Abstract

The article presents the history of the creation and transformation of the parish church in Szprotawa from 13th until the 20th century. The introduction discusses the source references and the accesible literature – in a small extent discussing the evolution of the temple architecture. Based on architectural studies and details analyses, the most important phases of the church’s transformation have been identified. The origins of the building were erected in the 2nd half of the 13th century, when a temple composed of a rectangular choir and a three-span nave was erected. Probably in the 1st half of the 14th century, a tower with a chapel on the ground floor was built by the northern wall and in the middle of the century, the body was extended from the south by three chapels and a porch in front of the northern entrance. The 2nd half of the 14th century brought the creation of a porch connecting the church with the Madeleine convent. The highest storey of the tower with blanking was built in the middle of the 15th century. The construction of the present three-nave seven-bay hall structure without a separate choir with a polygonal bypass and vaults and a two-tiered sacristy was probably carried out in the years 1474–1488. After this year, two chapels: of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Passion of the Lord were built by the south elevation, and at the northern one – the Holy Cross chapel. And in 1516 the following were built: Gethsemane, Dungeon and Detenction, and a lodge for the Madeleine sisters. The Renaissance transformations included narrowing of the entrance to the chapel on the ground floor of the tower, and the Baroque changes – a new interior decoration of the Holy Cross chapel, breaking through for the present entrance on the axis of the main nave, building the organ’s choir and the new tower’s helmet. In the middle of the 19th century, the decoration of the gable was changed and the western porch was introduced.

nego. Wzniesiono go na położonym na południe od Ryn

ku i ratusza placu Kościelnym – będącym pozostałością

dawnego cmentarza otaczającego świątynię

Opis kościoła

Orientowana bryła kościoła składa się z trójnawowe go

siedmioprzęsłowego korpusu bez wydzielonego prezbite-

rium, wieży po stronie północnej na wysokości trzeciego

i czwartego przęsła (licząc od zachodu) oraz przylegającej

do niej zakrystii. Wzdłuż ściany południowej założono ot 

wierające się do wnętrza nawy bocznej dwie kaplice (od

wscho du Matki Boskiej Bolesnej i Męki Pańskiej) oraz

przed sionek

z kaplicami: Ogrójcem, Karcerem i Ciem nicą.

Kolejna kaplica pw. Świętego Krzyża przylega do za 

chodniej elewacji wieży i połączona jest półkolistą arkadą

z nawą północną. Przed wejściami umiesz czo no dwie

kruchty, jedną w osi elewacji zachodniej i drugą pomię-

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish

Church in Szprotawa

is situated in the southern part of

the location town. It was erected on the Church square

south of the Market Square and the Town Hall – a remnant

of the former cemetery which surrounded the church

The description of the church

The oriented body of the church consists of a seven

bay corpus with a nave and two aisles without a separate

presbytery, a tower on the northern side at a height of the

third and fourth bays (counting from the west) and the

adjacent sacristy. Along the southern wall, two chapels

were opened to the interior of the aisle (from the east of

Our Lady of Sorrows and Passion of the Lord) and the

vestibule with the chapels named as Gethsemane, Solitary

Confinement Cell and Altar of Repose. The next Holy

Cross Chapel adjoins the west facade of the tower and is

connected by a semicircular arcade with the northern

aisle. There are two porches in front of the entrances, one

in the axis of the western facade and the other between the

tower and the sacristy. The body along with the presbytery

were covered with a multipitched roof enclosed by a tri-

angular gable with lancet and fourfield recesses on the

western side, and in a polygonal way on the eastern. The

szczytem trójkątnym z wnękami ostrołucznymi i czte ro 

polo wymi, a od wschodu – wielobocznie. Za kry stia, ka 

pli ce oraz kruchta północna otrzymały dachy pulpitowe,

a kruchta zachodnia – dach dwuspadowy. Wieżę zwień

czono krytym blachą barokowym hełmem z cebulką z jed-

nym prześwitem (il. 1).

Korpus z prezbiterium ukształtowano jako siedmio-

przęsłową, trójnawową halę zamkniętą od wschodu wie

lobocznym ambitem (obejściem). Trzy nawy wydzielo

no ścianami arkadowymi opartymi na ośmiobocznych

filarach. Na nich rozpięto sklepienia, które w nawach otrzy

mały dekorację sieciową, w chórze – trójpolową, a w obej-

ściu mieszaną, w każdym przęśle inną: krzyżową, krzy żo

wotrójpolową

i trójpolową (il. 2a, b). Wnętrze oś wiet lono

wysokimi ostrołucznymi oknami, chór sześ cio ma od

wschodu, a korpus – trzema od południa i jednym od za 

chodu. Pozbawione otworów okiennych jest przęsło za 

chodnie (il. 3).

Przylegające do korpusu kaplice, chór magdalenek,

za krystia oraz przedsionki otrzymały sklepienia o zróż ni

co wanym układzie. W kaplicach południowych oraz na

piętrze na chórze założono krzyżowe, w zakrystii i po miesz

czeniu nad nią oraz w obu kruchtach – krzyżowożebro

we,

w Ogrójcu – krzyżowosieciowe, a w neogotyc kiej kruch

cie

zachodniej – gwiaździste. Barokowa kaplica Świętego

Krzyża nakryta została kolebą z lunetami, a Ciem ni ca – ko 

lebą. Dwie kaplice wzdłuż elewacji południowej obecnie

monopitched roofs, and the western vestibule – a gable

roof. The tower was crowned with a baroque copula with

one clearance covered with an onion shaped dome and

then with sheet metal (Fig. 1).

The body with the presbytery was shaped as a seven

bay, onenave, twoaisled hall closed by a multisided

ambulatory from the east (covered passage). The nave

and aisles were separated by arcaded walls supported by

octagonal pillars. On them there are vaults which in the

aisles received the network decoration, in the gallery – the

threefield decoration, and mixed decoration in the pas-

sage, and in each bay different decoration, i.e. cross, cross

and threefield as well as threefield (Fig. 2a, b). The inte-

rior was lighted with high lancet windows, the gallery

with six windows from the east, and the body – three from

the south and one from the west. The western bay is

devoid of window openings (Fig. 3).

The chapels adjoining the body, the gallery of the

Madeleines, the sacristy and the vestibules received vaults

of various layouts. In the southern chapels and on the first

floor in the gallery there were cross vaults, in the sacristy

and in the room above it as well as in both vestibules –

crossrib vaults, in the Gethsemane – a crossnet vault,

and in the western neoGothic vestibule – a stellar one.

The baroque chapel of the Holy Cross was covered with

a barrel vault with lunettes, and the Altar of Repose with

a barrel vault. Two chapels are currently devoid of win-

dows in the basement along the southern facade. Today,

the Gethsemane has two partially blocked lancet arcades

and the former Madeleines’ lodge which is located above

it has two semicircular holes enclosed in profiled frames

(Fig. 4). Similar windows illuminate the Świętokrzyska

Chapel. Narrow rectangular clearances with stone frames

were situated in the basement of the sacristy, whereas the

first floor has small three lancet holes with splays.

The division of the tower levels is determined by

wooden ceilings. At present, the lowest level performs the

function of a facility room. The first level with the ceiling

is located at a height of approximately +9.0 m, another at

a height of the entrance to the church attic +13.2, on the

third one +18.4 – there are bells, the fourth one +26.2 is

illuminated by one window from the south, and the last

one +31.0 is placed just under the copula.

The facade of the church consists of brickwork, stone

and architectural details which are exposed in the face.

The western facade in the northern and central part con-

tains a stone facade of the original church with a blocked

lancet portal with splayed jambs and an oculus. In the

southern brick part, a lancet window is preserved with

a blind window of a similar pattern. Corners of the facade

and the southern edge of the exposed stone face are sur-

rounded by buttresses. The finial of the facade is a gable

with variable geometry and a decoration composed of two

lancet and rectangular fourfield blind windows divided

by a Latin cross, between which two frieze panels were

designed (Fig. 1).

The rhythm of the four bays of the southern facade

within the body is marked by buttresses and lancet win-

dows between them, except for the westernmost one,

where there are two lancet blind windows. The lower part

pozbawione są okien w przyziemiu. Ogrójec ma dwie częś

ciowo zablokowane dziś ostrołuczne arkady, a znajdu

ją ca się nad nim dawna loża magdalenek – dwa półkolis te

otwory ujęte w profilowane opaski (il. 4). Po dobne okna

do świetlają kaplicę Świę tokrzyską. Wąskie prostokątne prze

świty z kamiennymi obramieniami zlo ka li zo wano

w przy

ziemiu zakrystii, natomiast piętro ma nie wiel kie, trzy ostro-

łuczne otwory o rozglifionych ościeżach.

Podział poziomów wieży wyznaczają drewniane stro-

py. Najniższy pełni obecnie funkcję pomieszczenia go 

spodarczego. Pierwszy poziom ze stropem znajduje się na

wysokości około +9,0 m, kolejny na wysokości wejścia

na strych kościoła +13,2, na trzecim +18,4 – zawieszone są

dzwony, czwarty +26,2 oświetla jedno okno od po łudnia,

a ostatni +31,0 umieszczony jest tuż pod hełmem.

Na wystrój elewacji kościoła składają się eksponowa-

ne w licu wątki ceglane i kamienne oraz detal architekto-

niczny. Fasada zachodnia w północnej i środkowej partii

zawiera kamienną elewację pierwotnego kościoła z zablo-

kowanymi ostrołucznym uskokowym portalem i okulu-

sem. W partii południowej, ceglanej zachowane jest

ostrołuczne okno wraz z blendą o zbliżonym wykroju.

Narożniki elewacji oraz krawędź południową ekspono-

wanego lica kamiennego opinają przypory. Zwieńczenie

fasady stanowi szczyt o zmiennej geometrii z dekoracją

złożoną z dwóch kondygnacji ostrołucznych i prostokąt-

nych czteropolowych blend dzielonych krzyżem łaciń-

skim, pomiędzy którymi zakomponowano dwie płyciny

fryzowe (il. 1).

Rytm czterech przęseł elewacji południowej w zasięgu

korpusu wyznaczają przypory i umieszczone między nimi

ostrołuczne okna, poza skrajnym zachodnim, gdzie są

dwie ostrołuczne blendy. Dolną partię przęsła trzeciego,

licząc od zachodu, wypełnia niewielka kaplica z wnęką

chapel with a recess covered with a segmented arch. At

the height of the gallery, a smooth facade of the annexe

with, Solitary Confinement Cell, Altar of Repose, Geth 

semane and the choir of Madeleines were designed. In the

basement, its southern wall is decorated with lancet

entrance openings enclosed in the plaster frame, above

there is a stone cornice and on the first floor there are

semicircular windows in plaster frames. In the eastern

wall there is a semicircular entrance and a blocked recess

next to it, whereas above there is a blocked embrasure

opening which is covered with an ogee arch (Fig. 4).

The facade of the polygonal passage of the gallery,

however, has a very regular layout. It consists of buttress-

es with three splayed jambs which designate six bays. On

their axes, there are lancet windows which at present are

set on the removed dripstone cornice. The crowning of the

facade is formed by a cornice and a strip of frieze panels

separated in the party over the buttresses. The composi-

tion is completed by a concave profile plinth (Fig. 5).

The northern facade has a very simple detail. The

extreme western bay of the body is devoid of decor except

for the frieze panel in the under eaves part and the sand-

stone dripstone cornice (currently removed). The smooth

surfaces of the walls of the Holy Cross Chapel are deco-

rated only by two semicircular windows and in the half

gable part there are two stripes of rectangular niches

which are divided by Latin crosses. The corner of walls is

supported by a buttress with a blocked niche. In the north-

ern wall we can see a walledup portal and a high lancet

window above it. A similar blocked hole can be seen from

the west (Fig. 6).

The lower stone part of the tower body has no detail

except for a grave stone slab of prebendary Berthold from

na krytą łękiem odcinkowym. Na wysokości chóru zakom-

ponowano gładką elewację przybudówki z kaplicami:

Kar cerem, Ciemnicą, Ogrójcem oraz chórem magdalenek.

Jej ścianę południową dekorują w przyziemiu ostrołuczne

otwory wejściowe ujęte w tynkowe opaski, powyżej gzyms

kamienny, a na piętrze półkoliste okna w tynkowych obra-

mieniach. W ścianie wschodniej umieszczono półk oliste

wejście, obok zablokowaną wnękę, a powyżej roz glifiony

zablokowany otwór nakryty oślim łękiem (il. 4).

Bardzo regularny układ ma natomiast elewacja wielo-

bocznego obejścia chóru. Tworzą ją trójuskokowe przypory

wyznaczające sześć przęseł. W ich osiach umieszczono

ostrołuczne okna, które ustawiono na obecnie skutym gzym-

sie okapnikowym. Zwieńczenie elewacji tworzy gzyms i pas

płycin fryzowych rozdzielonych w partii nad przyporami.

