Abstract

Ronow Castle in Trzciniec near Bogatynia, associated with the noble Ronovec family (Ronovci), played a crucial political and military role in the region from the 13th to 15th centuries, yet remains poorly recognized in Polish academic literature.

This article presents the results of interdisciplinary research conducted in 2022. The scope of work included archival research, critical study of previous works, and analysis of architectural relics and landscape conditions. Traditional historical methodology was applied in combination with modern spatial documentation techniques (terrestrial photogrammetry, aerial laser scanning LiDAR).

As a result of the research, a functional division of the castle area into four zones was established: forefield, external fortifications, outer bailey, and the main castle proper. Multi-phase development traces of the complex were confirmed, including relics of defensive walls, communication systems, and cellars. Additionally, new architectural elements were identified, including a two-story structure in the non-basement part of the castle. The results also enabled verification of some previous hypotheses, particularly regarding the construction of external fortifications and the alleged existence of a transverse wall with a tower projecting beyond the outer bailey. However, detailed chronological stratification was not resolved. The article’s authors indicated the need for continued research, especially using geophysical and archaeological methods, for a more complete reconstruction of Ronow Castle’s history and architecture.
