Pavel Drnovský, Petr Hejhal - Current state of knowledge about late medieval fortifications in the Broumov region. Benedictines as builders of defensive settlements
doi:10.37190/arc240401
In the mid-13th century, the Broumov region (Czech Republic) came under the ownership of the Benedictine order (Břevnov monastery in Prague). Broumov became the center of the area, consisting of a town and a priory, later a monastery. The Benedictine order is associated with the colonization of the region in the late medieval period. During this time, a system of villages and regularly measured fields was established here. However, the order’s colonization activities also included the construction of several fortifications, which were relatively quickly destroyed. The aim of this article is to present the current state of research on local medieval fortifications. In addition to the analysis of written sources, the results of archaeological research and non-destructive surveys are presented.