Kompozycję uzupełnia cokół o wklęsłym profilu (il. 5).

Bardzo skromny detal ma elewacja północna. Skrajne

zachodnie przęsło korpusu pozbawione jest wystroju

poza płyciną fryzową w partii podokapowej i piaskowco-

wego gzymsu odkapnikowego (obecnie skutego). Gładkie

płaszczyzny ścian kaplicy Świętego Krzyża dekorują

jedynie dwa półkoliste okna, a w partii półszczytu dwa

pasy prostokątnych wnęk dzielonych krzyżami łaciński-

mi. Narożnik ścian wspiera przypora z zablokowaną

wnęką. W ścianie północnej widoczne są zamurowane:

body cornice there is a step and a lancet niche with a win-

dow above it. The next two already brick floors accentu-

ate three lancet blind windows in the lower floor, whereas

in the upper – two similar niches flanking the window.

The facades are crowned with a cornice at the base of the

copula, under which there are square windows illuminat-

ing the last floor (Fig. 7).

On the eastern side of the tower there is a sacristy at the

height of the gallery. In the basement, the facade design

consists of narrow rectangular windows enclosed in stone

frames and avantcorps with a triangular gable and an

entrance to the vestibule. The second floor has lancet win-

dows. The division into two floors is emphasised by

a panel which is separated by a pilaster strip, whereas

from the east it is separated by a stone cornice.

The analysis of sources and literature

The oldest mention about the church in Szprotawa can

be found in a document issued on December 1, 1260, in

which brother Wit (Vitus), the former bishop of Lithua

nia, grants an indulgence to pilgrims visiting the Marian

Altar [1, Rep. 120, no. 1], [2, no. 1067]. The church

appears twice in the office files of the bishop of Wroc

ław, To masz II. In the first one from October 21, 1283, he

approves of the church’s income and subordinates the

branch in Dzikowi ce to the parish, and in the second one

from June 10, 1290 he confirms the abovementioned

decision [3, pp. 1, 5]. On December 1, 1314, Bishop Hen

ry of Wierzb no moved, thanks to Mechtylda’s efforts –

the widow of Prince Henry III Głogowski – and her son,

Prince Henry IV the Faithful, the Madeleine Order from

Bytom Odrzański to Szprotawa [3, p. 6], [4, no. 3437], [5,

p. 4]. The transfer of the patronage right over the church

was confirmed by bishop Nankier in the act of June 27,

1334 [2, pp. 5–7]. The document from 1348 contained the

information about funding the Holy Spirit, the Holy

Virgin Mary, St. John the Evangelist’s and St. John the

Baptist’s Chapels by Petrus Libing [1, Rep. 120, no. 55,

zdwojony portal, a powyżej wysokie ostrołuczne okno.

Podobny zablokowany otwór rysuje się od zachodu (il. 6).

Dolna, kamienna partia trzonu wieży nie ma detalu poza

kamienną płytą nagrobną altarysty Bertolda z Wierz b

i wąskimi szczelinowymi oknami. Na wysokości gzymsu

kor pusu znajduje się odsadzka, a powyżej ostrołuczna

wnę ka z oknem. Kolejne dwie, już ceglane kondygnacje

ak centują: w dolnej trzy ostrołuczne blendy, w górnej –

dwie analogiczne wnęki flankujące okno. Elewacje wieńczy

gzyms u podstawy hełmu, pod którym umieszczono kwa-

dratowe okna doświetlające ostatnią kondygnację (il. 7).

Po wschodniej stronie wieży na wysokości chóru jest

zakrystia. Kompozycja elewacji składa się w przyziemiu

z wąskich prostokątnych okien ujętych w kamienne obra-

mienia i ryzalitu z trójkątnym szczytem oraz wejściem do

kruchty. Druga kondygnacja ma ostrołuczne okna. Podział

na dwa piętra podkreśla płycina rozdzielona lizeną, a od

wschodu kamienny gzyms.

Analiza źródeł i literatury

Najstarszą wzmiankę o kościele w Szprotawie zawie

ra dokument, wystawiony 1 grudnia 1260 r., w którym

brat Wit (Vitus) dawny biskup Litwy udziela odpustu

pielgrzymom nawiedzającym Ołtarz Maryjny [1, Rep.

120, nr 1], [2, nr 1067]. Dwukrotnie świątynia występuje

w aktach z kancelarii biskupa wrocławskiego Tomasza II.

W pierwszym z 21 października 1283 zatwierdza on

dochody kościoła i podporządkowuje parafii filię w Dzi

kowicach, a w drugim z 10 czerwca 1290 r. – po twierdza

wspomnianą wcześniej decyzję [3, s. 1, 5]. 1 grud nia

1314 r. biskup Henryk z Wierzbna przeniósł, dzięki stara-

niom Mechtyldy – wdowy po księciu Henryku III Gło

gowskim – i jej syna księcia Henryka IV Wiernego, zakon

magdalenek z Bytomia Odrzańskiego do Szprotawy [3,

s. 6], [4, nr 3437], [5, s. 4]. Przekazanie praw patronatu

56], [2, pp. 9, 10], [6, no. 731, 732]. Another chapel, i.e.

St Mary Magdalene Chapel, which was funded by the

priory Agata, is mentioned in the act from 1384 [7, p. 4].

The date of commencing the reconstruction of the church

in 1416 is included in the minutes of the meeting of the

City Council [8, p. 17]. The foundation of Gethsemane

and lodge of Madeleines is confirmed by a document

from 1516 [4, p. 1]. The dates of fires which destroyed the

city, especially the last two of June 19, 1672 [8, p. 99], [9,

p. 219] and June 23, 1702 [10, p. 172], are significant

when discussing transformations of the church. After the

first fire, the main crypt was enlarged, the vaults were

repaired, the roof was made, the interior was white-

washed, and the floor was laid as well as the former main

entrance was bricked up and the current one was made [2,

p. 60], [9, p. 219].

Based on archival documents, the chronicle of the his-

tory of the church was prepared by C. Baier [3], [8] dating

the beginning of the construction of the present body to

1416, and the gallery of nuns to 1516 [8, p. 17]. In the

context of the history of the city, F. Matuszkiewicz and

G. Steller frequently mentioned the church [10], [11]. The

history of the Szprotawa Madeleines Convent was pub-

lished by W. Bochnak [7].

For the first time the church was discussed in general

by H. Lutsch who specified the beginning of its construc-

tion for the period from the end of the 13

century until

1316, and the completion of the body for the 16

century

nad ko ściołem poświadczył biskup Nankier w akcie

z 27 czerw ca 1334 r. [2, s. 5–7]. W dokumencie z 1348 r.

zawarta została informacja o fundacji kaplicy Świętego

Ducha, NMP, św. Jana Ewangelisty i św. Jana Chrzciciela

przez Petrusa Libinga [1, Rep. 120, nr 55, 56], [2, s. 9,

10], [6, nr 731, 732]. Kolejna pod wezwaniem św. Marii

Ma g daleny ufundowana przez przeoryszę Agatę wymie-

niana jest w akcie z 1384 r. [7, s. 4]. Datę rozpoczęcia

przebudowy kościoła w 1416 r. zawiera protokół z posie-

dzenia Rady Miejskiej [8, s. 17]. Powstanie Ogrójca i loży

magdalenek poświadcza dokument z 1516 r. [4, s. 1].

Istotne dla rozważań nad przekształceniami świątyni są

daty pożarów niszczących miasto, zwłaszcza dwóch

ostatnich z 19 czerwca 1672 r. [8, s. 99], [9, s. 219] oraz

z 23 czerwca 1702 [10, s. 172]. Po pierwszym powiększo-

no główną kryptę, naprawiono sklepienia, założono dach,

pobielono wnętrze i położono posadzkę, a także zamuro-

wano dawne wejście główne i przebito obecne [2, s. 60],

[9, s. 219].

Bazując na dokumentach archiwalnych, kronikę dzie-

jów kościoła opracował C. Baier [3], [8], datując począ-

tek budowy obecnego korpusu na rok 1416, a chóru

zakonnic na 1516 [8, s. 17]. W kontekście dziejów miasta

o świątyni wielokrotnie wspominali F. Matusz kiewicz

i G. Steller [10], [11]. Dzieje szprotawskiego konwentu

magdalenek opublikował W. Bochnak [7].

Kościół został po raz pierwszy omówiony ogólnie

przez H. Lutscha, który określił początek jego budowy na

okres od końca XIII w. do 1316 r., a ukończenie korpusu

– na wiek XVI [12, s. 116], [13, s. 69]

. Powojenni bada-

cze przedstawili przekształcenia kościoła lapidarnie,

przeważnie w kontekście rozwoju architektury gotyckiej

na Śląsku. Jako pierwszy na podobieństwa w kształtowa-

niu chórów fary szprotawskiej i w Górze Śląskiej wskazał

G. Chmarzyński [15, s. 365, 366]. Podobny związek z ko 

legiatą pw. św. Jakuba i Agnieszki w Nysie i z rozwiąza

niami marchijskich kościołów halowych wysunął H. Tin

telnot [16, s. 132]. Te ostatnie powiązania podkre ślił

M. Kutzner [17, s. 227–242]. Na podobieństwa w kształ-

towaniu sklepień płynące z Saksonii, Łużyc oraz Nowej

Marchii wskazała D. Hanulanka [18, s. 96 i n.]. Oba por-

tale kościoła wczesnogotyckiego omawiają T. Ko za czew

ski i H. KozaczewskaGolasz, datując północny na mniej

więcej połowę XIII w., a zachodni na 3. ćwierć tegoż

stulecia [19, s. 164–166]. Portale, układ korpusu i prez

biterium oraz sklepienia kościoła na tle miejskich halo-

wych świątyń Śląska z XV i początków XVI w. analizują

H. KozaczewskaGolasz wraz z H. GolaszSzo łomicką

[20, s. 5–66].

Chronologia przekształceń samego kościoła nakreślo-

na jest w dotychczasowej literaturze bardzo skrótowo

i ogólnie. Powstanie świątyni datowane jest na 2. połowę

XIII w., a bliżej nieokreślone przekształcenia – na 1. po ło 

wę XIV w. [20, s. 2, 47], [21, s. 47], [22, s 374, 375], [23,

pp. 235, 236], [24, s. 386], [25, s. 340]. Jedyne rozbieżno-

ści obejmują okres realizacji obecnego chóru z układem

Sklepienia w kościele w Dzierżoniowie wykonano w latach

1555–1556. Por. [14].

. Postwar researchers presented

transformations of the church in concise terms, mostly in

the context of the development of Gothic architecture in

Silesia. G. Chmarzyński was the first who pointed out the

similarities in shaping the galleries of the parish church in

Szprotawa and in Góra Śląska [15, pp. 365, 366]. A simi-

lar relationship with St. James and Agnes Collegiate in

Nysa and with the solutions of Mark’s form hall churches

was put forward by H. Tintelnot [16, p. 132]. These last

connections were emphasised by M. Kutzner [17,

pp. 227–242]. The similarities in shaping the vaults from

Saxony, Lusatia and New Marchia were indicated by

D. Hanulanka [18, p. 96 et al.]. Both portals of the early

Gothic church are discussed by T. Kozaczewski and

H. Ko zaczewskaGolasz, dating the northern part to the

mid13

century and the western one to the third quarter

of that century [19, pp. 164–166]. The portals, the layout

of the body, the presbytery and the vault of the church

against the background of the city hall churches of Sile

sia from the 15

and the beginnings of the 16

centuries

are analysed by H. KozaczewskaGolasz together with

H. GolaszSzołomicka [20, pp. 5–66].

The chronology of the transformation of the church

itself is outlined in the current literature very briefly and

generally. The foundation of the church goes back to the

second half of the 13

century, and some unspecified trans-

formations to the first half of the 14

century [20, pp. 2,

47],

[21, p. 47], [22, pp. 374, 375], [23, pp. 235, 236], [24, p.

