Abstract

This article describes the relationship between active perception of space and hand-drawing, with particular emphasis on their role in developing creative skills of architects. There are four categories of vision and their respective modes of artistic record. All of them are described on the basis of examples of W. Weiss, Z. Herbert, contemporary architects (including T. Głowacki) and student work. Attention was drawn to certain distinctness and at the same time complementing these attitudes in the final shaping of the active, creative attitude of perception of space, called Active Eye.

The art of observation and drawing

Introduction. Categories of observation

The connections between observations and depictions

– drawings are very close and they exist at various levels.

One can multiply questions and research perspectives. It

is obvious that in order to draw you must be able to see.

However, is it true that in order to see you must be able to

draw? You will see that such a claim is also reasonable.

The perspective connected with architectural education

suggests a reflection over various types of vision or obser-

vation and its pictorial record. We will present a few ex -

amples to illustrate that variety. Observation itself will be

understood in its broad meaning. Apart from its merely

physical aspect, observation shall include the participa-

tion of other senses in the perception of space combined

with the intellectual factor which allows for its ordering

Vision is often a metaphor of cognition. Such an attitude is con-

nected with historically proven primacy of vision. Due to the size of this

to dissect it in his mind’s and put it together again;

or if he is drawing from memory, that forces him to dredge his own mind,

Wstęp. Kategorie widzenia

Związki między widzeniem a obrazowaniem – ryso-

waniem są bardzo ścisłe, ale i wielowątkowe. Można

mno żyć pytania i perspektywy badań. Za oczywiste przyj-

muje się, że aby umieć rysować, trzeba umieć pa trzeć.

A czy prawdą jest, że aby umieć patrzeć, trzeba umieć ry 

sować? Pokażemy, że takie stwierdzenie też jest zasadne.

Perspektywa związana z edukacją architektonicz

ną pod powiada kierunek refleksji nad różnymi typami

stawimy kilka przypadków, które tę różnorodność ilustru-

There are four categories of observation and imaging con-

nected with it which have the following names in the se -

quence of their appearance in the text: sensory eye, atten-

tive eye as well as creative, inner eye and autonomic eye.

They all overlap and complete one another, being the

characteristic features of active observation, typical of the

wide open eye

. In the conclusion we will draw your atte-

n tion to the significance of those types of perception of

space in education of students of architecture and return

to the thesis put forward at the beginning.

The sensory eye – Wojciech Weiss

The drawings by Wojciech Weiss created during his

“painting pilgrimages” to Venice are a great example

of synthetic sketches from nature done under the influ-

ence of temporary impressions, the townscape, its atmos-

phere, light and city life

. The graphic notes made with

a lively, quick, sort of impatient line are a record of the

fascination of the painter, a sensitive observer. Such

a character of the sketches demonstrates the process of

perception of the artist who eagerly soaked up the world

around him. The author adequately rendered also the spe-

cial character of the connections between the architecture

of Venice and water as well as atmosphere. Each line on

the paper seems to whirl and dance the same way as the

constantly moving shadows and reflections of all surfaces

and shapes in the water (Fig. 1). All impressions are only

momentary. Woj ciech Weiss marked them in the drawing

by barely visible traces and quick touches of the paper so

well that the viewers willingly follow the images created

by the painter, learning about space from those pictorial

“stories” about architecture and senses.

The above-mentioned examples of works by Weiss can

be used as a great template as well as a pretext for a reflec-

tion over the difference in perception, its effects depend-

ing on whether they were drawn from nature or in quiet

studios on the basis of photographs or from imagination.

Open-air drawing workshops provide the students of

architecture with an opportunity to make sketches out-

doors in special conditions of direct contact with space.

Such a situation offers a chance to extend the visual sensa-

tions to include the sensations captured with all other

senses. The atmospheric conditions, sounds, smells, traffic

paper we will not expound on that topic in detail and we will limit our-

selves to the claim that in our deliberations the eye shall mean a kind of

whole “apparatus” of observation together with the sensory perception of

space and intellectual skill to put it in order. The issues regarding the

connections between perception and drawing focuses by the definition on

vision so that such a perspective seems justified.

A lot of inspiration for the paper came from the classic works by

Rudolf Arnheim on visual psychology and the theory of art. The author

connected the features of vision and perception of space with thinking

and visual arts. He built the theoretical basis for the reflection over

visual observations and graphic records of that process which is the area

which this paper regards [2], [3].

Weiss visited Venice a number of times in the 1920s and the

1930s. He remained under the influence of its cityscape which he ex -

pressed in his paintings, drawings, wood engravings, lithographs and

monotype images, as well as poems and photographs. Serenissima Woj

Zmysłowe oko – Wojciech Weiss

Rysunki Wojciecha Weissa powstałe podczas jego

„malarskich pielgrzymek” do Wenecji są znakomitym

przykładem syntetycznych szkiców z natury, rysowanych

pod wpływem chwilowych wrażeń, pejzażu miasta, jego

atmosfery, światła i toczącego się tam życia

. Graficzne

notatki skreślone żywą, szybką, jakby niecierpliwą kreską

to zapis fascynacji malarza, wrażliwego obserwatora.

Taki charakter szkiców oddaje proces percepcji artysty,

który z pełnym zaangażowaniem, łapczywie chłonął oto-

czenie. Autor trafnie oddał też szczególny charakter związ

ków architektury Wenecji z wodą i atmosferą. Każ da kre-

ska na papierze wydaje się wirować, tańczyć tak samo jak

w nieustannym ruchu pozostają cienie i odbicia w wodzie

wszystkich płaszczyzn i konturów (il. 1). Każde ulotne

wrażenie podlega jedynie chwili. Na rysunku zapisane

zostało ledwie widocznym śladem, krótkim gestem dot

knię cia arkusza. U Wojciecha Weissa tak trafnym, że od 

biorca z chęcią podąża za wizerunkiem stworzonym przez

malarza, czerpiąc wiedzę o przestrzeni z tych rysunko-

wych „opowiadań” o architekturze i zmysłach.

