Abstract

In 2022, architectural research was conducted on the former evangelical church, now the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Byków (Długołęka commune, Wrocław district), dating to 1574. Over the following centuries, the church underwent significant expansion and reconstruction that dramatically changed its form.

The article presents the results of the conducted research regarding the original form of the church, particularly the building technique used in the 16th century and reconstruction of its probable appearance after construction. The research covered the structural system, type of building material used and its processing, connection methods and the system of carpentry assembly marks, applied carpentry joints, as well as the material used to fill the frame fields and its coloring.

Based on these findings, it was established that the original church was built in half-timbered construction, consisting of a nave section and an elongated, three-sided closed choir to the east and a tower to the west. The nave and choir were covered with gabled roofs with collar beam trusses. A large part of this construction has been preserved in the current structure of the church.