386],

[25, p. 340]. The only discrepancies cover the pe riod

of the implementation of the present gallery with the lay-

out of the body pillars, whose start according to C. Baier’s

information took place in 1416 [8, p. 17], and the comple-

tion is estimated for 1423 [21, p. 47], 1424 [20, p. 47],

[22, pp. 374, 375], [23, p. 235, 236], or even 1426 [24, p. 386],

[25, p. 340]. The authors of an entry in Architek tu ra go

tyc-

ka w Polsce (Goth ic Architecture in Po land) M. Ma chow 

i and A. Włoda rek presented the pro blem in a different

way [26, p. 225]. According to them, the church was con-

structed from the second half of the 13

century to the

first half of the 14

century, it had one nave with a tower

from the north and a lancet portal from the west. In the

century, the current gallery and hall body were erect-

ed, whereas in the first half of the 16

century, vaults,

gables and annexes were constructed. Du ring the exchange

of the floor in 2009, archaeological research was carried

out [27, pp. 132–142]. On its basis, K. Bar czyńska recog-

nised that the church, which was built be fore the middle

of the 13

century, had the present main nave and the

northern aisle, and the church’s western and northern

walls are preserved. In the first half of the 14

century,

the chapel was supposed to be erected in the place of the

present sacristy and the lower parts of the tower were to

be built with the use of stone demolition mate rial – at the

beginning of the 15

century. According to the cited

author, the construction of the current gallery and hall

body took place in the years 1416–1423 [28, pp. 27–32].

The vaults in the church in Dzierżoniów were constructed in the

years 1555–1556. Com. [14].

filarów korpusu, którego rozpoczęcie w oparciu o in for

mację C. Baiera miało miejsce w 1416 r. [8, s. 17], a ukoń-

czenie szaco wane jest na rok 1423 [21, s. 47], 1424 [20,

s. 47], [22, s. 374, 375], [23, s. 235, 236], czy nawet 1426

[24, s. 386], [25, s. 340]. Odmiennie przedstawili zagad-

nienie M. Ma chowski i A. Włodarek – autorzy hasła w Ar -

chi tek turze gotyckiej w Polsce [26, s. 225]. Ich zdaniem

świątynia powstała w okresie od 2. połowy XIII w. do 1.

połowy XIV w., była jedno nawowa z wieżą od pół

nocy

i ostrołucz nym portalem od zachodu. W XV w. wznie

siono

obec ny chór i korpus halowy, a w 1. połowie XVI w. wpro

wa dzono sklepienia, szczyty i przybudówki. Pod czas

wymiany posadzki w 2009 r. przeprowadzono badania

ar cheo logiczne [27, s. 132–142]. Na ich podstawie K. Bar

czyńska uznała, że kościół powstały przed połową XIII w.

obejmował swoim zasięgiem obecną nawę główną oraz

północną, a zachowana jest z niego ściana zachodnia i pół-

nocna. W 1. połowie XIV w. w miejscu obecnej zakrystii

miała powstać kaplica, a dolne partie wieży z użyciem ka 

miennego materiału rozbiórkowego – w po czątku XV w.

Budowę obecnego chóru i korpusu halowego cytowana

autorka osadziła w latach 1416–1423 [28, s. 27–32].

W 2016 r. A. Legendziewicz, bazując na różnicach

tech nologicznomateriałowych, przeprowadził badania

architektoniczne z wydzieleniem chronologicznych faz

bu do w lanych, a także analizę form oraz detalu archi 

tektonicznego [29]. Stanowią one, uzupełnione o kweren-

dę archiwalną i ikonograficzną, podstawę niniejszych

roz ważań.

Wyniki badań

Zasięg najstarszego kościoła wyznaczają mury wznie-

sione w wątku kamiennym z użytymi w narożnikach blo-

kami rudy darniowej (il. 8a, b). W fasadzie zachodniej

widoczna jest – zachowana do wysokości podstawy obec-

nego szczytu – elewacja ujęta dwoma przekątniowo usta-

wionymi przyporami narożnymi. Na osi w przyziemiu

znajduje się odsłonięty w 1924 r. ostrołuczny portal usko-

kowy o formach z początku XIV w., z częściowo zrekon-

struowanym detalem ościeża oraz umieszczony nad nim

okulus (il. 1, 9a). Fragmenty elewacji północnej uchwy-

cono na zachodnim skraju obecnej oraz w miejscu jej

styku z zachodnią ścianą wieży, gdzie w śrubowej klatce

scho dowej zarejestrowano ościeża wraz z maswerkiem prze

źrocza okiennego. W przyziemiu, po wschodniej stronie wie

ży zarejestrowano kamienny ostrołuczny portal usko ko wy

z piaskowcowym obramieniem (il. 9b). Na to miast zasięg

części kapłańskiej udało się określić w oparciu o wy niki

wspom

nianych już badań archeologicznych

prze pro wa

dzonych w 2009 r. [27, s. 132–142], podczas któ rych

uchwycono fragmenty murów fundamentowych północ-

nej oraz wschodniej części prezbiterium.

Dzięki zarejestrowanym reliktom można podjąć pró 

bę rekonstrukcji bryły kościoła zrealizowanego zapew ne

w 2. połowie XIII w. i ukończonego w początkach na stęp-

nego stulecia. Partię wschodnią tworzyło prezbiterium

o planie zbliżonym do prostokąta. Nieznany pozostaje

układ jego wnętrza, ale znaczna szerokość ławy fundamen

towej wskazuje, że mogło być ono nakryte sklepieniem.

In 2016, A. Legendziewicz, considering technological

and material differences, carried out architectural research

with the separation of chronological construction phases

as well as the analysis of forms and architectural detail

[29]. The research constitutes the basis of the present study

and is supplemented with archival and iconogra phic query.

The research results

The area of the oldest church is marked by walls which

were constructed of stone with blocks of bog ore used in

the corners (Fig. 8a, b). In the western front wall, which

is preserved to the height of the base of the current gable,

we can see the facade enclosed with two diagonally set

corner buttresses. There is a lancet portal with splayed

jambs with forms from the beginning of the 14

century,

revealed in 1924 with a partially reconstructed detail of

the jamb and an oculus above it (Fig. 1, 9a). Fragments of

the northern facade were noticed on the western edge of

the present one and in the place of its contact with the

western wall of the tower, where in the spiral staircase

the jambs along with the windowglass tracery were

found. In the basement, on the eastern side of the tower,

there was found a stone lancet portal with splayed jambs

with a sandstone framing (Fig. 9b). However, the area of

the priest’s part was possible to be determined on the

basis of the results of the already aforementioned archaeo-

logical research which was carried out in 2009 [27,

pp. 132–142], during which fragments of the foundation

walls of the northern and eastern parts of the presbytery

were reported.

Thanks to the registered relics, it is possible to try to

reconstruct the church’s mass which was probably con-

structed in the second half of the 13

century and finished

at the beginnings of the next century. The eastern part

consisted of a presbytery with a plan like a rectangle. The

layout of its interior remains unknown, but a considerable

width of the footing indicates that it could have been cov-

ered with a vault. The body, which was probably erected

soon after the gallery was built, was shaped as a part con-

sisting of three bays. This sort of solution is indicated by

the location of the lancet window on the northern side and

roz wiązanie wskazuje lokalizacja ostrołucznego okna po

stronie północnej i relikty wystroju elewacji ka plic po

stronie południowej z połowy XIV w. W nich uchwycono

ślady dwóch dwuuskokowych przypór, co na suwa przy-

puszczenie, że założono je na linii przęseł nawy pierwot-

nego korpusu (il. 3, 8a, b).

Elewacje XIIIwiecznego kościoła ukształtowano dość

skromnie. Ich wystrój składał się z eksponowanego lica

kamiennego z eratyków z widocznymi warstwami wy 

równawczymi co 70–80 cm. W narożnikach oraz na kra-

wędziach ościeży otworów okiennych osadzono staran

nie spa sowane bloki rudy darniowej. Elewację szczytową

zwień czono trójkątnym prostym szczytem. Na osi umiesz-

czono w przyziemiu ostrołuczny portal uskokowy o for-

mach z początków XIV w., a powyżej niego okulus (il. 1,

9a). Prawdopodobnie w jego prześwicie mogła znaj dować

się ażurowa kamienna rozeta. Elewacjom bocz nym o wy 

sokości około 9 m nadano zapewne rytm odpowia da ją

cyukładowi wnętrza. W osiach przęseł założono ostro

łucz ne okna z kamiennymi dwudzielnymi maswerkami,

z których zachowane jest środkowe w ścianie pół noc nej,

a w skrajnym wschodnim zakomponowano drugie wejś

cie, ujęte w kamienny, ostrołuczny, uskoko wy portal. Zlo

kalizowano je na osi Zaułka Kościelnego (Kirch gasse)

łączącego teren wokół kościoła z Rynkiem (il. 9b).

the relics of the chapel facade decoration on the southern

side from the mid14

century. The traces of two but-

tresses with splayed jambs were found in them, suggest-

ing that they were placed on the bay line of the original

body nave (Fig. 3, 8a, b).

The facades of the 13

century church were shaped

quite modestly. Their decor consisted of an exposed stone

face of glacial erratics with visible levelling layers every

70–80 cm. In the corners and on the edges of the window

opening jambs, wellfitting blocks of bog ore were set.

The top facade was crowned with a triangular straight

gable. In the basement on the axis a lancet portal with

splayed jambs with forms from the beginning of the

century and an oculus above it (Fig. 1, 9a) were

placed. Probably in its clearance there could have been an

openwork stone rosette. Side facades of about 9 m high

were probably given a rhythm corresponding to the layout

of the interior. On the bay axes there were lancet windows

with stone bipartite tracery, the central of which is

pre

served in the northern wall and in the easternmost corner

there was the second entrance enclosed in a stone and lancet

portal with splayed jambs. They were located on the axis

Zaułek Kościelny (Kirchgasse) which connected the

area around the church with the Market Square (Fig. 9b).

Diagonal buttresses supporting the facade suggest that

the interior could have been vaulted. However, quite a con

siderable width of the nave (about 11 m) indicates rather

the covering with a ceiling or an open roof truss.

Probably after the completion of the body construc-

tion, at the beginning of the 14

century, at the northern

facades, at the height of a part of the eastern and central

bays, a tower on a plan similar to a square with dimen-

sions in the outer contour of about 9 × 10 m was con-

structed. The perimeter walls from the east, north and

west are from 2.7 to 2.9 m thick. Only the southern wall

is narrower – it is only 80 cm long. This difference result-

ed from the planned superstructure of the tower walls

above the level of the body cornice, where the thickness

was to be similar. During the construction, a tombstone

plate of prebendary Berthold from Wierzbno was built

into its northeastern corner in around 1316–1326 (?) [30,

pp. 15–20] (Fig. 7).

The lowest storey was connected with the aisle by

means of a passage, the width of which in the tower

reach ed almost 2 m. It was covered with a segmental arch

shaped by means of voussoir stones. The lower edge of

the support was located at a height of about 3 m above the

current floor. The interior was covered with a beam

framed ceiling, whose 80 cm deep wall pockets were

formed during the construction of perimeter walls. The

beams were placed at a height of about 6.6 m above the

level of the current floor. The illumination was provided

by a window in the eastern wall with 90 cm wide jambs

expanding from the interior with a segmental arch made

of voussoir stones. Its height, measured from the window

sill, was 2 m. The narrowing of the opening in the facade

was made of a simple stone jambs with a lancet shape.

The location and the layout of the room with the entrance

and the lancet window from the east suggests that there

might have been a chapel here which was funded by

Prawdopodobnie po za koń czeniu budowy korpusu,

w początku XIV w., przy elewacji północnej, na wyso kości

części wschodniego i środkowego przęsła wzniesiono wieżę

na planie zbliżonym do kwadratu o wymiarach w ob rysie

zewnętrznym około 9 × 10 m. Mury obwodowe od wschodu,

północy i zachodu mają od 2,7 do 2,9 m gru bości. Jedynie

ściana południowa jest węższa – liczy tyl ko 80 cm. Różni

ca ta wynikała z planowanej nadbudowy mu rów wieży po 

żej poziomu gzymsu korpusu, gdzie gru bość miała być

zbliżona. Podczas budowy w jej północnowschodni na 

rożnik wmurowano tablicę nagrobną altarysty Bertolda

z Wierzb na z około 1316–1326 r. (?) [30, s. 15–20] (il. 7).

Najniższą kondygnację połączono z nawą przejściem,

którego szerokość w wieży sięgała prawie 2 m. Nakrywał

je łęk odcinkowy ukształtowany z klińców kamiennych.

Dolna krawędź wezgłowia znajdowała się na wysokości

około 3 m nad obecną posadzką. Wnętrze nakryto stro-

pem belkowym, którego gniazda o głębokości 80 cm

ukształtowano w trakcie wznoszenia murów obwodo-

wych. Belki osadzono na wysokości około 6,60 m nad

poziomem obecnej posadzki. Doświetlenie zapewniało

okno w ścianie wschodniej o rozszerzających się oście-

żach od wnętrza o szerokości 90 cm z łękiem odcinkowym

z klińców. Jego wysokość mierzona od parapetu wynosiła

2 m. Przewężenie otworu w elewacji stanowiło proste k a-

mienne ościeże o wykroju ostrołucznym. Lokalizacja oraz

układ pomieszczenia z wejściem i ostrołucznym ok nem od

wschodu nasuwa przypuszczenie, że mogła się tu znajdo-

wać kaplica ufundowana przez Petrusa Libinga [1, Rep.