Przytoczone tu przykłady dzieł Weissa mogą posłużyć

jako znakomity wzór i jednocześnie pretekst do refleksji

nad różnicą w percepcji, jej efektami zależnie od tego,

czy były rysowane z natury czy też w zaciszu pracowni,

na podstawie zdjęć czy z wyobraźni.

Plenery rysunkowe, w których uczestniczą studenci ar 

w naturze, w szczególnych warunkach bezpośredniego

jest z historycznie utrwalonym prymatem wzroku. Ze względu na obję-

tość artykułu nie będziemy szczegółowo rozwijać tego wątku i ograni-

czymy się do stwierdzenia, że w naszych rozważaniach oko będziemy

rozumieli jako pewien całokształt „aparatu” obserwacji wraz ze zmy

słowym odbiorem przestrzeni oraz intelektualną zdolnością jej porząd ko

wania. Problematyka związków percepcji z obrazowaniem siłą rzeczy na

wzroku się skupia, tak więc taka perspektywa wydaje się uzasadniona.

Dużą inspiracją dla artykułu były klasyczne już pozycje Rudolfa

Arnheima z dziedziny psychologii widzenia i teorii sztuki. Autor powią-

zał cechy widzenia, percepcji przestrzeni z myśleniem i sztukami pla-

stycznymi. Zbudował teoretyczne podstawy do refleksji nad widzeniem

i graficznym zapisem tego procesu, co stanowi obszar, w którym poru-

szamy się w niniejszym tekście [2], [3].

Weiss wielokrotnie był w Wenecji w latach 20. i 30. XX w. Po 

zostawał pod wpływem jej pejzażu, czemu dawał wyraz w swojej twór 

czości malarskiej, rysunkowej, drzeworytach, litografiach i monotypiach,

ale też w wierszach i na zdjęciach. Pracom tym została poświęcona

pu -

blikacja Serenissima Wojciecha Weissa [4].

of people or vehicles comprise the whole atmosphere of

the place which affects the ultimate emotional attitude of

the observer. All those elements shape the complete pic-

ture of the surroundings which subsequently, under the

influence of that sensory perception, leaves its direct

imprint on paper. A landscape drawing made in a cozy

studio will never demonstrate that degree of natural,

lively expression which is so characteristic of a sketch

made in the open air. While drawing from nature and in

nature, the author becomes a participant in a kind of space

game which takes place around him. It is difficult to cut

yourself off from all sensory stimuli coming from outside.

This is a different story in a studio where the author can

focus easily on a studied object or his internal vision,

separate that relationship from the other spatial elements.

The conditions of the interior favor the observation based

on contemplation and at the same time it is easier to create

on the basis of intellectual and imaginative concepts. That

is why sketches drawn from nature are a highly precious

source of record of sensations experienced by individuals

ne, dźwięki, zapachy, ruch ludzi czy pojazdów składają

się na pełną atmosferę miejsca, która wpływa na ostatecz-

ny stosunek emocjonalny obserwatora. Wtedy kształtuje

się pełny obraz otoczenia, który następnie, pod wpływem

tej zmysłowej percepcji, bezpośrednio zostawia ślad na

ar kuszu. Rysunek pejzażu wykonany w zacisznym wnę-

trzu nigdy nie będzie zawierał tego stopnia naturalnej,

żywiołowej ekspresji, którą charakteryzuje się szkic po w-

stały w plenerze. Podczas rysowania z natury i w naturze

autor staje się uczestnikiem pewnej gry przestrzennej,

któ ra toczy się wokół niego. Trudno jest odciąć się od

wszel kich bodźców zmysłowych płynących z zewnątrz.

Inaczej dzieje się w pracowni. Tutaj autorowi łatwiej sku-

pić się na studiowanym przedmiocie bądź wewnętrznej

wizji, oddzielić tę relację od pozostałych elementów prze-

strzeni. Warunki wnętrza sprzyjają obserwacji opartej na

kontemplacji i jednocześnie łatwiej tworzyć na podstawie

in a given space. The emotional content is also present in

the form of visual features, such as the quality of stains,

lines or composition of such graphic expression.

Summing up, the sensory eye is a kind of observation

heavily marked with sensory inclination, created under

the direct influence of contact with space – an expressive

note from nature with a significant visual expression. It

reflects the personality of the artist who expresses in the

visual language how he saw and “experienced” that space.

The attentive eye – Zbigniew Herbert

Zbigniew Herbert is known primarily as a poet and

writer, however, he also made a lot of sketches full of

special drawings with captions

. Some compare his draw-

ings to those by Villard de Honnecourt from the middle of

the 13

century

. The similarity regards mainly the fre-

quent use of descriptions combined with images. The big

difference between them, however, is the great discipline

of the line in the geometric structures created by Villard

and the expression of the drawings by Herbert. Villard

drew in such a way as if to solve a riddle, demonstrate or

explain the correct design of the structure, whereas

Herbert focused more on making notes of what he saw

and more importantly of how he saw (Fig. 2a). Every

drawing was for him capturing an impression, a sensation

which he later transformed into words. This is also why

those drawings are so unique and poetic. The author gave

up making notes only with words and also made sketches

to capture visual sensations. The sketches became a sort

of pictorial shadows or more accurately – a mirror of his

prose and poems or in other words an interim condition

between reality and a drawing which he saw and only

later transformed into words. The poet in fact referred to

the very essence of visual arts in Malarstwo jest rzeczą

umysłu where he wrote that painting is creating reality, an

attempt to create the world: In the facial lines, in the

colorful planes, in the forms of objects, in their mutual

relationship – the artist expresses not only his own truth

of observation, revolutions of his own imagination, but

also the laws ruling the visible world. A mathematician

makes use of the language of numbers. An astronomer

draws diagrams of the revolutions of the celestial bodies.

