Preservation of the

reality in the form of drawings or paintings in direct

contact leads to the enrichment of one’s own baggage of

experiences which in turn become invaluable in later

design processes. Inspirations drawn from nature are irre

placeable and all kinds of their interpretations allow for

creative continuation in relation to the same area or be 

yond it. Surely, we do not mean thoughtless imitation.

A mixture of diversified influences coming sometimes

from remote areas once resulted in a coherent image of

forms which coexisted and somehow complemented one

another spatially in this region. In order to continue this

phenomenon, design culture and ethics of designers as

well as administrative authorities must play an important

role here since we cannot require even a basic knowledge

about this issue from all sponsors.

język międzynarodowy. Czy te nieformalne grupy będą

miały siłę i moc sprawczą, aby zapobiegać niekorzystnym

dla tego regionu tendencjom?

Na początku lipca 2015 w Szklarskiej Porębie odbył się

plener rysunkowomalarski i fotograficzny, w którym brali

udział studenci Wydziału Architektury Politechni ki Wro

cławskiej. Pomysł zorganizowania pleneru ma związek

z roz poczęciem działalności Willi Hendricha w ra mach pro

jektu pt. „Odremontowana willa Hendricha w Szklar skiej

Porębie punktem międzynarodowych spotkań odkrywa

jących walory kulturowe, historyczne i spo łecznogos po 

darcze pogranicza”, współfinansowanego przez Unię

Eu ropejską ze środków Europejskiego Fun du szu Rozwoju

Re gional nego w ramach Programu Ope racyjnego Współ

pracy Trans gra nicznej Polska–Sak sonia 2007–2013 [16].

Tematem pleneru była dokumentacja szeroko pojmo

wanego krajobrazu architektonicznourbanistycznego

The phenomenon of the Giant Mountains on the border

of Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany along with

their magnetic impact are conducive to the formation of

en claves for a widely understood artistic exchange at

a European scale [2], [15]. After all, art is an international

language. Will these informal groups have the power and

driving force to prevent unfavourable trends for this region?

At the beginning of July 2015 in Szklarska Poręba

pleinair painting, drawing and photography took place,

which was attended by students of the Faculty of Archi

tecture of the Wrocław University of Technology. The

idea of organizing pleinair painting is related to the

commen cement of Hendrich Villa’s activity within the

framework of the project entitled “Reconstructed Hen

drich’s Villa in Szklarska Poręba as an international meet

ing point for discovering the cultural, historical and socio

econo mic values of the frontier”, which was cofinanced

by the Euro pean Union from the funds of the European

Regio nal Development Fund within the framework of

the Operational Programme of Transboundary Poland–

Sa xony Cooperation 2007–2013 [16].

Streszczenie

W artykule omówiono rolę, jaką w kształtowaniu lokalnego kolorytu Szklarskiej Poręby odegrały kolejne kolonie artystyczne. Przedstawiono też

specyfikę zespołów architektonicznourbanistycznych miasta oraz ich związek z historią i naturalnymi uwarunkowaniami tego obszaru. Poruszony

został również temat aktywnego zapobiegania degradacji uformowanego przez stulecia charakteru tego miejsca. Studia rysunkowe i malarskie

The topic of the pleinair painting was the documenta

tion of the widely understood architectural and urban

landscape in its most valuable range – the heritage of

forms preserved for years in the western part of the Sude

ten region

The illustrations presented in the article constitute

a small collection of works created during the pleinair

activities. Most of them shall be exhibited in Hendrich’s

Villa and perhaps even in this way they will become a part

of the glorious artistic tradition of this place, and maybe

also of the contemporary artistic environment of Szklars

ka Poręba. We also hope that thanks to these experiences

future architects will be able to understand better the

existing heritage and treat it with respect, and thus – more

harmoniously develop their future projects in the archi

tectural space of the already existing urban and architec

tural complexes (Fig. 6).

Ilustracje przedstawione w artykule to niewielki zbiór

prac wykonanych w trakcie pleneru. Znaczna ich część

eksponowana będzie w Willi Hendricha i może choćby

w ten sposób wpisze się w chlubną artystyczną tradycję

tego miejsca, a może i współczesnego środowiska arty

stycznego Szklarskiej Poręby. Mamy także nadzieję, że

dzięki tym doświadczeniom przyszli architekci lepiej

będą rozumieć zastane dziedzictwo i podchodzić do niego

z szacunkiem, a co za tym idzie – bardziej harmonijnie

wpisywać swoje przyszłe projekty w przestrzeń architek

toniczną istniejących już zespołów urbanistycznoarchi

tektonicznych (il. 6).

Abstract

The article discussed the role that the subsequent artistic colonies played in shaping the local colouring scheme of Szklarska Poręba. It also presents

the specificity of architectural and urban complexes of the town and their relationships with the history and natural conditions of this area.

The article also brought up the issue of active prevention of degradation of the character of this place which has been formed for centuries. Drawing

and painting studies – artistic documentation of architectural and urban complexes in the open air – have been presented as one of the methods of

getting to know these complexes and enriching own design skills and possibilities.