120, nr 55, 56], [2, s. 9, 10], [6, nr 731, 732] (?).

W południowozachodnim narożniku murów wieży

zlo kalizowano śrubową klatkę schodową o średnicy od

1,9 do 2,0 m. Umieszczono ją w osi środkowego otworu

okiennego elewacji północnej, rozkuwając częściowo

jego parapet oraz mur poniżej. Wejście od strony nawy

ujęto w ostrołuczne obramienie, którego profil jest obec-

nie zamurowany od strony wnętrza kościoła. Wyjście z klat-

ki do wieży skomunikowano poprzez korytarz doświetlo-

ny oknem szczelinowym od zachodu. Otwór z progiem na

wysokości około 8 m nad obecną posadzką połączono

podestem z drewnianymi schodami prowadzącymi na

strych. Poziom wieży doświetlały trzy okna szczelinowe

w osiach ścian: wschodniej, północnej i zachodniej. Ich

parapety umieszczono na poziomie około 11,2 m nad

obecną posadzką w przyziemiu. Wysokość prześwitów

każdego z nich wynosiła prawie 1,2 m. Na elewacji kon-

dygnację tę akcentowała odsadzka będąca zapewne relik-

tem niezachowanego gzymsu.

Powyżej zarejestrowano mury kamienne sięgające

około 2 m nad poziom odsadzki. Prawdopodobnie w osiach

ścian znajdowały się otwory okienne od wschodu, północy

i zachodu, które uległy zniszczeniu. Nieznaczne różnice

w technologii budowy tej partii wieży obejmują zastoso-

wania grafitowych kamieni w licu. Jednakże analo giczna

zaprawa wapiennopiaskowa wskazuje, że czas powstania

tej części można wiązać z realizacją najniższego trzonu

wieży – czyli jeszcze w 1. połowie XIV w. Zachowa

ny mur kamienny sięgający około 15,3 m nad poziom

obecnego terenu świadczy o tym, że wieża przewyższa

mury obwodowe korpusu o co najmniej 6 m. Naj praw do

podob niej wieńczył ją niezachowany obecnie hełm (il. 7).

Kolejne inwestycje związane z rozbudową kościoła

przy niosła połowa XIV w. Zapewne wtedy powstał rząd

trzech kaplic wzdłuż południowej elewacji korpusu, kruch

ta północna oraz przypuszczalnie podwyższono wieżę

(il. 3, 7).

Zakres przekształceń obejmujący południową elewację

korpusu udało się rozpoznać w południowym narożu

fasady zachodniej oraz na odcinku czterech przęseł (licząc

od zachodu) elewacji południowej. Na skraju fasady uch

wycono ostrołuczne okno o rozglifionych ościeżach i sze-

rokości w krawędziach sięgającej 2 m. Po jej stronie połu-

dniowej stwierdzono relikty dwóch ostrołucznych wnęk

o głębokości 1/2 cegły oraz szerokości 70 cm, z których ta

bliżej otworu zachowana jest w całości, a z kolejnej wi 

doczna jest północna krawędź. Układ ten miał swoją kon-

tynuację od strony południowej, gdzie zarejestrowano

(licząc od zachodu) dwie wnęki oraz ślad otworu okienne-

go zablokowanego przez przyporę korpusu z lat 1474–

1488. Ślad krawędzi pionowych kolejnej wnęki uchwy co

no zaraz za skarpą. Poniżej okna obecnie drugiego przęs ła

zinwentaryzowano wy chodzący fundament z eratyków,

a powyżej niego regularne przelicowanie. Oba te elementy

wskazują na lokalizację w tym miejscu skarpy wydziela-

jącej pierwszą z kaplic. Ślad kolejnej wnęki widoczny jest

przed trzecią przyporą korpusu. Zasięg ściany udało się

uchwycić w rejonie dawnego Karceru i Ciemnicy, gdzie

stwierdzono ślad kolejnej skutej skarpy (il. 8a, b).

Lokalizacja przypór i otworu okiennego od strony po 

łudniowej wskazuje na wzniesienie co najmniej trójprzęs

łowej sklepionej budowli o wymiarach około 6 × 23 m,

mieszczącej trzy kaplice. Na bogatą kompozycję ich elewa-

cji składały się regularnie rozmieszczone rozglifione ostro-

łuczne okna z ceramicznymi maswerkami oraz os tro łucz

ne wnęki zakomponowane na gładkich płaszczyz nach ścian.

Po północnej stronie nawy, przy wschodniej elewacji

wieży, przed wejściem na osi Zaułka Kościelnego wznie-

siono kruchtę. Otrzymała ona plan zbliżony do kwadratu

o długości boku około 5 m. Nakryto ją sklepieniem krzy-

żowożebrowym. Żebra o profilu gruszkowym z tzw.

dziubkiem spływają na wsporniki w formie masek apo-

tropaicznych – klucz otrzymał dekorację z brodatą twarzą

mężczyzny (Bóg Ojciec?). W związku z budową kruchty

zablokowano okno na elewacji wschodniej w przyzie

miu wieży. Zapewne ze względu na uszkodzenie hełmu

przeprowadzono w niej prace naprawcze. Wymurowano

ce glane ościeża wnęk okiennych na najwyższej kamien 

nej kondygnacji (poziom 11,3 m nad obecnym terenem)

i podwyższono ją o dwa piętra o łącznej wysokości około

7,8 m. Gładkie, wymurowane w wątku jednowozówko-

wym elewacje oz dobiono dwoma kondygnacjami tynko-

wanych ostrołucznych blend rozdzielonych płyciną fry-

zową. W górnym pasie w środkowej umieszczono okna

(il. 7). Fakturę lica podkreślono poprzez starannie opra

cowaną spoinę: poziomą – płaską dołem podciętą, a pio-

nową – płaską z rysą.

Petrus Libing [1, Rep. 120, no. 55, 56], [2, pp. 9, 10], [6,

no. 731, 732] (?).

In the southwestern corner of the tower walls a spiral

staircase with a diameter of 1.9 to 2.0 m was found. It was

placed on the axis of the central window opening of the

northern facade, partially breaking its window sill and the

wall below. The entrance from the nave side had a lancet

framing, whose profile is currently bricked up from the

inside of the church. The exit from the staircase to the

tower was connected through a corridor illuminated by

a slot window from the west. The opening with a thres

hold at a height of about 8 m above the current floor was

connected with wooden stairs leading to the attic by

means of a platform. The level of the tower was lighted

by three slot windows in the axes of eastern, northern, and

wester walls. Their window sills were placed at the level

of about 11.2 m above the current floor in the basement.

The height of clearances of each of them was almost

1.2 m. On the facade, this storey was emphasised by

the a step which is probably a relic of the unpreserved

cornice.

Above, stone walls were noticed, reaching about 2 m

above the level of the step. Probably in the axes of the

walls there were window openings from the east, north,

and west, which were destroyed. Slight differences in the

construction technology of this part of the tower include

the use of graphite stones in the face. However, analogous

limesand mortar indicates that the time of constructing

this part can be associated with the implementation of the

lowest part of the tower, i.e. still in the first half of the

century. The preserved stone wall reaching about

15.3 m above the current level of land proves that the

tower exceeds perimeter walls of the body by at least 6 m.

Most probably, it was crowned with a copula which was

not preserved (Fig. 7).

The next investments related to the extension of the

church took place in the mid14

century. Probably at that

time a row of three chapels along the southern facade of

the body as well as the northern vestibule were built and

probably the tower was made higher (Fig. 3, 7).

The scope of transformations including the southern

facade of the body was possible to be identified in the

southern corner of the western facade and on the section

of four bays (counting from the west) of the southern

facade. At the edge of the facade, a lancet window with

jambs and widths reaching 2 m at the edges was noticed.

On its southern side, there were relics of two lancet nich-

es with a depth of 1/2 brick and a width of 70 cm, of

which the nearest to the opening was preserved in its

entirety, and from the next one the northern edge is visi-

ble. This layout had its continuation from the southern

side, where two niches were recorded (counting from the

west) and a trace of the window opening blocked by the

body buttress in the years 1474–1488. The trace of the

vertical edges of the next niche was found just behind the

buttress. Below the window of the present second bay, an

emerging foundation of eratics was inventoried and regu-

lar facing above it. Both of these elements indicate the

location of the buttress separating the first of the chapels

in this place. The trace of the next niche is visible in front

się po południowej stronie świątyni. Na wysokości obec-

nego czwartego przęsła korpusu (licząc od zachodu) roz-

pięto pomiędzy oboma budynkami ganek oparty zapewne

na co najmniej trzech arkadach, z których zachowana jest

północna z filarem i fragmentami ścian korytarza w rejo-

nie obecnego Karceru. Jego budowa spowodowała roz-

biórkę przypory pomiędzy wschodnią a środkową kaplicą

z około połowy XIV w. (il. 4, 8a, b).

Ganek założono na arkadach o rozpiętości około 2,8 m,

wysokości prawie 2 m i łęku grubości 1,5 cegły o wykro-

ju półkolistym, opartych na filarach o wymiarach około

3,2 × 2,2 m. Ściany korytarza o grubości 1 cegły i wyso-

kości około 2,5 m zwieńczono gzymsem. Na ścianach

oparto sklepienie odcinkowe oraz nakryto dwuspadowym

dachem, którego zarys widoczny jest na elewacji połu-

dniowej w rejonie Ogrójca (il. 4).

Prawdopodobnie w połowie XV w. podwyższono wieżę

o 6,8 m – do poziomu prawie 33 m nad terenem. We wnę-

trzu założono dwa stropy: dolny na poziomie +26,2 oraz

górny na poziomie +31,0 m. Dolne

pomieszczenie oświe-

tlało jedno ostrołuczne okno od strony południowej, a na

górnym zlokalizowano kondygnację obronną. Mury

obwodowe o grubości około 90 cm otrzymały blankowa-

nie z prześwitami o wymiarach od 120 do 130 cm wyso-

kości i od 80 do 85 cm szerokości. Roz mieszczono je po

5 na każdej z elewacji w rozstawie od 75 do 80 cm, a pa 

rapety założono około 80 cm nad poziomem stropu. Naj

prawdopodobniej wieżę wieńczył hełm, na co wskazuje

zachowana gładka spoina oraz brak zniszczeń we wnętrz-

nego lica.

Zapewne realizacja obecnego halowego korpusu wraz

z prezbiterium mogła mieć miejsce między pożarem mia-

sta w 1473 r. a oblężeniem Szprotawy przez wojska króla

Macieja Korwina w 1488 r. [8, s. 99]

. Wzniesiono wtedy

trójnawowy, siedmioprzęsłowy korpus halowy o szeroko-

ści 17 m i długości 42,5 m, bez wydzielonego prezbite-

rium z wielobocznym obejściem chóru (il. 5, 8a, b).

Rozpoczynając budowę, rozebrano prezbiterium i po 

łudniową ścianę nawy z 2. połowy XIII w. wraz ze ścia-

nami wydzielającymi zespół trzech kaplic wzniesionych

około połowy XIV w. Pozostawione mury obwodowe pod-

wyższono po stronie północnej o około 8,5 m. Nową partię,

co widoczne jest w rejonie kaplicy Świętego Krzy ża,

zakomponowano z gzymsem na poziomie dolnych kra 

wędzi poszurów przypór, a w górnej części z tynkowaną

płyciną fryzową i kamiennym gzymsem okapnikowym.

Korpus od południa podwyższono o około 7,6 m, wpro wa

dzając tylko dwa górne elementy – tj. płycinę fry zo wą

i kamienny gzyms, oraz wzmocniono dostawio ny mi w li nii

przęseł wnętrza skarpami: dwoma prostopad łymi od pół 

cy i zapewne czterema od południa. Po zo sta wio no

of the third buttress of the body. The range of the wall was

possible to be noticed in the area of the former Solitary

Confinement Cell and Altar of Repose, where a trace of

another broken buttress was found (Fig. 8a, b).

The location of buttresses and a window opening on

the southern side indicates the construction of at least

threebay vaulted structure with dimensions of approxi-

mately 6 × 23 m, housing three chapels. The rich compo-

sition of their facades consisted of regularly spaced

splayed lancet windows with ceramic tracery and lancet

niches which were designed on smooth planes of walls.

On the northern side of the nave, at the eastern facade

of the tower, and in front of the entrance on the axis of

Zaułek Kościelny (Kirchgasse), a vestibule was erected.