A painter also creates his own small cosmos made of ver-

ticals and horizontals, colors, light lines [6, p. 102].

Supposedly, Herbert often drew without looking at the

sheet of paper; he trusted the authenticity of every single

of the subjects of scientific reflections. A good example is the Work

shops on Herbert in Obory from 2005. The result of the interdisciplinary

meeting was among others the publication edited by J.M. Ruszar Zmysł

bert) [5]. Other publications with the sketches by Herbert include for

instance [6] and [7].

T.J. Żuchowski makes such a comparison when analyzing the

draw ing by Herbert. At the same time, he claims that this is not the com-

plete similarity and in all aspects [8, p. 29].

Treści emocjonalne zostawiają także ślad w postaci cech

plastycznych przejawiających się w jakości plam, linii

czy kompozycji takiej graficznej wypowiedzi.

Podsumowując, zmysłowe oko to sposób obserwacji

mocno naznaczony zabarwieniem zmysłowym, powsta-

łym pod bezpośrednim wpływem kontaktu z przestrzenią.

To ekspresyjna notatka z natury, w której ważny jest

wyraz plastyczny. Odzwierciedla on osobowość artysty,

który językiem plastycznym wyraża, jak zobaczył i „prze-

żył” tę przestrzeń.

Uważne oko – Zbigniew Herbert

Zbigniew Herbert znany jest przede wszystkim jako poeta

i pisarz. Tymczasem pozostawił on po sobie także wiele

szkicowników zapełnionych szczególnym rodzajem obra-

zowosłownych notatek

. Niektórzy porównują je do rysun-

ków Villarda d’Honnecourta z połowy XIII w.

Jednak

podobieństwo to polega przede wszystkim na częstym współ-

istnieniu warstwy opisowej i graficznej. Tym, co je głów nie

różni, jest duża dyscyplina kreski w geometrycznych struk-

turach tworzonych przez Villarda i ekspresja rysunków

Herberta. Villard rysował tak, jakby chciał rozwiązać za 

gadkę, wykazać czy odzwierciedlić prawid łowość konstruk

cji, a Herbert bardziej skupiał się na sporządzeniu notatki

tego co widzi i przede wszystkim jak widzi (il. 2a). Każdy

obrazek był dla niego zatrzymaniem jakiejś impresji, wraże

nia, któ re potem zamieniał na słowa. Stąd też niebanalny

i poetycki charakter tych rysunków. Autor zrezygnował

z wyłącznie słownych notatek na rzecz szkicowania wrażeń

wizualnych. Szkice te stały się takim obrazowym cieniem,

a może trafniej – lustrem jego prozy i wierszy.

Stanem po -

średnim między rzeczywistością a obrazem, który widział

i dopiero potem zamieniał na słowo. Zresztą w tekście

Malarstwo jest rzeczą umysłu poeta odnosi się do samej

istoty sztuk plastycznych, pisząc, iż malarstwo jest tworze-

niem rzeczywistości, próbą streszczenia świata: W liniach

twarzy, w kolorowych płaszczyznach, w formach przedmio-

tów w ich wzajemnym stosunku – wyraża artysta nie tylko

swoją prawdę widzenia, obroty swojej wyobraźni,

ale także

prawa rządzące widzianym światłem. Matematyk posługuje

się językiem cyfr. Astronom rysuje schematy obrotu ciał nie-

bieskich. Malarz także stwarza swój mały kosmos z pionów

i poziomów, kolorów, linii światła [6, s. 102].

Podobno Herbert często rysował, nie patrząc na kartkę,

ufał autentyczności każdej stawianej kreski. W ten sposób

Prywatna historia sztuki Zbigniewa Herberta [5]. Inne pozycje zawiera-

jące szkice Herberta to np. [6] i [7].

T.J. Żuchowski, analizując rysunki Herberta, dokonuje takiego

po równania. Jednocześnie zastrzega, że nie jest to podobieństwo całko-

wite i we wszystkich aspektach [8, s. 29].

line he drew. This way it is not difficult to notice the de -

formations of reality. Paradoxically, however, it is through

the deformations that the author demonstrated the sub-

stance of the matter. In effect, Herbert disapproved of the

traditional way of drawing and introduced a “romantic and

metaphysical concept of the inner eye”

. The eye

which

carefully monitors and describes what it sees. It does not

describe, however, only on the basis of appearance. What

is also important is the emotional and intellectual aspect of

that perception. It is enough to look at the drawing of the

facade of St Mark’s Basilica (Fig. 2b) and remember the

words: The facade was for the Italians a co lorful proces-

sion, slightly exaggerated, just like an opera with choirs of

sculptures, mosaics, pilasters and turrets

[9, p. 53].

The drawings by Herbert have been divided into sev-

eral categories, primarily by their subject. We are inter-

ested in landscapes and architecture, sketches with cap-

tions

as well as notes from museums which analyze

works of art.

The drawings of landscapes were created from the

middle of the sheet of paper. The author built the perspec-

tive as if that of fisheye and that is why the viewer is in

the middle of the whole space depicted there (Fig. 2c).

Another principle governs the composition of the sketches

with words and drawings. Those were drawn beginning

from the upper left corner that is in compliance with the

writing principle regarding the composition of the sheet

of paper. They can be looked at as if we were reading a draw-

ing. A little like a text which was completed with drawing

in some places.

The sketches made in the museums are analytical

sketches made in such a way as if their author wanted to

guess and follow the train of thought of their original

creators. Such a way of observation resembles a penetrat-

ing, focused touch of a blind person, if a look and its

record can be compared to a touch…

The sketches by

Herbert are in fact such a direct record of the process of

LOOKING. Every movement of the eye leaves a visual

mark – information on a sheet of paper.

