Abstract

This article presents the results of architectural research concerning the identified underground spaces of the Krzeszów monastic complex. The subject of the research is the crypt located in the northern part of the eastern wing of the former Cistercian monastic complex, which has not yet been sufficiently explored. This crypt holds the greatest significance among all underground spaces for understanding the construction history of the monastery.

Based on the traces found within it, several stages and phases spanning from the 14th to the 21st century were identified. The first stage refers to the period when medieval chapter house and sacristy rooms were built at ground level in the crypt’s location. During the construction of the new church, the eastern part of the preserved crypt was built with a circular staircase (circa 1730).