It had a plan similar to a square with a side length of about

5 m. It was covered with a crossribbed vault. Pear profile

ribs with the socalled “cube” spread to cantilevers in the

form of apotropaic masks – the key was decorated with

a bearded human face (God the Father?). In connection

with the construction of the vestibule, the window on the

eastern facade in the tower basement was blocked. Pro ba

bly due to the damage to the copula the repair works were

carried out in it. The brickwork jambs of the window

ni ches were made on the highest stone storey (level 11.3 m

above the terrain) and it was increased by two floors with

a total height of about 7.8 m. The brickwork (only one

side of brick) smooth facades were decorated with two

floors of plastered lancet blind windows which were sep-

arated by a frieze panel. In the upper belt in the middle

one the windows were set (Fig. 7). The texture of the face

was emphasised by carefully developed grout, i.e. hori-

zontal – flat undercut at the bottom, and vertical – flat

with a scratch.

Still probably in the second half of the 14

century, the

church was connected with the buildings of the Madeleine

convent which was located on the southern side of the

church. At the height of the present fourth bay of the body

(counting from the west), there was a vestibule between

the two buildings, which was supported by at least three

arcades, the northern of which is preserved with the pillar

and fragments of the corridor walls in the area of the pre-

sent Solitary Confinement Cell. Its construction resulted in

the demolition of the buttresses between the eastern and

central chapels from around the middle of the 14

cen tury

(Fig. 4, 8a, b).

A porch was founded on arcades with a span of about

2.8 m, a height of almost 2 m and a semicircular arch of

a 1.5 cm thick brick, supported by pillars with dimensions

of about 3.2 × 2.2 m. The walls of the corridor with

a thickness of 1 brick and a height of about 2.5 m were

crowned with a cornice. The walls supported a sectional

vault and were covered with a gable roof, the outline of

which is visible on the southern facade in the region of

Gethsemane (Fig. 4).

Probably in the middle of the 15

century, the tower

was raised by 6.8 m, i.e. to a level of almost 33 m above

the terrain. Two ceilings were set in the interior, i.e. the

lower one on the level of +26.2 and the upper one on the

level of +31.0 m. The lower room was lighted by one

lancet window from the south, and on the upper one the

W miejsce chóru z 2. połowy XIII w. wzniesiono nowy

– zamknięty od wschodu dziewięcioma bokami szes na

stoboku. Jego elewacje opięto regularnie rozmiesz czo ny

mi trójuskokowymi przyporami. W dwóch przęsłach od

po łudnia oraz w sześciu tworzących zamknięcie wschod

nie zakomponowano ostrołuczne wysokie okna. Odsło nię

ty fragment maswerku w oknie na osi ołtarza wska zu je,

że wykonano je z kamienia o podziale na trzy

prze świ ty.

Od południa, w przęśle wschodnim, na osi wejś cia północ-

nego umieszczono otwór drzwiowy ujęty w dwu ramien 

profilowany portal. Poprzedzała go kruch

Otwierała

się ona ostrołuczną arkadą rozpiętą pomiędzy przyporami

(il. 5, 8a, b).

Elewacje ukształtowano na cokole o wklęsłym kamien-

nym profilu. Powyżej umieszczono gzyms okapnikowy

tworzący dolny uskok na przyporach i krawędź parapetu

okien. Pas pod gzymsem wieńczącym wypełniła tynko-

wana płycina fryzowa rozdzielona w każdym przęśle,

w pasie nad poszurem przypory (il. 5).

Wnętrze ukształtowano w układzie trójnawowym, ha 

lowym, siedmioprzęsłowym. W linii dawnej ściany połu-

dniowej nawy z 2. połowy XIII w. wzniesiono rząd sied-

miu filarów, z których ostatni prawdopodobnie ustawiono

na południowowschodnim narożniku prezbiterium.

Drugi rząd umieszczono w osi dawnej nawy. Parę ostat-

nich (wschodnich) przesunięto o mniej więcej 1 m do osi

kościoła, tworząc zamknięcie chóru. Wnętrze podzielone

zostało na trzy nawy, z których środkowa miała szerokość

prawie 5,5 m, a boczne 4,3 (północna) i 4,0 m (południo-

wa). Ośmioboczne filary rozmieszczono w rozstawie co

3,5–4,3 m. Otrzymały one dwuwklęskowe bazy wymuro-

wane z kształtek ceramicznych formowanych przed

wypałem. Lico opracowano starannie z płaską spoiną

z rysą. Na filarach rozpięto ostrołuczne uskokowe ar

kady.

Powyżej łęków wymodelowano opory, w których oparto

sklepienie. W nawie głównej ukształtowano je jako kolebę

z poprzecznymi lunetami, a w bocznych – jako krzy

żowe.

Sklepienia otrzymały dekorację żebrową spływającą na

wsporniki graniaste lub z maskami (we wschodnim przę-

śle chóru oraz w skrajnym zachodnim, w korpusie).

W nawie głównej i bocznych założono układ sieciowy,

w chórze – trójpodporowy na trzech trójkątach, a w obej-

ściu krzyżowy, trójpodporowy oraz mieszany krzyżowo-

trójpodporowy. W przęśle na osi wejść bocznych ukształ-

towano otwór w sklepieniu (tzw. himmelloch) (il. 2a, b).

defensive storey was located. Perimeter walls which were

about 90 cm thick received blanking with clearances from

120 to 130 cm in height and from 80 to 85 cm in width.

There were five of them on each of the facades at a spac-

ing of 75 to 80 cm, and the window sills were placed

about 80 cm above the ceiling level. Most probably, the

tower was crowned with a copula, as indicated by the pre-

served smooth grout and the lack of damages to the inter-

nal face.

Probably the implementation of the present hall body

with the presbytery could have taken place between the

fire of the city in 1473 and the siege of Szprotawa by the

army of King Matthias Corvinus in 1488 [8, p. 99]

. At

that time, a onenave and twoaisled, sevenbay hall body

which was 17 m wide and of 42.5 m long was erected

with no separate presbytery with a polygonal passage of

the gallery (Fig. 5, 8a, b).

When the construction began, the presbytery and the

southern wall of the aisle from the second half of the 13

century along with the walls separating a complex of

three chapels built around the mid14

century were

demolished. The left perimeter walls were raised on the

northern side by about 8.5 m. A new part, which is visible

in the area of the Holy Cross Chapel, was designed with

a cornice at the level of the bottom edges of the buttress

foundations, and in the upper part with a plastered frieze

and a dripstone cornice. From the south, the body was

raised by about 7.6 m and two upper elements were intro-

duced, i.e. a frieze panel and a stone cornice and then it

was reinforced by escarpments added along the interior

span line, i.e. two perpendicular ones from the north and

most probably four from the south. The corner buttresses

of the nave from the second half of the 13

century were

left and raised (Fig. 1). The escarpment was also widened

in the southwestern corner. From the south, three lancet

windows were set in the axes of bays. In connection with

their construction, the niches and openings of the former

chapels were walled up, except for the following three:

two from the south and one from the west. The extreme

western bay was formed without a window and in its

lower part under the blocked window an entrance covered

with a segmented arch was made. This bay illuminated

the window of the former chapel, which was left at the

edge of the western facade. In connection with the intro-

duction of a new interior layout, the buttress between the

first and the second chapel was also demolished.

In the place of the gallery from the second half of the

century, a new one was erected, which was closed

from the east by means of the nine sides of the sixteenth

side polygon. Its facades were lined with regular three

bay buttresses with splayed jambs. In two bays from the

south and in the six which form the eastern closure, high

St Catherine of Alexandria Church in Góra from the years

1457–1552 has a similar hall layout [26, pp. 89, 90]. The drawing of the

vaulted ribs, which was preserved in the Szprotawa Church, is similar to

those made after 1498 in the postFranciscan church in Brzeg [31], from

the years 1515–1520 in the postAugustinian church in Żagań [26,

p. 276] as well as in St George Church in Dzierżoniów from the years

1555–1556 [14].

Przy kruchcie północnej w dwóch przęsłach zaplanowa-

no budowę prawdopodobnie kaplicy – otwierającej się do

wnętrza parą ostrołucznych arkad o łękach uskokowych.

Zachowane są one na poziomie obecnego strychu nad

zakrystią. W jej zasięgu przewidziano budowę dwóch

ścian, dla których powiązania wypuszczono strzępia w kie-

runku północnym. Pomiędzy arkadami ukształtowano

wąski filar wspierający ścianę i spływ sklepienia nawy

bocznej. Powyżej łęków przygotowano także opory pod

sklepienia. Na etapie realizacji projekt ten zarzucono, lo 

kalizując tu dwukondygnacyjną bryłę mieszczącą za krys

tię i zapewne lożę kolatorską (?). W miejsce wysokich

arkad wprowadzono dwa ostrołuczne okna o obniżonych

w stosunku do pierwotnych łękach, które doświetliły gór ne

pomieszczenie. Na obu poziomach założono dwa przęs ła

sklepień krzyżowożebrowych rozdzielonych szer szym

żebrem. Spływy w zakrystii oparto na wspornikach grania-

stych, a na piętrze – o formie masek fantazyjnych maszka-

ronów. W związku z nadbudową kruchty w przestrzeni nad

nią założono sklepienie krzyżowe bezżebrowe (il. 8a, b).

Zasięg bryły obecnej zakrystii skorygowano podczas

bu dowy murów obwodowych, wznosząc jej ścianę wschod

nią w linii północ–południe oraz nadbudowując piętro nad

kruchtą północną. Elewacje otrzymały cokół z kamiennym

wklęsłym profilem – analogicznym jak w obejściu chóru.

Od północy w linii żebra rozdzielającego umieszczono

lizenę. Elewacje o skromnej dekoracji tworzyły w parterze

wąskie prostokątne okna z kamiennymi obramieniami

– dwa od północy oraz jedno nieco szersze od wschodu. Na

pięt rze wydzielonym od północy płyciną fryzową i od

wschodu kamiennym gzymsem okapnikowym umieszczo-

no ostrołuczne okna o rozglifionych oś cieżach. Na dłuższej

elewacji ze względu na nadbudowę kruchty wprowadzono

trzy okna zakomponowane osiowo, a od wschodu – jedno.

Bryłę nakryto dachem pulpitowym opartym na ścianie kor-

pusu, poniżej płyciny fryzowej.

Zmieniono także wystrój elewacji zachodniej. O mniej

więcej 2/3 wysokości skrócono górną partię trójkątne

go szczytu kościoła z 2. połowy XIII w. Na całej szeroko-

ści fasady, obejmującej także fragment podwyższonej

ściany w zasięgu nawy południowej, założono nowy

szczyt o nieznanym obecnie układzie – być może uskoko-

wym lub uskokowotrójkątnym (?)

. Na jego kompozycję

składały się blendy ostrołuczne i prostokątne, czteropolo-

we dzielone krzyżem łacińskim, ułożone zapewne w dwóch

pasach pomiędzy poziomymi płycinami. Najniższą kon-

dygnację podkreślał fryz obejmujący niemal całą szero-

kość elewacji. Powyżej umieszczono regularnie

roz sta 

w i o

nych jedenaście blend, z których dwie skrajne były

zapewne prostokątne. Kolejne dwie ukształtowano jako

ostrołuczne z tynkowaną prostokątną blendą czteropo lo wą

w tle, a pozostałe siedem o analogicznym układzie ufor mo

wano jako wyższe (il. 1). Drugą kondygnację wy dzielono

płyciną fryzową. Zakomponowano w niej blendy w co

najmniej siedmiu osiach. W skrajnych umieszczono nieco

niższe o wykroju niemal półkolistym, a powyżej nich –

lancet windows were designed. The revealed fragment of

the tracery in the window on the altar axis indicates that

they were made of stone with a division into three clear-

ances. From the south, in the eastern bay, on the axis of

the northern entrance, there is a door opening enclosed in

a twoarmed profiled portal. It was preceded by a vesti-

bule covered with a cross vault with twoconcave ribs

supported by angular cantilevers. It opened to a lancet

arcade between buttresses (Fig. 5, 8a, b).

The facades were shaped on a plinth with a concave

stone profile. Above, there was a dripstone cornice which

formed the bottom splay on the buttresses and the edge of

window sill. The strip under the crowning cornice was

filled with a plastered frieze panel which was separated in

each bay in the strip over the buttress base (Fig. 5).

The interior was shaped in a onenave, twoaisled, hall,

and sevenbay layout. In the line of the former southern

wall of the aisle from the second half of the 13

century,

a row of seven pillars was erected, the last of which was

probably placed on the southeastern corner of the presby-

tery. The second row was situated in the axis of the former

nave. The last pair (eastern) was moved by approximately

1 m to the axis of the church, forming a closure of the

gallery. The interior was divided into one nave and two

aisles, the central of which was almost 5.5 m wide, and

the side ones of 4.3 (northern) and 4.0 m (southern).