Summing up, the attentive eye is an observation that is

a thorough analysis – its objective is to show what has

been seen and noticed. This results in an analytical note of

a real space and works from nature which is dominated by

intellectual and emotional perception of space and where

the visual expression plays the secondary role.

An interesting analysis of the drawings by Herbert is included in

[8, pp. 15–41].

The words refer to the Orvieto Cathedral but they can refer to

other lavish facades, such as that of the Venetian Basilica.

The contemporary research of a similar way of making notes

known as mind mapping might seem interesting in the context of the

captioned drawing notes by Herbert. The combination of words and

drawings is supposed to activate, apart from the left brain hemisphere

responsible for logical thinking, the right one and thus make use of its

imaginative functions and spatial vision. Consequently, the synergy

enhances the efficiency of work and memory. This method was devel-

oped by two British scholars – Tony and Barry Buzan [10].

Similar associations can be found in the words by J. Berger who in

reference to the drawings by Vincent van Gogh comments on their tac tility,

claiming that Everything his eye sees, he fingers [quoted after: 1, p. 100].

paradoksalnie to właśnie poprzez zniekształcenia autor

po kazywał istotę rzeczy. W efekcie Herbert dezawuował

tradycyjny sposób rysowania i wprowadził „romantycz-

nometafizyczny koncept wewnętrznego oka”

. Oka, któ

re uważnie śledzi i opisuje to, co widzi. Nie opisuje jed-

nak wyłącznie w oparciu o wygląd. Ważny jest także

czynnik emocjonalny oraz intelektualny tego odbioru.

Wystarczy spojrzeć na rysunek elewacji bazyliki św. Marka

(il. 2b) i przypomnieć sobie słowa: Fasada była dla Wło

chów kolorową procesją, nieco przesadną, jak opera z chó-

rami rzeźb, mozaik, pilastrów i wieżyczek

[9, s. 53].

Rysunki Herberta podzielono na kilka kategorii. Przede

wszystkim ze względu na ich temat. Nas interesują pejza-

że i widoki architektury, szkice obrazowosłowne

i notat-

ki z muzeów, które są analizą dzieł sztuki.

Rysunki pejzaży tworzone są od środka kartki. Autor

zbudował perspektywę jakby rybiego oka i dzięki temu

obserwator znajduje się w środku całej ujętej tam prze-

strzeni (il. 2c). Inna zasada rządzi kompozycją szkiców

zawierających słowo i obraz. Te zostały narysowane, po 

czynając od lewej górnej krawędzi, czyli według pisar-

skiej zasady kompozycji kartki. Można je oglądać tak,

jakbyśmy czytali obraz. Trochę jak tekst, który miejscami

został uzupełniony obrazami.

Szkice zrobione w muzeach to szkice analityczne, pow -

stałe tak, jakby ich autor chciał odgadnąć i podążać za

tokiem myślenia ich prawdziwych twórców. Taki sposób

patrzenia trochę przypomina penetrujący, skupiony dotyk

niewidomego, jeśli można przyrównać spojrzenie

i jego

zapis do dotyku…

Szkice Herberta są bowiem takim bez-

pośrednim zapisem procesu PATRZENIA. Każdy ruch oka

zostawia plastyczny ślad – informację na kartce.

Podsumowując, uważne oko to obserwacja będąca dro-

Twórcze, wewnętrzne oko

– koncepcyjne szkice architektów

Architekci często posługują się rysunkiem zarówno

w procesie twórczym, jak i w zapisie własnych wizji.

Interesującą analizę rysunków Herberta zawiera [8, s. 15–41].

Przytoczone słowa dotyczą katedry w Orvieto, ale można je od nieść

do innych pełnych przepychu fasad, takich jak fasada bazyliki weneckiej.

W kontekście słownoobrazowych zapisków Herberta interesują-

ce mogą być współczesne badania nad podobnym sposobem sporządza-

nia notatek. Znane są jako mind mapping (dosłownie: mapowanie

myśli). Połączenie słów z rysunkiem ma uaktywniać poza lewą półkulą

odpowiedzialną za logiczne myślenie także prawą i dzięki temu wyko-

rzystywać jej funkcję wyobraźni i widzenia przestrzennego. W efekcie

synergii zwiększa się efektywność pracy i zapamiętywania. Metoda ta

została opracowana przez dwóch brytyjskich naukowców – Tony’ego

i Barry’ego Buzanów [10].

Podobne skojarzenia można odnaleźć w słowach J. Bergera,

który w odniesieniu do rysunków Vincenta van Gogha mówi o ich tak-

tylności, stwierdzając: Wszystko, co widzi jego oko, dotyka palcami [cyt.

za: 1, s. 100].

The creative, inner eye

– conceptual sketches by architects

Architects often use drawings both to create and to

record their visions. That process is usually extended in

time and its individual phases require other means of

expression. From the phase of early concept, when the

idea just begins to take shape until the ultimate visualiza-

tions in which the space is depicted in the form of a very

clear message. The final effect is at present most often

detailed visualizations developed with the use of graphic

software programs. That is why we are interested most of

all in the first sketches where still rough ideas are trans-

formed into the first pictures. Sometimes they are mere

records of movement, direction, and struggle with forces.

Proces ten zazwyczaj jest rozciągnięty w czasie i poszcze-

gólne jego fazy wymagają innych środków wyrazu. Od

fazy wczesnego konceptu, gdy idea dopiero zaczyna sta-

wać się kształtem, aż do końcowych wizualizacji, w któ-

rych przestrzeń zostaje zobrazowana w formie bardzo

czytelnego komunikatu. Efekt finalny to obecnie najczę-

ściej szczegółowe wizualizacje tworzone przy użyciu

programów graficznych. Dlatego też interesują nas tu naj-

bardziej te pierwsze szkice, gdy niezborne jeszcze myśli

zamieniają się w pierwsze obrazy. Czasem są one zaled-

wie zapisem ruchu, kierunku i zmagania z siłami. Czasem

ich dziecinna estetyka, napięcia formy i ekspresja wzbu-

dzają konsternację u widza. W tej fazie rysunek jest

niczym plac budowy. Budynki często są pochylone, krzy-

we i niepełne, a urywane linie dopiero rosną. W koncepcji

Sometimes their childlike aesthetics, tensions of form and

expression cause a consternation in the viewers. The

drawing is like a construction site at this stage. The build-

ings are often leaning, crooked and incomplete and the

broken lines only begin to grow. When working on his

concept, the author doesn’t not need to struggle with real-

ity, with gravity, with the laws of physics; everything

takes place on an imaginary construction site. Everything

is in a constant motion, everything can be moved any

time, everything can even change its shape. What binds

the author with reality is the attributes of the place, its

topography and the functions of the future object which

ultimately must take some shape

The conceptual drawings by architects differ from one

another, depending not only on the stage of design in

which they were made. The style of the sketches reflects

to a large extent the personal vision of architecture pre-

sented by their author. The sketches made by the architect

Tomasz Głowacki from Wrocław are a good example of

this (Fig. 3). As the author says himself, he likes empti-

ness in architecture and his sketches demonstrate such an

approach perfectly.

A synthetic record, usually in a simple form, reflects

the idea of the whole design with amazing accuracy.

Being the result and at the same time a picture of the first

impulse in thinking about the subject, it proves to be the

“complete” account of the vision because it contains what

is the most significant in the original idea. Afterwards, it

should “only” be preserved. This way the first drawing

records which are often created on the spur of the moment

(on a napkin or something else which theoretically should

not be used for drawing on) are the closest to the original

concept of the design idea. As a result of Głowacki’s

incli-

nation for simplicity they are surprisingly clear and evi-

dent already at the very beginning. They have no unneces-

sary lines, traces of struggle for the shape or direction.

The drawings are precise and consistent in their order.

They are no construction sites; in a sense they are com-

plete pictures, somewhat similar to a haiku poem which is

short and simple in its form yet still rich in substance.

The autonomic eye

– drawing fantasies on architecture

If architectural fantasy and futurology have anything to

do with reality, it is through inspiration by for instance

some special place. Fantastic art and fantasy are still pre-

sent in painting and drawing. Although over time they

have manifested in different ways (mannerism, romanti-

cism, symbolism or surrealism), they would always draw

from dreams and imagination. They would impart forms

and shapes to what could be imagined or only sensed.

They would translate what is “visible with eyes of mind

and emotions” to pictures. In that sense they would be

Koncepcyjne rysunki architektów różnią się między

sobą nie tylko w zależności od tego, w jakiej fazie pracy

nad projektem powstały. Styl szkiców w dużej mierze jest

odzwierciedleniem osobistej wizji architektury prezento-

wanej przez ich autora. Za przykład posłużą nam tutaj

szkice wrocławskiego architekta Tomasza Głowackie

go (il. 3). Autor jest zwolennikiem, jak sam mówi, pustki

w ar chitekturze i jego szkice znakomicie takie podejście

ukazują.

Syntetyczny zapis, zwykle prostej formy, zadziwia traf 

nością w odzwierciedleniu idei całego projektu. Będąc

wy nikiem i zarazem obrazem pierwszego impulsu w my -

śleniu nad tematem, okazuje się „skończonym” zapisem

wizji, bo zawiera to, co najważniejsze w pomyśle. Potem

pozostaje już „tylko” tego nie zagubić. Tak więc ten pierw

szy rysunkowy zapis, który rodzi się często bardzo spon-

tanicznie (na serwetkach czy innych materiałach teore-

tycznie nieprzeznaczonych do rysowania), jest najbliższy

koncepcyjnej idei projektu. U Głowackiego,

w związ ku

z jego umiłowaniem prostoty, już na samym początku

jest zadziwiająco klarowny i czytelny. Nie ma tam zbęd-

nych linii, śladów walki o kształty czy kierunki. Rysunek

jest zwarty i konsekwentny w uporządkowaniu. To nie

plac budowy, to w pewnym sensie skończony obraz, tro-

chę jak krótki i oszczędny w formie, ale mimo to bogaty

w treści wiersz haiku.

Autonomiczne oko

– rysunkowe fantazje na temat architektury

Fantazja i futurologia architektoniczna zwykle nie

mają związku z realiami. Co najwyżej poprzez inspirację,

na przykład jakimś szczególnym miejscem. Sztuka

wyobraźni, fantastyka są stale obecne w malarstwie i ry 

sunku. Choć w różnych epokach przejawiały się od 

miennie (manieryzm, romantyzm, symbolizm czy surrea-

lizm), to zawsze czerpały z marzeń, snów i wyobraźni.