Octagonal pillars were built every 3.5–4.3 m. They had

twoconcave bases made of ceramic fittings formed

before the burning. The face was carefully developed

with flat grout with a scratch. On the pillars, there were

lancet arcades with splayed jambs. Above the arches the

springs of the vaults were made which supported the

vault. In the main nave they were shaped as a barrel vault

with transverse lunettes, whereas in the aisles – as a cross

vault. The vaults had a ribbed decoration with volutes

going down on angular supports or with masks (in the

eastern bay of the gallery and in the extreme western,

in the body). In the nave and in the aisles a network sys-

tem was set, in the gallery – threesupport on three trian-

gles, and in the passage, it was cross, threesupport and

mixed crossthreesupport. In the bay on the axis of side

entrances, a hole in the vault was formed (the socalled

himmelloch) (Fig. 2a, b).

At the northern vestibule, probably a chapel was planned

to be built in two bays – opening to the interior with a pair

of lancet arcades with arches with splayed jambs. They are

preserved at the level of the present attic over the sacristy.

Within its area, the construction of two walls was planned,

for the connection of which special toothings were made

towards the north. Between the arcades, a narrow pillar

supporting the wall and the volute of the vault of the aisle

was formed. Above the arches there were also springs of

the vaults. At the implementation stage, this project was

abandoned and a twostorey structure housing the sacristy

and probably a founder’s and patron’s lodge (?) was locat-

ed there. In place of high ar cades, two lancet windows,

which were lowered in relation to the original arches were

introduced and lighted the upper room. At both levels,

two bays of crossribbed vaults were built and separated

by a wider rib. Volutes in the sacristy were supported by

zapewne parę okulusów (obecnie zachowane są dwa

wewnętrzne). Para kolejnych otrzymała wykrój ostrołucz

ny. W nich umieszczono tynkowane wnęki czteropolowe,

a powyżej poziome nawiązujące do układu płyciny fryzo-

wej. Powyżej ukształtowano zapewne prostokątną wnękę

– obecnie częściowo zachowaną. Blendy w trzech pozo 

stałych osiach zakomponowano podobnie, choć nie można

wy kluczyć, że środkowa mogła być wyższa. Umieszczono

w nich po dwie prostokątne, czteropolowe wnęki z krzy-

żem łacińskim, które rozdzielały poziome płyciny założo-

ne na tej samej wysokości co w osiach opisanych powyżej.

Nieznana pozostaje dekoracja okonturowania. Do wymu-

rowania krawędzi blend i płycin wystroju architektonicz-

nego szczytu użyto prostych cegieł (il. 1).

Po przebudowie ścian korpusu i prezbiterium u schył-

ku XV w. dostawiono do niego trzy kaplice: od połud nia

w osi przęsła zachodniego chóru przy kruchcie – Matki

Bo skiej Bolesnej, w korpusie, w trzecim od zachodu –

Mę ki Pańskiej oraz od północy po zachodniej stronie wie ży

– Świętokrzyską.

Dwie pierwsze ukształtowano jako niewielkie bryły.

Umieszczono je pomiędzy przyporami, wykorzystanymi

jako ściany boczne. W kaplicy Męki Pańskiej ściany bocz

ne przedłużono ku południu, tworząc wnętrze o wy mia 

rach około 3 × 4,5 m, otwierające się ostrołuczną arkadą

do korpusu. Prawdopodobnie założono w nim sklepienie

krzyżowe. Kaplicę doświetlono dużym oknem w ścianie

po łudniowej nakrytym łękiem odcinkowym grubości

cegły. Po jego wschodniej stronie zlokalizowano niewiel-

kie wejście o wykroju odcinkowym. W jego nadprożu

uży to dwóch łęków o grubości 1/2 cegły. Wystrój elewa-

cji składał się z cokołu o prostym profilu oraz gzymsu

ce gl anego będącego podstawą dachu pulpitowego nakry-

wającego bryłę.

Podobny układ otrzymała kaplica Matki Boskiej Bo 

lesnej. Jej ścianę południową, z oknem doświetlającym,

założono w jednej linii z elewacją kruchty. Wznie siono ją

na planie prostokąta o wymiarach wnętrza 2,5 × 5,5 m

i zapewne miała sklepienie krzyżowe. Wejście od strony

korpusu prze bito w ścianie obwodowej poniżej okna

i ukształtowano w formie ostrołucznej arkady. Praw do

podobnie wieńczył ją dach pulpitowy.

Największa z kaplic zrealizowanych pod koniec XV

lub na początku XVI w., pw. Świętego Krzyża, powstała

przy zachodniej elewacji wieży. W związku z jej budową

rozebrano przyporę założoną w osi filarów między dru-

gim a trzecim przęsłem korpusu (licząc od zachodu)

Za łożono ją na rzucie zbliżonym do kwadratu o wymia-

rach wnętrza 6,9 × 6,7 m i nakryto sklepieniem o niezna-

nym układzie żeber. Dostęp do niej umożliwiały dwa wejś

cia: od stro ny korpusu przebite w murze obwodowym

o nie znanym wykroju oraz drugie od północy o formie

dwóch ostrołucznych arkad opartych na środkowym fila-

rze. Jego ościeża ukształtowano jako rozglifione i otynko-

wano. Wysokie wnętrze doświetlały dwa ostrołuczne

okna po jednym od północy i zachodu.

Ślad po rozebranej skarpie widoczny jest na poziomie strychu

nad kaplicą.

angular cantilevers, whereas on the first floor – in the

form of fancy masks of mascarons. In connection with the

superstructure of the vestibule, a cross nonribbed vault

was built in the space above it (Fig. 8a, b).

The range of the body of the present sacristy was cor-

rected during the construction of the perimeter walls,

erecting its eastern wall in the northsouth line and adding

a floor over the northern vestibule. Facades received

a plinth with a stone concave profile – analogous to the

passage of the gallery. From the north, a pilaster strip was

placed in the line of the separating rib. On the ground

floor, facades with simple decoration formed narrow rec-

tangular windows with stone frames, i.e. two from the

north and one slightly wider from the east. On the first

floor, which was separated from the north by a frieze

panel and from the east by a dripstone cornice, there were

lancet windows with splayed jambs. On the longer facade,

due to the superstructure of the vestibule, three axially

designed windows were introduced, and one from the

east. The body was covered with a monopitched roof

supported by the body wall below the frieze panel.

The western facade decoration was also changed. The

upper part of the triangular gable of the church from the

second half of the 13

century was shortened by about

2/3 of the height. A new gable of a currently unknown

layout – perhaps with splayed jambs or splayedtriangular

one (?) was constructed on the entire width of the facade,

including also a fragment of the raised wall within the

southern aisle

. Its design consisted of lancet and rectan-

gular, foursegmented with Latin cross blind windows,

probably arranged in two stripes separated by horizontal

panels. The lowest storey was made by a panel covering

almost the entire width of the facade. Above it there were

regularly situated eleven blind windows, the extreme two

of which were probably rectangular. The next two were

shaped as lancet ones with plastered rectangular fourfield

in the background blind windows, whereas the other

seven with the analogous layout were formed as higher

(Fig. 1). The second storey was separated by a frieze panel.

In it blinds windows in at least seven axes were designed.

In the extreme ones there were slightly lower almost

semicircular ones and above them – probably a few ocu-

luses (currently two inner ones are preserved). A pair of

the next ones received a lancet shape. In them, fourfield

plastered niches were placed and above it a horizontal one

referring to the frieze panel layout. Above, probably a rec-

tangular niche was formed – currently partially preserved.

The blind windows in the other three axes were designed

similarly, although it cannot be ruled out that the middle

one could have been higher. Two rectangular, fourfield

niches with a Latin cross were placed in each of them,

which resulted in separating horizontal panels set at the

same height as in the axes described above. The decora-

tion of the contour remains unknown. Simple bricks were

used to build the edges of blind windows and panels of

the gable architectural decoration (Fig. 1).

The reconstruction of the original gable layout is difficult due to

the large extent of the rebuilding in the middle of the 19

century.

Bryłę wzmocniono narożną przyporą z półkolistą

wnę ką dostawioną przekątniowo już na etapie realizacji

w północnozachodnim narożniku. Jej dolną partię połą-

czono na wkute strzępia z narożnikiem kaplicy. Od za 

chodu wzniesiono szczyt o nieznanym układzie (us ko 

kowy?) z dekoracją składającą się z płyciny fryzowej oraz

co najmniej dwóch pasów prostokątnych, czteropolowych

wnęk dzielonych krzyżem łacińskim. Praw do podobnie

w najniższym było pięć wnęk z szerszą środkową, z któ-

rych zachowały się cztery. Kolejny pas tworzyły zapewne

cztery, z których uchwycono fragmenty dwóch. Warto

wspom nieć, że do wymurowania krawędzi blend oraz

pły ciny użyto cegieł. Można przypuścić, że tło wnęk oraz

płyciny było tynkowane.

Realizację Ogrójca, Ciemnicy i chóru zakonnic można

osadzić, zgodnie z zapiskami źródłowymi, w 1516 r. [4,

s. 1]. Wzdłuż południowej elewacji kościoła, między

kaplicami Matki Boskiej Bolesnej i Męki Pańskiej wznie-

siono dwuprzęsłową dwukondygnacyjną przybudówkę

o planie zbliżonym do prostokąta o wymiarach w obrysie

zewnętrznym 6,8 × 18,6 m. Jej część wschodnią, do kruch

ty południowej wypełniał Ogrójec. Pod arkadą ganka

w załomie między nim a kaplicą Męki Pańskiej zlo ka li

zowano natomiast Ciemnicę (il. 4, 8a, b).

Ogrójec wzniesiono, wykorzystując w przyziemiu mury

kaplicy Matki Boskiej Bolesnej i kruchty południowej,

a także ganka łączącego kościół z klasztorem magdalenek.

Wzdłuż południowej elewacji kaplicy i kruchty dostawio-

no dwuprzęsłowy podcień o planie wydłużonego prostoką-

ta o wymiarach 4,3 × 12,9 m otwierający się od wschodu

– jedną, a południa – dwoma ostrołucznymi ar kadami.

Na kryto go dwuprzęsłowym sklepieniem o zróżnicowa-

nym rysunku żeber: na osi wejścia krzyżowym, a przy ka 

plicy – sieciowym. Na piętrze ulokowano lożę (chór za 

konnic) otwierającą się do wnętrza prezbiterium dwoma

ostrołucznymi arkadami uskokowymi. Po wstały one po 

przez rozkucie dwóch okien. Jed no prze strzenne wnętrze

oś wietlały dwa ostrołuczne okna od południa. Od wschodu

na elewacji ukształtowano wnękę o wykroju oślego łęku.

Wnętrze zapewne nakryto dwuprzęsłowym sklepieniem

krzy żowym

. Dostęp na piętro wprost z nawy bocznej

umoż liwiały wąskie ceglane schody wciśnięte między ścia

nę boczną kruchty a ganek. Elewacja otrzymała detal, na

który złożyły się kamienny gzyms okapnikowy na ścianie

południowej, wspomniana już wnęka nakryta łękiem o for-

mie oślego grzbietu na ścianie wschodniej oraz druga –

z łękiem odcinkowym na skraju tej samej ściany (il. 5, 8a).

Po zachodniej stronie ganka zlokalizowano Ciemni

cę oraz Karcer. Ukształtowano je, wykorzystując arkadę

i filar ganka, a także ścianę boczną kaplicy Męki Pań

skiej, oraz wznosząc nową ścianę w narożniku południo-

wozachodnim. Wnętrze Ciemnicy nakryto sklepieniem

ko leb kowym. W narożu nowo wzniesionej ściany wpro-

wadzono niewielką wieżyczkę. Lico ściany południowej

wy sunięto za po mocą schodkowych uskoków w kolej-

nych warstwach muru ceglanego.

Obecne skle pie nie powstało w baroku, zapewne po pożarze

w 1706 r. Osadzo no je w gotyckich oporach.

After the reconstruction of the walls of the body and

presbytery at the end of the 15

century, three chapels

were added to it, i.e. Our Lady of Sorrows on the south in

the bay axis of the western gallery next to the vestibule,

then in the body in the third from the west – Passion of

Jesus Chapel and from the north on the west side of the

tower – Świętokrzyska Chapel.

The first two were shaped as small forms. They were

placed between the buttresses using them as side walls.

In the Passion of Jesus Chapel, the side walls were

extended towards the south, creating an interior measur-

ing approximately 3 × 4.5 m and opening to the body by

a lancet arcade. Probably a cross vault was built in it. The

chapel was lighted with a large window in the southern

wall, which was covered with a 1brick thick sectional

arch. On its eastern side, a small entrance with a sectional

pattern was located. In its lintel, two 1/2 brick thick arch-

es were used. The facade decoration consisted of a plinth

with a simple profile and a brick cornice being the base of

the monopitched roof covering the body.

Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel had a similar layout. Its

southern wall along with a lighting window was set in one

line with the vestibule facade. It was constructed on a rec-

tangular plan with the interior dimension of 2.5 × 5.5 m

and it probably had a ribbed vault. The entrance from the

body side was made in the perimeter wall below the win-

dow and shaped in the form of a lancet arcade. Probably

it was crowned with a monopitched roof.

The largest of the chapels, which was realised at the

end of the 15

or at the beginning of the 16

century, i.e.

the Holy Cross Chapel, was constructed at the western

facade of the tower. In connection with its construction,

the buttress which was founded in the axis of pillars

between the second and third bay of the body was pulled

down (counting from the west)

. It was founded on a plan

similar to a square with the interior dimensions of

6.9 × 6.7 m and covered with a vault with an unknown

layout of ribs. Access to it was made possible by two

entrances, i.e. from the side of the body made in the

pe rimeter wall of an unknown shape and the second from

the north shaped in the form of two lancet arcades which

were supported by the central pillar. Its jambs were shaped

as milled and plastered. The high interior was lit by two

lancet windows one from the north and one from the west.

The body was reinforced with a corner buttress with

a semicircular niche which was added diagonally already

at the implementation stage in the northwestern corner.

Its lower part was connected to the chapel’s corner by

means of inserted toothings. On the west there was a gable

with an unknown layout (with splayed jambs?) with a dec-

oration consisting of a frieze panel and at least two rectan-

gular strips, fourfield niches divided by a Latin cross,

was. Probably in the lowest one there were five niches

with one wider in the middle and only four were pre-

served. The next strip probably consisted of four and

the fragments of two of them were preserved. It is worth

Niewielkie zmiany przeprowadzono w przyziemiu

wieży w okresie renesansu, zapewne w 2. połowie XVI w.

Przewężono wtedy zachodnie ościeże otworu wejścio

wego z nawy.

Dla rozważań o architekturze kościoła ważne są dwa

pożary, które niemal doszczętnie strawiły miasto: pierw-

szy z 19 czerwca 1672 r. oraz drugi z 23 czerwca 1702 r.

[8, s. 99]. Szczególnie dotkliwy był pierwszy – zniszcze-

niu uległo niemal całe wyposażenie świątyni, ocalała

jedynie zakrystia [10, s. 219]. Zapisy w księgach wydat-

ków parafii z lat 1672–1676 zawierają nazwiska rze-

mieślników zatrudnionych przy odbudowie [32, sygn.

867]. Architektem nadzorującym prace w kościele był

mistrz Dawid. Adam Tietze kierował robotami ciesielski-

mi przy odbudowie więźb dachowych korpusu, kaplic

i nowego barokowego hełmu wieży.

Z dokumentów archiwalnych wynika, że po 1672 r.

zamurowano istniejące wejście zachodnie prowadzące

przez ostrołuczny portal. Prawdopodobnie zablokowano

także znajdujący się powyżej okulus. Równocześnie prze-

bito nowe wejście, obecnie użytkowane, na osi nawy

głów nej. W skrajnym zachodnim przęśle korpusu założo-

no chór organowy. Oparto go na łękach wzniesionych

po między ścianami obwodowymi a filarami międzyna-

wowymi. Balkon chóru wprowadzono w zasięgu zachod-

niego przęsła trzech naw. Wejście w postaci zabiegowych

schodów umieszczono przy częściowo zablokowanym

ostrołucznym oknie w elewacji zachodniej (okno kaplicy

z połowy XIV w.).

Kolejne zmiany objęły zakrystię, gdzie w miejscu daw 

nej ściany wschodniej kruchty północnej wprowadzo no no 

wy podział, który częściowo przesłonił malowidło przed sta 

wia jące

św. Jerzego. Wydzielono także murowane scho dy

do pomieszczenia nad zakrystią oraz wąski korytarz łą 

czący ją z kruchtą. Przy ścianie prezbiterium po wstał nie-

wielki schowek.

Po stronie południowej w zasięgu przybudówek zmie-

niono artykulację elewacji. Zamurowano okno i drzwi

kaplicy Męki Pańskiej. W związku ze zniszczeniem wie 

życzki

przy Karcerze odbudowano jego narożnik i za blo

kowano przejście od strony Ciemnicy.

Wprowadzono także przekształcenia w wieży. W przy-

ziemiu przebito nowy otwór wejściowy od strony kruch-

ty. Równocześnie zlikwidowano dotychczasowy od stro-

ny korpusu. Zmieniono również formę zwieńczenia.

Za murowano blankowanie obiegające koronę oraz wznie-

siono ścianę z wydatnym profilowanym gzymsem. Na

niej i na konstrukcji drewnianej opartej na ścianach ob 

wo dowych założono hełm o formie kopuły z ośmiobocz-

ną latarnią z cebulką. W jej szczycie osadzono maszt ze

złoconą gałką i krzyżem. Hełm oraz latarnię pokryto bla-

chą (il. 7).

Przebudowę kaplicy Świętego Krzyża zrealizowano

prawdopodobnie w latach 80. XVII w. i objęła ona elewa-

cje oraz wnętrze. Na elewacjach zablokowano istniejące

wejście od północy i oba ostrołuczne okna. W ich miejsce

przebito dwa mniejsze, półkoliste ujęte w tynkowe opaski

z rantem. Wnętrze otrzymało nowe sklepienie kolebkowe

z lunetami. Ponadto w narożnikach północnych wymuro-

wano ukośne ściany z półkolistymi niszami (il. 8a, b, 10).

mentioning that bricks were used to shape the edges of the

blind windows and the panel. It can be assumed that the

background of niches and panels was plastered.

The implementation of Gethsemane, the Altar of

Repose, and the nuns’ gallery can be traced back, in

accordance with the source notes, to 1516 [4, p. 1]. Along

the southern facade of the church, between the Our Lady

of Sorrows and Passion of Jesus Chapels, a twobay and

twostorey extension was erected with a plan similar to

a rectangle with dimensions in the outer contour of

6.8 × 18.6 m. Its eastern part was filled with Gethsemane

up to the southern vestibule. However, under the arcade of

the porch in the curve between it and the Passion of Jesus

Chapel, the Altar of Repose was located (Fig. 4, 8a, b).

Gethsemane was erected with the use of Our Lady of

Sorrows Chapel walls and the southern vestibule walls in

the basement as well as the porch connecting the church

with the convent of Madeleines. Along the southern

facade of the chapel and the vestibule, a twobay arcade

with an elongated rectangular plan with dimensions of

4.3 × 12.9 m was added, which opened from the east with

one and from the south with two lancet arcades. It was

covered with a twobay vault with a diversified drawing

of ribs, i.e. on the axis of the entrance it was a ribbed vault

and at the chapel the net one. On the first floor there was

a lodge (gallery of nuns) which opened to the presbytery

interior with two lancet arcades with splayed jambs. They

were created by breaking two windows. The singlespace

interior was lighted by two lancet windows from the

south. From the east, an ogee niche was shaped on the

facade. The interior was most probably covered with a two

bay cross vault

. Narrow brick stairs which were wedged

between the side wall of the vestibule and the porch made

it possible to get to the first floor directly from the aisle.

The facade had detail consisting of a stone dripstone cor-

nice on the southern wall, the already mentioned niche

covered with an ogee arch on the eastern wall and the

second one with a sectional arch on the edge of the same

wall (Fig. 5, 8a).

On the western side of the porch, the Altar of Repose

and Solitary Confinement Cell were located. They were

shaped with the use of the arcade and the porch’s pillar as

well as the side wall of the of the Passion of Jesus Chapel,

and by erecting a new wall in the southwestern corner.

The interior of the Altar of Repose was covered with

a barrel vault. A small turret was constructed in the corner

of the newly erected wall. The face of the southern wall

was protruded by means of stepped splays which were

shaped in successive layers of the brick wall.

Insignificant changes were carried out in the basement

of the tower during the Renaissance period, probably in

the second half of the 16

century. The western jamb of

the entrance opening from the nave was then narrowed.

For the purposes of our study on the church architec-

ture, two fires which almost completely destroyed the city

were of great importance, i.e. the first took place on June 19,

The current vault was constructed in the Baroque period, proba-

bly after the fire in 1706. It was embedded in Gothic springs.

Zasięg prac wykonanych w XIX w. wyznacza zastoso-

wana cegła maszynowa. Można wskazać trzy główne

zakresy realizowanych wtedy robót: budowa kruchty

zachodniej, portali od południa do Ogrójca i do kruchty

północnej, naprawa okonturowania szczytu zachodniego

z przyporami oraz zawieszenie dzwonów na wieży. Reali

zacja dwóch pierwszych zadań przeprowadzona została

zapewne przed 9 września 1861 r. – z tego dnia pochodzi

rysunek F. von Quasta przedstawiający kościół w widoku

od zachodu.

Zapewne około połowy XIX w. wzniesiono kruchtę

przed zachodnim wejściem do kościoła. Otrzymała ona

plan zbliżony do prostokąta o wymiarach w obrysie ze 

wnętrz nym 3 × 3,9 m. Wejście od zachodu ujęto w ostro-

łuczny portal o przecinających się profilach. Powyżej

za komponowano szczyt uskokowy o pięciu ostrołucz-

nych wnękach. We wnętrzu, oświetlonym dwoma oknami

ostrołucznymi od północy i południa, założono sklepienie

krzyżowe o żebrach w układzie gwiaździstym.

Zapewne w podobnym okresie wykonano obramie

nia wejścia do kruchty północnej z trójkątnym ryzalitem

oraz do Ogrójca w osi kruchty. Pozostałe dwa otwory

o trzy mały tynkowe obramienia kostkowe. Zamurowano

tak że otwory drzwiowe prowadzące do Ciemnicy oraz ka 

plicy Męki Pańskiej.

1672 and the other on June 23, 1702 [8, p. 99]. Particu 

larly severe was the first one because nearly all the equip-

ment of the church was destroyed and the only place that

survived was the sacristy [10, p. 219]. Entries in the

expenditure books of the parish from the years 1672–1676

contain the names of craftsmen employed during the

reconstruction [32, File No. 867]. The architect who

supervised the work in the church was Master David.

A. Tietze managed the carpentry works during the recon-

struction of the roof trusses of the body, chapels, and the

new Baroque copula of the tower.

Archival documents show that after 1672 the existing

western entrance through the lancet portal was bricked

up. Probably the oculus above it was also blocked. At the

same time, a new entrance, currently in use, was made on

the nave axis. An organ gallery was founded in the west-

ernmost bay of the body. It was based on the arches erect-

ed between the perimeter walls and pillars between the

nave and aisles. The gallery balcony was constructed

within the western bay of the nave and aisles. The entrance

in the form of doglegged stairs was situated at the

partially blocked lancet window in the western facade

(the chapel window from the mid14

century).

The next changes comprised the sacristy where in the

place of the former eastern wall of the northern vestibule

a new division was introduced which partially obscured

the painting depicting Saint George. There were also

brick stairs leading to a room above the sacristy and a nar-

row corridor connecting it with the vestibule. There was

a small storage space by the presbytery wall.

On the southern side within the area of the annexes, the

facade shape was changed. The window and the door to

the Passion of Jesus Chapel were bricked up. In connec-

tion with the destruction of the turret near the Solitary

Confinement Cell, its corner was rebuilt and the passage

from the Altar of Repose side was blocked.

Transformations were also introduced in the tower.

A new entrance opening was made from the side of the

vestibule. At the same time, the former one was liquidated

from the side of the body. The form of the finial was also

changed. Battlements surrounding the crown were bricked

up and a wall with a prominent profiled cornice was

erected. On it and on a wooden structure based on pe 

rimeter walls, a cover in the form of a copula with an

octa gonal lantern with an “onion” was founded. A mast

with a goldplated knob and a cross was set in its top. The

copula and the lantern were covered with sheet metal

(Fig. 7).

Probably the reconstruction of the Holy Cross Chapel

was realised in the 1880s and it covered the facades and

the interior. On the facades, the existing entrance from the

north and both lancet windows were blocked. In their

place, two smaller ones were made, i.e. semicircular sur-

rounded by plastered strips with a rim. The interior

received a new barrel vault with lunettes. Moreover, diag-

onal walls with semicircular niches were built in the

northern corners (Fig. 8a, b, 10).