Nadawały formy i kształty temu, co wyobrażone lub zale-

dwie przeczuwane. Przekładały to, co „widziane oczami

umysłu i emocji” na obrazy. I w tym sensie powstawały

one jako wyraz pewnej autonomii artysty wobec realnego

obrazu świata

. Zależnie od tego, co stanowiło inspirację,

nych nazwał i wnikliwie opisał fenomen rysunkowych wizji architekto-

nicznych. Autonomia rozumiana jako niezależność wobec rzeczywisto-

ści jest podstawową cechą ogólnej postawy twórcy, który w swych

dzie łach rezygnuje z wnikliwej obserwacji na rzecz imaginacji. Stąd jego

wzrok porzuca realny świat zewnętrzny i zyskuje autonomię, otwie rając

się na wizje, przestrzenie, które tworzą się raczej „pod po wiekami”.

made to express some autonomy of the artist from the real

picture of the world

. Depending on what was the inspi ra-

tion, the result would be expressive, complicated sketches

(G.B. Piranesi, A. Kubin, D. Libeskind), futuristic visions

(A. Sant’ Elia, P. Cook), contrived spatial structures

(M.C. Escher) or oneiric landscapes (F. Khnopff, R. Ab 

raham). The subject is very broad with a lot of categories

and examples. The most important category for us which

com bines all those perspectives is the category of the

auto nomic eye which evidently determines the attitude of

the creator towards reality. This is where the creative fan-

tasy of the author (unlike the conceptual architectural

drawings) is not constrained by anything anymore and

that is why imagination can wander freely and the tech-

nique can be mastered, releasing all fascinations which

menon of pictorial architectural visions. Autonomy understood as inde-

pendence from reality is the basic quality of the general attitude of the

artist who resigns in his works from close observations in favor of

imagination. This is why his observations ignore the real outside world

and become autonomic, opening to visions, spaces which emerge “under

eyelids”. The architectural reality of verticals, horizontals, matter and

gravity are subjected to intellectual and emotional distortions which are

usually unrealistic. The defining of the attitude in drawing fantasies on

architecture includes the key property and that is why such a term

describes best the type of perception of the autonomic eye used in this

żyć kategorie i przykłady. Dla nas najważniejsza jest łą 

cząca wszystkie te spojrzenia kategoria autonomicznego

oka, która wyraźnie określa postawę twórcy wobec rze-

czywistości. Tu twórcza fantazja autora (w odróżnieniu

od koncepcyjnych rysunków architektonicznych) nie jest

już niczym skrępowana. Dzięki temu można ćwiczyć

wyobraźnię i warsztat rysunkowy, dając upust wszystkim

fascynacjom, które rozwijają, a w przyszłości mogą stać

się pożywką dla realnych wizji projektowych. Bez cza 

sowego odrzucenia ograniczeń trudno o powstawanie

śmiałych i nowatorskich wizji. Przy kła dami takich rysun-

owych fantazji mogą być prace studentów I roku Wy 

działu Architektury Politechniki Wro cławskiej (WA PWr)

wykonane w ra mach przedmiotu rysunek odręczny. Jako

Architektoniczne realia pionów, poziomów, materii i grawitacji podda ne

zostają intelektualnoemocjonalnym zniekształceniom najczęściej nie 

realnym do zaistnienia w rzeczywistości. Zdefiniowanie po stawy aut o

no mii w rysunkowych fantazjach na temat architektury za wiera w sobie

klu czową cechę, stąd też określenie takie najlepiej oddaje też typ per-

cepcji auto nomicznego oka przyjętego w niniejszym tekście. Patrz: [13,

grow and in the future can fuel real design visions. With

no temporary rejection of restrictions it is difficult for

audacious and innovative visions to develop. The hand-

made drawings by the students of the first year of Ar chi-

tecture at Wrocław University of Science and Technology

(WA PWr) are good examples of such drawing fantasies.

Some fragments from literature – for instance from the

novel by Italo Calvino Invisible Cities [14] were the pre-

text for making the drawings. The students’ task was to

carefully read the descriptions of a few cities and then

interpret them in a graphic form. As the descriptions

included many precise visions of space and various attrib-

utes, the sketches which were made provided a clear and

detailed narrative about the city. A lot of students enthusi-

astically executed the task, succumbing to the fabulous

visions of the writer. A similar thing happened when mak-

ing illustrations for the texts by Zbigniew Herbert (Fig. 4).

The subjects provided a great opportunity to check the

drawing techniques of the drawers or, if they were profi-

cient enough, to adequately present the visions which

emerged after reading the texts full of metaphors. It

should be noted that the sensory eye and the attentive eye

provide an opportunity to multiply the collection of visual

experiences which are later used by the autonomic eye in

its imagination. This is consistent with the opinion quoted

at the beginning by Berger about a “store” of pictorial

observations.

Conclusions

All above-described kinds of observations, visions,

and visual records demonstrate different relationships

between observations and drawings. This is the manifes-

tation of the functions of drawing which teach and sup-

port observations, thinking, and creating in space. The art

of observation is about the ability of making observations

which is connected with the perception of physical attrib-

utes of space and those which contribute to the creation of

meanings as well as visual, cultural, and historical quali-

ties. That observation should combine the perspective of

the artist, critic, and user of space.

Each architect is then a creator who should be specially

sensitive to space and its images. All attributes of the sur-

rounding provide the material and substance of design

operations. Although the relationships between the sensi-

tive reception of stimuli from space, the whole myriad of

sensory sensations and later its adequate use in designing

are obvious, they should be always emphasized. All

actions which can contribute to the development of those

abilities should be used in educating future architects. The

development of the sensory eye, observations made with

the use of senses in the direct contact with nature, pro-

vides an opportunity for later deliberate use of such

knowledge in design practice.

Another way of making observations is the category of

the attentive eye. Here the intellectual factor prompts the

method of recording, orders, and interprets sensations.

This is not then an emotionless observation because it

comprises a record of highly individual perception of the

subject. This is a set of signs, sometimes notes made with

liwe odczytanie opisów kilku miast, by potem zinterpre-

tować je w formie graficznej. Ponieważ opisy te zawiera-

ły wiele dokładnych wizji przestrzeni wraz z różnymi

atrybutami, powstawały szkice będące czytelną, bogatą

w szczegóły narracją o mieście. Wielu studentów z zapa-

łem realizowało temat, poddając się baśniowym wizjom

pisarza. Podobnie działo się także przy okazji ilustrowa-

nia tekstów Zbigniewa Herberta (il. 4). Tematy te stano-

wiły świetną okazję, między innymi do sprawdzenia, jak

bogatym warsztatem graficznym posługują się rysujący.

Czy jest on na tyle wystarczający, by wyczerpująco zobra-

zować wizje, które pojawiały się po przeczytaniu tekstów

bogatych w metafory. Należy tu jeszcze wspomnieć, że

zmysłowe i uważne oko dają szansę na pomnażanie zbioru

doświadczeń wizualnych, z których w swej wyobraźni

korzysta potem autonomiczne oko. Uwaga ta zgodna jest

z przytoczonym na wstępie zdaniem Bergera o „magazy-

nowaniu” obrazów.

Podsumowanie

Wszystkie opisane powyżej sposoby patrzenia, two-

rzenia wizji oraz graficznego zapisu pokazują różne re 

lacje między widzeniem a rysowaniem. W ten sposób

ujaw

niają się funkcje rysunku, które uczą i wspomagają ob 

serwację, myślenie i tworzenie w przestrzeni. W kon tekś

cie twórczości architekta trzeba mówić o sztuce pa trze nia

jako o umiejętności obserwacji, która będzie łączyła za 

równo percepcję fizycznych atrybutów przestrzeni, jak

i tych, które przyczyniają się do tworzenia znaczeń oraz

wa lorów plastycznych, kulturowych czy historycznych.

To spojrzenie powinno łączyć perspektywę twórcy, kry

tyka oraz użytkownika przestrzeni.

Każdy architekt jest więc twórcą, który powinien być

szczególnie wrażliwy na przestrzeń i jej obrazy. Wszystkie

atrybuty otoczenia stanowią materialne i znaczenio we

tworzywo działań projektowych. Związki między wraż

liwym odbieraniem bodźców z przestrzeni – całego bo 

gactwa sensualnych doznań – i później umiejętnym wy 

ko rzystaniem tego w projektowaniu, choć są oczywiste,

to zaw sze warte podkreślania. Wszystkie działania, które

mo gą się przyczyniać do rozwijania tych umiejętności,

należy wykorzystywać w kształceniu przyszłych archi-

tektów. Rozwijanie zmysłowego oka, obserwacji nasta-

wionej na poznanie zmysłowe w bezpośredniej styczności

z naturą jest szansą na późniejsze świadome wy ko rzy

stywanie takiej wiedzy w praktyce projektowej.

Kolejnym omówionym sposobem obserwacji jest ka te

goria uważnego oka. Tutaj czynnik intelektualny pod po

wiada sposób zapisu, porządkuje i interpretuje doznania.

Nie jest to więc pozbawiony emocji ogląd, gdyż stanowi

za pis bardzo indywidualnego odbioru tematu. Jest zespo-

łem znaków, czasem słownych notatek, które dopełnia ją się

wzajemnie. Ponieważ jest w pewnym sensie takim in tym 

nym pamiętnikiem relacji z obiektem, jego czy tel ność dla

po stronnego odbiorcy może być problema tyczna. Dla przy

szłego

architekta, mimo ograniczonej komuni ka tyw ności

takiego zapisu, umiejętność jego

stworzenia może być

bardzo cenna. Jest sposobem na kształ

towanie własnego

języka plastycznej wypowiedzi w myśleniu o przestrzeni.

Tworzy się własny, osobisty alfabet zna ków, które umoż-

liwiają łączenie wyobraźni, patrzenia i potem zapisu gra-

ficznego. Przecież proces projektowania to ciągły montaż

i demontaż obrazów i myśli, a zarazem prób graficznego

odzwierciedlenia tego, co dzieje się w wyobraźni i emo-

cjach. Umiejętność okiełznania i zapisania tego procesu

jest niezmiernie ważna w praktyce projektowej.

Łatwość tworzenia notatek odzwierciedlających obser-

wację uważnego oka ma bezpośredni związek z umiejęt-

nością wyrażenia koncepcji twórczego, wewnętrznego

oka. Własny, indywidualny język graficzny, szczególnie

na początku procesu projektowania, jest niezbędny. Wte

dy gdy tworzą się pierwsze idee przyszłej bryły, ze społu

brył czy całego założenia, architekt powinien mieć łat

wość zwizualizowania ich, a więc stworzenia tego pierw

szego zarysu, subtelnego kształtu pomysłu. To ten pierw-

szy szkic materializuje myśl, koncept i jeśli zostanie

dobrze przedstawiony, może być czytelną wytyczną

w dalszej, coraz bardziej bogatej w szczegół pracy nad

projektem. Oglądając szkice architektów, przekonujemy

się, że często te niezborne, pierwsze zapisy najlepiej od 

dają ducha projektu. Skoro tak, to trudno przecenić umie-

jętność tworzenia takiego szkicu przez jego autora.

a kind of intimate diary of relationships with an object, its

clarity can be problematic for an outside viewer. For a fu 

ture architect, in spite of limited communicativeness of

such an account, the ability to create it can be highly val-

uable. This is a way to develop an individual language of

visual expression about thinking of space. It results in

a creation of a special, personal alphabet of signs which

makes it possible to combine imagination, observations

and later visual records. After all, the process of designing

involves constant composing and decomposing of images

and thoughts as well as attempts at depicting what is

going on in imagination and emotions. The ability to con-

trol and re cord that process is extremely important in de -

sign practice.

The ease with which it is to take notes reflecting obser-

vations made with the attentive eye is closely connected

with the ability to express the concept of the creative eye,

inner eye. It is necessary, especially at the beginning of

the design process, to use the personal, individual visual

language. When the first ideas of future structures, a group

of structures or the whole development are born, the

architect should be able to visualize them easily that is

make the first sketch – a subtle outline of an idea. This is

that first sketch which materializes the thought, concept

and if it is presented properly, it can be a clear guideline

W tym miejscu warto też zapytać, czym byłby zgrabny

zapis pomysłu, jeśli ten nie zawierałby ciekawych treści.