The scope of the works carried out in the 19

century

is determined by the use of machine brick. Three main

scopes of the works carried out at that time can be

Prawdopodobnie w tym samym okresie przeprowa

dzono naprawę elewacji zachodniej. Szczyt obniżono i ro 

ze brano jego pierwotne okonturowanie z niektórymi ele

men tami wystroju. Zapewne obniżono środkową wnękę

do po ziomu dwóch sąsiadujących. W dwóch kolejnych

osiach częściowo zablokowano prostokątne blendy i zlik

widowano skrajne okulusy. Poniżej płyciny fryzowej czę-

ściowo zablokowano wnęki w skrajnych osiach. Prze mu

rowano także górne partie ukośnych przypór w narożach

elewacji zachodniej oraz ujmujących północnozachod

nie naroże kaplicy Świętego Krzyża – przy użyciu cha rak

te rys tycznej mocno wypalonej cegły w odcieniu wiś nio 

wobrązowym.

Trzeci etap prac remontowych zrealizowano w trakcie

zawieszania na wieży zespołu dzwonów. Na elewacji

zachodniej rozkuto jedno z okien w celu wprowadzenia

dzwonów wraz z konstrukcją nośną. Ostrołuczny otwór

odtworzono z partią lica. We wnętrzu wieży podwyższo-

no ścianę o mniej więcej 1,5 m na poziomie +18,4 pod

konstrukcję nośną. Przemurowano także fragment trzonu

kamiennego pod uskokiem odsadzki gzymsu (?). Za 

blokowano płycinę fryzową w zasięgu nadbudowy z poło-

wy XIV w. umieszczonej poniżej trzech ostrołucznych

wnęk, ze względu na powiększenie środkowego okna.

Na elewacjach wykonano naprawy lica m.in. u podsta-

wy szczytu zachodniego, w zwieńczeniu jednej z przypór

narożnych, a także na elewacji północnej zakrystii.

Ponadto zablokowano wnęki na przyporze narożnej przy

Podsumowanie

Przeprowadzone badania architektoniczne kościoła pa 

ra fialnego w Szprotawie umożliwiły wydzielenie głów-

nych faz przekształceń świątyni. Jej początki można osa-

dzić w 2. po łowie XIII w., kiedy to powstał złożony

z pro stokątnego chóru oraz trójprzęsłowej nawy kościół,

z któ rego zachowana jest ściana zachodnia z portalem

i oku lusem, a także północna z oknem z maswerkiem oraz

dru gim portalem. Przy północnej ścianie w 1. połowie

XIV w. wzniesiono wieżę z kaplicą w przyziemiu. Około

połowy

stulecia świątynię powiększono o pas trzech

ka 

plic od południa i kruchtę przed wejściem północnym.

Wtedy także podwyższono wieżę. Druga połowa XIV w.

przyniosła budowę ganka łączącego kościół z klasztorem.

Kolejne kondygnacje wieży z blankowaniem pojawiły się

natomiast około połowy XV w. Reali zacja obecnego trój-

nawowego siedmioprzęsłowego korpusu halowego bez

wydzielonego chóru z wielobocznym obejściem i dwupo-

ziomową zakrystią nastąpiła zapewne w latach 1474–

1488. Praw dopodobnie wtedy założono sklepienie sie cio

we we wnęt rzu. Po 1488 r. przy elewacjach powstały trzy

kaplice: od pół no cy przy wieży pw. Świętego Krzy ża,

a od południa Matki Boskiej Bo lesnej i Męki Pań skiej.

W 1516 r. zbudowano kaplice: Ogrójec, Ciem nicę i Karcer

tals from the south to Gethsemane and the northern vesti-

bule, a repair of the western summit gable contour with

buttresses as well as hanging bells on the tower. The reali-

sation of the first two tasks was probably carried out before

September 9, 1861 – a drawing by F. von Quast depicting

the church seen from the west comes from that day.

Most probably around the mid19

century, a vesti bule

in front of the western entrance to the church was erect-

ed. It received a plan similar to a rectangle with dimen 

sions in the outer contour of 3 × 3.9 m. The entrance from

the west was enclosed in a lancet portal with intersect

ing profiles. Above, a gable with splayed jambs and with

five lancet niches was designed. In the interior, which was

lighted by two lancet windows from the north and south,

a cross vault with ribs in the stellar layout was con

structed.

We can assume that in a similar period the framings of

the entrance to the northern vestibule with a triangular

avantcorps as well as to Gethsemane in the axis of the

vestibule were made. The other two openings received

plaster cube framings. Also, the door openings leading to

the Altar of Repose and the Passion of Jesus Chapel were

bricked up.

Probably the western facade was repaired during the

same period. The gable was lowered, and its original con-

touring was demolished along with some elements of the

decor. It is possible that the central niche was lowered to

the level of the two neighbouring ones. On two successive

axes, rectangular blind windows were partially blocked

and extreme oculuses were removed. Below the frieze

panel the niches on the extreme axes were partially

blocked. The upper parts of diagonal buttresses in the cor-

ners of the western facade and the ones enclosing the

northwestern corner of the Holy Cross Chapel were also

changed by using the characteristic strongly burnt brick in

cherry brown colour.

The third stage of renovation works was carried out

during the hanging of the bells on the tower. On the west-

ern facade, one of the windows was enlarged to introduce

bells together with the supporting structure. The lancet

hole was reconstructed with the face part. In the interior

of the tower, the wall was raised by about 1.5 m at the

level of +18.4 under the supporting structure. A fragment

of the stone shaft was also rebricked under the splay of

the cornice step (?). The frieze panel was blocked within

the range of the superstructure from the mid14

century

which was located below three lancet niches due to the

enlargement of the central window.

On the facades, repairs of the face were carried out,

inter alia, at the base of the western gable, in the finial of

one of the corner buttresses, and also on the facade of the

northern sacristy. Moreover, the niches on the corner but-

tress at Świętokrzyska Chapel and at Gethsemane were

blocked

It cannot be ruled out that also in this period a dripstone cornice

was demolished, which formed the lower splayed jambs on buttresses

and the edges of window sills of the presbytery passage.

Summary

Architectural research, which was carried out on the

parish church in Szprotawa, enabled the separation of the

main phases of the church’s transformation. Its origins

can be traced back to the second half of the 13

century,

when the church was founded and consisted of a rectan-

gular gallery as well as of a threebay nave. Its western

wall along with the portal and oculus are preserved as

well as the northern one with a window with tracery and

the second portal. At the northern wall in the first half of

the 14

century, a tower with a chapel in the basement

was erected. Around the middle of the century, the church

was enlarged by a belt of three chapels from the south and

a vestibule in front of the northern entrance. At that time

the tower was also made higher. In the second half of the

century the construction of a porch which connected

the church with the convent took place. However, the next

floors of the tower with blanking appeared around the

mid15

century. Undoubtedly, the implementation of the

present onenave, twoaisled, sevenbay hall structure

without a separate gallery with a polygonal passage and

a twolevel sacristy took place in the years 1474–1488.

Probably then, the net vault in the interior was constructed.

After 1488, three chapels were erected near the facades,

i.e. from the north at the Holy Cross Tower and from the

south the Our Lady of Sorrows and Passion of Jesus

Chapels. In 1516, Gethsemane, the Solitary Confinement

Cell and the Altar of Repose Chapels as well as a lodge for

the Madeleine nuns were constructed. Modern transforma-

tions of the Renaissance period included the narrowing of

the entrance to the tower. In the Baroque, the Świętokrzyska

Chapel was transformed by introducing semicircular

niches, windows, and a barrel vault with lunettes. In the

body, the present entrance on the axis of the nave was

made and an organ gallery was founded in the western bay.

The tower was also raised and covered with a dome with

a clearance crowned with an “onion” shaped dome. The

vestibule of neoGothic forms at the western facade

appeared around the middle of the 19

century. At the

same time, new framing of the entrances to the northern

and southern vestibules was made as well as of the openings

near Gethsemane. Still before 1860, the western gable

was renovated, which changed its contour. When hanging

new bells on the tower, one of the window openings was

broken and some of the western facade as well as the step

along with the cornice got a new face.

Despite the multistage transformations, the church has

preserved its medieval lategothic form. Annexes adjacent

to the body on the southern side, which are connected

with the Mystery of the Passion of the Lord (Our Lady of

Sorrows, Gethsemane, Solitary Confinement Cell, Passion

of Jesus Chapels) form a very interesting and unique lay-

out. Gethsemane, whose interior opening through two

lancet arcades provides an opportunity to view it directly

from the church yard, is particularly valuable.

Pod wyż szono także wieżę, nakrywając ją kopulastym

o formach neogotyckich przy fasadzie za chod niej pojawi-

ła się około połowy XIX w. Równolegle wy konano nowe

obramienia wejść do kruchty północnej i po łudniowej,

a także otworów przy Ogrójcu. Jeszcze przed

z gzymsem.

Pomimo wieloetapowych przekształceń kościół zacho-

wał swoją średniowieczną, późnogotycką formę. Bardzo

interesujący i unikatowy układ tworzą przybudówki

przylegające do korpusu po stronie południowej, a zwią-

zane z Misterium Męki Pańskiej (kaplica Matki Boskiej

Bolesnej, Ogrójec, Ciemnica, kaplica Męki Pańskiej).

Cenny jest zwłaszcza Ogrójec, którego wnętrze otwiera-

jące się poprzez dwie ostrołuczne arkady daje możliwość

wglądu wprost z placu przykościelnego.

Streszczenie

W artykule zaprezentowano historię powstania kościoła paraalnego w Szprotawie oraz jego przekształcenia od XIII do XX w. We wstępie przedsta-

wiono wzmianki źródłowe oraz dostępną literaturę przedmiotu – w niewielkim zakresie omawiającą ewolucję architektury świątyni. Na podstawie

przeprowadzonych badań architektonicznych i analizy detalu wydzielono najważniejsze fazy przekształceń kościoła. Początki budowli osadzono

w 2. połowie XIII w., gdy powstała świątynia złożona z prostokątnego chóru oraz trójprzęsłowej nawy. Zapewne w 1. połowie XIV w. przy północnej

ścianie wzniesiono wieżę z kaplicą w przyziemiu, a w połowie stulecia korpus rozbudowano od południa o trzy kaplice oraz kruchtę przed wejściem

północnym. Druga połowa XIV w. to powstanie ganka łączącego kościół z klasztorem magdalenek. Najwyższą kondygnację wieży z blankowaniem

zrealizowano w połowie XV w. Budowę obecnego trójnawowego siedmioprzęsłowego korpusu halowego bez wydzielonego chóru z wielobocznym

obejściem i sklepieniami sieciowymi oraz dwupoziomową zakrystią przeprowadzono zapewne w latach 1474–1488. Po tym roku przy elewacji

południowej powstały dwie kaplice: Matki Boskiej Bolesnej i Męki Pańskiej, a przy północnej – jedna pw. Świętego Krzyża, a w 1516 r. Ogrójec

z Ciemnicą i Karcerem oraz lożą dla sióstr magdalenek. Przekształcenia renesansowe objęły zwężenie wejścia do kaplicy w przyziemiu wieży,

a barokowe – nowy wystrój wnętrza kaplicy Świętokrzyskiej, przebicie obecnego wejścia na osi nawy głównej, budowę chóru organowego oraz

nowy hełm wieży. W połowie XIX w. zmieniono wystrój szczytu i wprowadzono kruchtę zachodnią.

Abstract

The article presents the history of the creation and transformation of the parish church in Szprotawa from 13

until the 20

century. The introduc-

tion discusses the source references and the accesible literature – in a small extent discussing the evolution of the temple architecture. Based on

architectural studies and details analyses, the most important phases of the church’s transformation have been identied. The origins of the building

were erected in the 2

half of the 13

century, when a temple composed of a rectangular choir and a threespan nave was erected. Probably in

the 1

half of the 14

century, a tower with a chapel on the ground oor was built by the northern wall and in the middle of the century, the body

was extended from the south by three chapels and a porch in front of the northern entrance. The 2

half of the 14

century brought the creation of

a porch connecting the church with the Madeleine convent. The highest storey of the tower with blanking was built in the middle of the 15

century.

The construction of the present threenave sevenbay hall structure without a separate choir with a polygonal bypass and vaults and a twotiered

sacristy was probably carried out in the years 1474–1488. After this year, two chapels: of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Passion of the Lord were built

by the south elevation, and at the northern one – the Holy Cross chapel. And in 1516 the following were built: Gethsemane, Dungeon and Detenc-

tion, and a lodge for the Madeleine sisters. The Renaissance transformations included narrowing of the entrance to the chapel on the ground oor of

the tower, and the Baroque changes – a new interior decoration of the Holy Cross chapel, breaking through for the present entrance on the axis

of the main nave, building the organ’s choir and the new tower’s helmet. In the middle of the 19

century, the decoration of the gable was changed

and the western porch was introduced.