Jedną z szans na rozwijanie wyobraźni jest doskonalenie

umiejętności autonomicznego oka. Otworzenie przyszłe-

go architekta na pracę z niczym nieskrępowaną wyobraź-

nią pobudza do myślenia o przestrzeni także w kategoriach

znaczeniowych. Pozwala na poruszanie się po nie wy dep

tanych ścieżkach wyobraźni, która odkrywa nowe wątki

i nowe znaczenia kształtów, form, faktur. Cza sami wcześ 

niej na wet niemożliwe do przewidzenia i logicznego za 

planowania. Błądzenie w takich obszarach może okazać

się bardzo inspirujące i jednocześnie przyjemne. Studenci

zwykle chętnie poruszają się w tak zakreślonych rejo-

nach, bo któż nie lubi świata fantazji… Warto to wyko-

rzystać w dydaktyce, zwłaszcza że takie tematy stanowią

także pretekst i wyzwanie, jeśli chodzi o doskonalenie

warsztatu rysunkowego. Im przestrzeń bardziej skompli-

kowana i odbiegająca od realnych, często schematycz-

nych w przedstawianiu kształtów, tym większe wyzwanie

dla umiejętności graficznych. Jednocześnie podejmowa-

nie takiej tematyki umożliwia wyjście poza schematy

myślowe i obrazowe.

Wszystkie omówione w tekście postawy przenikają się

wzajemnie i uzupełniają, będąc różnymi aspektami tego

W związku z tym teza postawiona na początku artyku-

łu na pewno mogłaby brzmieć: im lepiej potrafimy ryso-

wać, tym lepiej umiemy patrzeć.

Taki wniosek wypływa ze związków widzenia z wiedzą,

a Arnheim napisał między innymi, że Najnowsze poglądy psychologicz-

ne pozwalają nam więc nazwać widzenie twórczą czynnością ludzkiego

umysłu. Postrzeganie osiąga na poziomie sensorycznym to, co w dzie-

dzinie rozumowej określane jest jako zrozumienie [2, s. 66]. Podobnej

tematyce autor poświęcił rozdział zatytułowany „Rozumność percepcji

wzrokowej” w: [3, s. 23–67].

Looking at architects’ sketches, we realize that the inco-

herent, first records often best render the substance of the

design. If so, it is difficult to overestimate the ability to

create such a sketch by its author.

The following question should be asked at this point:

Would a record of an idea be neat if it didn’t have interest-

ing substance? One of the chances to develop imagination

is to master the capabilities of the autonomic eye. Opening

future architects to work with completely unconstrained

imagination triggers thinking about space also in seman-

tic categories. This makes it possible to walk untrodden

paths of imagination and discover new motifs as well as

meanings of shapes, forms, and textures which sometimes

were impossible to expect and logically plan earlier.

Wandering around such areas can prove highly inspira-

tional and pleasant at the same time. Students are usually

willing to move around such areas as everybody likes the

world of fantasy… It should be used in teaching, espe-

cially because such subjects also provide a pretext and

a challenge in regard of perfecting the drawing technique.

The more complicated the space and the further it is from

real, often schematically presented, shapes, the greater the

challenge for the drawing technique. Furthermore, under-

taking such subjects makes it possible to break out of the

thinking and pictorial patterns.

All the positions presented in the paper overlap and

supplement one another, being different aspects of the

same actively open eye. The eye because of which we can

repeat after Arnheim I see, therefore I know

Let us now go back to the thesis put forward at the

beginning that in order to be able to see, you need to know

how to draw. Each of the examples demonstrated that

through teaching and practicing drawing you can master

and sharpen the senses, including the eyes – vision, obser-

vation, and spatial imagination. Consequently, it can be

said that practicing drawing makes the eye open wider

and wider. This is also confirmed by John Berger who

wrote the following words: Every line drawn by me trans-

forms the shape on paper and at the same time draws

a picture again in my mind. Moreover, the line which is

drawn redraws the

because it changes my abi

lity to perceive [quoted after: 1, p. 99].

Consequently, the thesis put forward at the beginning

of the paper surely could have read as follows: the better

we draw, the better we can see.

Such a conclusion comes from the relationships between obser-

vations and knowledge and Arnheim wrote for instance that Recent

psychological thinking, then, encourages us to call vision a creative

activity of the human mind. Perceiving accomplishes at the sensory level

what in the realm of reasoning is known as understanding [2, p. 66]. The

author dedicated the whole chapter to a similar subject titled “The

Intelligence of Perception” in: [3, pp. 23–67].

Streszczenie

W artykule opisano związki między umiejętnością aktywnej percepcji przestrzeni a rysunkiem odręcznym, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich roli

w rozwijaniu umiejętności twórczych architektów. Wyróżniono cztery kategorie widzenia i odpowiadające im sposoby plastycznego zapisu.

Wszystkie one zostały omówione na podstawie przykładów rysunków W. Weissa, Z. Herberta, współczesnych architektów (m.in. T. Głowackiego)

oraz prac studenckich. Zwrócono uwagę na pewne odrębności i jednocześnie uzupełnianie się tych kategorii w ostatecznym kształtowaniu aktywnej,

twórczej postawy percepcji przestrzeni, nazwanej aktywnie otwartym okiem.

Abstract

This article describes the relationship between active perception of space and hand-drawing, with particular emphasis on their role in developing

creative skills of architects. There are four categories of vision and their respective modes of artistic record. All of them are described on the basis

of examples of W. Weiss, Z. Herbert, contemporary architects (including T. Głowacki) and student work. Attention was drawn to certain distinctness

and at the same time complementing these attitudes in the final shaping of the active, creative attitude of perception of space, called Active Eye.
